GREG ALEXANDER Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to transmute all the quintessence of femininity on glazed paper. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

Christini’s Ristorante Italiano Celebrating 35 Years as an Orlando Restaurant Icon BY R I E S A PA S C A L

With so many high-end dining establishments in Orlando, it’s incredibly easy to be at a loss for choices when it comes to knowing where to go. This is especially true along Sand Lake Road’s renowned stretch of upscale restaurants lovingly referred to as “Restaurant Row.” From incredible steakhouses to seafood eateries, patrons are guaranteed to find the city’s finest fare at any one of the top-rated restaurants they pop into. However, for the visitors and locals who are craving exceptional Italian cuisine, there’s only one restaurant they need to worry about making reservations for. Since its inception in 1984, the family-owned and operated Christini’s Ristorante Italiano has boasted an upscale dining experience of award-winning, mouth-watering Italian dishes. This year, Christini’s is celebrating the extraordinary milestone of 35 years in business. A feat that wouldn’t have been possible without their unwavering commitment and dedication to serving up the best of the best in authentic Italian fare. This summer, the momentous anniversary was accompanied with the hiring of new Executive Chef Jason Gonsalves. Working in tandem

with famed restaurateur and Christini’s founder Chris Christini, Chef Gonsalves presents a fresh, seasonal menu blending the tastes of high-quality Mediterranean cuisine with the traditional, upscale gastronomic experience for which Christini’s has earned accolades and celebrity patronage since its inception. Chef Gonsalves brings a penchant for fresh ingredients and carefully crafted cuisine to the Christini’s table. I was absolutely delighted to have the pleasure of meeting both Chef Gonsalves and Chris Christini in person while tasting a variety of classic Christini’s favorites and some of the new menu additions. Alongside signature favorites like the Christini’s Veal Chop and the Chilean Sea Bass served over Shrimp Risotto, the new menu also features seasonally-inspired dishes from Prince Edward Island Mussels and Crab Salad topped with Mango to Smoked Salmon accented with Nova Scotian Caviar and a classic Grand Marnier Soufflé for dessert. My entire dining experience at Christini’s was nothing short of a delight as outstanding service, hand-crafted cocktails, exquisite appetizers and delectable menu options

all came together in spectacular fashion throughout the evening. Learning about the restaurant’s history and Mr. Christini’s vision for the future from the legendary icon himself was absolutely inspiring and the soothing tunes of a strolling accordion player provided the perfect ambience to partake in the elegant evening. The night capped off with Christini’s timeless tradition of handing out a stunning long-stemmed red rose to every female patron... a simple reminder of an exquisite experience that I took home and proudly displayed in my favorite vase. It was a beautiful night filled with rich, authentic Italian cuisine that continues to put Christini’s name up there with the best Italian restaurants in Dr. Phillips, Orlando, and beyond. How many of you were sure to soak up every last drop of summer over the past couple months? From celebrating our nation’s independence to sipping wine and enjoying live music entertainment, there was so much to do in and around The City Beautiful in both July and August. Here are all the highlights, just in case you missed it! Each Saturday afternoon during the month of July, Lakeridge Winery held its famous Music Series, featuring live music on the outdoor stage, and inside the winery at their upstairs Wine & Cheese Bar. The musicians selected were all fantastic performers, hand-picked from the wealth of talent located throughout Central Florida. Lakeridge wine, beer, soft drinks and a variety of food were available for purchase throughout the festivities, along with complimentary Winery tours and tasting. When the sun goes down, the park comes alive! Electric Ocean at SeaWorld Orlando transformed the theme park into an immersive undersea world that glows, entertains and excites. Families enjoyed a unique dance party at Club Sea Glow, featuring puppeteers, special acts and interactive entertainers. Special food and drink offerings enticed guests to snack the night away under the stars. The evenings ended with a fireworks finale that included synchronized water effects, breathtaking pyrotechnic displays and a laser show. The exciting spectacle was included with theme park admission throughout the months of July and August.

MISSED IT By Riesa Pascal

Orlando kicked off their 4th of July celebrations with a bang—or rather, a BOOM! On July 3rd, the city of Altamonte Springs and XL 106.7 partnered up to host Red Hot & Boom—the ultimate summertime celebration. With electric sounds, dazzling skies and plenty of patriotism, Red Hot & Boom brought that feelgood, summer vibe to thousands of attendees. Presented by Qdoba and Todd Miner Law, Red Hot & Boom was an experience like no other. Patrons were invited to shake it up, let loose and get in that summer state-of-mind with performances from the hottest artists, a jawdropping fireworks show and memories that are sure to last a lifetime. Red, White, and Brew was a patriotic block party for the beer enthusiasts of Orlando! On July 3rd, Downtown Orlando was a sea of patriotism as guests enjoyed free live music, great food and fun games on Wall Street plaza. On July 4th, the festivities jumped up a notch with the band Lighter Exchange performing live on the plaza while the Samuel Adams Beer Garden offered unlimited Sam Adams for only $10. In addition, the finalists from One Eyed Jack’s Thursday karaoke sessions competed in Korndogg’s Karaoke Competition Finals just before a spectacular fireworks show.

On July 20th, Orlando Pub Crawl and Orlando Sport and Social Club were proud to present the highly anticipated return of the 14th Annual Crazy 80’s Pub Crawl. The ultimate Pub Crawl completely took over Downtown Orlando with the eye-popping colors and unbeatable music of the 80s! Once participants checked in, they were free to move between all of the starting locations while enjoying great drink specials and jamming out to the best and craziest decade ever! Venues included everywhere from The Lodge, Lizzy’s and Ibar to The Beacham, Chillers, and Wall St Plaza for the 80’s after party. The great fairy migration happened on August 23rd at beautiful Leu Gardens during their three-month-long Fairy Doors exhibit! The Leu Gardens Fairy Festival celebration included a night-hike through their 50-acre gardens with fairy landing stations, crafts, a scavenger hunt for the fairy doors scattered throughout the gardens, and an opportunity for each child to make their own fairy garden. The whimsical exhibit featured 20 new, one-of-a-kind fairy doors which inspired an imaginative world of mythical forests and secret gardens in the minds of children and adults alike. All parents had to do was find these beautiful doors and let their child’s creativity do the rest. August 29th marked the official kickoff of the 2019 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Foodies can now treat themselves to chef demonstrations, hands-on workshops, special events like “Party for the Senses,” and more. There’s also an entire menu of family fun, including Remy’s Ratatouille-inspired scavenger hunt, a play area, nightly dance parties, and select dishes and demonstrations designed especially for kids. Last but not least, the “Eat to the Beat” concert series is showcasing a wide range of musical acts, including newcomers such as Sawyer Brown, Lauren Daigle, Boyce Avenue and Kris Allen, plus returning favorites like Plain White T’s, Sugar Ray, Hanson, Sheila E. and Boyz II Men. Epcot’s renowned celebration is better than ever this year with all-new events and it’s running for a recordshattering 87 days! From Marilyn Monroe to Michael Jackson, over 100 of the world’s best professional celebrity impersonators, lookalikes and tribute artists flew, drove and cruised into Orlando to have an unforgettable time at the 17th Annual Sunburst Convention & Showcase of Celebrity Impersonators. From August 29th31st, professional impersonators were joined by numerous talent buyers, talent agents, producers and meeting planners from all over the country who were invited to watch the imitators perform live and make a lasting impression. The festivities featured performance showcases, themed parties, an awards banquet, and tons of photo opportunities with the “almost famous” stars.

