14 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, > In today’s world, it seems that almost every product or service is endorsed by a well-known celebrity. Whether displaying a clothing brand, facial product, or car company, we tend to feel more able to relate to an advertisement that features a personality we find familiar or endearing. Celebrities have become public representations of our culture’s ideals, and we are sometimes likely to make a purchase if a celebrity we trust is using a product of interest.

Penfolds Luxury Wine Unveiling at BevFly Wines on I-Drive- Photo by Brion Price

This system of advertising usually works very well, due to the fact that people relate to celebrities, and companies seem to be using this tactic more now than ever before. However, this system can backfire if the personality representing the advertised brand acts in a way that is contradictory to the beliefs of the brand. We have seen this quite recently over the past decade: perhaps you remember Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss, or Tiger Woods. Even more recently, Paula Deen and Michael Phelps have been grouped into this category. The list goes on, and with so many making a name for themselves on this list, is it really worth investing time and money advertising with these celebrities? It seems that advertisers are beginning to run out of other methods of capturing their audience’s attention, so they keep hiring celebrity spokespeople. Although countless companies continue to put their trust in oftenuntrustworthy public figures, a select number create endorsements with trusted and well-known publications, very much like ours. At Style Magazines, we of course have advertisers whom we happily endorse, and we have also successfully presented many doctors and lawyers in the Orlando area. In order to make these endorsements beneficial for both the professionals

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

and our audience, we research and gain input from our readers to ensure that each doctor and lawyer is a great addition to our magazine. We appreciate your thoughts and opinions, and we always love hearing your feedback about the professionals who advertise with us. Please let us know about your personal experiences with our endorsed advertisers, as well as others whom you would love to see in our magazines. Also, our goal is to fill our pages with advertisements that are catered to your interest, so we are always grateful to hear what brands and products you enjoy. Our readers are the heart and soul of Style Magazines, and we desire to continue to earn your trust, just as we have for all these years. Ever since our very first issue, our image has always set standards for lifestyle publications, and we are dedicated to keeping this impeccable aesthetic every month. We hope that you will love this amazing November Luxury issue, which is filled with glamorous photography and compelling stories. You will find interesting looks at what defines luxury, as well as the latest trends in local beauty and fashion. I hope you are all enjoying the cooler weather that fall has brought us, and I wish you a peaceful Thanksgiving holiday and the time to truly enjoy it with your family and friends. May you all find much to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving! Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

> Happy November Orlando! Stores are stocking shelves with Christmas favorites and turkeys are nowhere to be seen… you know what that means! It’s fall time in the City Beautiful and as with every season, this highly anticipated one was kicked off with an impressive lineup of thrilling, not-to-be-missed events. Just in case you did miss one though, we’ve got all the highlights for you! Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world. A world where something else is possible... a world called Varekai. From September 17th-21st Cirque du Soleil’s newest arena show, Varekai, came to the Amway Center for seven unforgettable performances. The story revolves around a solitary young man let go from the sky and parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest. There he experiences a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures and extraordinary adventure. The audience packed the Amway each night of the performance in high anticipation of Cirque du Soleil’s beautifully choreographed show.

On September 30th, Gap at The Mall at Millenia celebrated the official launch of GQ for Gap. The store has partnered with one of the best new menswear designers in the country and is now featuring their latest designs in Gap’s own collection. The launch event was an undeniable hit as crowds showed up to shop the newest and hottest fall styles from Brooklyn Tailor, John Elliott, M.Nii and En Noir. Guests enjoyed light refreshments throughout the night and had a blast putting together their perfect GQ look with the help of Gap’s men’s stylists who were available and happy to assist. It was an evening full of fashion, shopping and fun! Orlando’s trusted practice in the medical aesthetics industry has moved, but they’re only 200 yards from their previous location so no need to worry! On October 9th, Couture Med Spa celebrated the grand opening of their new Winter Park location: 1155 N Orange Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789. The free event was open to the public and featured delicious food, drinks, door prizes, raffles, live DJ entertainment and much more. In honor of the special grand opening,

Couture offered partygoers all-time lowest prices for one night only. Guests toured the gorgeous new facility, partied with fellow attendees and even entered for the chance to win a year of complimentary Botox and filler treatments. On October 11th, the 18th Annual Tales & Tails Gala was held at the gorgeous Rosen Shingle Creek-Orlando. The evening began with a lovely reception and silent auction, which was followed by a live auction and an exquisite dinner. 100% of the proceeds raised were directly for the benefit of Canine Companions for Independence that provides free, highly trained assistance dogs to help and enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Each year, the Tales & Tails Gala is an event never fails to entertain and impress. This year, they brought a little rock n’ roll to the night with their Music City Experience theme. Guests felt the spirit of Music City, USA come to life with live musical performances by the Blue Sky Riders (Kenny Loggins, Georgia Middleman, Gary Burr). The evening’s featured speaker was retired US Air Force Staff Sgt. Jason Morgan and his service dog Rue, both graduates

of the Canine Companions for Independence Wounded Veterans Initiative. The evening was an undeniable success as a memorable time was had by all. Halloween came to Pointe Orlando early this year as Taverna Opa hosted its Lucky 7 Haunted Casino event! The charitable event held on October 29th, transformed the restaurant into a “spooked” casino with a live magician show, a pumpkin carver, a contortionists and other live entertainment. After a small donation at the door, guests received tokens to participate in blackjack and poker, among other popular casino games that were made available. Taverna Opa’s husbandand-wife duo, Katerina and Vassilis Coumbaros, made certain guests were satisfied throughout the evening by providing plenty of house favorites such as Spanakopita, Chicken Kebobs and Hummus, paired with craft cocktails by Enlighten Grained Spirits and Winter Park Distilling Company. All proceeds from the door donations and silent auction benefited Give Kids The World, a non-

profit organization dedicated to fulfilling the wishes of children and families with life-threatening illnesses. If you missed out on Downtown Orlando’s Plazaween block party, then you missed out on not one, but two unforgettable nights of Halloween fun! On Saturday the 25th, the celebration started early with a Pre-Plazaween Block Party. The event featured live music, excellent drink specials and a hilarious costume contest that resulted in one lucky recipient winning free drinks for a year on Wall Street! On Halloween night, Downtown Orlando was a sea of zombies, celebrities, movie characters, nurses and much more as partygoers showed up for the official Plazaween Block Party. Barbie danced with a pirate, Frozen’s Elsa took shots with Dracula and villains and heroes alike all came together for a fantastic night of Halloween celebrations. If you missed out on the fun, don’t worry! The Plazaween block party continues for two more nights on November 1st-2nd.

