THE ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL BY KHADEJAH KHAN The Electric Daisy Carnival, commonly referred to as EDC, is returning to Orlando for the ninth time, and if you haven’t been yet, it’s an adventure to experience at least once in your life. Held at the Tinker Field Stadium from November 8-10, the three day carnival has something for everyone, whether you are a veteran music lover, newbie, or just want to see what all the hype is about. Once you enter the fairgrounds, you’ll feel ignited by the carnival’s atmosphere. The jaw-dropping stages are something to marvel at, incorporating laser shows, pyrotechnics, and grandiose sets within the fairgrounds. You can also enjoy the full-size ferris wheel, or immerse yourself in interactive art installations that harmonize technology and nature, from LED lights, glow in the dark spaces, and three-dimensional superstructures. And if we’re lucky, perhaps we’ll see ziplining again from past EDCs. Of course, the headliners and acts this year
are full of magnetic artists ready to electrify excited music lovers. Favorites include Afrojack, Kaskade, DeadMau5, DJ Snake, and Mau5trap spinning some original tracks and remixes. The ever-popular Steve Aoki, known for throwing cake in the faces of his most die-hard fans, will also be headlining on November 8. If you’re new to EDC, don’t fret! EDC encourages a judgement-free zone and openmindedness to new experiences. Veteran carnival-goers love to meet new people and will talk your ear off. They create a friendly environment, are respectful, and spread positivity to a contagious degree. You’ll quickly feel the love and camaraderie, make new friends, and create memories unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. More than a music festival, EDC is a community where people young and old embrace their authentic selves. Carnivalgoers dress up in colorful, vibrant, and often
humorous costumes (like Big Bird or a hot dog) to express their personalities. Some costumes are subtle in the details and others take up space. Take the opportunity to create, pretend, and play with your individuality in a judgement-free zone; it’s a refreshing change from the humdrum of life. Even if dressing up isn’t your cup of tea, you can still enjoy the experience of witnessing creativity at its craziest. Whether it’s your ninth time at EDC Orlando or your first time, whether you decide to go all three days or just one, it is an unforgettable experience with something for everyone. Invite some friends, your 18+ kids or grandkids, or be adventurous on your own. Either way, in a friendly environment and magnetic music, arts, and culture carnival, you are sure to have a good time. EDC comes to Tinker Field, Orlando November 8-10.

Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort came alive with jack-o’-lanterns, special character appearances and entertainment for the whole family during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Kids were encouraged to dress in costume for the occasion and everyone enjoyed trick-or-treating through the park for a variety of tasty snacks. Even Mickey and Minnie got in on the fun while debuting new outfits at “Mickey’s Boo-to-You Parade.” In addition to the return of the “Hocus Pocus Villains Spelltacular” castle stage show, guests also enjoyed special attraction experiences for Mad Tea Party, Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain. The magical festivities ended with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald trick-or-treating through a mysterious haunted house during the event’s all-new fireworks spectacular.

The award-winning 10th annual “Día de los Muertos Monster Party” Art Show and Block Party returned to Downtown Orlando on Thursday, October 17th. Presented by Downtown Arts District and CityArts Orlando, the fun and festive event continues to grow more monstrous each year. Inspired by the traditional Mexican holiday, guests enjoyed viewing original artwork and Ofrendas by local and national artists themed in Día de los Muertos and Halloween all exhibited at CityArts Orlando. A simultaneous Block Party outside CityArts featured live music, dance and theatre performances, spooky art vendors, food, face painting, costume contest, photo opportunities, raffles and much more. All donations and proceeds went to benefit Downtown Arts District. Made possible in part by the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, IMMERSE is an annual performing and interactive arts experience from Creative City Project. Taking place every October in Orlando, this year’s event platformed more than 1,000 artists from more than 100 arts organizations and artist collectives in downtown’s streets and public spaces. From October 1819, IMMERSE 2019 was more exciting than ever before with new cultural performances, the creation of live murals, interactive media installations and more from across the U.S. and abroad. This year’s performances also included original content from the city’s most prestigious performing arts organizations including The Central Florida Community Arts Jazz Band, Opera Orlando, Orlando Ballet and more. Even the “Alligator Capital of the World” rang in the 2019 Halloween season with a special event that included spooky fun for everyone! From October 19-31, the first annual “Gators, Ghosts and Goblins at Gatorland” was included with the regular price of park admission and featured several spooky themed areas throughout the park complete with ghoulish actors, selfie zones, fun shows and a variety of specialty vendors. Just one of the many highlights was “Frank & Stein’s” Octoberfest Pavilion featuring characters, entertainment, and themed food and beer for purchase. In addition, the infamous Skunk Ape that Gatorland guests have spotted throughout the years will be making appearances throughout the day along with the mysterious Swamp Ghost and his Stompin’ Gator crew!

THE TEAM ENGINEERED THE HARDTOP TO STOW SEAMLESSLY INTO THE BODY, MAINTAINING THE STINGRAY’S IMPRESSIVE ABILITY TO STORE TWO SETS OF GOLF CLUBS IN THE TRUNK EVEN WITH THE TOP DOWN.