BEARDIE BUDDIES Who wouldn’t want a pet dragon? B Y A LY S S A A S A R O

They will show off by waving their arms, bobbing their heads and moving their “beards”.

Bearded Dragons are one of the most

commonly sought after lizards, but the question still stands: do they make good pets? Many admire them for their name and appearance alone. In the age of Game of Thrones and Harry Potter, there are few people who wouldn’t find the prospect of an animal even remotely dragonlike to be fascinating. However, its name does not come from its fire-breathing talents, which unfortunately do not exist. Rather, it is a product of the spikes, or spines, that go down a line on their necks. Native to Australia, the “beardies” have been bred in a series of beautiful colors. Many of these so-called-looks remain within the realm of sandy or sunset colors with reds, yellows and oranges. They can grow up to 24 inches and can live for up to a decade, which means that they mark a serious commitment. However, unlike cats and dogs, they are low maintenance. Sociable and naturally tame, these pets have been domesticated, unlike their wild counterparts in

Australia who become aggressive if provoked. These behaviors are rare in the United States animals to the point where it is encouraged that they explore their owners home on a weekly basis and can even be leashed and taken on walks. Special attention is needed only in the equipment that must be bought upon purchase. A large gallon tank is needed to suit their eventual growth. For younger lizards, sand substitutes such as papers are encouraged. However, when they are older, play sand is best to imitate their natural environment. An additional bonus is that sand is similar enough to cat litter that it makes cleaning a lot easier. Logs and branches are also encouraged for sunbathing, climbing and hiding. Finally, UVA and UVB radiation exposure is incredibly important for these lizards, and heating lamps are sold specifically for reptiles to fulfill this need. The tricky part is making sure that the tank is not in a position where it can overheat.

Sun exposure is important, but too much can cause damage. Therefore, it’s best to take them out of the tank when wanting to put them outdoors. This may seem to contradict my previous notion of the pets being lowmaintenance. But in comparison to the strenuous daily efforts you have to put into more traditional pets, buying these amenities only upon purchase is considered way less expensive than continuous upkeep. A common misconception about reptiles is that they lack the personality of other pets. This could not be further from the truth, as bearded dragons have certain behaviors that are deemed entertaining and fun. They will show off by waving their arms, bobbing their heads and moving their “beards”. Considered “happy”, they can interact with others and are very calming, which make them good companions and even better pets.

IS SOMETIMES THE NEW 20, BUT MOSTLY, IT’S STILL 40

B Y D AW N H A R R I S S H E R L I N G , M . D . , F. A . C . P.

In the past week you have probably come

across an article about a Hollywood star having kids in her 40s. You may have a friend who headed back to school and changed careers in their 40s, or at the very least, know of a friend of a friend. In the era of Botox and Viagra, you can look and perform like a 20-year old well into your 30s, 40s, and beyond. It is getting hard to tell who’s 40 anymore. However, it is often said that you are the age that you feel you are. In that vein, I have compiled a helpful list to determine your “real” age: If you wake up with back pain for no reason… you might be 40. If you develop sudden knee pain while doing nothing more strenuous than climbing the stairs…you might be 40. If you eat pretty healthfully, exercise occasionally, and still gain 2-5 pounds a year… you might be 40. If you start finding hairs in places you didn’t know hair usually grew…you might be 40. If you are wide awake at 2 a.m. after having an extra glass of wine at dinner…you might be 40.

26

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

I’ll stop here, but this list could be a lot longer. The truth is, the body ages. There are things like smoking, heavy drinking, drug use, leading a sedentary life, and being obese that age the blood vessels, brain, lungs, and joints faster, but we all age. I am prone to remind people that this is better than the alternative, but as a patient once retorted, I can’t really say that for sure.

Mostly, and most challenging, we need to fight weight gain. Metabolism starts to really slow down in our 40s and continues to slow as we get older. That means we need to do more physical activity and eat less than we did in our 20s just to maintain the same weight. (Please don’t send me hate mail—I don’t make the rules, just trying to live with them).

Now in my 40s, I can safely say that I expected these symptoms to appear later. Maybe in my 50s or 60s? I’m not sure when, but certainly, not in my 40s—in my prime! The truth is, I find myself saying the same words I heard from patients for many years, “Why is _____ happening? I’m not doing anything different!”

There are magic creams for wrinkles, my hair colorist is a genius, and Spanx is one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century. I think I look younger than my 42 years. But if I miss a week of yoga or have an extra glass of wine or two, my aches and insomnia will be there to remind me to get back on track. 40 can be the new 20, but, sadly, only sometimes.

And therein lies the problem. It turns out that when you are 40 (or older), when you have reached the point in life where you have finally become comfortable with who you are, you will have to change if you want things to stay the same (or as close to the same as possible). That means doing a lot more core work if you want to stave off back pain and keeping the muscles toned. You need to get strong and stay flexible. Yoga works for many people, but there are lots of exercise programs out there that target strength and flexibility as well.

DR. JENNIFER SHARP THIELHELM Orlando Health Physician Associates Dr. Jennifer Sharp Thielhelm is honored to receive this award and gives all the credit to God for His many blessings. Dr. Thielhelm has had the privilege of practicing in Central Florida for the last twenty-six years. She is a board certified Pediatrician and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics practicing with Orlando Health Physician Associates in Maitland with Dr. Andy Summer and her nurse practitioner, Jacey Dykstra. She tells everyone that she has an amazing, caring and talented team of office staff, partners, nurses and specialists, as well as a supportive family. She is also grateful for the trust of her patients and their families. Dr. Thielhelm is a home-grown Central Floridian who has lived in this area since she was 10 months old. The eldest of four daughters, she was raised by her parents (a Judge and an Attorney) to work hard to achieve your goals. Her family also taught her the importance of giving back to others. Dr. Thielhelm received her Bachelor of Science from Duke University and then attended Medical School at The University of Florida. She fell in love with Pediatrics during her third year medical school rotations because of the children and the kindness of the Pediatricians she encountered. She completed her Pediatric Residency at Arnold Palmer Hospital, serving as CoChief Resident during her third year.

She and her “team” are dedicated to caring for children from newborns to young adults in a thorough and compassionate manner. “We try to treat all patients and their families as if they were part of our family.” Dr. Thielhelm also enjoys teaching. She is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor for the FSU School of Medicine and Community Faculty for the APH Pediatric Residency Program. She feels that teaching “keeps you on your toes” and that you can learn a lot from each student. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family and helping in her community. She and her husband Rob are proud parents of two children who are pursuing careers in medicine. She serves as a board member of a family foundation called The Clive Foundation, which gives grants to numerous charitable organizations throughout Central Florida and across the country. The Clive Foundation enables her to help many “at risk” children in our community. She recently joined the board of The Gift of Swimming which helps to provide free swimming lessons to children. She is also an Elder in her Church. Looking towards the future, Dr. Thielhelm is excited to continue to welcome new patients to the practice. She considers referrals from peers, current families, and former patients who are now parents as the biggest compliment.