On October 31st, the philanthropic organization Guys With Ties teamed up with whats2hot.com and Aloft Hotel to bring good times and laughter to the city with their Ninth Annual Costumes For a Cause and a “Haunted Hotel” Costume Party at Aloft Orlando Downtown. The sold-out event was met with an impressive turnout of costumed guests eager to celebrate the scariest night of the year. It was high energy all evening long as attendees danced, mingled and complimented one another on their fantastic and often creative costumes. The hosts and their guests enjoyed drinks from 5 bars, great music from 3 live DJ’s and most importantly, great company as hundreds of Orlando’s finest came together dressed in their Halloween best. Guys With Ties seek to raise money with local charities that focus on special needs of the Central Florida community. MOST EXPEN IVE THESE CELEBS TRAVEL IN LUXURY ON LAND… AND ON SEA!

> Let’s face it. We all know celebrities have the best toys. In the air, they’re soaring around on private jets. On the ground, they’re racing past our sedans in one of their many exotic sports cars. With all this in mind, would you really expect anything less than the world’s most luxurious yachts when it comes to getting around on water? While many of us can afford to purchase a nice boat, most are far from the type of wealth required to own and sail around in the vessels you’re about to see on our list. Get your sunscreen out! We’re going aboard some of the world’s most expensive yachts owned by celebrities. StyleToMe.com

STEVEN SPIELBERG • $200 MILLION

GIORGIO ARMANI • $76 MILLION

Steven Spielberg is an Academy Award winning director widely recognized as one of the most popular and influential filmmakers of all time. With a net worth of $3 billion, it’s no surprise that Spielberg owns one of the most expensive yachts in the world, the Seven Seas. Anyone whose seen Spielberg’s movie Jaws knows the famous line “We’re going to need a bigger boat,” but that most certainly won’t be necessary here. Spielberg’s yacht is approximately 282 feet and was designed by the privately owned custom yacht builder, Oceanco. The Seven Seas features a state-of-the-art stabilization system aboard, which allows it to cruise smoothly in a variety of seas. In layman’s terms, the 67-yearold director—who admits he got seasick during the filming of Jaws—made certain that wouldn’t be the case on Seven Seas. Perhaps one of the most impressive features is the yacht’s infinity pool that boasts a 15′ glass wall that transforms into an outdoor movie screen. The main salon has a professional projection system and oversized viewing screen as well as raked seating to turn the area into a personal movie theater. If you can’t leave your work behind then you might as well enjoy screening your films in the middle of the ocean on one of the world’s most luxurious yachts!

Giorgio Armani is one of the most successful designers of all time. His name is his brand and both are widely recognized throughout the world. A world in which he often travels around via Main, one of the largest yachts built in Italy. Skim through a few photos of Armani’s 213-foot yacht and it will become immediately apparent that his meticulous attention to detail and design in fashion will not be compromised when it comes to his boat. Although the luxury yacht goes against the norm by being solid black, it makes sense for someone like Armani who refuses to follow the crowd. Designed to be an elegant, perfect space for relaxation and leisure, Main features everything from swimming pools and revolving lounge chairs on the sundeck to a high-end designer kitchen and bar. With numerous guest suites, Armani is famous for his lavish yacht parties. He also allows his boat to be used for high-end magazine photo shoots featuring his lines and why wouldn’t he? There’s no better place to shoot designer clothing than on one of the world’s top designer’s yacht.

CELEBRITY SOUP - 27

CELEBRITY YACHTS

JOHNNY DEPP • $70 MILLION

P. DIDDY • $65 MILLION

ERIC CLAPTON • $60 MILLION

He aspired to be a pirate as a young boy and then went on to portray Hollywood’s most famous pirate to date, Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of The Caribbean. I’m talking about none other than Johnny Depp and as an actor whose hit movie franchise was filmed on the sea, it makes perfect sense that he would want some playtime on the sea as well. Depp’s yacht is called Vajoliroja. The odd name is a combination of the first letters of Depp’s ex-partner’s name Vanessa Paradis (Va-), his own name (-jo-), their daughter Lily-Rose (-liro-) and son Jack (-ja). Vajoliroja is 156 feet long and has room for ten guests in five cabins and eight crewmembers. It comes equipped with a variety of watersports equipment such as water skis, a wakeboard, kneel board and snorkeling gear. Fortunately for those of us who aren’t world famous actors—or one of the most desired men in the world—Depp offers his private luxury yacht for chartered rent through the Bahamas and Caribbean. Prices run approximately $130,000 a week in the peak season and $110,000 in the low season.

When you are one of the most successful rappers, designers and music producers in the world, you can afford to splurge on something as one-of-a-kind as P. Diddy’s luxurious 4-story mega yacht. Majraya is the name of Diddy’s expensive toy and she was worth every single penny. The top deck is perfectly designed for lavish parties with a wet bar, a projection television screen and a stage. In the living room you’ll find furniture made of only the softest, most luscious leather. To protect the thick cream-colored carpets in the interior of Majraya, guests are asked to remove their shoes and go barefoot. A crew of 10 people aboard the 54-foot yacht allow guest to be thoroughly spoiled and taken care of to the utmost degree. When it comes to P. Diddy’s toys, don’t expect nothing short of the best and Majraya is no exception.

Eric Clapton is an award-winning singer and because of his worldwide success, the famous artist is also the proud owner of a gorgeous yacht named Va Bene (Italian for ‘fine’). Measuring an impressive 157 feet in length, Va Bene has space on board to accommodate up to 12 guests at once and a crew of 13. In addition to six bedrooms, other luxury features and amenities make Va Bene the perfect space for relaxation and rejuvenation. Just ask Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z who paid $195,000 to rent the yacht for one week. The lavish boat contains a Jacuzzi, a weight room, Satellite TV, the use of two Jet-skis and a rooftop sun deck where guests can work on their tan while checking out the spectacular ocean views. <

> “As I photograph the other night sky, the other night sky photographs back,” writes Trevor Paglen. His 48 x 60 image of a soft-hued skyscape is part of the Fractured Narratives: a strategy to engage exhibition at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College. The peaceful scene, blues transitioning to warm orange hues, hides something intrusive. When one studies the image closely, a tiny black dot appears in the lower third of the photograph. It’s a drone in mid-flight. Untitled (Reaper Drone, 2012) reminds us that we live in a surveillance society where natural beauty is interrupted by technology built to observe, record, track, and even attack human targets. Paglen (b. 1974, U.S.) aims to expose “the other night sky” that we are not aware of its existence, or, perhaps, we wish to not accept as reality.

