PUBLISHER’S NOTE
info@styletome.com. Orlando Style will always be at your side, working with you as we have with many advertisers before, to maximize your exposure at the most reasonable cost. Let’s talk real estate… Our research team is continually monitoring the local, regional, and international markets, and it has found that comparative prices for residential condos and homes are tremendously lower than those around the globe. You may expect properties in Paris or Tokyo to be more expensive than local housing, but even real estate in smaller, lesser-known areas in Asia and South America is priced much higher as well. With homes in our area at insanely low prices, be sure to act fast if you are considering buying a home. After talking to many realtors, I’m certain that prices will soon be on the rise again, so don’t miss the boat!
DEAR READERS, This new year is off to a fresh, bright new start, full of excitement in what the near future holds. Businesses are doing well, the stock markets are on the rise, and as for our local markets, our print magazines are also experiencing a high level of interest from advertisers. 2015 seems like a very promising year, and although we have seen horrible and cowardly acts of terror internationally, we are hopeful that acts of goodness and kindness will prevail and lead the way, allowing all of us to enjoy all that is to come. Now is the time to believe in growth for all businesses, big or small, and if we do what we can to support our local companies, good success is possible for many if not all of us. If your business could use progress, let us know and we’ll help you reach the growth you need. Our readers are always looking for new products, great offers, and a variety of services, and partnering with Orlando Style Magazine is a smart way to share your business with the local audience. Make your presence known throughout the Orlando area with our innovative social media advertisement options. For details, contact
During this month of love, we hope you enjoy our special Valentine’s issue with our always-amazing photo shoots, exciting editorial pieces, and the hottest trends for February. Our best wishes to all.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Style Events, News & Gossip From Around the City By Riesa Pascal Vines Grille and Wine Bar may be known for their steak and fine dining, but guests of their December 7th VIP event saw a very different side to Orlando’s beloved restaurant. It was truly a “banging good time” as percussion legends Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden and Tico Torres of Bon Jovi arrived at the venue for a jam session like no other. The two drummers were both in town for the December Classic charity golf event. Hosted by Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner and his wife Robin, the event sought to raise money for The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando. Attendees of the VIP event held at Vines, as well as Nicko and Tico themselves, all had a marvelous time enjoying the good vibes and entertaining atmosphere at one of Orlando’s hippest spots.
Happy New Year Orlando Style readers!
2015 is already on its way to becoming another memorable, fun-filled year. As always, I look forward to meeting you right here every month to bring you all the latest recaps and highlights. This time we’re winding the clock back to 2014 to see how the city of Orlando celebrated this past holiday season. Here are a few of the most important events, just in case you missed it! On December 5th, the 9th Annual Festivals of Speed returned to Orlando and transformed an aircraft hangar into a luxury lifestyle jetport reception. Guests gathered at the Orlando International Airport for a jam-packed night of premium cocktails from an open bar, themed food stations, live music, special gifts and more. The festival fun continued the following night with a wine connoisseur’s dinner at the award winning NORMAN’S Restaurant at the RitzCarlton Orlando. On December 6th, the three-day event came to an exciting close with the Festivals of Speed Display of Exotics. Guests experienced a fabulous display of the world’s most exotic cars, custom created motorcycles, high performance boats and the finest luxury lifestyle product displays.
It might have been chilly outside, but things were getting quite hot inside Aloft Orlando Downtown on December 9th! Guests joined Orlando Style Magazine at Aloft’s W XYZ bar for a viewing party of the Sexiest Show on TV. Generous donations at the door went to benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation of Central and Northern Florida. Attendees of the exclusive event enjoyed complimentary Champagne, a live DJ and unforgettable entertainment By Rockhard Revue and Emotions Dance Company. 20