MINIMAL & BOUJIE A season of distinct contradiction The runways have presented two ends of the trend spectrum for this season: classic minimalism and dressing up. The wide range brings a little something for everyone. Dress to Impress Displaying bold colors and eye-catching materials, designers catered to the woman who loves to dress up. As we enter the fall season we expect to break out dark, dull colors, but this year designers have taken on the full rainbow color spectrum while nodding to couture with feminine silhouettes. Brands like Moschino and Altuzarra surfaced head-to-toe dipped-in-gold outfits. Versace even resurfaced its silk dress updated with neon. Keeping it light, Valentino took a turn on feathers by adding a wispy trim to their dresses. We saw an abundance of feathered celebrity looks in May for the Met Gala. Feathers can create a delicate look. For warmer breezy days, feathered

pieces let you rock a fun texture while not weighing you down. Tone it Down On the other side of the spectrum, classic minimalism emerged through asymmetry, prep school uniforms, and suit styling. Sweater vests, playful pleats, polos, and three-piece sets were shown off on the runways, making us take notes on tradition. Putting a little prep into your step this season is a great way to layer up in style. Asymmetrical necklines bring a put-together look through effortlessness. A one-shoulder top or jumpsuit is the easiest way to keep it simple while keeping the minimalist vibe. Professional attire has been trying to be perfected for a while. This season’s runway has set the stage for cinched, feminine waists. It’s all about the belt. Adding a tasteful gold chain belt to cinch in a plain suit is the perfect way to try out this trend!

Gucci hair clip Hair clips and accessories continue to enrich collections in unexpected ways. Styled with several of the runway looks, the hair clip is decorated with the Gucci logo in sparkling rhinestones. $400 / Available at Gucci.com

WEARING WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY? As summer comes to an end, we are faced with the notorious fashion rule, “don’t wear white after Labor Day.” If you ask us, it sounds more like a challenge than anything. The story goes back to the late 19th century. This style restriction was a way to separate the old money elitists from the people with new money. White was considered vacation attire for the people with money. When reentering the city as life was starting back again, usually after Labor Day, a new wardrobe seemed essential. Regardless of the arbitrary endpoint to summer fashion, we are over it. The only concern for wearing white should be spilling your coffee on it. Rules are meant to be broken, especially in the daring world of fashion.

RESTORE YOUR SUMMER SKIN

How to save your skin after a summer of neglect There’s nothing like a summer of sun, sand, and saltwater, but have you thought about your skin lately? As we are leaving beach days behind and entering a dryer season, we have skin to rejuvenate and upkeep. Here are some tips on how to simultaneously recover from a sunkissed summer and take on autumn dryness. The first step of your road to recovery is having a stable cleansing routine. The products and procedure you use to invest into your skin should be gentle and mild on your skin. Starting harsh treatments can potentially have long-term consequences. To treat sun-damaged skin, try using a vitamin C infused cleanser. Vitamin C helps with antioxidant protection and improves skin firmness. If your skin seems flaky, the sun most likely robbed your skin of its moisture. A good way to help bring moisture back is to exfoliate the dead skin away, and then using a hydrating serum. Serums contain a higher dosage of ingredients and should be used in moderation. A hydrating serum is good for damaged skin and also helps with anti-aging! Investing in a good moisturizer could be the answer to upkeeping your healthy skin through

these dry months. This skin routine step is the most critical. Even if your skin is oily, moisture is still key. Moisturizing can help reduce the chances of skin problems and helps soothe acne. You should moisturize twice a day. Although products are good to use, you should also take into consideration what you do in your daily life. For example, taking hot showers may feel amazing, however, high water temperatures steal the protective oils from your skin and cause acne to worsen. Even with washing your face in your skin-care routine, you should use cold or even warm water. Hydration seems like the oldest trick in the book, but it never fails us. The easiest way to keep your skin healthy is to hydrate, and the best way to do it is naturally. If you find it difficult to drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day, there are other ways to accomplish this. Eat your water. Yes, eating water-rich foods is a great way to stay hydrated, and ultimately, your food intake shows on your skin. More than a dozen fruits and vegetables contain water content of at least 90%. Cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, celery, and carrots are just a few foods that help you treat your skin!

GROOMING

House 99 Softer Touch Beard Oil

HOT IRON FOR BEARDS By Alyssa Asaro

Traditionally, beards were grown for warmth and protection. They were much more of a survival technique than a fashion statement. Today, they are grown as a form of expression, and with expression comes style. Style is not limited to the clothes you wear. Rather, it is how you present yourself to the world. Beard fashion came to light with the introduction of beard ornaments and glitter. These opened the doors for new accessories and aesthetics. The latest trend has been welcomed as straightening. This may seem like a step back towards tradition, especially compared to the boldness and vibrancy of the previous trends. However, in a world where beard competition-worthy looks are achieved by curling and twisting the hairs in unexpected ways, straightening is uncharted territory. Straightening is accomplished through the same means as with the hair on one’s head, but on a smaller scale. Mini flat irons and beard straightening combs have been introduced on the market as a means to tame unruly beards. The look is more refined and clean cut. Having a long beard has been likened to being wise, as evidenced by popular fictional characters

Dumbledore and Gandalf. It can also be religious as it’s been linked to Judaism and Islam, among others. It is also synonymous to maleness with specific attention to cleanliness. The association with an ungroomed beard is that the person adorning it is unorganized and nonchalant. The leap towards treating beards with as much care as the hair on one’s head is very telling of the times where appearance equates to personality. Looks send a message, and straightening a previously curled beard better frames the face and draws attention away from the hair and towards the rest of their look. The key is organization. Any look that demonstrates that the person thought about it before leaving the house is a look worth taking into consideration for personal reasons or for that of an interview or making a good first impression. However, personal comfort in any context should continuously be someone’s top priority when confronted with new styles.

Beard hair, as compared to head hair, is thicker and more coarse. House 99 Softer Touch Beard Oil is by David Beckham. The product is advertised as containing spirulina and quinoa. With natural ingredients, the oil is paraben and sulfate free and is infused with shea oil for additional softness. $27 / Available at house99beckham-usa.com

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

BALVIN A R C O I R I S TO U R By Courtney Caggiano

Fresh off of the Lollapalooza stage, Colombian singer J Balvin is hitting the road to bring his iconic reggaeton sound to Orlando’s Amway Center on September 12 with his Arcoiris Tour. A first-time performer at Chicago’s Lollapalooza, J Balvin made the music festival’s history as the first Latino headliner in Lollapalooza’s long 28 years. Sporting neon-green hair and his quintessentially eclectic wardrobe, Balvin lit up the coveted stage with a vivacious energy that has made him one of Latin music’s most iconic acts of 2019. After his Lollapalooza set, Balvin tweeted in Spanish, “After 28 years of @lollapalooza for the first time a Latin artist is the headliner of the night.” He then dedicated his performance to “those who know that in life everything is cause and effect, and that we deserve to be here.” Breaking records while serenading global audiences was most likely nothing more than a dream to a young Balvin, who grew up in Medellín, Colombia. However, raised on heavy rock bands such as Metallica and Nirvanna, combined with his passion for Latin and reggae music, Balvin began to create a unique, grunge-meets-

pop aesthetic in both his fashion sense and musical taste that would soon transform the talented singer into an unforgettable reggaeton star. In 2016, Balvin found his breakthrough with his single, “6 AM,” which reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, then returned the following year with the hit, “Mi Gente,” which topped the Global Top 50 on Spotify, later garnering one billion views on YouTube. Though a master of reggaeton, Balvin has kept diversity of genre at the heart of his artistry. With the singer’s daring color palette and personal style, experimentation with a conglomeration of various sounds only seems fitting for Balvin, who has dived into electronica, house music, trap, and R&B. Not only does Balvin enjoy mixing together different musical trends, he also has a passion for combining languages. He has recorded with several English-speaking artists, while continuing to sing almost exclusively in Spanish, hoping to encourage worldwide audiences to fall in love with his native language. Balvin has added his signature Latin brilliance to a variety of

collaborations, including “Machika” which featured Jeon and Anitta, and his groundbreaking hit with Cardi B and Bad Bunny, “I Like It,” which landed Balvin a US Billboard Hot 100 numberone single. The Colombian singer’s most notable partnership has been his work alongside Bad Bunny, as the two artists are singlehandedly returning reggaeton to a state of popularity in America. The duo first connected in 2017 with their track, “Si Tu Novio Te Deja Sola,” and Balvin and Bunny are once again showcasing their unbeatable combination with the release of their surprise album, “Oasis.” This eight-track collab is sure to be one of the favorite Latin records of the year. Balvin’s current tour, appropriately named Arcoiris, meaning “rainbow,” will certainly be as bold and chromatic as the artist himself. With a historical Lollapalooza performance, Balvin has given fans a glimpse of what his Arcoiris Tour will showcase, including colorful backdrops, stunning visual production, and vibrant, danceable hits. For reggaeton lovers or simply lovers of life, Balvin’s eccentric and energetic Arcoiris Tour will definitely be a night to remember.