TOYS
The hardtop provides a quieter cabin, increased security and a cleaner look compared to the previous softtop designs. “Our goal from the beginning was to make sure customers didn’t have to sacrifice any functionality, performance or comfort when choosing the hardtop convertible,” said Josh Holder, Corvette program engineering manager. “We managed to keep the same design theme as the coupe, as well as the exceptional storage capacity and track capability.” NO COMPROMISE PERFORMANCE Like the Stingray coupe, the convertible is powered by the next-generation 6.2L Small Block V-8 LT2 engine, the only naturally aspirated V-8 in the segment. It will produce 495 horsepower (369 kW) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque when equipped with performance exhaust — the most horsepower and torque for any entry Corvette.
MID ENGINE
MASTERPIECE Open-air driving has always been a part of the Chevrolet Corvette’s heritage. In fact, when the Corvette debuted in 1953, it was available only as a convertible. The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible builds off that heritage as the first hardtop and mid-engine convertible in Corvette history. “We put the world on notice when we introduced the first mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette a few months ago, and now we’re raising the bar with the first-ever hardtop Corvette convertible,” said Brian Sweeney, Chevrolet U.S. vice president. “And the convertible will be priced only $7,500 more than entry 1LT Stingray coupe.” FIRST & FOREMOST, A CONVERTIBLE The mid-engine 2020 Corvette Stingray was engineered first and foremost as a convertible. The convertible maintains the tunneldominant structure and use of high-integrity die-cast parts found in the Stingray coupe. The team engineered the hardtop to stow seamlessly into the body, maintaining the Stingray’s impressive ability to store two sets of golf clubs in the trunk even with the top down. The convertible also keeps the coupe’s front storage compartment, which can fit an airline-spec carry-on and a laptop bag.
The LT2 is paired with Chevrolet’s first eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which provides lightning-fast shifts and excellent power transfer. This transmission is uniquely designed to provide the best of both worlds: the spirited, directly connected feeling of a manual and the premium driving comfort of an automatic. The double-paddle de-clutch feature even allows the driver to disconnect the clutch by holding both paddles for more manual control. When combined, the advanced propulsion system, revised chassis tuning and retractable hardtop make the 2020 Stingray the most no-compromise Corvette convertible in history. BUILD & PRICE TOOL NOW AVAILABLE Interested Stingray shoppers can now build and price their own Corvette coupe or convertible on the 2020 Corvette visualizer at Chevrolet.com. A dedicated Chevrolet Corvette Concierge team will provide 2020 Corvette customers with answers about the vehicle discovery, buying and ownership process. The team can be reached by calling 866-424-3892. Customers can also live chat with a Corvette Concierge by visiting Chevrolet.com. The team is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EDT Mondays through Fridays. The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe goes into production at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly in late 2019, with the convertible following in late first-quarter 2020. A right-hand drive version of the convertible will be available in select international markets at a later date.

PEOPLE
A DECADE WITH DANA From the moment she walked through the door of Orlando Style Magazine during the summer of her junior year, Dana Damato didn’t realize a simple summer editorial internship would pave the way for an entire career ahead. Between her full-time marketing job, getting certified to be a yoga instructor, and volunteering as a NICU Cuddler at AdventHealth for Women, Dana has also been a contributing writer for 10 years writing travel, health, wellness, entertainment and many other articles for Orlando and Tampa Style Magazine. We sat down with Dana and chatted about her experience over the past decade and how writing for the magazine has impacted her life and career. Why did you decide to intern with Orlando Style Magazine? Writing has always been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. I was an English-Creative Writing major at the University of Central Florida, so I always knew that whatever I did in life, I wanted to write in some way. Then once the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” came out, I had these big dreams to write for a magazine. There was just something about magazines that were so intriguing to me. Orlando Style Magazine was the one local publication that caught my attention. It wasn’t just a magazine to me. The content truly embraced the best in art, fashion, travel and lifestyle. I knew that’s where I wanted my writing experience to begin. What did you learn during your experience over the past decade? I learned so much about myself and my storytelling. Writing is a beautiful art form to me, so I really found my voice and how to be confident in my craft. I think when anyone starts out as a writer, there is fear in what you say and how you say it. Who your audience will be and how you will to deliver these stories to them. Eventually, I started becoming comfortable and telling myself, “This is how I want the story to be told. Some will like it, some won’t…and that’s okay.” It takes practice. What is the most memorable article you’ve written? My most memorable was my first celebrity interview. I was 20 years old and offered the opportunity for a face-to-face interview with Brooke Shields. I’ve never done anything like that at the time, let alone meet a celebrity. It was a monumental day for me. It really gave me the confidence to keep going. I felt so empowered! What are your future plans as a writer?

Currently, I am working on my very first novel! It’s been a lifelong goal of mine and it takes discipline. I’m committed to writing a little bit every day – even if it’s just 100 words. I’ll also continue writing for Orlando and Tampa Style Magazine, exploring new places and sharing those experiences in the magazines. Any advice for aspiring writers? Don’t be afraid of your voice. Your voice is what makes you unique - your audience will find you. The biggest problem is when we try to write to please others. Don’t do that. Write every single day. Even if it’s in a journal. Also, read as much as you write. Some of the best writers are inspired by other writers. Lastly, be confident and put the work in. You’ll never know where the road will lead to.