CITY NEWS
In 2013, the world lost one of its finest chefs and Orlando’s Chef Norman Van Aken lost someone whom he considered a brother. On December 13th, NORMAN’S Restaurant hosted an elegant reception to honor Chef Norman’s late friend, Chef Charlie Trotter. It was an exquisite evening featuring enticing hors d’oeuvres presented by renowned local chefs as well as culinary stations throughout the restaurant by Chef Norman and his team. Many attendees also took advantage of the evening’s silent auction benefiting the Trotter Project, which aims to carry on the visions and values of Charlie Trotter. If you would like to join us in helping support Charlie Trotter’s legacy by donating to the Trotter Project, be sure to check out TheTrotterProject.org. On December 13th, the talented musicians of Central Florida’s rockin’ strings group “Violectric,” helped get the city in the spirit of the holiday season with a very unique holiday show. Free and open to the public, the concert featured traditional holiday songs like “Jingle Bells,” “O Christmas Tree” and “Hanukkah, O Hanukkah” mashed up with classic rock tunes like “Kashmir,” “Born To Run” and “Sweet Dreams.” Families and groups of friends from all walks of life showed up in packs to enjoy the electric string quintet with keyboards and drums. The evening followed a monumental night kicking off the entertainment at the Grand Opening Gala of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Walt Disney Theater. 2015 is going to be quite the busy year for Westgate Resorts! The renowned resort chain celebrated construction of the all-new Westgate Lakes Retail Village with a ground-breaking ceremony on December 15th. The $11 million mixeduse retail development will feature award-winning restaurants, event and meeting space and a parking garage at Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa on Turkey Lake Road in Orlando. Highlights of the village include 32,000 square feet of flexible banquet and meeting space, a full-service marketplace grocery store, premium and casual restaurants, exciting retail shops, an arcade, a bowling alley and more. Westgate Resorts Founder and CEO David Siegel and Jackie Siegel were all smiles during the momentous
event as public figures from across the city joined them in celebration. Pediatric patients at the Florida Hospital for Children’s outpatient unit enjoyed quite the surprise on December 17th when athletes from the Orlando Predators showed up for an unannounced visit. Quarterback Randy Hippeard and wide receiver Justin Hilton spread holiday cheer and smiles throughout the building by signing autographs, spending quality time with the beautiful children and delivering new children’s movie DVDs to the hospital on behalf of the entire team. Each child and their family also received free tickets to an Orlando Predators game for its upcoming season, which kicks off on March 29th. “It was great to have the opportunity to visit and hang out with the children today,” said Hippeard. “To be able to put a smile on their faces and have the chance to take their minds off of what they’re going through, even if only for a few moments, means a lot. I don’t know who had a better time, the kids or myself !” 2014 proved to be another fantastic & successful year for the city’s leading luxury lifestyle publication, Orlando Style Magazine! As the year came to eventful close, Style Magazine creators, Sven and Cathleen Bode, used the holiday season as a way to share their gratitude and thanks with their staff and close friends. The Bode’s opened up their beautiful new home for a private holiday party featuring attentive staff that served appetizing hors d’oeuvres, Champagne and various fine beverages. Plenty of fun reindeer hats were also provided to help their guests get in the spirit of the season! Everyone mingled around the home while enjoying the great company before meeting on the moonlit terrace for a raffle auction featuring gifts from local Orlando businesses and venues worth over $10,000. A thank you speech by the smiling couple topped off the fantastic evening and led the group into a loud and proud toast to 2015! Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

Lanie Lane’s blues-jazzy voice serenades us as we dine. The dish? Soy and Ginger Tare Glazed Chilean Sea Bass, Forbidden Rice and Scallion Mélange, Sea Beans, and Pickled Fresno Peppers, paired with Grand Vintage Blanc 2006. It’s an intimate atmosphere – fifty to sixty guests in a Hard Rock Hotel ballroom. Tables set with glass plates and stylish silverware, mood lighting and music accompanying each course. Our hosts for the evening are Moet Hennessy Ambassador Kate Hoff and Eric Jenkins, assistant director of food and beverage for Loews Hotels at Universal Orlando. Together they orchestrate a unique, fivecourse wine-pairing dinner, where music, wine, and food rock out. Tonight’s Wine Riffs pairs Moet & Chandon Champagne selections with delicious culinary creations by the hotel’s chefs. “[Wine Riffs] was born two years ago,” Jenkins told me during the reception. It involved throwing around many ideas, whilst drinking lots of wine. The goal was to create a wine-pairing event that was unique to the Hard Rock resort and to the brand. In the end, a wine dinner imbued with music was a natural choice. The Hard Rock would not settle for a boring, too-highbrow dinner either! Wine Riffs is loud, fun, with rock ‘n’ roll celeb elegance. It’s the anti-wine dinner. Thanks to the Vibe Manager, Molly Ford, eclectic music soundtracks tie the meal together, adding to the overall Hard Rock ambience.