CELEBS YOU FORGOT WERE ENGAGED COUPLES WHO WERE ONCE ENGAGED, BUT NEVER MADE IT DOWN THE AISLE By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

Alright, let’s face it. Celebrities don’t have the most stellar reputation when it comes to maintaining relationships. In fact, they are pretty much notorious for short flings and fast rings. Some celebrity engagements come and go so fast that the ex-couple has become all but a distant memory by the time we’re hearing about their next Hollywood romance. Here are just a few of these celebrity couples who you forgot were once engaged.

As a declaration of his love for the actress, Depp famously got a “Winona Forever” tattoo (which he later changed to “Wino Forever” after the couple split in June 1993).

Cameron Diaz & Jared Leto The strikingly beautiful Cameron Diaz began dating the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman in 1999. The two were engaged in 2000, but called off the engagement three years later. Today Diaz is happily married to lead guitarist and backing vocalist for Good Charlotte, Benji Madden. Leto has never married and remains one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors. Julia Roberts & Dylan McDermott/Kiefer Sutherland Dubbed “America’s sweetheart,” Roberts was once engaged to her Steel Magnolias co-star Dylan McDermott, but reportedly called off the relationship to date her Flatliners co-star Kiefer Sutherland. Roberts and Sutherland almost made it down the aisle in June 1991 after a year of dating, but the actress called it off just days before the ceremony was set to take place. Roberts is currently married to her second husband Daniel Moder and Sutherland is in a relationship with actress Ciny Vela. Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck Lovingly referred to as the original “Bennifer,” Lopez and Affleck were engaged after meeting on the set of Gigli in 2002. The lovebirds called their nuptials off

before their wedding in early 2004 though Lopez has referred to their time together as “a genuine love.” In 2018, Affleck went through a public divorce with Jennifer Garner while Lopez is now engaged to baseball shortstop Alex Rodriguez. Gwyneth Paltrow & Brad Pitt ‘90s heartthrob Brad Pitt met Gwyneth Paltrow when they co-starred together in the 1995 film Se7en. Pitt proposed to Paltrow shortly afterwards, but the two called in off in 1997. Paltrow spoke of her relationship during an interview with Howard Stern saying, “I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old… I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me. I didn’t know what I was doing.” Though Paltrow and Pitt are both divorcees, Paltrow is now remarried to TV writer Brad Falchuk. Johnny Depp & Jennifer Grey/Winona Ryder Johnny Depp and Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey were engaged in 1989 only to split up one year later. Right around this time Depp met Winona Ryder at a film premiere. The couple went on to costar in Edward Scissorhands and were engaged five months later. As a declaration of his love for the actress, Depp famously got a “Winona Forever” tattoo (which he later changed to “Wino Forever” after the couple split in June 1993). Grey and Ryder are both happily married today, while Depp has divorced twice and is currently single. Lenny Kravitz & Adriana Lima/Nicole Kidman Musician Lenny Kravitz has had his fair share of celebrity ex-fiances! In 2001, Kravitz began dating Victoria’s Secret angel Adriana Lima. The lovebirds were engaged in the spring of 2002, before calling things off in 2003. It didn’t take long before Kravitz was popping the question again as he and Nicole Kidman began dating in 2003 after her 2001 divorce from Tom Cruise. They were engaged that same year, but eventually called things off though they remain friends to this day. Kidman even went on to co-star with Kravitz’s daughter Zoe in Big Little Lies.

DESIGN

FLORA & FAUNA Fall Centerpieces Floral arrangements and decoration centerpieces lie within the heart of the fall holiday spirit. Traditional fall centerpieces composed of orange pumpkins, burlap and hay rolls are being cast aside for a modern approach on fall holidays. Instead of pumpkins, designers are introducing orange-colored flowers such as California Poppy, Chrysanthemum, and Marigold set within glass vases accompanied with cinnamon sticks that embrace the smells associated with fall months. For holidays such as Halloween, the arrangement of rows of candles can aid in an eerie effect, which can excite and spook a household.

SCANDINAVIAN MOD

Elaborate your fall interior by reducing your decor Scandinavian architecture and interior design is a booming trend when considering new homes being built in America. This style is reminiscent of the stark atmosphere and vast landscape of Northern European countries who embrace raw materials such as concrete, metal, and wood in combination with colors found in fall/winter consumed countries. For a homeowner who is simplistic with style, Concrete and metal are the perfect go-to for indoor and outdoor furnished accessories. For the homeowner who loves a pattern, marble and granite items are the perfect combination of a natural texture found naturally

AU NATURAL

The lighting you didn’t know you needed Lighting is a fundamental aspect of any home in any location. The difference between natural and man-made light changes the heat and sensations felt within a home. The perfect natural lighting implement for the fall months resides within the incorporation of a skylight. Skylights are windows located within the ceiling of a house or room that allows a vantage point of trees and the starry night sky which lasts longer during the fall months. While this lighting method is not easy to install the outcome will leave you breathless as the ability to become one with nature ebbs and flows with the surrounding changing seasons.

within the veins of the stone, while maintaining the neutral color scheme associated with Scandinavian homes. As interior style moves away from the clutter of bohemian fall decor, the infiltration of Mod within Scandinavian design allows for a subtle pop of color in order to fully embrace the spirit of upcoming cooler months. The association of a glass vase holding laurel or fig leaves juxtaposed to a colorful chair and a moss wall frame is a modern approach on the succulents and fall decoration done by homeowners in previous years.