WHEN

BOOZE MEETS

BARREL By Cathleen K. Bode

> Whether you prefer your cocktail shaken or stirred,

there’s a technique mixologists are using to redefine the cocktail – in terms of taste and color.

WELCOME THE BARREL-AGED COCKTAIL. The concept is not new but is taking off quickly with mixologists who like to experiment and elevate the cocktail experience. While you probably won’t find a barrel-aged cocktail on the menu at your favorite fast casual dining spot, you will find a great selection at bars and restaurants that support craft cocktails. Alex Smith, Spirits Director at the Black Sheep Restaurant Group says, “Barrel-aging can be a real game changer.” Black Sheep is a modern American restaurant that works with local purveyors and offers both great food and great cocktails. Known for inno-

vating the classics, Smith adds, “Barrel-aging is another way to take great classic cocktails and create new flavor experiences.” Portland-based, celebrated mycologist at Clyde Common and Author of The Bar Book, Elements of Cocktail Technique (Chronicle Books) Jeffrey Morgenthaler adds, “With a barrel you extract some of the wood characteristics—oak tannins, caramel, and vanillin—but the important thing is extracting some of previous contents. The final product has a silkier mouth feel, and the components of the cocktail marry more than in fresh cocktails.” Morgenthaler is credited for being the first mixologist

BARFLY - 45

in the U.S. to showcase this technique after he sampled bottled aged cocktails in London. If you think about barrel-aging in terms of the food universe it’s evident that barrel-aging is not new at all. In fact, there’s a list of foods that are made using this technique including pickles, mustard and maple syrup and the newly popular condiment, Sriracha. So, is it about the barrel or the cocktail? Most mixologists will agree it’s about both. “One of the reasons to barrel age is to extract the flavors from the barrel, so what has been in the barrel before is important,” says Dean Hurst, Director of Spirits, SideBerns. For their “Three Amigos” cocktail served at Bern’s and SideBerns, Hurst chose a Hudson Baby Bourbon Barrel to age the batch because the bourbon was the

weakest player and he hoped to bring it out in the finished cocktail. Hurst also believes that this different offering adds to the hospitality experience. “Not only does the barrel-aging justify the cost but it allows us to open a conversation with our guests.” Joshua Hiller, mixologist at Siro at the Orlando World Center Marriott says his ‘Ciao Milano,’ the first barrel-aged cocktail on the menu at this super chic bar, is as popular today as it was when it was first placed on the list. “All of our cocktails are based on the classics. This cocktail let us play with bourbon, in fact we used Buffalo Trace. We used honey from one of our partners, Lake Meadow Naturals and then used Carpano Bianco Vermouth to add a lighter wine hint to the cocktail. You can say the Bianco added a lift to the cocktail. Not only that, the Milano theme is also evident in the

few drops of Fernet-Branca we add to the barrel,” says Hiller. “I think the Fernet-Branca adds a bit of freshness to the cocktail.” The cocktail is aged for about 46–50 days in St. George Spirit Barrels and like all of the other offerings on the menu; this best-selling cocktail is priced at $14. According to Morgenthaler, “Barrel-aging is essentially little more than infusing alcohol with wood, a process that has been part of the beverage world for centuries.” Wines, spirits and even beers take on some characteristics of the oak barrels they are stored in. No matter what the barrel-aged cocktail, if you are offered one of these fine libations, say yes. The taste experience is like no other and you can be sure that the mixologist and his team put time and thought into the cocktail. In fact, we’re sure you’ll say “I’ll have another!” <

INTELLECTUAL

PROPERTY

DO I HAVE IT? HOW SHOULD I PROTECT IT? By Mark NeJame

Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> We’ve all heard of intellectual property, but hey – do we really know what that stuff is? Do you own any? Is it protected? The answers to these questions can be complex, but an overview of the basics may trigger that “ah-ha” moment…perhaps just enough to be able to ask informed questions and begin the process of protecting, or at least know when you should. Intellectual property is many things. It’s the intangibles. IP can be ideas, designs, formulas, codes, programs, databases, stories, articles, songs, slogans, symbols. We’ve all heard the buzzwords “copyright” “trademark” and “patent.” These are just some of the ways in which intellectual property is protected; these protections are readily available to you – just pick up the phone and call your attorney.

that enables you to enter your product or idea (we will call it a widget) into the marketplace with some assurance third parties will not try to claim it as his or her own. There are three types of patents: utility (which covers function), design (which covers aesthetics) and plant (which covers plants of the botanical variety). In the wake of the medical marijuana boom, plant patents may be an up-and-coming topic.

PATENT PROTECTION:

Determining if your widget has commercial viability and creating a prototype are the most important first steps. Perhaps your widget is similar to many other widgets out there – if this is true, the United States Patent and Trademark Office obtaining meaningful protection may be difficult.

In legal world, a patent is what’s known as a negative right. If the United States Patent and Trademark Office grant your patent, the U.S. government is endowing you with the exclusive right to exclude others from making, using or selling your work. A patent is a form of protection

StyleToMe.com

Once an application is filed and the widget is “patent pending,” there may be some back-and-forth (or patent prosecution) between your patent attorney and a patent examiner. Applications can take up to five years from filing to granting. Be careful not to wait too long to file for patent protection, but don’t file too soon, either. Under U.S. law, once you publicly disclose your invention, you have one year to submit your application or else you may lose the right altogether. TRADEMARKS: Registration of trademarks is governed by Florida Statutes, Chapter 495. Trademark law means providing the IP owner with exclusive right to use a symbol or mark that distinguishes the goods or products of one person from another. It