Tonight’s event is the fourth Wine Riffs dinner of 2014, with special thanks to Kate Hoff, Moet & Hennessey, and Coastal Wine and Spirits. What makes Wine Riffs worth checking out is that each dinner features different wines, sounds, and plates. No Wine Riffs event is the same! One of the many reasons we had regulars sitting at our table. “Our next Wine Riffs will be held on March 6,” Jenkins said. Guests will imbibe on Argentine wines from Bodega Catena Zapata of Mendoza. Each wine will be paired with a fancy dish to entice the palates, and the Vibe Manager will pick the best soundtracks.

“Amazing” ORLANDO STYLE MAGAZINE Having sampled the truffle deviled eggs and Ahi tuna summer rolls (served with Ice Imperial), tried a chive omelet and poached oyster (paired with Grant Vintage Rose 2004), tasted the unique fusion of seared pistachio crusted scallop, black Italian truffle, and kabocha and ricotta ravioli (paired with Imperial Brut), and still praising the Chilean sea bass dish, guests are now ready to move on to the fourth course: Serrano Wrapped Filet Mignon served with Sautéed Tuscan Kale and Seared Foie Gras, paired with Dom Perignon 2004. The soundtrack for this plate includes music by Lana Del Rey, Sia, and Lorde. After each bubbly is introduced, Hoff narrates a brief story about the Champagne, and Jenkins throws in amusing personal anecdotes. We had a trivia game too! Throughout the evening the lights turned from soft blues to sparkly, when the disco ball in the middle of the room created the illusion that we’re dining amidst floating diamonds.
“Baby One More Time,” by pop princess Britney Spears, opens the evening’s Finale: White chocolate heaven. Overall, it’s a playful atmosphere.

Up until now, Wine Riffs was somewhat of a secret because it was aimed at local audiences. But Hard Rock may be ready to open up a little more. Shoot an email to Molly Ford (mford@loewshotels.com) requesting to add your name to the Wine Riffs list.
And every rock king and queen deserves celeb privileges, right? One of the perks of staying at the Hard Rock is the VIP “Skip the Regular Line” privilege at both Universal Orlando theme parks. Show your room key at one of the designated kiosks to receive your express pass ticket!
Besides curating the Wine Riffs tracks and DJing the dinner, Ford selects and programs all of the music that’s heard throughout the Hard Rock Hotel. From music selection to lighting, she makes sure the vibe is just right at the California mansion-like hotel. At the palm-lined swimming pool, the rock vibe continues as guests enjoy underwater music. The Hard Rock Hotel has 650 deluxe rooms (29 suites), restaurants and lounges, ballrooms … fit for a rock king or queen. The hotel’s Velvet Bar, located by the lobby,

