Dear Readers, As I write this column, I feel as if we are still living in some sort of alternate reality.

Masks and social-distancing have become an everyday way of life for most and has become second nature for us.

REFLECTING THE MINIMALIST PHILOSOPHY THAT UNDERPINS NEW ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST

In 2009, Rolls-Royce announced a new addition to its portfolio that offered something entirely different to its flagship Phantom. This product resonated with a new group of men and women who responded to the marque’s relentless pursuit of perfection in design, engineering and craftsmanship, but sought a more modest and minimalist expression of Rolls-Royce. The execution of the first Goodwood Ghost, and its laser focus on meeting the demands of its clients, was an unmitigated success, and over the course of its ten-year lifecycle, this transformative motor car became the most successful product in the company’s 116-year history. Ghost’s formidable success was vital in enabling the brand to scale up production, invest in its capabilities and establish Rolls-Royce as the truly global brand it is today.

Additionally, Ghost’s decade-long market presence enabled the marque’s Luxury Intelligence Specialists to gather vital information about developing behaviours in how Ghost clients use their motor car, how they commission it and how they perceive Rolls-Royce. These highly successful and diverse entrepreneurs and founders, who selected this product to celebrate their ongoing ascension, were citizens of the world – they had been educated abroad, they travelled extensively and experienced Rolls-Royce in many cultures.

Due to Ghost’s energetic, dynamic personality, these clients came to realise that the RollsRoyce brand could offer more than a chauffeurdriven experience. Indeed, in the United States of America and areas of Europe, clients were self-driving their Ghost from the very early stages of its introduction. Meanwhile, in Asia, clients were engaging heavily in the connected technology on board, be it for business or pleasure.

Across all markets, when clients commissioned their Ghost they asked the marque’s representatives about the driving experience, even if they had selected an extended wheelbase. During the weekend, this business tool morphed into a discreet celebration – clients would switch to the driver’s seat and relish a trip to a restaurant or second home with their friends and family. They celebrated this breadth of character, and this reflected in less formal colourways and more personalisation in the driver’s eyeline. These were profound learnings.

Meanwhile, at Goodwood, significant advances were being made with the marque’s proprietary aluminium spaceframe architecture. First used on Phantom, then Cullinan, this spaceframe is unique to Rolls-Royce and enables the brand’s designers and engineers to develop an authentically super-luxury product, free from the constraints of platforms used to

underpin high-volume vehicles. As Ghost clients required even more of their motor car, Rolls-Royce used its architecture to respond, incorporating technology such as all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering in Ghost, unlocking an entirely new, purposeful personality.

Concurrently, the design team were tracking an emerging movement that came to define Ghost’s aesthetic treatment. It spoke of a shifting attitude among Ghost clients in the way success is expressed. Named ‘Post Opulence’ internally, it is characterised by reduction and substance. In service to this, exceptional materials must be selected and celebrated. Design must be limited, intelligent and unobtrusive. This philosophy is the antithesis of ‘premium mediocracy’, a term coined by the fashion cognoscenti. This refers to products that use superficial treatments, such as large branding or, in the context of motor cars, busy stitching and other devices that create an illusion of luxury by dressing products lacking in substance in a premium skin.

The collective result is new Ghost. This is a motor car precisely tailored to its clients, that appears perfect in its simplicity, that is underpinned by remarkable substance, that is less but better.

ALL-NEW FALL FOOD AND DRINK EVENT SERIES:

SIP, SAVOR AND STAY SATURDAYS The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort will debut a special series of weekly food and drink themed events this fall called Sip, Savor and Stay Saturdays: A New Twist on the Food & Wine Classic Experience.

Oct. 3: Italian Wines & Bites – A delicious trip for guests’ taste buds across the Atlantic showcasing top Italian wines varietals from across the country’s famed regions from Sicily to Tuscany to Piedmont.

Every Saturday evening 5:30-7:30 p.m. through Oct. 24, a different culinary experience will take place exclusively for guests staying on the new Sip, Savor and Stay Saturdays overnight package. These limited-capacity, themed events created by the resort’s award-winning food and beverage team offer guests a new way to enjoy and celebrate different food and drink experiences each weekend and replaces the traditional Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic.

Oct. 10: Smokin’ D’s Bourbon, Beer, & BBQ – A selection of BBQ favorites handcrafted by the resort’s executive chef Dan Herman along with the best in bourbon and beer samplings.

Smokin’ D’s menu items are annual favorites at Food & Wine Classic and only offered at the resort select times each year.

The Sip, Savor and Stay Saturdays event lineup includes:

Oct. 17: Food & Wine Classic: Limited Edition (5:30-8 p.m.) – A new Food & Wine Classic experience, this event features fan favorites from the well-known Swan & Dolphin Food & Wine Classic in a more intimate setting.

Oct. 24: Oktoberfest Biergarten – An Oktoberfest party with German-themed music and tastings alongside a full selection of brews.