IN THE KNOW - 47

could be a word, phrase, design or logo used to identify a company or product. A service mark is the same as a trademark, except it identifies the source of services. Trademarks are valuable assets, which generate repeat business due to recognition and familiarity. Registering your trademark has the effect of preventing competitors from using a mark to which they are not entitled. The trademark owner has “good will” in the company; consumer goodwill is earned by a business over a period of time and has intrinsic value. Trademark law also protects consumers from deception. Not only can a trademark owner prevent someone from using its exact mark, but using marks that are “confusingly similar” to a trademark can be legally prohibited. Unlike rights in a patent or a copyright, an owner’s rights in a trademark can last

in perpetuity as long as the mark is in use and registration is regularly renewed. COPYRIGHT LAW: Intellectual property such as original writings, music, designs and other works of expression are protected under federal copyright law, which gives the author exclusive rights to use the works. Copyright generally terminates seventy years after the author’s death. It may be a familiar concept that “copyright is automatic when a work is created,” which is in a sense true, but the key to protecting and enforcing is copyright notice and registration. Copyright notice, or © used in conjunction with the first year of publication and the name of the author/owner, puts the public on notice that the work is protected. Registration isn’t required, how-

ever if an author/owner wishes to bring an infringement lawsuit, registration is a necessary condition precedent. A copyright can be registered through the U.S. Copyright Office at the Library of Congress (www.copyright.gov). So to all the inventors, the entrepreneurs, the aspiring authors and artists, the internet has provided a global marketplace to share your talents with those across the world, but don’t underestimate the value of a good idea. Keep it under lock and key until your intellectual property is protected; you’ll never again utter the words “Hey! That was my idea…” <

50 - DON’T MISS THE BEAT

“TAYLOR CAME FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, AND THESE BEGINNINGS INFLUENCED MUCH OF HIS ICONIC SOUND THAT LISTENERS HAVE COME TO LOVE OVER THE DECADES.”

JAMES TAYLOR

LIVE AT THE AMWAY CENTER By Courtney Caggiano

> On November 18, James Taylor will bring his soulful sound to the Amway Center in Orlando,

filling the Florida air with the enchanting music of a generation gone by. With his warm, willowy vocals and insightful, thought-provoking lyrics, Taylor has brought folk music to the forefront of American culture, with nothing more than a creative genius hidden behind an acoustic guitar.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

DON’T MISS THE BEAT - 51

From his breakthrough in 1970 that came as a result of the hit song, “Fire and Rain,” a single that Rolling Stone has declared to be the 227th greatest song of all time, Taylor has established himself as one of the most successful artists of the 20th century, and he has reached unparalleled commercial popularity while also touching the hearts of millions worldwide. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Taylor’s artistry is his ability to connect with listeners from all walks of life on both the largest and smallest of scales. Taylor can perform effortlessly in front of thousands of fans, whether in an arena or on national television, yet he can also strike a chord in the most intimate of settings. No matter the venue, Taylor never fails to demonstrate his beautiful gift of entering into the emotions of his audiences, big or small. This perceptibility of Taylor’s character defines his personable artistry that has shaped a generation of songwriters as well as those who aim to follow in his shadow. In 1970, he released his first album that reached critical acclaim, Sweet Baby James, which landed at Number Three on the Billboard Charts and sold over one and a half million copies in its first year alone. The suddenly successful Sweet Baby James was truly a folk-rock masterpiece, as it was a culmination of the raw passion found in Americana rock and the tender nuances of the folk genre. This album showcased Taylor’s young talent as well as his incredible potential, and his first

step into mainstream public appeal was only the beginning of a lifelong journey. Although he has achieved such greatness as both a songwriter and a performer, Taylor came from humble beginnings, and these beginnings influenced much of his iconic sound that listeners have come to love over the decades. Growing up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Taylor developed an appreciation for the solitude he found in the tranquility of nature. The Chapel Hill area and the outlying hills provided Taylor with the perfect inspiration for songwriting. He experienced firsthand the undeniable yet often overlooked truth that the beauty of sound is found in silence. From the calming colors of the red soil and rolling creeks to the soothing scent of the changing seasons, life as a country boy treated Taylor to the joys of simplicity that would affect him not only in his songwriting, but his lifestyle as well. However, while he may have always been a simple man in the eyes of the world, Taylor was quite an innovator in his own right. What began as a love for music steeped in the deep traditions of hymns and folk tunes from singers such as Woody Guthrie soon evolved into an experimental journey. Taylor tried to discover all that American instrumentation had to offer, even teaching himself new methods of performance technique. At a young age, Taylor learned to play the cello, but rather than studying classically, he

created his own fingerpicking style of playing that resembled the harmonic sound of a piano. The inventive musician may have gained himself a household name for his songwriting ability, but he always tried to give back to nature, perhaps to show his gratitude for the inspiration that he found in the outdoors. In October 1970, he performed at a Vancouver benefit concert to fund Greenpeace’s protests of the 1971 nuclear weapons tests. Taylor has also become well known for his humanitarian heart. He was honored as the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences MusiCares Person of the Year in 2006, which celebrated his commitment to the musical and cultural arts as well as environmental causes. Even today, Taylor continues to charm audiences with his sensitive spirit and innovative musicianship, and he is sure to bring back memories of the past era at his Orlando concert. In a world that seems to be constantly bombarded with pop music and modern trends, Taylor is sure to greet Orlando with a long-awaited respite of folk-inspired relaxation. Whether you were a fan of Taylor in his prime or you have just recently come to love the simple style of songs such as “Carolina on My Mind,” you will not want to miss the living legend in this unforgettable show. <

“WHEN YOU LOSE SOMEONE WHO IS AS CLOSE TO YOU AS A BROTHER, THE ONLY WAY TO REALLY MOVE FORWARD AND OUT OF PAIN IS TO DO THINGS THAT COMMEMORATE HIS LIFE.”

CHEF NORMAN VAN AKEN HONORS CHARLIE TROTTER By Courtney Caggiano

> On Saturday, December 13, Norman’s at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes will be

hosting an elegant evening to honor the late Charlie Trotter. This reception, which will feature a variety of hors d’oeuvres and culinary stations presented by renowned local chefs, is the work of Chef Norman Van Aken himself, one of Trotter’s dearest friends and closest confidants.