DRESS
1. The Little Black Dress Always a classic goto staple, we’ve got a twist on your favorite black dress. Instead of a tiny bodycon, try a simple black slip dress with a delicate lace hem for a little dose of sexy. Pair it with some lace pumps from Manolo Blahnik and a tailored single-button trench for a sultry but structured finish. If you prefer dresses with more length, try a fitted floor length dress with a thigh-high slit for that alluring “legs for miles” look. A dress of this caliber is best matched with simple white or nude pumps and a textured clutch. 2. Show a Little Skin If you’re feeling dangerous on Valentine’s Day, try a little bralette and a partially sheer top paired with an edgy leather skirt or simple leather shorts for an undeniably edgy datenight outfit. Add some lace and color-block booties for extra height. If short and sheer isn’t your cup of tea, swap out the leather shorts for a pair of fitted leather pants and exchange the sheer top with a pin striped blouse. You’ll still look incredible without feeling uncomfortable. 3. Short and Sweet Black may be a home run on your sexy night out but if you’re feeling like a change, you can’t go wrong with a dainty cream colored dress. Pastel is about as feminine as it gets and with a little added flair at the hem, you’ll look stunning when he picks you up for your big night. Polish this look off with some open toed booties and a colorblock clutch with lace detail.

4 Head-to-toe Looks That Will Knock His Socks Off! By Diane Zeise
Ladies,
retire that tired red dress and put a little umph into your date night ensemble. Now, before you start tossing clothes out of your closet in search of something totally uncharacteristic to wear, hear us out. When primping for Valentine’s Day remember, you’re always most you when you’re comfortable. That being said, let’s discuss some powerful looks that will have you turning heads and dropping jaws wherever you go.

4. Sexy Secretary For an unconventional outfit, try pairing a simple white blouse with a pleated leather midi skirt. You may be showing less skin but you’ll still look like a ten when you finish this look with a simple pair of booties and a structured clutch. If you’re still not done and you want to pump up your outfit, try adding a few belts as accessories, but remember, don’t overdo it. Simpler is always sexier. Finishing Touches & Pro Tips When you’re wearing all black, the beauty is in the detail. Try mixing textures by adding a little lace or leather in the form of a clutch or a belt. Don’t go overboard with the jewelry, either. Your guy wants to look at your face, and a gaudy necklace distracts from that. If you’re dead-set on wearing color on your lips, keep it simple. Try a natural lip but if you’re

dying to wear red, reach for a stain and not the gloss. You don’t want that good night kiss to end in a sticky mess all over his lips.
Lose the bag tonight and stick with the clutch. You don’t want to be toting around a purse when you’re going from dinner to dancing and every stop in between.
Don’t use this night as an opportunity to wear your new sky-high heels unless you’ve practiced walking in them. The last thing you want is to limit your night to sitting or standing because of your footwear. If you’re not comfortable walking in heels, keep it simple with a pair a ballet flats or wedges, which are more comfortable and less difficult to walk in.
Finally, wear your hair down and own your style. No matter what your plans are and what you’re wearing, you’ll always look and feel better when you radiate confidence.

FROM THE GYM TO THE OFFICE
EASY TO REMEMBER, EASY TO ASSEMBLE MEN’S ESSENTIALS By Diane Zeise
keeping the sneaks in the gym bag for another day. Never wear your gnarly running shoes either; update your brand of sneakers if you’re planning on wearing them to work. Try Nike Free, Nike Roshe, New Balance or even Converse Chuck Taylors. Pumas, Eccos and Brooks are always unacceptable in the office.
Whether you’re an avid gym-goer
or ne w to the scene, if you stay up on the latest trends or need some help in the style department, we’ve got you covered with the essentials to car r y you from your early mor ning workout to that mid mor ning meeting. A fast-moving trend that calls for a mix of athletic and business wear to form an appropriate but comfortable look is acceptable for transitioning from the gym to the workplace. While the standard nine-to-five office doesn’t normally classify casual wear as business professional, there are some workplaces that do (depending on your employer). Here are some ways to incorporate both comfort and class, beginning with the essentials.
While we’re on the subject of safe trades let’s discuss our no-no’s. The rules of work wear attire are much more strict than those of casual wear. Don’t wear your dress shoes when you’re pumping iron. Dress shoes are only appropriate with slacks or a suit. If your workplace prefers jeans over sweats, go with a dark wash, fitted pair of jeans with a belt that matches the color of your shoes. Your nice sneakers may be more acceptable and less noticable when paired this way. Pay attention to the length and cut of your work essentials as well. Don’t settle for a poor fit simply because it costs less. What looks good on the manequin may not fit you perfectly. Invest in good tailoring when it comes to suits, slacks and sports coats.
When stepping off the treadmill and into the office, feel free to swap out or add any of your favorite gym essentials to your ready-to-work wear (provided they’re clean and show no signs of wear). Before you do though, think about who you’ll be meeting with today. If you’re about to walk in to a meeting with a bigwig or new client, think about 46