VEGAN MAKEUP
Everything you need to know about making the switch to vegan cosmetics
Now more than ever, people are making compassionate choices about the products they use every day. You’re probably more likely to read the ingredients on a box of cereal than a tube of mascara, and you’re not alone. While veganism is becoming a popular diet choice among health and environmentally conscious people, many don’t know about the vegan options available for the areas of their lives that aren’t food related, like clothes, cosmetics, and makeup products. People overlook the fact that the ingredients in makeup products are often filled with animal-derived components that can be detrimental to your skin and health. When a product is advertised as cruelty-free, that does not necessarily make it vegan. Crueltyfree products are simply not tested on animals, while true vegan cosmetics do not contain any ingredients extracted from animals, including insects. According to People Ethical Treatment of Animals, beeswax and honeycomb are some of the most commonly used additives in products like eye shadow, mascara, lipstick, and other face makeup. Not to be a “buzz-kill,” but the bees need their own wax in order to provide for offspring and preserve honey for the winter. Without healthy bees to pollinate crops, our future looks devastating. That’s just one of the many reasons to start buying vegan cosmetics. When it comes to integrating values with beauty, vegan makeup is the perfect place to start. Among the good of supporting a worthy cause, it’s also better suited for sensitive skin. Although many
vegan cosmetics can be far more expensive than non-vegan cosmetics, you may want to consider spending a pretty penny in order to reap the benefits. Ingredients like honey and lecithin, a byproduct found in the nervous tissue of living organisms, are often used in lipsticks and liquid powders and can cause allergic reactions in certain users. Vegan products are seen as superior because they have fewer ingredients, and the ingredients are more natural. These products are less likely to cause or aggravate acne, rashes, dry skin, or other skin conditions, and can even heal damaged skin with its wholesome qualities. Wondering how to take the leap and find vegan makeup products to shop for? PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies program is the answer to your vegan prayers. It is designed to share information about companies that sell cruelty-free and vegan products. With more than 4,200 companies in their database, you’ll need to look no further. A few of the companies listed as cruelty-free and vegan include Adorn Cosmetics, whose slogan is “luxury without the guilt,” and Babydoll Cosmetics, who specialize in premium quality false eyelashes. If you’re looking for a more affordable way to support veganism, brands like ELF and Milani offer some vegan options for a fraction of the cost of other companies. Making the choice to purchase vegan makeup not only impacts your own health and wellness, but the future of the animals and the environment that we live in.

Created in 1934, it was baptized with the nickname of Louis – the youngest of the Arpels brothers. The Ludo bracelet is shaped like a belt; distinguished by its flexible mesh, it is punctuated by a bucklelike clasp, set with precious stones. It has renewed itself over the years in a multitude of guises, while remaining
true to its original design. Just as a belt adds structure to the silhouette and accentuates a slender waist, the Ludo bracelet highlights the graceful outline of a feminine wrist. The Ludo bracelet illustrates one of the Maison’s key inspirations: the world of couture. Ever since its foundation, this theme has nourished Van Cleef & Arpels’ creativity, in jewels that reinterpret the allure of bows, the patterns of fabrics or the delicacy of lace.

CAN YOU OUT-EXERCISE A BAD DIET? 50
| STYLETOME.COM
HEALTH
By Khadejah Khan We all know that one person who says, “I eat what I want and then just work it off at the gym,” and then proceeds to stuff their face with pizza, tacos, and cheeseburgers. But is there any truth to out-exercising a crappy diet? In short: NO. Working out like a monster is not going to counteract a bad diet, it’ll only make it harder for you to achieve your fitness goals. Different foods have good and bad side effects toward various parts of the body. Healthy foods contribute essential nutrients which impact our skin, sleeping patterns, and joints, for example. Dense foods that are rich in calories but low in healthy nutrients can make us feel groggy and bloated (think Popeye versus Garfield). So if you’re regularly eating junk foods like fries and doughnuts, heading to the gym for 45-60 minutes is not going to work off your Wendy’s 4 for $4 either. Instead, it gets stored as fat and disrupts your #gainz. Perhaps the only people who can justify a bad diet are pro athletes. They require an enormous amount of caloric fuel because they burn off the intake with frequent exercise and high intensity workouts, aka energy output. For the average person, it’s a lot harder to work off your caloric intake, no matter how much we believe we live at the gym and breath exercise. Unless you’re training to be the new Michael Phelps or a linebacker at the next Superbowl, there’s no rationale for unlimited breadsticks at Olive Garden. Having a bad diet and keeping your physique may have worked when you were in high school, but that’s not the case once you pass 25. Your metabolic rate, or how quickly you burn calories or fat, is at its highest in your teens and early 20s, even if you didn’t exercise regularly, meaning, eating fast food during your lunch block was fine and dandy whether or not you had track practice later. However, everyone’s metabolic rate is different and determined by genetics, and as we get older our metabolism slows. Such is life, unfortunately. So what about that person we all know who believes they can have their cake and eat it, too? One: they might be lucky and have a high metabolic rate (try not to let that jealousy get to you). Two (and most likely): they’re not going to see the results they want. Having bottomless fries at Red Robin then working it off didn’t cancel out the fries; it just made it more difficult to lose. Therefore a regular diet high in bad fats and sugars will constantly get in the way of your gym goals. It’s unreasonable to quit an entire diet cold-turkey. But in small ways, the key is to make smart food choices that when stored are healthy for us and give us good nutrients, but will also be “easier” to work off.