CELEBRITY CHEF - 53

The story of Chef Norman and Charlie Trotter can be compared to a work of beat poetry or an American folk anthem; the unassuming authenticity that laces their relationship reveals these chefs not only to be masters of their art, but also masters of finding art in the everyday. Just as the poetry of Jack Kerouac and the songwriting of Bob Dylan seemed quite simplistic in their own generation, the story of Norman and Charlie is defined by a realism that, at first sight, may not seem to be of any vibrant worth, yet carries great value when viewed in retrospect.

creating an original genre of culinary culture: New American Cuisine. Sinclair’s was named for Gordon Sinclair, one of Chicago’s pioneering restaurateurs of the 20th Century, and Norman and Charlie earnestly sought to further Sinclair’s vision for expanding the nation’s appetite. There were no limits to the inventions behind the kitchen doors, and surrounded by an infinite optimism, Charlie had found an environment that suited his depth of creativity. Charlie was perhaps one of the most creative chefs to grace the culinary map, and it is evident in the many honors that paved the path of his career. He reached

In the summer of 1982, Charlie Trotter was working as a busboy at Sinclair’s, the restaurant in Illinois in which Norman was hired as a chef, and asked for a job in the kitchen. “I will tell you that I did not see greatness in him when he was a busboy,” Norman remembers. “The first months of him working were like any person struggling when they’re seeking to become a sufficient cook… He burned himself and he cut himself a lot.” Although met with the challenges any beginning chef faces, Charlie was sure that A Young Norman Van Aken with friends Emeril Lagasse and Charlie Trotter his trying times would pass, as was Norman. “I think I noticed that despite the burns instant appeal with the 1987 opening of and cuts, he just didn’t let it slow him the Chicago restaurant Charlie Trotter’s, down.” and James Beard Foundation named him the nation’s Outstanding Chef in The experience shared in this restaurant 1999. However, his creativity was not laid the foundation for a friendship confined to the kitchen. built on not only a love for cooking, but also a dedication to learning. “It was “Charlie was an extraordinary reader, there in that restaurant that I began unlike a lot of chefs,” Norman states, to see this person that Charlie Trotter “and our kindred interest in reading could become. It was through his same created a bond between us that began dedication that I had toward learning… to morph out into other aesthetics and we were self-teaching. We didn’t including film and music, which he was have a school, there wasn’t a food as vitally interested in as cooking.” network, and there wasn’t James Beard Foundation.” Norman says. His talent for the culinary arts may have served as the gateway for Charlie Self-teaching was a necessity because to display his spirit to the world, but they were not just cooking, they were Norman will be the first to emphasize

that cooking was simply the means of Charlie’s artistic endeavors rather than an end. “I felt like what people sort of don’t see enough of is Charlie beyond the kitchen and his amazing interest in so many different things.” Looking back on their common affinities, Norman recalls that the foremost trait defining his friendship with Charlie was a reverence for their art at hand, which— although this art took various forms in the lives of the two chefs—began as cooking. “It’s the reverence for food… from how it’s grown to the myriad beauty of food and its so many different iterations…beautiful herbs, beautiful fish, beautiful fruit. You want to work with them, play with them, discover them—for a musician, it’s beautiful instruments—a rare violin or a Martin guitar or an amazing piano: something that just drives you crazy.” As their careers furthered, this reverence for creation almost became a selfless admiration. Both Charlie and Norman understood that they were creating a consumable art, so the journey of innovating became the goal; after they labored for hours in their kitchens, there was nothing left for themselves, for their masterpieces had vanished from the visual realm. “That’s one thing about being a chef: our art is one that disappears. There’s no statue, there’s no painting, and there’s not even a CD or a tape of it. It’s all gone. Consumed.” Yet, this vanishing act merely motivated Norman and Charlie to remove themselves from their work, allowing the satisfaction of their customers to become the forefront of their craft’s importance. “As some wise woman pointed out to me, it remains alive through memory,” says Norman. He describes the fullness of his reward as “the satisfaction you see that you can give people once you’ve fed them in ways that have altered their

perception as to what food can be.” As he looks forward to December’s honorary event, Chef Norman hopes to bring Charlie’s myriad charms to life—for all to experience. “When you lose someone who is as close to you as a brother, the only way to really move forward and out of pain is to do things that commemorate his life. It’s a blessing that we have the organization to do something here at Norman’s that lets me act on that commemoration in such a way that brings the community together,” he says. The evening will also benefit the Trotter Project, which creates charitable initiatives focused on the culinary arts and education programs. Not only does this project share the values and love of giving back that Charlie held dear, it allows those who did not know Charlie to gain a brilliant perception of his caring spirit. “The Trotter Project’s ongoing mission is to create this legacy of learning and community sharing that Charlie believed in so much and dedicated his restaurant to,” says Norman. Passing on to others that which we have been given is the hallmark of the Trotter Project, a hallmark that Norman states is the incentive behind his commemorative event. “It’s really some of the best that we can do in the world that we live in, which is a mortal world…a mortal world.” The earthly world we see and feel—and OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

taste—may be merely mortal, but what we choose to do with the beauty that we see, and the love that we feel—even the food that we taste—lives on. A testament to this not-so-idealistic thought, Charlie Trotter was always eager to share his love with those in his reach, wherever it would take him. He even drove across the country twice while reading Kerouac’s beat narrative, On the Road, and when he would finish 50 pages, he would tear them out and leave them somewhere, whether in a diner or on a train, along with the hope that others would come across the excerpts and discover a life they had once lost or a passion they had never found. “What’s so beautiful about that is the anonymity of it,” Norman says. “He was just moved by Kerouac’s story, and whoever came along and picked it up would not know it came from him. That is the kind of generosity of soul that is the purest.” It was this love for the postmodern American arts, which he shared with the people of his vast and ethereal generation—hidden in the words of Kerouac—that had fueled Charlie’s spirited drive. “He was constantly trying to avail the great works of art to his teams, so it sort of shocked him that a lot of the people that come to work in kitchens can be incredibly driven when it comes to understanding and caring

about food, but not know the scenes out of Coal Miner’s Daughter or The Godfather,” Norman remembers. “Now I could almost wonder whether or not he knew that he had to get all he could into life and give back as much as he could because he was not going to be here for the longest time.” “I think when death hits early, life becomes something that you don’t wish to waste,” says Norman. This may be one of the greatest tokens of wisdom that Charlie has provided for us. As we face tomorrow with the legacy Charlie has left, may we be inspired by this thought, to live with purpose and always in love. Just as a fortunate passerby may have read in Charlie’s copy of Kerouac’s book, “nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road.” Please join us for an unforgettable night with Chef Norman & friends in Tribute To Charlie Trotter and to benefit The Trotter Project. < For more information visit: www.normans.com Norman’s at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes 4012 Central Florida Pkwy, Orlando, FL 32837 407-393-4333

“THE SECRET TO GREAT STYLE IS LIVING YOUR LIFE BY WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SEE.”