The easiest way to assemble an acceptable business-cas’ outfit is to choose a top and a bottom from the same category and add one or more essentials from the other as accessories. For example: a blazer, button-up and dress pants go great with a pullover or zip up sweater and sneakers. You may also want to try a clean, simple t-shirt with sweats and sneakers. Top this look off with a blazer for an alternative casual-friday outfit. If all else fails, simply stick with one list to avoid workwear faux pas until you feel comfortable enough to start adding juxtaposing detail to your attire. HOW FIVE FAMOUS STARS POPPED THE BIG QUESTION! By Riesa Pascal
‘Tis the season for chocolates and roses! Valentine’s Day—or Single’s Awareness Day depending on whom you ask—is right around the corner. What better way to get you in the romantic spirit of the holiday than by talking about celebrity proposals? If you love a good engagement story, then stayed tuned! We have five of the most expensive, creative, simple, romantic and highly unusual proposals that could have only come from a celebrity’s mind.
MOST EXPENSIVE
KANYE WEST
TO KIM KARDASHIAN When it comes to news regarding the Kardashian family, we’ve all come to expect nothing short of over-the-top. With that in mind, the thought of proposing to the ringleader of the Kardashian pack would probably scare the living daylights out of most men. Fortunately for Kanye West, his wallet size separates him from “most men” and he had no problem going above and beyond to propose to the woman of his dreams. On Kim Kardashian’s 33rd birthday, West rented out San Francisco’s AT&T Park and proposed in front of her close family and friends by flashing “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!” upon the stadium’s massive jumbotron. If that wasn’t enough, West had also rented the Chicago symphony orchestra to play Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” during the proposal. Kardashian’s massive rock came in the form of a 15-carat square diamond ring by the Kardashianfamily-loved jeweler Lorraine Schwartz and is rumored to be worth $8 Million. This May, Kardashian and West will celebrate their one-year anniversary—congrats to the happy couple!

MOST CREATIVE BRADY SMITH TO TIFFANI THIESSEN As an artist, it was only fitting for Brady Smith to incorporate art into his proposal to girlfriend Tiffani Thiessen. In what I easily call the most creative celebrity proposal, Smith decided to hand-illustrate a book in honor of their relationship and presented it to the unsuspecting actress at their San Fernando Valley home. The book chronicled the couple’s time together with adorable illustrations about their life. After giving the gift, Smith dropped to one knee and proposed to his true love and she tearfully accepted. This is hands down one of my favorite proposals on this list because of the thought and time that went into it. Gentlemen, take notes! A memorable proposal doesn’t have to cost you thousands of dollars. Sometimes creativity and personalization can be just as valuable.
THE SIMPLEST PINK TO CAREY HART Time to throw some gender role reversal into the mix! Pink is undoubtedly a little off the wall, so it should come as no surprise that the singer-songwriter asked for her boyfriend’s hand in marriage, not the other way around. Motocross star Carey Hart was entering the third lap of the Mammoth Lakes motocross race when Pink, who was “assisting” in his race, held up a handwritten pit board sign that read “Will you marry me? I’m Serious!” Hart initially didn’t notice and continued on the track for another lap. When he finally did see the sign, Hart immediately veered off the track to accept the proposal right then and there. Pink then made him finish the race because she refused to marry a loser.
MOST ROMANTIC DEAN MCDERMOTT TO TORI SPELLING Dean McDermott might have seen one too many Disney films because his proposal to Tori Spelling was something straight out of a fairytale. The Canadian actor took Spelling on a horse-drawn carriage ride through a Toronto Christmas tree farm on Christmas Eve. For half a mile, McDermott and Spelling traveled through the lit trees, which led to a table for two, surrounded by beautifully decorated Christmas trees. There McDermott proposed to Spelling with a sapphire and diamond ring. The couple wed the following May (who could’ve said no to that proposal?), but McDermott was far from finished with his grand romantic gestures. The next Christmas, McDermott proposed again! As he told People, “We sat on a bench overlooking the lake and I gave Tori her last Christmas present. I’d wrapped the ring in a much bigger box, and as soon as she opened the ring box I asked her to marry me again. It was very romantic and magical.” How adorable!