Plant Based Diet Chat
with Head of Nutrition for Huel, James Collier B Y D A N A D A M AT O
So you’ve been thinking about switching to a plant based diet, but are unsure of how sufficient it is to your overall health and nutrition. I’m excited to have had a plant based diet chat with head of nutrition for Huel, James Collier. James has over 26 years of experience working in nutrition and dietetics, including seven years as a Clinical Dietitian in the National Health Service (NHS), where he worked with patients with a range of medical ailments and food intolerances. James also provides advice to top level bodybuilders and strength athletes, as well as regular gym goers on their nutritional needs for optimum performance. Continue reading to learn more about James’ work and how he thinks a plant based diet can fuel your healthy lifestyle. Can you begin by explaining what Huel is and what its goal(s) is (are) as a company?
Huel’s mission is to make nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food with minimum impact on animals and the environment. Huel powder is made from six main raw food ingredients: oats, brown rice, pea, flaxseed, sunflower, and coconut - blended into powdered form and usually mixed with water. How did you get started with Huel and what is your current role?
I became one of the co-founders of Huel when Julian Hearn approached me in 2014 with an idea – to create a nutritionally complete meal in shake format that contained a balance of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fats, as well as all essential vitamins and minerals required for a complete meal. Within two weeks, I had developed the first version of Huel powder. My role at Huel is Head of Nutrition, and I lead the team of nutritionists. We continue to develop the formulas for the brand’s growing product range. Huel has been on an aggressive growth path since launch in 2015. We’ve introduced a variety of new products and flavors to meet customer tastes and preferences. We now sell over 1.5 million meals per month to customers 52

from over 80 countries. It’s a really exciting time for us – we’ve recently achieved 50 million meals consumed by ‘Hueligans.’ Can you provide details about why a plant based diet is sufficient for our everyday health?
A plant based diet is a diet that consists mainly of foods from plants. Such foods include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains. Animal products are minimal, if any. A misconception with plant based eating is that it is not easy to consume the same quality of nutrients found in meat such as protein, iron, and vitamin B12. This is incorrect. It is possible to achieve the recommended vitamins and minerals through plant based eating. By focusing on plants as your main food source, you may actually find your plate will include a greater variety of nutrients. There are many reasons why people eat a plant based diet, including environmental, ethical, and health concerns. I am not suggesting to eliminate meat from a person’s diet completely; however, reducing meat and animal food consumption is one of the quickest and simple ways an individual can reduce their carbon footprint. Taking the time to plan your meals is key. I recommend making small changes over time. For example, start by eating one plant based meal a day. This will be easier to stick with rather than making large, unsustainable changes overnight. Would someone have to eat more to obtain a sufficient amount of protein and vitamins if they switched to a plant based diet?
Plant based eating provides a number of health benefits (and it’s good for the environment too). It’s important to ensure that with a plant based diet, you can get the recommended amounts of all nutrients. Taking the time to plan will also make plant based eating achievable. Eat a variety of foods, especially different
color foods, as these contain different levels of nutrients. For example, the phytonutrient lycopene, which is an antioxidant that protects against cell damage and gives tomatoes its red color. Other carotenoids also act as antioxidants and give fruit and vegetables their orange and yellow colors; for example, carrots. Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in helping the body produce red blood cells and is perceived as tricky to get enough of with a plant based diet. The good news is it need not be. As a start, try incorporating plant based milks that are that are fortified with B12, as well as calcium and vitamin D. Cereals, meat alternatives, and some soy products are often fortified with B12 too. Taking a B12 supplement also rids any concerns. Ensure adequate omega-3 consumption. If oily fish is not part of your eating plan, then foods such as walnuts, soy products, and flaxseed are ways to obtain a good intake of omega-3s. Flaxseed is one of Huel’s six main ingredients and is rich in the omega-3 essential fatty acid ALA. Omega-3 fats are generally low in a Western diet and adequate omega-3 consumption is crucial to support cardiovascular health. Keep your intake of iron up. Iron is not just found in meat food sources. Dark leafy greens, nuts, and dried fruits are great sources of iron. Iron is crucial for oxygen transport, cognitive function, and the immune system. Iron from plant sources can be harder to absorb, but again, there’s no need to worry: iron absorption can also be increased by the presence of vitamin C, which is found in lots of fruits and vegetables such as oranges and peppers. It’s where the idea of having orange juice with breakfast comes from – to increase the absorption of iron that is in breakfast cereals. There are many protein-rich foods available to a plant based diet, for example beans, lentils, soy products, hummus, nuts, and seeds. There are misconceptions about plant-based proteins in that people claim that they are inferior to meat, eggs, and dairy proteins, which isn’t the case. Although the amino acid profile of a single plant based protein source may be inferior to an
PEOPLE
A MISCONCEPTION WITH PLANT BASED EATING IS THAT IT IS NOT EASY TO CONSUME THE SAME QUALITY OF NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MEAT SUCH AS PROTEIN, IRON, AND VITAMIN B12.
animal protein, this is easy to get around simply by combining more than one source of plant protein in a meal. For example, beans and rice both contain good amounts of protein. How does a plant based diet support an athlete or someone trying to gain muscle mass?
For athletic performance and muscle-building you need a good intake of all nutrients, especially protein and carbs. As described above, you can get a good protein intake with sufficient amounts of all the essential amino acids through combining protein-rich foods at a meal, like beans and rice, or nuts and seeds. Moreover, an adequate intake of starchy carbohydrate foods – like rice, pasta, oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes – reduces the need for such a high protein intake.
How does it support everyday health, even for those who aren’t athletes or want to gain muscle?
Is there anything else you’d like to add on about why a plant based diet is sufficient for athletes?
Diets rich in plant foods provide a number of nutrients that have health benefits. For example, fruits, oats, and pulses are rich in soluble fibers with benefits to cardiovascular health. Meals rich in fiber also typically support a steady blood glucose level, as long as they are also low in overly-processed carbs, like sugar. Plus antioxidant vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients are found in plant foods, including vitamins C and E, selenium, and carotenoids as discussed above.
Athletes do require more nutrition than nonathletes. This applies to all nutrients – vitamins, minerals, fiber, fat, as well as carbs and protein. The key is to eat a wide range of different foods: tree fruits, berries, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, grains, and oils. Oils – due to their energy-density – can be the athlete’s friend as long as they are the right oils supplying healthy fats; great oils include coconut oil, canola oil, the right type of sunflower oil, and extra virgin olive oil.
Diets containing too much meat have been linked to bowel cancer, and diets rich in fiber have been shown to massively lower the risk, so there are obvious benefits here. STYLETOME.COM |