FASHION ADVICE FROM

LAWRENCE ZARIAN By Courtney Caggiano

> This year’s Mall at Millenia Fashion Week brought new trends for fall, innovative looks from emerging designers, and inspiring thoughts from celebrity host, Lawrence Zarian. This lifestyle and fashion expert, who has been featured on Live With Kelly & Michael, Steve Harvey, and Rachel Ray, has some of the most unconventional ideas in the industry. Orlando Style sat down with Zarian to discuss his fashion philosophy, must-haves for fall, his new book, and the worthy cause behind Runway to Hope.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

CELEBRITY STYLIST - 57

Orlando Style: When and how did you develop your love for fashion? Lawrence Zarian: I remember being very young, when I would go shopping with my mom, and I was always looking at some of the clothes she was wearing… and then as I got older, when I was out shopping for myself, and I would see a woman put on something nice, I would stop her and say, “That looks very pretty on you.” So, I think I was just always looking at fashion, and I always loved complimenting what worked. I never see what doesn’t work... I always look at what works. OS: What do you think is the secret to great style? LZ: The secret to great style is living your life by what other people see. So, if you wear something and everyone says, “I love that top,” just pay attention to what the world sees, and then you start piecing it all together, and your style has evolved. I think you take the style basics, and then you start adding your own signature pieces…. I think your style evolves, but that happens as soon as you start becoming more comfortable with who you are. OS: What do you think is a necessity for every woman’s closet? LZ: Dark denim jeans that fit. You have to find them, and do not tell me you can’t find jeans that fit… Spend what you can afford, and you can find a pair of jeans that fit, and if they don’t fit perfectly, get them tailored. OS: What is your favorite new trend for fall? LZ: I’m a huge fan of the jewel tone for fall. Jewel tones are so reigning supreme, and it used to be that jewel tones were only for holidays…. I also love the concept of the oversize. It’s the oversized sweaters, it’s exaggerated things; you balance that out with a skinny leg.

OS: Tell us about your book, Lawrence Zarian’s Ten Commandments for a Perfect Wardrobe. LZ: My book takes women on a journey to celebrate who they are with where they are right now in their lives. You can’t go back, and who knows what the future is, so embrace yourself now. So many women see what’s on television, in the magazines, and they want to be that; that’s not realistic, that’s fantasy… Nobody should ever want to be that. You should be who you are. I’ve been doing makeovers for fifteen years… every time I do a makeover, I get to show a woman things that make her look and feel better… At the end of that entire journey, women always say to me, “I’d love to take you home with me,” so I thought I would take fifteen years of my experience of working in the trenches and give them a tool… It’s a journey book; it’s not a fashion book. If you’re wanting to buy a book that tells you exactly what you need for your wardrobe, then don’t buy my book. If you want to buy a book that will take you on a journey to teach you more about who you are, how to make yourself feel a little better, how to really celebrate and embrace your inner beauty, then this is your book.

OS: Why do you think fashion is such an important way to show the children of Runway to Hope that they are loved and cared for? LZ: Children that are diagnosed with cancer at a young age feel like their life is coming to an end. When you have a partnership with Runway to Hope, it really opens up the door for hope, and as long as you have hope, you’re always alive. Be sure to uncover of all of Zarian’s fashion secrets in his new book, Lawrence Zarian’s Ten Commandments for a Perfect Wardrobe, and follow Lawrence on Instagram at @LawrenceZarian! <

OS: What aspect of your job brings you the most joy? LZ: The big reveal. When a woman looks in the mirror and finally sees how great she is. Now, that’s not with the hair, the makeup, the clothes… somewhere along the journey a woman finally gets it: that she’s beautiful. And that always takes me down. I cry all the time… because God moved me here. I did not choose this career, I didn’t go to fashion school. This job was chosen for me, and God orchestrated all of that. I’ve always felt that God put me here to make people’s lives better… I think that’s what we’re here for.

ORLANDO STYLE SITS DOWN WITH WENDY WILLIAMS THE QUEEN OF CELEBRITY GOSSIP SPILLS THE BEANS ON HER OWN GOSSIP WORTHY LIFE! By Riesa Pascal

> Mother, wife, media mogul, entrepreneur, performer and bestselling author. Wendy Williams is a true Jill-of-all-Trades and as such, she is also a woman who’s always on the go. Last month, that roller coaster ride brought her right to our very own city of Orlando for one special weekend. Somewhere in the midst of a busy schedule that included various promotional appearances and charitable events, Williams managed to find some time to sit down and have a chat with Orlando Style Magazine at one of Orlando’s very best, Norman’s Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Although she started her successful career in radio, today Williams is best known as host of her long-running talk show, The Wendy Williams Show. The nationally syndicated program currently airs in 52 countries, most recent being South Africa, and that number is expected to grow as the popular show recently launched it’s 6th and highest rated season to date. Despite the fact that the program revolves around various celebrity gossip, Williams acknowledges that she would be kidding herself to think the show has lasted because everybody cares about the gossip she shares. As Williams truthfully pointed out, you can get celebrity gossip anywhere and ev-

erywhere these days. So what keeps ratings high and viewers coming back? “Maybe it’s the way I talk about it. Maybe it’s because my mouth waters when I have a juicy story or something good to eat. Maybe it’s because I can’t contain my tacky Jersey self and I lean forward and I’m like, ‘Come here, come closer. I want to tell you something.’”said Williams. If you’ve ever seen The Wendy Williams Show then you would have to agree with me that Williams’ success can undeniably be attributed to her gossip delivery, her contagious excitement and the unsuppressed passion she puts into each and every episode. This season Williams will be filming the1000th episode of her show, but her hectic schedule has kept her from thinking that far into the future with regards to how she might celebrate this milestone. Besides hosting her top-rated talk show, Williams also has a staggering number of other projects on the side. One such project that is very near and dear to Williams is being one of the executive producers of the Lifetime original biopic movie, Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B. “The movie is based on a book and I just want to be sure the story is told the way I want to hear the story because I was

there in Aaliyah’s career. I was there for the whole thing. I don’t want the movie to be sugar coated and I do want to be respectful to the family.” The movie is the first that Wendy Williams Production has produced and with the attention and care she’s put into it, we’re certain it won’t be her last. In addition to producing behind the camera, Williams has also been working on her acting in front. This Christmas, Williams’ fans should keep an eye out for a new Lifetime movie produced by Melissa Joan Hart, which Williams will be costarring in. Truly it was high energy and laughs all afternoon as we chatted and found out all that’s new with the daytime talk show queen. Despite turning 50 this year, Williams has no plans of slowing down. How does someone who’s always so busy find the time to balance it all? What do watchers of The Wendy Williams Show have to look forward to in the coming season? What major career announcements did Williams reveal to Orlando Style? Get these questions answered and more! Head over to Style-TV on OrlandoStyleMagazine.com right now for the full interview. <