“If Seal was going for the award of Most Unusual— or Most Freezing—proposal, he and Klum have won by a landslide...or maybe I should say an avalanche.”

NOTTING HILL (1999) Anna (to William): “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” 5. DIRTY DANCING (1987) Baby (to Johnny): “I’m scared of everything. MOST UNUSUAL
SEAL TO HEIDI KLUM Though the couple has since split, Seal’s proposal to Heidi Klum was definitely memorable and extremely unusual. On December 23rd, Seal popped the question and took his beautiful model girlfriend away to the Rockies via helicopter for a special surprise he had prepared just for the moment. The helicopter left them atop a mountain in Whistler, British Columbia at 14,000 feet. There he had ordered a private igloo be made just for the two of them in a natural snow cave in uncharted terrain on a glacier. The igloo was pre-decorated in roses and candles and stocked with Champagne and a delicious meal for two. If Seal was going for the award of Most Unusual—or Most Freezing—proposal, he and Klum have won by a landslide...or maybe I should say an avalanche.

MEGHAN TRAINOR America’s Unexpected Pop Sensation By Courtney Caggiano
With the summer’s
biggest breakout hit, Meghan Trainor has become one of America’s most unexpected pop stars, but Trainor herself was the last to expect how far her debut single would take her. At the tender age of 21, Trainor has made a name for herself in the music industry with the immediate success of her summer smash, “All About That Bass,” a catchy, retro-inspired anthem with a bubblegum exterior that carries a message much deeper than the average pop number. This song, which began as an expression of Trainor’s desire for curvy girls to appreciate their figures, has exploded into a cultural phenomenon. From its release on June 30th, “All About That Bass” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks, climbed the charts internationally in countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, and has gained accolades from the status of “Song of the Summer” to Grammy nominations. Although this success has taken Trainor on quite a fast journey to critical acclaim, it has also taken her by surprise. The Nantucket, Massachusetts’ native, who had always wanted a career in the music world, had high hopes of being a songwriter, but not a pop sensation. Trainor has been writing songs since she was 11 years old, and after years