BACK PAIN?

As Hurricane Dorian came barreling towards the coast in early September, Floridians braced for what could have been a category 5 storm. All across the state, we lugged pallets of water, hauled outdoor furniture in, and hoisted sheets of metal and wood onto windows to try to protect our homes. Ultimately and thankfully, Dorian did not bring destruction to our external structures. Sadly, though, it may have to our internal ones. You, or perhaps your friends and neighbors, may be walking a little differently post-storm scare. It turns out that all of that lugging, hauling, and hammering wrought havoc on the backs of your fellow Floridians. Back pain is one of the most common conditions for which people seek medical attention, and simple, unexpected movements can bring on painful strains. But like a hurricane, it is much wiser to prepare and protect ourselves before the event rather than trying to repair the damage afterwards. Just as we fortify our homes in advance of the storm, we need to strengthen our backs to hold steady when one of our most important structures is called upon to do tasks as mundane as lifting laundry baskets or as challenging as putting up shutters. If you’ve ever had a bad back strain, odds are good that you were referred for physical therapy. And odds are also good that the physical therapy helped. Perhaps you sought alternative therapies for the back pain such as chiropractic care or acupuncture. In that case, the odds are equally good that these treatments helped too. In studies of therapies for acute back pain, it turns out massage, chiropractic, physical therapy, and acupuncture all provide relief for a few weeks to months. In severe cases, spinal injections may work well. And then they all seem to wear off. In one recent study, most of the participants were back (yes, I did that on purpose) to where they started after one year.
It is clearly better to not injure our backs in the first place. So, what can we do to protect ourselves? The answer is simple to suggest but harder to commit to— we need to strengthen our cores. Think of your core as the muscles around your middle. It’s your abdominal wall and also the lesser known muscles surrounding your spine. These need to be both strong like shutters and flexible like palm tree trunks. It means strengthening exercises like planks and lifting need to be accompanied by stretching exercises specifically targeted to the spine and its surrounding structures. Physical therapists routinely prescribe these exercises and personal trainers who have done extra study around caring for backs can be a great resource too. For the DIYers, the Mayo Clinic website offers a great series of exercises with step-by-step instructions and pictures. The catch is, unlike hurricane preparation, there is no season for back building. Like brushing our teeth, the exercises are best done daily, or even twice a day (note: definitely brush your teeth at least twice a day). But also, unlike hurricane preparation, it need not take hours. Just five or ten minutes of core stretching and strengthening a day can mean reducing or eliminating days or weeks of future pain. If you wait until you’ve hurt yourself, it’s so much harder to bounce back (yup, I did it again).

Tips on having clean, attractive hands & feet, gents! Whether you want to admit it or not, nails are very important in hygiene, and overall looks. If you think people aren’t paying attention to your hands, you’re wrong. So here are some tips on keeping your hands, nails and feet looking groomed always. First things first, it all starts in the shower. Use a nail brush to loosen and remove any dirt under your nails. This will be much easier to do if your skin is soft and wet from the shower. For a deeper clean, invest in a pumice stone that will scrub away the hard and dead skin. If you regularly run, jog, or enjoy active sports then you may find that this also forms on the side of your feet and around your toes. Remove this as much as possible and as often as possible. Now it’s time to trim the nails. It is important that you don’t cut too short. Always avoid cutting into the nail bed. If your preference is to have zero white of the nail, that’s ok, but anything shorter is too short. Also, you could cut/hurt yourself if you cut your nails too short, and that can lead to infections.
Another tip for nails is keeping them smooth. As far as how to shape them, that’s up to you. But you should always file your nails after you cut them. You want to make sure you smooth out any sharp edges or corners to prevent scratches or snagging on your clothes. Nails that are not filed are also prone to breakage. Don’t be afraid to go to a salon. It is not just for girls, and if you feel more comfortable with having someone else take care of your hands and feet, then definitely go to a salon; they are the experts! Also, lotion up, boys. Making sure your skin on your hands and feet is hydrated is very important for your skin’s health and for not looking ashy. Cracked skin can cause bleeding, among other things that will cause discomfort.