JOHN ELLIOTT LEIGHTON Board Certified Trial Lawyer When lawyers around Florida have complex and serious personal injury cases, they call John Leighton. That’s because in 34 years as a trial lawyer Leighton is sought out to handle many high profile and catastrophic injury cases. He’s been called aggressive, thorough, creative, accomplished and ethical. But if asked what term is most important to him, he would say “prepared,” because all of Leighton’s cases require painstaking preparation. Unlike most personal injury lawyers, Leighton doesn’t seek out cases -- they seek him out. That’s because Leighton is referred the serious, complex and catastrophic cases from around the state and elsewhere in the country. He is seen as the go-to trial lawyer for major personal injury and death cases like medical malpractice, catastrophic trucking and car crash, resort/theme park, violent crime, sexual abuse and negligent security cases, brain injury and defective product cases. After obtaining a substantial settlement for the family of a young woman, Mr. Leighton fought for passage of the first parasailing safety law in the United States after his client’s daughter was killed while parasailing off Florida’s coast. It took seven years but the regulations finally passed in 2014. Known for his success in medical malpractice cases, Leighton’s track record in obtaining recoveries in Central Florida is remarkable. He won a record-setting $24.1 million verdict for a child who suffered a terrible medical mistake in Seminole County, followed by settlements of $9 million for a woman who was given improper anesthesia in the hospital

and $3 million for the Central Florida family whose mom bled to death from a doctor’s error. He followed that with a $24.3 million verdict for the family of an Orlando police officer who was killed at an ATM, an $8 million award for the parents of a teenager killed on the turnpike, and a $7.4 million verdict in Osceola County for a trucking crash. Last year he convinced a jury to award $49 million to a girl who had been raped by a teacher inside the school. These are examples of why Leighton has developed a national reputation and has been hired to handle cases in nearly a dozen states. While many of his cases garner media attention, most of the time Leighton’s clients are ordinary people who have suffered serious loss. Like the Orlando family of a teen who was killed by a drunk boater. That family hired Leighton, who obtained a $1.35 million recovery and saw the boater sent to prison for 6 years. And like the $3.5 million recovery he won for an Orlando motorcyclist who suffered a brain injury where the driver who hit him only had $10,000 in insurance. A board certified trial lawyer, Leighton is considered one of the foremost experts in negligent security and child sex abuse litigation. He authored the 2-volume textbook, Litigating Premises Security Cases, lectures around the world, and serves as Chairman of the Inadequate Security Litigation Group of the American Trial Lawyers. He is the President-elect of the National Crime Victim Bar Association and provides civil justice training to victim advocates and law enforcement throughout Florida.

121 S. Orange Ave., Ste. 1270, Orlando, FL 32801 | 888-395-0001 P: 407-384-8004 | www.Leightonlaw.com

Leighton is recognized by his peers as being at the very top of this his field. He has been chosen as one of the Top 100 by Florida SuperLawyers, Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite,” and selected 14 consecutive years for The Best Lawyers in America for Plaintiff ’s personal injury, medical malpractice and product liability litigation. This year he was elected to membership in the prestigious American Law Institute, which creates the rules for state and federal courts. Mr. Leighton’s passion is helping people who have had the worst thing happen to them. For him, the courts are the way to level the playing field for the little guy.

In 1997, she left the court to be a stay-athome mom, but her love of appellate law kept calling her. What began in a 4 by 8-foot space behind a curtain in her family room grew into The Carlyle Appellate Law Firm, a seven-lawyer firm with multiple offices. During her 21-year tenure at the firm, she built a resume that is expressive of her passion for appellate law and the clients she represents. Carlyle has worked hard to earn numerous legal accolades. FAIELLA & GULDEN, P.A.

Trial Lawyers Enforcing the Medical Standard of Care If you spend enough time around the lawyers of Faiella & Gulden, you are bound to hear a recurring question from their opponents: “don’t you have any other cases to work on?” In fact, the three-lawyer family firm, which predominately handles medical malpractice cases, intentionally limits their caseload, a strategy that not only ensures that each matter receives the attention it deserves, but also enables each lawyer to be deeply involved in every case that they bring. However, this familiar inquiry is as much a product of the attorneys’ work ethic as anything else. Indeed, all three lawyers approach their cases with an intensity that borders on obsessiveness, pursuing their clients’ causes with a relentless vigor that has become a sort of calling card for the firm. The driving force behind this tenacity is a belief that the weakest among us deserve the most fearless fighters, a principle that has guided this legal family through three generations of practice. The firm’s founding partner, Elizabeth Hawthorne Faiella, herself the daughter of a trial attorney-turned-municipal judge, Rachel Johnson, has enjoyed a storied career that has resulted in as many verdicts for victims of negligence as it has professional accolades. In 2008, she landed a spot in the prestigious Inner

Circle of Advocates, a group that is comprised of the top 100 plaintiff ’s lawyers in the country. Elizabeth’s son, Peter J. Gulden, III, nicknamed “Tres,” joined his mother’s firm in 2004. Peter swiftly earned his seat at the table, and his litigation success over the past fifteen years is evidenced by his membership in such elite attorney groups as the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum and National Trial Lawyers Top 25 in Medical Malpractice in Florida. Peter is also AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell. Rebecca E. Gulden, Peter’s wife, distinguished herself early on by earning ten book awards (for highest grade in the course) during her time as a law student at the University of Florida— more than any other student in her graduating class. Rebecca joined the firm in 2015 and has already proven herself to be a rising star in the arena of medical negligence litigation, helping F&G to achieve multiple seven figure verdicts and settlements during her tenure there. Although they thrive on the challenge of representing patients, Elizabeth, Peter, and Rebecca agree that the gratitude of their clients is the most meaningful reward of their labor.

MATTHEWS BARK

Criminal Defense Attorney People come to see me on what is usually the hardest day of their life. Maybe they made a bad decision, had an emotional falling out with a loved one that resulted in violence, or had to act in self-defense. Perhaps they’re battling mental illness, trauma and/ or addiction. If you find yourself in a similar situation, it truly is a privilege to stand by your side and advocate on your behalf to address your immediate needs and work on long-term solutions. Most people do not realize what criminal defense attorneys actually do. We really do want our clients to be found not guilty. In order to accomplish this, we thoroughly investigate, ensure that evidence favorable to you is disclosed, confront your accuser, protect you from being overcharged, and explain your circumstances to prevent misunderstandings or prejudices. I also assist clients in finding other resources to ensure that this is not a repeat issue.

Too often criminal charges are made in the heat of the moment and are often based on assumptions, presumptions and even false information. Defendants have the right to be heard. I will not allow a prosecution to be based on gossip, hearsay or on a one-sided story. It is essential to ensure a person is not treated cruelly or unusually just because they are the accused.

Litigating before judges and juries is the greatest protection that I know to preserve our freedoms and secure ourselves against abuses of power. To protect these values and in an effort to perfect my craft, I created the first mediation program for probate in Baltimore City, I interned for the Maryland Legislature, and have worked under a trial judge and appellate court judge, and am a former prosecutor. I graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2006, then joined my family here in Central Florida who’ve been practicing law since 1977. I became a member of the Florida Bar in 2007, was awarded prosecutor of the year from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and chaired the Orange County Bar Association Criminal Law Section. As a former prosecutor, I’ve trained law enforcement on how to effectively testify, and can anticipate all aspects of a case that may be built against you. Many of my former clients have expressed their satisfaction on Google and AVVO. While I hope you or your loved ones never need my services I look forward to serving you if the need arises.