80 - OUT & ABOUT

WELCOME BACK TO BALDWIN PARK By Autumn Barker

> When looking to buy a house, we look for more than a sturdy structure - We look for a home that is part of a collective in which we can easily merge. Baldwin Park is an upscale residential area in Orlando that is more than just a collection of apartments, condos, and houses - it is a community. A former US Navy base, Baldwin Park was reconstructed for residential zoning in early 2000 and named after Robert H. Baldwin, the former secretary of the Navy. The area still retains some of its military history; the VA hospital is still located there, as well as a few other military offices. The true charm in Baldwin Park, however, lies in the sense of community you feel as soon as you arrive in the area. As you drive along, you may see a young professional out for a run, families playing in their yards, young mothers walking their dogs and pushing strollers while the elderly chat on their porches. The main street, New Broad Street, has the essence of Charleston, South Carolina and serves as a one stop shopping area to meet all the community’s needs.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

The local Publix serves as the main grocer and there are several local restaurants offering a buffet of options, everything from Italian to sushi to fine dining. No area would be complete without a sports bar and a local watering hole- Gator’s Dockside CaddyShanks share the title, and the latter boasts a virtual golf course. Farris and Foster’s Chocolate Factory is a great location for date night or a girls’ night out, where parties can spend an evening creating their favorite chocolate candies together. Victoria Jewelers in Baldwin Park is a specialty shop that can fix most types of jewelry, including John Hardy’s specialty clasps. For families, there’s a gymnastics gym and swimming pool, a dance studio, and a martial arts studio where children can follow their dreams while learning new skills. There is also an “off leash” dog park located on Lake Baldwin where dogs are able to exercise and interact with other pups. With a pathway that goes around its full circumference, Lake Baldwin is great for walking, running, or biking. To promote a cohesive sense of community, the homeowner’s association holds

exciting events for its residents every month. From chili cook-offs to Fourth of July festivals complete with fireworks, every gathering offers opportunity for comradery. On the first Friday of every month, New Broad Street is turned into an outdoor market where residents can shop for everything from locally grown produce to the latest in street food fare, and every weekend you can find live music at either Gator’s Dockside or Upton Park Wine Bar. Although Baldwin Park is located only three miles from downtown Orlando, the appeal is that it doesn’t feel busy and rushed like the rest of the city. In the future, the Baldwin Park area is looking to diversify vendors, so it can better serve its current and future residents. Currently, Baldwin Park has four apartment complexes, a collection of condos and townhouses, single family homes and multi-million dollar mansions to accommodate and attract everyone from the young bachelor to the settled family. Baldwin Park is still growing, and it has the potential to be one of Orlando’s top neighborhoods. A community that ensures there is truly something for everyone. <

FOREIGN ACCOUNT TAX COMPLIANCE ACT TARGETS FOREIGN BANKS AND U.S. CITIZENS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act was enacted in 2010 to provide the IRS with more tools to discover undisclosed foreign accounts and unreported income. This law commonly known as FATCA has a direct impact on U.S. citizens and residents by requiring the yearly filing of IRS Form 8938, “Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets.” This form must be filed if assets are over $50,000. The amount of assets that trigger the requirement to file the Form 8938 is higher if the person is married and files a joint return and even greater if the person resides outside the U.S. FATCA is complicated further by the government’s definitions of assets which includes more than bank accounts and investment accounts. FATCA also applies to foreign financial institutions. The effect of this part of FATCA will significantly affect U.S. citizens with foreign accounts. Many foreign banks are closing accounts of U.S. citizens because the banks do not want to deal with the requirements of FATCA. In addition, foreign banks are required to report U.S. account holders to the IRS. When the IRS discovers unreported offshore accounts, the result SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

can be criminal prosecution and huge civil penalties. If the foreign account totals over $10,000, a “Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts” (FBAR) must be filed yearly. This is in addition to the Form 8938. While the purpose of FATCA to ensure tax compliance is a valid goal, its provisions are confusing and further add to the complications associated with the yearly filing of income tax returns. For those who have unreported offshore accounts, the prospect of approximately 77,000 foreign financial institutions reporting U.S. account holders to the IRS is a real and present risk of criminal prosecution. Fortunately, the IRS currently offers amnesty under the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP) if people enter the program before the foreign bank reports the accounts to the IRS. <

A LUXURY CLOTHING LINE FOR THE STYLISH TRAVELISTA Trunk Show at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando By Maria Delis

STYLE - 85

> “At Anatomie we work hard to design travel wear and sports wear that looks stunning, fits beautifully and flatters the female form, while perfectly suiting the function for which each piece is designed,” says Kate Boyer, Anatomie’s co-founder. “I understand what a woman needs in travel clothes in a variety of scenarios, so we created what we know works – and looks great!” Waldorf Astoria Spa

Kate and Shawn Boyer, the power couple behind Anatomie, have designed collections for luxury brands such as Elite Models and Lamborghini. The Miami-based company follows a “Less is More” philosophy, evident in its designs. Neutral-colored pieces that can be mixed and matched, make it easy for a travelista to pack for her European getaway, where she will look elegant while exploring the Colosseum, or while tasting wine on a Seine River dinner cruise. After all, as Coco Chanel once said, “simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance”! Each piece looks and feels luxurious and is made of the latest French and Italian microfiber fabrics. Plus, each piece is comfortable, machine-washable, and wrinkle-free. No need to iron! Exactly what a travelista needs. On October 2, Orlando Style gained unique access to a selection of Anatomie’s FW14 collection. For this season, blue, purple and green are mixed with the brand’s staple neutral hues. This was the first Anatomie Trunk Show at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, located near the Walt Disney World® Resort. Guests enjoyed sparkling wine and light hors d’oeuvres as they browsed the carefully selected pieces. The Waldorf Astoria® Spa hosted the show in one of the resort’s ballrooms, and is planning more special events through April. Anatomie’s collection is ideal for jetsetters, busy businesswomen, and active moms because it is stylish, durable, and versatile. “I’ve worn this red dress out to dinner and have also paired it with sandals for

a day by the beach,” said Valarie Maloff, Waldorf Astoria Spa Director, pointing to her Monika Ballerina dress. Maloff fell in love with the collection and has not only selected items for her personal wardrobe, but also for the WA Spa. Now