CELEBRITY SOUP
In the rise of social media, times have certainly changed when it comes to celebrity endorsements and brand ambassadors. Luxury labels used to fight over having Hollywood’s most mature and sophisticated celebrities as the face of their brand, but those days seem to be over as more and more labels are trading in established celebrity partners for young millennial influencers who can help them reach younger consumers.
BULGARI Italian brand Bulgari is famous for its glamorous gemstone jewellery, luxury watches, perfumes and leather goods. Actresses Rachel Weisz and Julianne Moore both starred in sensual campaigns for the luxury label when they were in their 40s and 50s. Nearly 10 years later, the brand opted for a much younger face in 21-year-old model Bella Hadid who helped push their Roman Night fragrance and fall/winter 2017 accessories collection. Since then, Bulgari has went on to introduce their youngest brand ambassador to date in 15-year-old model and songwriter Koki who is the daughter of celebrated Japanese actor and singer Takuya Kimura. ESTÉE LAUDER American cosmetics company Estée Lauder is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of quality skin care, makeup, fragrances and more. British actress Elizabeth Hurley landed her first modelling job at 29 years old when she partnered with the prestigious brand and she remained the face of Estée Lauder until 2001 when she was 36-years-old. In 2014, 19-year-old Kendall Jenner was brought on board as a noticeably younger brand ambassador than previous faces for the label. Then in 2018, model Karlee Kloss joined the growing list of Estée Lauder ambassadors and became the new face of the 72-year-old brand at 25-years-old. DIOR French luxury goods company Christian Dior has worked with a number of famed celebrities to help push their renowned label. From 2006 to 2010, Italian actress and model Monica Bellucci appeared in numerous Dior campaigns promoting cosmetics, fragrances and handbags.
The fact that she was in her late 40s didn’t seem to be an issue, but over the next decade the brand’s faces have gotten noticeably younger. In 2015, 27-year-old Rihanna partnered with the brand for the first Dior campaign to feature a celebrity of colour and earlier this year, Dior named 21-yearold British singer Jorja Smith their brand new global makeup ambassador. TAG HEUER In 2012, 40-year-old Cameron Diaz lent her star power to Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer and became the celebrity face of their new line of Link Lady watches. Her campaign ads were a picture of sophistication, much like those of Uma Thurman when she became a Tag Heuer brand ambassador in 2005 at 35-years-old. The Tag Heuer brand has continued to work with a variety of familiar faces over the years including 26-year-old British model and actress Cara Delevingne. Cara became the face of multiple Tag Heuer campaigns including a 2015 ad that saw her posing with a real lion cub for which she received intense criticism from animal rights groups. As a result, Cara auctioned off her watch to raise funds for wildlife in Africa and last year she returned to the Tag Heuer brand for a new wildlife photoshoot with a lion at a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa.
to the “original brand ambassador” for Hubert de Givenchy. The French house has recently announced that 26-year-old superstar Ariana Grande will front its winter 2019 campaign not only as herself, but also as an homage to a modern day Audrey Hepburn. CHANEL Perhaps one of the most drastic evolutions in terms of celebrity endorsements has come from Chanel. In the 80s, French model and style icon Ines de la Fressange became the first to ever sign an exclusive contract with Chanel and she remained the face of the brand until 1989 at 32-years-old. The label has since turned to a variety of other Hollywood stars and in 2016, Karl Lagerfeld named young starlet Willow Smith as a new face for the French fashion house. The 15-year-old daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith landed several campaigns with the luxury brand and made her Paris Fashion Week debut at Chanel’s fall 2016 show. Fortunately, there’s still hope for the more seasoned celebrities looking to partner with the brand as 45-year-old Oscarwinning actress Penélope Cruz was chosen to become the new Chanel ambassador in 2018.
GIVENCHY The iconic French luxury fashion and perfume house was founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy. The most famous ambassador of the brand, who also happened to be the first, was Audrey Hepburn. Hubert and Audrey stuck with each other through seven films from 1954 to 1987 including Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Audrey was 58-years-old during her last on screen endorsement of the luxury brand, but a much younger face is about to pay homage

HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE AM I COVERED? As another Florida Hurricane season comes to a close and we approach the end of the year, it is a good time to take stock of your insurance policies and any deficiencies that may be present. After a loss has occurred, it is too late to adjust coverage. Therefore, it is important to be proactive regarding your knowledge of the value of your home and its contents to better understand if unexpected losses will fall under existing insurance coverage. Understanding Hurricane Insurance and the Applicable Deductibles
Mark NeJame
John W. Zielinski
John W. Zielinski, Senior Civil Litigation Partner & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article
By Florida statute, the application of hurricane deductibles is triggered by windstorm losses resulting only from a hurricane declared by the National Weather Service. Hurricane deductibles are the amount that a homeowner is obligated to pay before the insurance company has an obligation to pay for damages due to a loss associated with a hurricane. Hurricane deductibles apply for damage that occurs from the time a hurricane watch or warning is issued for any part of Florida, up to 72 hours after such a watch or warning ends and anytime hurricane conditions exist throughout the state. Hurricane deductibles and their triggers are set by law and are the same for the private, or regular market, as well as Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (CPIC), the state-run program which provides property insurance to consumers. The hurricane deductible applies only once during a hurricane season. All insurers must offer a hurricane deductible of $500, 2 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent of the policy dwelling or structure limits. The percentages are based on the total value of the home. Before the hurricane strikes, it is important to know your deductible or adjust it if you want the insurance company to pay more for your losses. Be sure to investigate loss mitigation discounts or credits due for taking steps to reduce the level of risk at your home. A new (or newer) roof will work to reduce future insurance cost. Search for and obtain a wind mitigation inspection report. The cost is not great for an inspection, but can result in the savings of hundreds, if not thousands, in insurance cost. The credits due for reducing risk are applied to property insurance premiums. Keep in mind that these discounts are available for personal and commercial residential property only. The CPIC (Citizens), Florida’s state-run insurer of last resort will insure new homeowners in high-risk