J. CLANCEY BOUNDS

“Doing the Right Thing for the Right Reason” Every company and every professional practice needs a foundation and an ethos. While all attorneys strive to be ethical and competent, the practice of trial law on behalf of victims, with major injuries up to and including the death of a loved one, requires more than simple ethical conduct and legal competence. Representation of this unique client base requires empathy, compassion, and appreciation of what that individual or family is going through. Bounds Law Group, with aforethought for its mission, established the ethos and culture of “doing the right thing for the right reason”. No case at the firm is solely about money. The focus is not and never will be, about the fee to be earned. The focus is about justice and fairness to the client and, to the opposition. While economics are certainly part of running a business, the conduct of litigation on behalf of persons with severe injuries, which necessarily involves accusing a well-meaning health care provider of wrongdoing, requires a level of professionalism, preparation and understanding, not necessarily required in other areas of practice. To accomplish this, all attorneys at the firm start off as experienced medical malpractice litigators but are hired primarily for their character and ability to have empathy. At BLG, the importance of family and work life balance is stressed for the entire staff. These firm values then translate to a staff-wide appreciation for the families the firm represents. In keeping with the firm ethos, BLG supports multiple local groups, foundations and the arts of Central Florida. BLG does not limit its support to those interests of its principals but rather seeks to be inclusive of its staff ’s interests in the community. As a result, BLG supports interests as diverse as the Foundation for Foster Children, the Orlando Ballet, NAMI and the Jewish Federation. J. Clancey Bounds, Esq. is a graduate from the University of Florida and from Stetson University College of Law. He is a member of the Arizona, California, Florida, Texas and District of Columbia Bars. He is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Florida. He is a member of The Florida Justice Association, where he serves as a Board Member, The American Association for Justice, where he serves as a State Delegate and the Central Florida Trial Lawyers Association. He is an Associate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a Member of the Melvin Belli Society and a Member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Most importantly he is a husband to a wonderful wife, and a proud father of two amazing daughters. Attorney, J. Clancey Bounds is the founder and managing partner of Bounds Law Group, a boutique trial firm that limits its practice to medical negligence litigation on behalf of patients and their families. During his legal career of 26 years, Clancey has practiced law in multiple jurisdictions and in State and Federal Courts. He began his career with a large, Florida, multi-location law firm which specialized in the defense of health care providers. After gaining invaluable experience in the defense of physicians, he changed the focus of his practice when he joined wellknown local trial attorney Mike Maher, to representing patients and their families in medical malpractice suits. During his tenure with The Maher Law Firm, his practice expanded to multiple jurisdictions including Arizona and California where he added the representation of victims of abuse and neglect in skilled nursing facilities to his areas of focus. Since changing the focus of his practice, Mr. Bounds has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for those he has represented in health care related lawsuits including an individual recovery for a single client in excess of $36,000,000.00. 1751 N. JOHN FOSTER

Family Complex Litigation and Collaborative Group Passionate is one of the best words to describe attorney John Foster. As president of Family Complex Litigation and Collaborative Group (FCLC Group), his passion to help each client shows in the level of care and dedication he pours into each case. “We believe that each one of our clients plays an active role in the process, and together we work as a team,” says John. “We are your lawyers from start to finish.” John was born and raised in the Orlando area and has deep roots in his community. With more than 38 years of complex litigation experience, he is positioned to handle divorce and family law cases in the Orlando area and beyond. His practice now focuses exclusively on the resolution of complex divorce and family law cases, whether resolved through settlement, the litigation process and trial, mediation, the collaborative process or the appellate process. John works with matters involving alimony, child support, custody, divorce, paternity, property division, and other marital and family-related issues. Before directing his focus exclusively to family law, John litigated numerous state and federal cases and appeals that put him in direct contact with sophisticated business persons, entrepreneurs, and general or corporate counsel responsible for litigation management. In many divorce and family law cases, the business entities with which a spouse is employed or involved may be added as parties or may become entangled in the discovery process. John’s background and experience place him in a unique position for remaining sensitive to the impact of divorce on the business interests of his clients. John’s accomplishments have earned him recognition and honors on many occasions over the years. He has achieved the highest AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, and he is ranked by Chambers USA. John has been named as one of America’s Best Lawyers,

as Florida Legal Elite for Marital and Family Law by Florida Trend, and has been named a Super Lawyer for eight consecutive years. By invitation, John is a member of the National Advocates “Top 100.” John is actively involved in the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar Association. For his personal health and wellness, John follows his passions for surfing and general fitness, as well as reading. One of his favorite books is “The Surfer’s Journey” by Dr. Don Kennedy. Another topic John is extremely passionate about is recovery from addiction. After a long battle with addiction, his son finally found recovery. However, in 2013, a year and a half into his recovery, his son relapsed and fatally overdosed. John channels his passion for recovery by remaining involved in the recovery world. He is fortunate to sit as vice president of the Board of Directors of Turning Point of Central Florida, Inc., a 501(c)(3) entity that provides outpatient services to persons suffering from substance abuse and to the families impacted by addiction. He is also a founding member of Mind, Body & Soul Recovery Housing, which owns and operates sober-living homes in the Orlando area. “Addiction is a matter of life or death and it doesn’t discriminate,” says John. “While death is the reality of addiction, life is the reality of recovery. Over the years, dinner conversations often revolved around her father’s high-profile trials and Sarah took every opportunity to watch her father in action and learn from him. Sarah excelled in academics and was able to fast-track her way to her dream of becoming an attorney. She completed high school and college early. She graduated from an accelerated two-year J.D. program at Southwestern University School of Law. During law school, she completed an externship with the California Supreme Court as well as an internship at the Los Angeles State Attorney’s Office. After law school, Sarah relocated to Florida in 2007 and was hired by one of the largest law firms in the country where she worked in the General Counsel’s office. However, her desire to litigate persisted. She knew that to be an effective advocate, it was crucial to have an in-depth knowledge of both sides, so she took a position at a large Florida based civil defense firm. During her time at the defense firm, she represented and defended many Fortune 500 companies and major insurance companies in civil litigation. After years of experience defending insurance companies, Sarah’s focus shifted. She became a plaintiff ’s personal injury attorney allowing her career and personal values to align. She spent the next several years working for a personal injury law firm in Lake Mary, Florida representing those that had been injured due to someone else’s neglect. Sarah’s connection to her community and ongoing success motivated her to open Goldman Law, P.A. in March of 2014. Goldman Law, P.A. is a boutique law firm that focuses on the representation of the injured. Sarah is personally familiar with the needs and emotions of the injured, having been an accident victim herself. She takes great pride in the work she does. While Sarah knows that no amount of money will adequately compensate an injured person, she fights hard to make sure her clients get “just” compensation. GEOFFREY HOATSON, CEO & FOUNDER

Family First Firm

Geoff Hoatson is the CEO and Founder of the Family First Firm. The Family First Firm has been experiencing rapid growth over the last few years expanding from a team of just three people to twenty-two (at the time of writing) in three years. They have helped thousands of Central Florida families navigate the overwhelming circumstances that seniors face when aging. Geoff regularly hosts seminars, speaking engagements, and a weekly radio program, “The Smart Money Show”, to educate and counsel seniors (and their families). The focus is how seniors can protect their finances from devastation due to long-term care needs, taxes, and the court system. Specifically, the Family First Firm focuses on Medicaid Planning, Wills & Trusts, Veteran’s Benefits, Guardianship, and Probate. The firm isn’t just helping Florida families though. Local organizations have now begun taking notice of Family First Firm’s stellar work and the firm has been able to expand their services to capture corporate clients including several local hospital systems and nursing home chains. Geoff and the Firm have won just about every industry award for lawyers and their client reviews are just another testament to their outstanding work. However, it isn’t only the law firm keeping Geoff busy. In early 2019, Geoff and his team recognized that there are many professional guardians within our community providing pro bono services for a growing population of low income seniors. Many times these selfless individuals are even spending money out of their own pockets to care for their wards. Geoff wanted to do something to

change that and so he created the Family First Firm Foundation. The foundation is a not-for-profit organization created to provide funds for guardians who serve others pro bono. Now, these guardians can apply to the Foundation to be compensated for their time so they are able to continue providing this invaluable service to our most vulnerable citizens. With guardianship in the news a lot these days, the Foundation and its mission are more important than ever. And that’s not all. Geoff also founded Simply Approvals, LLC which brings the elder law experience and results to the skilled nursing industry. Many people in nursing homes need Medicaid and the facilities try to handle it for them. Unfortunately, Medicaid is too time consuming and involved for the facilities to handle efficiently and that’s where Simply Approvals comes in. Staffed by a team trained at the law firm, Simply Approvals brings a level of experience and expertise unmatched in the industry. This allows the facilities to focus on providing great care to residents and lets Simply Approvals worry about getting them paid for doing it. The demand and response has been so overwhelming that the company has moved to an “application only” interest list so that the quality of services is not compromised. Between the Family First Firm, the Family First Firm Foundation, and Simply Approvals, this dynamic team is poised to make quite an impact in our state for the foreseeable future. MERIDETH NAGEL

Merideth Nagel, P.A.