“Anatomie apparel fits the needs and bodies of women who want to look stunning, sophisticated and sexy, wearing travel clothes that exude comfort and ease,” states the Anatomie website. Now with partnerships that include IC Bellagio and NetJets, the brand is sold online, through exclusive boutiques, and in private trunk shows like the one held at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. The WA Spa has a limited selection of Anatomie pieces in its reception area, alongside exclusive beauty products. Located within steps of the resort’s lobby, the spa offers lavish pampering through a unique client-centric approach. According to its staff, each treatment begins with “a systematic analysis and precise skin diagnosis to reveal each guest’s primary focus.” The 2,400-square-foot oasis has 22 treatment rooms, luxury locker rooms and showers, even a lounge to enjoy a soothing cup of tea or a healthful snack. The Spa offers a full-service salon too. Guests not staying on the property receive complimentary valet parking on the day of their service, but they have to advise reservations at the time of booking. Florida residents enjoy a 20% discount on spa services Monday through Thursday. <

travelistas staying at the gorgeous resort have access to Anatomie’s best selling items that can be dressed up or down. The Skyler skinny pants, for example, are comfortable, flattering, and suited for an early-morning business meeting, or a night out in the city. Made of French Honiara fabric (92% polyamide and 8% elasthane), these pants are engineered for comfort.

CAN’T TOLERATE YOUR CPAP? We have a solution. Well over 50% of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) patients cannot tolerate their CPAP. If that’s the case with you or a loved one, you should be aware that OSA has many associated chronic diseases, and going without treatment can increase the risk from them. > What is OSA? OSA consists of a cycle of events. After the onset of sleep, the upper airway muscle tone relaxes, allowing the airway to collapse, which partially or totally blocks the airway. This brings on a total interruption of breathing (an apnea) or a partial cessation of breathing (a hypopnea), which decreases oxygen levels and increases carbon dioxide levels. Your body becomes starved for oxygen. The patient struggles to breathe, forcing them to awake and take action to relieve obstruction. Breathing resumes, oxygen levels increase, carbon dioxide is reduced; and the patient resumes sleep. This cycle can occur several dozen times per hour, severely compromising the central nervous system; and over time, further complicating associated diseases (co-morbidities). Did You know? OSA has a clinically proven high correlation with heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, making it one of the most devastating untreated diseases currently faced by the medical community.

Dr. Carl Bilancione Comprehensive & Cosmetic Dentistry, PA 2828 Casa Aloma Way, Suite 700 , Winter Park, FL 32792 IN-OFFICE WHITENING SPECIAL $350 Call for Details 407-678-4000 CosmeticDentistryFL@gmail.com www.smilebella.com

How is OSA Diagnosed? If you have heard horrible stories about staying overnight in a sleep lab, don’t worry! If your assessment results are positive, your sleep test can be completed in the comfort of your own home, hassle free.

The results are then reviewed by a Certified Sleep Physician who will make the final diagnosis, determine the severity, and make a treatment recommendation customized for you. The severity of the disease is determined by measuring the number of breathing interruptions (apneas and hypopneas) throughout the night that last more than 10 seconds. This measurement is defined as the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI). FDA approved unattended home diagnostic testing devices measure four parameters while you sleep: the number of Apneas and Hypopneas, breathing effort, and oxygen saturation levels. OSA is considered mild with an AHI of 5-15 per hour, moderate with an AHI of 16-30 per hour, and severe with an AHI at or above 30 per hour. How is OSA Treated? Once diagnosed, OSA is treated by the use of an Oral Appliance if the OSA is mild or moderate, which is the case over 70% of the time. The device, which advances the lower jaw and opens the airway, is custom made just for you, and it is fitted in the office, typically requiring only one follow up visit and test, and then annual checkups. In more severe cases, initial treatment may require the use of a Continuous Positive Air Pressure device (CPAP); however for some patients who cannot tolerate the CPAP, an Oral Appliance can still be used.<

CHOW DOWN THANKSGIVING FEASTS FOR YOUR PUP By Iliena Rodriguez

> With the holidays quickly approaching and the delicious smell of food filling the

air, Thanksgiving is a treat that everyone is looking forward too…especially our dogs. As you gather around the table ready to give thanks, you look down to see your dog running laps around the table barking and panting in hopes that food will fall onto the floor. You smile, and throw down a piece of turkey for your favorite companion. While this can be a wonderful way to add some lean protein and fresh veggies to your pup’s diet, there are also some hidden dangers in indulging your pet on this year’s holiday feast. According to everydayhealth.com A Thanksgiving Meals for Dogs, many of the traditional holiday recipes for people are dangerous to your dog’s health. According to the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, feeding dogs large quantities of a new food, as well as fatty foods, such as turkey gravy, mashed potatoes with butter, and dressing, can cause pancreatitis. If you’ve already allowed your pooch to overindulge, watch for warning signs, as this potentially deadly inflammation of the pancreas produces severe symptoms of diarrhea or vomiting.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

Instead of making a doggy bag for your pet full of leftovers, try preparing a safe Thanksgiving meal for your little furry friend. They deserve a real treat every once in a while too. Turkey is a great source of protein for any pooch, however, be sure to remove any excess skin or fat and stick to white meat, making sure there aren’t any bones. It might be tempting to toss a turkey bone your dog’s way during the holiday, but according to L.A. Animal Services, animalplanet.com’s Top 5 Thanksgiving Treats for Pets, turkey bones can easily break, and the sharp splinters can potentially cause damage to your dog’s intestines. Aside from tasty turkey, Mashed potatoes are another great side dish to add alongside the turkey, but make sure they are plain without any sour cream, butter, onions, garlic and scallions. Gravy and buttery side dishes are fatty foods that can cause diarrhea and/or vomiting. Green beans is a great fresh veggie to give your pet, but avoid any form of a casserole.

Want to give your pup something sweet? Try a small amount of cranberry sauce, but watch the sugar content in it. Plain canned pumpkin is okay too, but steer clear of any sort of pumpkin pie filling. Chocolate, as most of you know, is toxic to our canine friends. Chocolate can be fatal to dogs because it contains theobromine, which can increase your pup’s heart rate and causes hyperactivity, increased panting, twitching, diarrhea, and vomiting. Even sugar-free items that contain xylitol can be dangerous, causing stomach or intestinal irritation. Don’t forget this is an exciting time for friends, family, food and fun. Enjoy your guests but make sure to educate them, especially the less pet-savvy visitors, on rules for feeding your pet. We all want to relax after a huge feast in preparation for Black Friday sales instead of spending our holidays in a veterinary emergency room. <