areas and others who cannot find coverage in the open private market. Under Florida law, Citizens may write a new insurance policy only if no comparable private market coverage is available or comparable private market policy premiums are more than 15 percent higher than a comparable Citizens policy. The Florida Market Assistance Program is a free referral service designed to match consumers who cannot find property insurance with Florida-licensed agents and insurers who are writing new business. Each of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, CPIC (Citizen’s) and Florida Market Assistance Program maintain websites where a homeowner can research issues. HomeOwner’s Insurance Wellness Check It is recommended that every homeowner annually review insurance coverage to anticipate potential losses. Speak with your insurance agent when questions arise. Many policies don’t cover specific valuable items unless the items are listed in detail with the insurance company by a Rider. The items included will need current appraisals or receipts to verify the purchase. Photograph your valuables that are included in your list of items that will be covered. This could include jewelry, art pieces and expensive dining settings. Save receipts/appraisals by photograph or scanning into computer zipdrives. For expensive items, keep a copy or zipdrive off the site of the property (possibly using a safe deposit box at your local Bank). Many policies do not cover simple losses of property. If you drop a ring down the sink or it is flushed down the toilet accidentally, it may not be a covered loss. Discuss with your agent to make certain that valuables are covered from every day types of losses beyond what we all think of as covered events, such as theft or fire losses. If your property has an alarm system or other mitigating conditions to reduce the risk of theft or fire, it is possible that discounts are available. Always check with your insurance agent for discounts. Finally, you can adjust your deductibles to reduce cost of insurance, but understand that when you raise the deductible to lessen the insurance cost burden, it will increase the Owner’s contribution to a loss if that should occur.

MICKI BLACKBURN Micki Blackburn Realty
I love Real Estate; It has been very good to me and to many, many other people. It’s a fair industry, because you really do get back what you put into it. This said by, I’ve been selling Real Estate in South Lake County, Sumter and West Orange counties since 1972 and my only regret is that I didn’t start it earlier in life. Micki Blackburn Realty has three offices, located in Clermont, Mascotte and Webster with thirty two agents and three administrative staff members and it all works wonderfully. Many of my agents have been with me for over 20 years and we’ve become like a family. We have shared so much together thought the years both good and bad. I have made good friends thought the years because of this industry and now I am selling not only to them, but to the next generation. It’s been really fun! Micki loves to see people succeed and enjoys the success of all of her agents. My advice to new Realtors…is to find a good company, to work with and stay there! Many times Realtors hurt themselves by frequently changing companies and offices too often. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Just fertilize and water on your own side of the fence and you will grow. Throughout the years Micki has learned that being honest and ethical is crucial in having an enduring business. Give back to your community and to your customers. Check in on your customers, send cards, and remind your customers who you are.

JENN CARLISLE Broker Associate / Weichert, Realtors Jenn Carlisle began selling real estate in the Orlando market in 2006 and quickly rose to the top 2% of all Orlando Realtors. She is a Top Ten Volume Producer in the state of Florida and a Top 100 Volume Producer in the nation for her company Weichert, Realtors. As a former high school teacher, she knows the value of education and holds many designations and certifications, including the prestigious Graduate, Realtor Institute (GRI) and the Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), which is held by fewer than 2% of Realtors nationwide. She is also Relocation Certified, an Accredited Buyers Representative, a Certified Short Sale Professional and holds her Broker’s License. Coming into the industry as the market was taking a downturn, Jenn wasn’t afforded the luxury of having business handed to her and accepted the challenge of a difficult business environment. She grew her business through hosting open houses, knocking on doors and developing lasting relationships with her clients. But don’t take our word for how wonderful she is, here’s what others have said about her: “Jenn is amazing! Being first time home buyers, she helped us with every step along the way and answered every silly question we had! She was available by text, phone, and email quicker than I would expect. We appreciated everything she did for us from beginning to end.” ~ Cassie and Alex S. “Jenn was the listing agent for a property I was interested in back in 2015. My credit wasn’t high enough to purchase anything at that time, but over the years Jenn kept in touch with me. She regularly sent me listings in my area via email. By summer 2017 I was back on my feet financially and Jenn set me up with several viewings. Even with the hurricane bearing down on us right in the middle of the contract phase, Jenn kept her cool and a month later I own a home! I’d recommend Jenn to anyone searching for an experienced and savvy realtor!” ~ Mark A. “Jenn helped me sell my first house. I did not know what to expect of this process as I had never been through it before, but she helped make every step of the way much easier with thorough communication and patience. From her presentation of what selling my house would look like through her company to actual listing and professional photographs to scheduling showings to contracts/inspection/ appraisal and finally to closing, she was always there in a very organized manner. She goes above and beyond requirements to make sure everyone is happy and does whatever she can to make a sale work out for the seller.” ~ Stephanie S. If you’re looking for a Realtor who goes beyond your expectations and treats you as family, then Jenn Carlisle is the optimal choice. She wakes up each morning focused on helping you achieve your real estate goals and works tirelessly to help you accomplish them.