All events will be indoors and limited to 100 participants, except for the Food & Wine Classic: Limited Edition experience, which will be limited to 200 participants in a larger space.

Tickets are available exclusively as a resort package. One-night packages start at $295 and include access for two adults. The Oct. 17 Food & Wine Classic: Limited Edition experience will start at $395 for a one-night package. To book call 1-888-828-8850. Events are limited to those 21 and older.

Among the protocols that will be implemented for each event are: temperature check for all attendees, plexiglass walls for all food service, all cast members wearing PPE, each group will receive their own socially distanced reserved table, touchless menus and clearly marked social distancing signage.

With a variety of restaurants and lounges and a distinguished culinary and beverage team, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort continually earns national recognition for its food and beverage program. The hotel features numerous certified wine sommeliers and 1,400 wine selections.

To say the thinking around alcohol consumption in the U.S. swings like a pendulum might be an understatement. Pendulums generally move predictably back and forth. The advice on whether we should drink and how much is probably more like a small boat (captained by someone who has imbibed a bit too much) on choppy seas—you never know in which direction it might be pulled or if it might capsize completely.

At the turn of the 19th century, Benjamin Franklin is reported to have written that wine is “proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.” This thinking was far from universal and after vociferous campaigning, about 100 years later, Prohibition, making alcohol consumption illegal, was briefly the law of the land. This, as readers of history or watchers of gangster movies know, like a flaming hot tequila shot, did not go down smoothly. Rules around alcohol sales and consumption have been all over the place ever since.

Well, now it’s 2020 and since agreeing on anything is definitely out, the medical powers that be have decided that it would be good time to re-examine our alcohol guidelines.

For the past thirty years, the dietary guidelines on alcohol issued by the government every five years, have been pretty consistent—no more than two drinks a day for men, one for women. This year, it has been proposed that men should now also be limited to one drink. Although it hasn’t made it into the official suggestions yet, it has also been proposed that women should drink less than one drink, and perhaps really, no one should be drinking at all.

But wait! Isn’t some level of alcohol consumption supposed to be protective against heart disease?

And the answer is yes—the guidelines we have been looking at for thirty years are based on the data that moderate alcohol consumption does indeed reduce risk of atherosclerotic heart disease.

Unfortunately, over the last several decades, research detailing the risks of alcohol has been emerging, associating its consumption with various cancers, accidental deaths, and not-so-surprising rates of addiction.

When a team of researchers aggregated the risks and benefits in an article that ran in the wellregarded medical journal, The Lancet in 2018, they proposed that the risks won out and there was no safe level of alcohol consumption they could recommend.

And that’s fair. The data around the risks of alcohol have been pouring in for a while. All things considered, it probably isn’t great for us. But neither are French Fries or sugar, both of which probably contribute to as many, if not more, health problems than alcohol does (though probably fewer car accidents). You’d be hard pressed to find a medical professional who advocates consumption of fries and sugar, so adding alcohol to the list of things better avoided isn’t a great leap.

Dizzy yet?

How can both studies be true? Well, first, it should be acknowledged that both studies are populationbased and not randomized trials and therefore not the best quality evidence. The people who drink a bit, but not too much, may also avoid too much sugar and exercise more. The people who don’t drink at all may have health problems, like diabetes, that make avoiding alcohol a good idea, but may cut their lives a bit short. It’s hard to know what exactly is contributing to the longevity. Could it be the alcohol? Sure. Could it be something else? Also yes.

Let’s be honest. 2020 has been a rough year and pretty much one in which news we don’t want to hear keeps popping up like ice cubes in a Moscow Mule. In short, alcohol probably isn’t great for us healthwise, but I’ll raise a drink to hoping the guideline writers give us a break and hold off a little while on making it official.

But like that boat rocking back and forth, another study published in 2018 in Circulation, another wellregarded medical journal, noted that moderate alcohol consumption (which they defined as 0.5 to 1 drink a day for women and 0.5-2 drinks a day for men) was a marker for longevity.

October is officially among us, and the holiday synonymous with terrifying spooks and scares is right around the corner. Of course, what’s no big deal to one person can be downright frightening for another, so what better way to honor the Halloween season than by recounting some of the strangest things that terrify celebrities. Keep on reading for our list of the strangest celebrity phobias!

Kristen Bell — Pruney Fingers Dax Shepard revealed his famous wife’s bizarre fear on Instagram with a photo of the actress donning an unusual accessory in the swimming pool. The caption read, “My bride wears gloves in the pool because she hates the feeling of pruney fingertips on skin. #Hollyweird #iloveher.”

Shepard further discussed Bell’s self-dubbed “pool gloves” during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live saying, “When her fingertips are pruney she doesn’t want to touch other people’s skin.”

Khloe Kardashian — Belly Buttons Bell isn’t the only one who uses gloves to confront her fear! In 2016, Khloe Kardashian took to her website to reveal her bizarre phobia of belly buttons. She wrote of the fear saying, “I hate belly buttons. You can’t touch mine and I don’t want to touch yours. When I’m in the shower, I wear hand mitts and I scream every time I wash my belly button.”