Merideth Nagel has been an attorney since 1997, finding value in helping clients navigate the often difficult legal roads of life and business, and forging relationships with them based on mutual caring and respect—relationships she hopes will last a lifetime. Merideth Nagel’s passion for law began when she saw firsthand how her uncle, the late Senator Richard Langley, made a tangible difference in people’s lives through his work as a lawyer. “This is what I want to do. I want to really help people”, she thought to herself. After graduating law school, Ms. Nagel began working with Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente. Justice Pariente taught her so much about how to understand the law, “and more importantly, its impact on people.” She taught me that legal work is bigger than the law; it is about how the law can change people’s lives. After gaining experience with big name clients at the international law firm Holland & Knight, Ms. Nagel knew she needed to go back to her roots- a true Central Florida girl who grew up in Clermont. She wanted to work locally and “build up our community”, fighting for her clients’ legal needs while being there for them on a personal level. Merideth founded her law firm in 2005, dedicated to “changing the world one client at a time.” True to this mission, Merideth has dedicated her time to helping her clients face whatever life throws at them, and assembling a staff of lawyers and employees dedicated to making a difference. Merideth and her team focuses their practice on real estate, estate planning, guardianship, probate, family law, business law, foreclosures and bankruptcies. Being a pastor’s wife, rearing three boys and running a thriving law practice keep her very busy. She is also very active in the community, serving in the past and presently on almost every profession and civic board and non-profit in the area. She strives to consider the needs and desires of all members of her community and to show love and grace to everyone, without exception. Photo by Kimberly Jefcoat

JOHNNY A. PINEYRO, ESQ

Florida Injury Law Firm

OSM: To what do you attribute your firm’s success to? JP: The people and process. We have hired great people. When you do not, we find ourselves making excuses to clients. That is not acceptable. We recently parted ways with a lawyer that was not an honest person, and did not reflect the values we espouse. After the change, we found an immediate difference in our culture and clients were coming back. It is amazing the difference it makes when everyone is in sync and working toward a common goal. There is no “I” in team. OSM: What sets your firm apart from other injury law firms? JP: We care about our clients. Our results are more than numbers to parade around on billboards and commercials. We prefer to get great feedback, and repeat business from our clients privately. We value that relationship and prefer to avoid using them as advertisement bait like so many law firms do today. A happy client always generates you more business simply through word of mouth. OSM: I know you’re an aviator. How has that helped what you do? JP: I love flying and try to prepare properly before each flight. This is the same when practicing law. You try to prepare your clients and their cases for the worst case scenario. If you can do this, the results are generally good. In flying and law we are always trying to stay a few steps ahead. OSM: Can you talk about your philanthropic work? JP: I am so proud of the work we do through the Pineyro Education Foundation. We have changed lives locally though scholarships for kids interested in science, math and aviation. It is a way I give back. I have spent time with amazing people and you can usually tell very quickly where someone’s heart is in life. I prefer to give than take. It is what makes me who I am today. I spend many hours

as a Board Member with Mercy Flight (formerly Angel Flight), Veterans Air Command and Challenge Air (served as a Board Member for many years). I have also volunteered many hours over the past few years building homes through Habitat for Humanity in Orlando. It is a special organization that allows me to put my experiences in real estate to good use. My company, Surgent Capital, a Real Estate Private Equity company is focused on large multi-family investments in Florida and Texas. I also give back through my other company, ILUM, by offering free advertising to charities looking to promote kid-friendly fund raising activities. My advertising company has been very successful and has allowed me to work alongside my brother who runs day-to-day operations. I am very proud of this company because we created it from nothing to what is is today. My wife and two kids have seen the work the various organizations do and I think I have set a good example for them to follow and serve. We are focused on giving back as a family. OSM: What do you have coming up in 2020? I see you own a few other businesses. JP: Looking forward to 2020, as we continue to grow our law firm which is up to 3 locations, and focus on making sure our clients are served the way I would want to be if I were injured. I will also increase our real estate investments as opportunities present themselves now that we are near the end of the typical real estate cycle. And I hope to add to the marketing company fleet as I think we can grow that as well. Most important, I want to enjoy everyday with my family. It has been the rock in my life and has kept me focused on being a better person. In the end, my family and faith is what I value the most.

We had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Pineyro and ask him a couple of questions about his firm, personal projects and future goals.

AVITA M. SAMAROO, ESQ

Samaroo Law | A Woman’s Perspective on the Future of the Legal Industry Ciara Taylor, a recent Rollins graduate, had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Personal Injury Attorney Avita Samaroo. While Avita has a unique background and witty personality, it’s her fresh perspective on the future of the legal profession that will undoubtedly garner your attention. As we talk, Avita explains her career trajectory and what a female attorney can bring to the table. CT: Tell me about the journey of starting your firm. AMS: In my career, I have been fortunate enough to work with and learn from some amazing attorneys. But I quickly recognized an industrywide problem and knew I had to do something about this problem. Larger firms tend to focus their attention and resources on “high value” cases. While that may sound like a good business decision, the problem with that model is that the majority of cases are not “high value” – what happens to these people? There is a shift in the industry that you’ve probably noticed. Victims of personal injury are turning to smaller reputable firms that are willing and able to provide the education, communication and personalized attention that they deserve. I opened my own firm to do just that. CT: How do you differentiate yourself in the Personal Injury field? AMS: My goal is to always exceed my client’s expectations. The way I look at it, education is key. If I’m able

to educate my clients on the process and the decisions we have to make, I empower them. I cannot take away their injuries but I can take away some of their stress and help my clients rest assured that I will do my best to tell their story and maximize their recovery. CT: What do you think is the biggest issue for women in your industry? AMS: While women have made exceptional progress, gender discrimination is a battle that we cannot ignore. It affects this industry and so many others by fostering an environment ripe for sexual harassment, gender wagegaps, and so much more. But the biggest industry wide issue is that women do not have equal access to senior positions. Even the most diverse firms are dominated by male decision-makers and this is holding us back. CT: What advice can you offer to women who want a career in your industry? AMS: As a woman, we all wear different hats - whether you are a mother, wife, an artist or a runner, these qualities will make you a better professional. If you can bring all of your skills to the work you do, you will put forth the best version of yourself. In the world that we live in today, women are often penalized for being too “feminine” or for being too “masculine”. Don’t get caught up in trying to walk that tightrope, be authentic and just be yourself!

ANDREW V. SHOWEN

Board Certified Construction Lawyer Hill Rugh Keller & Main Andy graduated from University of Florida law school in the top 10 in 1984 with aspirations for politics. But politics didn’t happen. A position with a distinguished national law firm lured him to Orlando instead. Andy started his career digging through construction project documents for one of the firm’s major clients, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. Also, the firm’s varied client base allowed him to become the go-to junior lawyer in commercial cases, from street-fight noncompete battles between rival garbage companies, to high-stakes land use litigation. He became an all-purpose commercial litigator. As a native Spanish speaker, he smoothed communications with clients and witnesses in an increasingly bilingual Florida. In 1997, with a baby on the way, Andy Showen became in-house counsel for a national home builder, doing land deals. Four years in-house allowed him to acquire new skill sets -- real estate and development law, working day to day with division presidents and land managers. Andy also grappled with picketing homeowners, internal investigations, land use, and lawsuits large and petty. In 2002, Andy joined the legal department of a global insurer as its first construction lawyer in Florida. He was certified by the Florida Bar as a construction law specialist in 2009. “Hardest test I ever took. One guy got up and left at lunch, and never came back.”