DANNY HILWA P. A.
Accredited Luxury Home Specialist Danny Hilwa has a unique passion for Orlando, having lived in the area for 42 years since he was 3 years old. Attending Park Maitland, Trinity Prep and Rollins College he has watched Central Florida develop from a small town into the magnificent city that it is today. He has been licensed for 19 years specializing in high-end luxury properties, gaining intense experience with a proven track record of results with top sales and numerous awards throughout his career. Danny has earned the top producer award in his office every year and is in the top percent of agents in Orlando. He is an Accredited Luxury Home Specialist (ALHS) and is fluent in English, Spanish and Arabic. Danny believes that the key to this industry is loyalty and treating each client like family rather than as a transaction, many agents preach this but rarely follow through. As a result, he is proud and humbled to have an amazing reputation built by repeat clients and referrals using very little self-advertising. He is committed to his family and feels his upbringing is the foundation of his ability. In fact Danny and his wife Diana live in the same neighborhood as his parents and brother, which he feels is his biggest blessing. Danny has over $95 million in personal sales that he has solely earned. Starting way before the real estate boom, enduring the crippling 5 year recession and continuing to grow in the new technology driven market of
today Danny thrives in the mindset that Real Estate is an ever changing industry. He has developed amazing skills in the art of negotiation because all the postcards and commercials mean nothing if your agent does not understand that the core of real estate is raw and strategic negotiation. The general public does not realize that agents often combine their sales figures together in ads and postcards to show an impressive amount in an attempt to lure your business. Many do the same when representing “combined years of experience.” Always remember that even the best surgeon can only do so many procedures without sacrificing the quality and attention to each patient. Also remember that you will truly only be hiring ONE agent to represent you, even in the largest office you really only work with one agent. Danny urges you to find the agent, not the office, who will give you the attention you need and deserve to make the process work in your best interest. Find the agent that will advise you what is best for you and your family Not what is best for their pocketbook. As a resident of Vizcaya, Danny specializes solely in Dr. Phillips, Windermere and Lake Nona, with 100 percent of his sales in these areas he knows and loves. He is truly honored to be able to be a part of Orlando’s growth and would love the opportunity to represent you and your family. Considering his humility and dedication to the luxury market and Danny’s love for Orlando, his motto remains the same from the day he started two decades ago: “The one thing money will never buy you is class!

I get immense satisfaction from every successful transaction.” Patricia started her career in Real Estate in 1997 and joined a commercial firm in 2004. “When I was 24, I was recruited to work for an up and coming commercial brokerage and it was one of the most exciting and challenging positions I have had in my career. I worked directly with Billy Bishop and learned about sales volume, production, and marketing. One of the things I observed during those early years was how important relationships are and how important it is to focus on the long term effects of every transaction and not just the immediate closing.” In 2007, she joined the Olde Town Brokers family of companies to focus more on the core of Orlando & Winter Park and to be able to sell Residential Investment Property. “I really have a passion for both residential and commercial real estate and to get the opportunity to work with Phil Rampy, Craig Ustler, and Tom Ustler was beyond exciting. I truly believe it is important to surround yourself with people you can learn from as technology, business, economics, and real estate is always evolving. Phil and Craig had this vision and enthusiasm for Orlando that was unparalleled and Tom’s experience is untouchable. Now I work directly with Phil and his sister Maria and we have so much passion for what we do every day. It never feels like work.”
Now Patricia has a team including a buyers agent, marketing specialist, and transaction coordinator. She is known by her extensive client base as a “one stop shop” for all real estate related matters. She is a true “Deal Doctor” with an impeccable closing rate on her listings. She has extensive experience in the sale of Condominiums and Single Family Homes and also specializes and holds various designations in the sale of Multi-Family, Estate Listings, Office, Retail, and Mixed-Use Development. She has consistently ranked in the Top 5 agents of Olde Town Brokers for sales. She has also been recognized by Orlando Magazine as a Top Orlando agent year after year and has been annually ranked as a Premier Orlando REALTOR, Real Estate Hot 100, Five Star Professional, 100 REALTOR Hall of Fame, and various investment real estate recognitions. She has sold and leased over $100,000,000 in real estate and easily participated in over 500 transactions. In her spare time, Patricia enjoys her Winter Park home with her family and menagerie of rescued animals, mentoring children in foster care, traveling, being on the ocean and volunteering with animal rescue organizations. “It’s been such a pleasure to work with Patricia for all these years. Watching her grow and be successful and now be recognized as one of Central Florida’s TOP REALTORS make me proud!” - Phil Rampy “Patricia is one of the most thorough Realtors in Orlando. It comes naturally, as her Great Grandmother was one of Orlando’s first female Real Estate Brokers. I completely trust her with all of my real estate needs.” - Ericka Dunlap “Patricia is a gem. She is smart, caring, open, and honest and kept us at ease throughout our home selling experience. She is always available for questions or concerns and her professionalism is impressive.” - Dan Martin “Patricia was very diligent and thoughtful during the entire real estate transaction which was so important in order to bring a complicated commercial transaction to close. -Lamont Garber

Additionally, Dr. Cote is credentialed in oral and IV sedation, ensuring his patients are comfortable during care. A commitment to lifetime learning guarantees Dr. Cote’s patients are in the best hands.