Christina Ricci — Houseplants If you ask Christina Ricci, some things are just meant to stay outside! Ricci has botanophobia which is the fear of plants, but strangely enough, she’s only afraid of indoor house plants and says the “dirty” soil grosses her out. Ricci has spoken about the phobia in interviews saying that indoor houseplants disturb her and touching them is like torture. “They are dirty! If I have to touch one, then it freaks me out,” she said.

Oprah Winfrey — Chewing Gum Considering the fact that Oprah Winfrey’s chiclephobia is so bad that she’s banned it from her offices, I think it’s safe to say that we won’t get along too well! Like many people, I am a big fan of chewing gum, but Winfrey has apparently battled a deep fear of it since her childhood.

She explained the origins of the fear during an interview with Stephen Colbert saying, “I grew up poor in Mississippi...my grandmother used to try to save gum, so she would put it on the bedpost, she would put it on the cabinet. As a child, I used to bump into it and it would rub up against me, and you know what it’s like when you’ve taken it out of your mouth and it’s been out a couple of weeks? It’s bad. And so I was afraid of it.”

Megan Fox — Dry Paper Famed actress Megan Fox has a fear of the dark which is actually quite common, but did you know she also has a fear of touching dry paper?

Explained in her own words, “I don’t like dry paper. Scripts, newspapers or anything that’s not laminated, I have to keep licking my fingers.”

During an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Fox confessed that she even keeps a cup of water by her side when she’s reading scripts so that she can dip her fingers in before turning the page.

Ellen Page — Tennis Balls During the filming of X-Men: Days of Future Past, there were a few computer graphic-heavy scenes that required Ellen Page to convey genuine fear. What better way for the production

crew to accomplish this than by utilizing Page’s real-life phobia of tennis balls and turning them into props? “It really worked out for me, because I’m really afraid of them,” she said. “I couldn’t tell you what it is. Tennis comes on, I have to leave the room, it’s intense.”

Sean Combs — Toes We’ve had way too many ladies in this list! I think it’s time we pick a couple men, don’t you agree? Music icon Sean Combs (aka Diddy) confessed on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno that he has an intense phobia of people with a long second toe and that it has even affected his dating life. He’s discussed the fear in other interviews saying, “I somehow get to see the toe on the first date, it’s mandatory. I may not go for a kiss, but I’m definitely going to see if that second toe is long.”

Alfred Hitchcock — Eggs Who would’ve thought that the mastermind behind some of the scariest films in Hollywood would suffer from a fear of something as ordinary as an egg? In fact, Hitchcock much preferred the sight of blood to an egg! The late director spoke about his ovophobia saying, “I’m frightened of eggs. That white round thing without any holes … have you ever seen anything more revolting than an egg yolk breaking and spilling its yellow liquid?”

Brad Pitt has been totally committed to creating this Champagne house, which is not some new “celebrity wine,” but an authentic project of wine growers combining their expertise, skills and passion. This new, family-run adventure is, now, more than ever, focused on excellence and inspired by the legend of Countess Fleur de Miraval*.

The idea of FLEUR DE MIRAVAL sprang from the association of the two families, who had already united the wine world with that of the arts through the introduction of Miraval Côtes de Provence Rosé in 2012, and a third family with roots in Champagne for six generations: the Péters family. The Péters family, established in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger,

have been making Champagne from their own grapes since 1919. Today Rodolphe Péters runs the 50 acre estate, 40 of which are Grand Cru vineyards mainly around Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs.

Rodolphe’s Champagne is sold in some 70 countries around the world and delight all lovers of great Blanc de Blancs Champagnes.

Rodolphe has long been a fan of the wines of Château de Beaucastel and is close to the Perrin family.

“This project is, first and foremost, an artistic venture, because producing fine wines is a form of artistic creation,” explains Famille Perrin. “We have known Rodolphe Péters for many, many years and, like him, we are passionate about the great wines of the world. Yet, each time we’ve gotten together to taste fine, vintage Rosé Champagnes, we’ve come to the same conclusion: We love the aromas that these great Champagnes develop with age, especially when they lean towards Chardonnay, but we often also find heavy aromatic notes from the red wine, which

create an overall conflict with the harmony and nobility. This is why we wanted to create a different kind of Rosé Champagne that blended mature Chardonnay grapes with young Pinot Noir grapes.”

This blend of Chardonnay grapes of different ages makes up 75% of the final FLEUR DE MIRAVAL blend. The remaining 25% is from young Pinot Noir grapes, which gives the wine its subtle, pink color. Its tangy notes of red currant and red raspberry energize the delicate minerality, salinity and iodized expression of the Chardonnay grapes. The wine is then aged on lees in the dark cellars in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for three years before being released. Because Champagne is particularly sensitive to ultraviolet rays and sunlight, which can easily damage the wine, each Fleur de Miraval bottle is lacquered so that the wine is never exposed to light until the day the bottle is opened.