Then, while litigating a roof defect case on a Polk County potato warehouse, Chris Hill -- Orlando Style Legal Elite, 2016 -- and Andy Showen met. Chris had the general contractor, Andy had the roofer. Instead of tearing each other’s clients up, they calmly and methodically found common ground against the plaintiff. They hit it off personally. Andy joined Hill Rugh Keller & Main in 2015. That year, Andy and Chris tried a million dollar warehouse fire case to a directed verdict for their client. He’s defended contractors at the firm for four years. Andy also pursues payment and lien claims, and handles contract drafting review and insurance advice for his construction clients. He enjoys working with the cross currents of ideas commercial and insurance law, and helping advise clients at the front end of projects and deals. “Working in house taught me so much. You see how and why the problems start. Little things, like getting a volume discount on a certain type of window, or the stucco crew getting replaced -- you know what little things to ask about that turn out to have big impact.” Yoga and meditation help him keep his focus. “I’ve been accused of using Jedi mind tricks.” Keeping a family tradition going, Andy’s a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, where he captains the color guard in parades.

SHARON LEE STEDMAN

Attorney at Law

Before attending Stetson School of Law in St. Petersburg, Florida, Sharon taught elementary school for nine years. After returning to Gainesville, Florida, her hometown, Sharon found that teachers were not in great demand. At that time, there were many more teachers than available teaching positions. While waiting for a teaching position to open, Sharon began a course program at Sante Fe Community College. The two year program resulted in a degree as a paralegal. It was at Sante Fe Community College that Sharon’s love of researching and writing had its roots. Rather than pursuing a career as a paralegal, Sharon attended and graduated from Stetson Law School but her passion for researching and writing continued. After graduating from law school, she was retained as the Judicial Aide to the Chief Judge of the Fifth District Court of Appeal, James C. Dauksch, Jr. Chief Judge Dauksch had a profound effect on Sharon’s future as an attorney. Judge Dauksch instilled in Sharon a respect for the law as well the importance of ethical conduct in the practice of law. Sharon also learned from him never to make the same mistake twice. Due to her experience as Judicial Aide to Chief Judge Dauksch, the most important aspect of her legal career is her commitment to practice law with the highest degree of ethical conduct. Sharon’s commitment to the ethical practice of law was greatly enhanced

when she worked for Rumberger, Kirk, and Caldwell, P. A., in Orlando. At Rumberger, Kirk, she began an appellate department, which was the first such department in any law firm in Florida. Now, most large law firms have an appellate department thanks, in large part, to Rumberger, Kirk’s vision of the future. Prior to working with Rumberger, Kirk, Sharon was an Assistant Attorney General working in the West Palm Beach Criminal Appeal office. Her work as an Assistant Attorney General resulted in her ability to research and draft briefs in a very short manner due to the workload of each Assistant Attorney General. Normally, the drafts of the legal briefs resulted in the final product that was ultimately filed with the court; there was no time to edit and redraft. Such was an invaluable experience. Due to her work experience, Sharon is proficient in representing clients in both civil and criminal cases. There is one aspect of Sharon’s practice that has resulted in her proudest moments. She has been able to receive the release of eight innocent inmates from incarceration through the Clemency Board in Tallahassee. The granting of petitions for clemency are extremely rare and, therefore, extremely difficult to pursue. But the reward is worth all the time involved and the stress incurred: freedom for the unjustly incarcerated.

The secret to her success is no secret at all. Lorna’s practice focuses on one area and one only: Family law matters, many of which can be extremely complex. To this specialty, Lorna brings a remarkable work ethic that places her client’s goals and well-being at the forefront of everything she does. Lorna is caring and compassionate, but she also fights hard for her clients and understands the importance of professionalism, both inside and outside of the courtroom. Another key to her success: Communication. The process of going through a divorce, litigating child custody matters, time-sharing with children, support enforcement, and contempt cases can be long and involve many hearings. Lorna has found that keeping her clients well informed in the process is key to helping them cope with some of the stress. Lorna maintains an open door when it comes to taking client calls and meeting with her clients, always willing to meet and strategize. Lorna earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rollins College, while also working for a small law firm focused solely on family law. She also has experience in real estate law. After graduating from Florida A&M Law School in 2010, Lorna began working with a law firm dedicated to the practice of criminal and family law. In 2012, Lorna gained national recognition as a prominent member of a defense team who successfully handled a high-profile criminal case, one that made headlines around the world, while handling a full and diverse case load throughout. She was recently honored by being asked to join as a board member of the Central Florida Family Inn of Court and is also a member of the Orange County Bar Association. The motto for the team at Greater Orlando Family Law is: “Keep Moving Forward.” For Lorna, a part owner of the firm, these are not just empty feel-good words on a wall. They’re an action plan that guide all she does. “I strive to assist my clients during their most difficult times,” she says, “to keep them moving forward.”

PAUL URICH “When you have done all you can, we are here to help.” Chapter 7 and 13 Bankruptcy Attorney Paul L. Urich has exclusively practices bankruptcy law from his near downtown office. For over 21 years and over 6,800 cases, Paul L. Urich has helped clients navigate the bankruptcy process. As Bankruptcy encompasses so many areas of the law and the client’s life Mr. Urich prefers to meet with clients for a free consultation in person to go over their entire situation. What may not seem like a major issue can have a major impact on the bankruptcy. By the same token, some client concerns will not have any detrimental effect on the bankruptcy. The key is to take the time and ask the right questions and answer the client’s question so everyone is on the same page. Communication does not stop after the consultation or even the filing. Paul L. Urich responds to the clients phone calls and emails as this way both clients and attorney know what is happening in the client’s bankruptcy case. Once a client always a client, Paul L. Urich routinely has clients from the past call with questions or request items from the bankruptcy court file and those items can be sent to the client or the mortgage underwriter or a collection agency needing information. Bankruptcy is not an easy decision to make. The worst step to undertake is the realization that it is necessary to file

bankruptcy as the client’s budget can no longer support the servicing of their debt. The next uncomfortable task is to actually call and set an appointment and to meet with the attorney. In 21 years, Paul L. Urich has not many people who enjoy going bankrupt, it is a difficult decision, but bankruptcy can offer a fresh start. Mr. Urich will consult with the client to review their entire situation to be sure bankruptcy is the best choice. Part of the bankruptcy process is the Trustee Meeting. Mr. Urich is familiar with all the trustee’s and helps the client to get all the requested documents and works with the client to be sure the petition is accurate and answers the Trustee’s concerns. This is to insure that the bankruptcy goes as smoothly and quickly as possible. A little extra effort prior to filing can save work for the client, the attorney and the Trustee. Each trustee has their own areas of concern. Mr. Urich will go over any concerns or questions that a trustee may have regarding a client’s case. Mr. Urich graduated from St. Cloud State University with a interdepartmental degree with Speech Communication and Business. Mr. Urich received his law degree from St. Thomas University and is licensed in Florida State Courts and the U.S. Middle District of Florida Photo by Kimberly Jefcoat