of developing her craft, moved to Nashville at age 19. While working for different artists and publishers, Trainor cut her own songs as well as co-writes with Nashville-based bands such as country group Rascal Flatts. In early 2014, she met Grammynominated producer Kevin Kadish, with whom she collaborated on songwriting projects, which eventually resulted in the co-write of “All About That Bass.” While Trainor and her publishers believed that there would be several artists at their door, interested in cutting her new record, she was faced with much confusion as to where this song would lead her. A number of labels gave Trainor’s song a chance, but they did not know of an existing artist whose voice would pair well with the tune. To Trainor’s excitement, L.A. Reid of Epic Records thought the songwriter’s own voice fitted “All About That Bass” perfectly, and a week later, Trainor was auditioning for his label. With a record deal with one hand and a hit song in the other, Trainor began to realize that she was on her way to achieving a career as not only a songwriter, but also an established artist with her own image and a voice to match. In September, Trainor debuted her first EP, which reached number fifteen on the Billboard 200 Chart. The popularity of this EP’s digital release resulted in Trainor’s 2014 American Music Award nomination for New Artist of the Year. The second single from Title, “Lips Are Movin,” was a smart choice for Trainor to help keep her footing in the pop genre. As a catchy follow-up to “All About That Bass,” this song carried all the mod flair of Trainor’s first single while showing off her bold opinions and fresh musical sensibilities. “Lips Are Movin” hit contemporary radio on October 21st, and Trainor announced that this would be the lead single from her upcoming full-length album. Although Trainor’s songs celebrate her confident spirit and youthful tongue-in-cheek attitude, this self-confidence did not come as quickly as the singer’s instant celebrity status. When she first started filming music videos and singing in live performances, Trainor began to see her imperfections, along with her celebrated attributes. However, Trainor realized that in order to truly live out the songs she had written for her audience, she needed to embrace these imperfections. Trainor will be the first to admit that she is not the usual pop star, as she does not have a stick-figure frame or songs that emphasize the importance of one’s outward appearance. However, Trainor’s image has allowed her to become the spokeswoman for girls of all sizes, reminding a variety of young women of their unique and individual beauty. Today, Trainor’s self-assurance is well deserved, as she is set to release her first highly publicized studio album. The album, Title, is a compilation of songs that define the girl Trainor has become throughout her journey as a singer-songwriter. Eager to share her experiences with her fans, Trainor hopes to relate her happy-golucky spirit and carefree confidence with her listeners. With the album’s January release, Trainor has kicked off her 2015 with a running start. Beginning February 11th, Trainor will take her hit singles and killer performances throughout the United States on her first North American concert spree, That Bass Tour. With Trainor’s brand new album and a tour that is selling out as quickly as her fame is growing, it seems that we have much to expect from this unexpected American sweetheart.

the month of flowers, chocolate, romance and all things red. This is also the month of the biggest dating faux pas in the book. From forgetting the big day, (yes we’re talking V-Day) to buying your mom flowers and forgetting your lady, from showing up late to not showing up at all, from over playing the date to playing it too cool, here are some serious “oops” moments to avoid and some moves to ensure you’ll have a killer Valentine’s Day.
GENTS, LISTEN UP! DON’T forget it’s Valentine’s Day! Make sure to have a reminder set on your phone. Do be creative! Ladies don’t want a generic, sappy Hallmark card that a million other people will receive on the same day as well. DON’T give her a ring if it’s not “the ring”! Do dress up for your date. Don’t show up in jeans and flip-flops. Let your date know you put effort into your appearance.
60 STYLETOME.COM
DON’T check your phone every other minute! Listen to what your date is saying. Do watch a chick flick with her. DON’T talk about your ex. Do compliment her and tell her how you’re feeling. DON’T buy clothes or lingerie unless you know her exact size. Do cook for her. Make her a candlelit dinner or surprise her with breakfast in bed. DON’T over spend. Be reasonable with your gift giving. But, do have flowers delivered to her workplace.
LADIES, HEAR ME OUT! DON’T be depressed if you’re single! It’s not a national single awareness day, no matter what you think. Do Plan a girls’ night out, dress sexy, and have a cocktail with the friends you love.
RECLINING OFFICE CHAIR LIZA EXECUTIVE RECLINER LAFER
DON’T make your man stress over Valentine’s Day. This is just one day, don’t have unrealistic expectations for him. Help him out a little and do take charge and pick the date location! Your man will be sure to appreciate your decisiveness on where to eat for once. DON’T overdo your appearance. Look naturally and effortlessly sexy! Caked-on makeup and too much perfume make for a night he won’t want to remember. Do pay attention to what he’s said in the past. If he’s mentioned your “hot jeans”, pair them with a smokin’ pair of pumps and a simple blouse. Wear your hair down and avoid the clubbing clothes. You’re dressing for him tonight, not for other men.
$2,769.00 (reg price) Previously enjoyed, excellent condition: $850
Pre-Owned Certified PREVIOSLY ENJOYED HIGH-END FURNITURE IN LIKE NEW CONDITION FOR THOSE WHO LIKE TO SAVE A LOT.
DON’T be on your phone, either. If you expect him to be engaged make sure he knows you want to be there too. Your girlfriends can wait. This day is as much about him as it is about you. Do make note, men can’t read our minds. Let him know what you want! DON’T emasculate him on this day with cutesy presents. Avoid plush bears and homemade t-shirts with an oversized photo of the two of you. Instead, write him a letter, telling him how proud of him you are. Do brag about your date. His confidence will be boosted once he knows how much you notice.

The Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort and Spa is located right on the corner of fun and relaxation in the heart of South Florida. Home to Fort Lauderdale’s largest stretch of private beach, the resort’s oceanfront location and close proximity to the airport presents you with the perfect getaway from the stresses of day-to-day life. My stay at the gorgeous property was just three short days, but in that time I was able to experience enough of the luxurious resort to know that this is what a vacation was meant to be. Spacious guest rooms with private oceanfront balconies provided breathtaking views of the sparkling sea. A 22,000 square foot spa offered high-quality treatments and top-notch facilities designed to bring you to the ultimate state of rest and relaxation. The lavish beach resort boasts 16 picturesque waterfront acres and is one of only a handful resorts in the area with its own private beach. Conveniently located on that same private beach is Aloha Watersports. From parasail flights that take guests soaring into the sky to action packed WaveRunner rides and leisurely sailing trips, Aloha is the only place to be when you’re looking for unique and exciting ocean adventures that launch directly from Harbor Beach Marriott’s private beach. Numerous water sports were available through the staff at the Aloha hut and my companions and I wasted no time in taking advantage of them during an hour that passed by all too quickly. I went with kayaking for my activity of choice while others in my group chose to paddleboard. Together we made our way out on the deep blue for a memorable time that was both enjoyable and relaxing. On another special afternoon we had the opportunity to experience Fort Lauderdale’s pristine waters once again in an incredibly unique way that would go on to become the highlight of my trip.
“Top-notch facilities designed to bring you to the ultimate state of rest and relaxation.” With over 100 marinas housing 45,000 resident yachts, Fort Lauderdale is famously known as the Venice of America. In order to fully appreciate the city’s beautiful canals and waterways, a boat tour was in order with Gondolas West Natural River Cruises. The tour, inspired by the Gondola rides of Venice, Italy, travels through the Intracoastal Waterway that surrounds Greater Fort Lauderdale. My companions and I boarded Captain Chris’ 22-foot boat and set sail for a magical tour of the multi-million dollar yachts and extravagant mansions along Millionaire’s Row. The small capacity boat

provided privacy and comfort while allowing our group to reach some of the more intimate sites where larger tour boats are unable to get to. As the sun set over the peaceful waters, there was nothing to be heard but the light splashing of water meeting boat, the laughter of quality conversation and the occasional “oohs and ahhs” associated with the magnificent mansions. It was a true, rare moment of experiencing nature over noise. I relished in the light breeze on my face while sipping on chilled wine and continuing to experience the beautiful waterways on nature’s terms. After the Gondola ride, we found ourselves just minutes away from Fort Lauderdale’s famous Las Olas Boulevard and it was immediately apparent that a stroll through the quaint shopping district was in order! After passing numerous boutiques, elegant shops and fine restaurants, our growling stomachs eventually led us to the local neighborhood spot Sweet Nectar Charcoal Grill & Spirits. From beginning to end, dining at Sweet Nectar was nothing short of a mouthwatering experience. With a specialty in meals designed for sharing, Sweet Nectar was the perfect spot to enjoy a vast array of delightful foods and handcrafted drinks with friends. For an equally memorable dinner on a separate night, my companions and I ended up at Fork and Balls located just a short walk away from Sweet Nectar. Their one-of-a-kind, meatball-driven menu brings
something positively fresh and unique to traditional dining. It was beyond difficult to pick just one item off the Fork and Balls menu brimming with all types of innovative combinations of meatballs. When in doubt, simply go with their daily special as I did. No matter what you choose from their everevolving menu, you’re guaranteed to leave full and satisfied. Despite over 4,000 satisfying dining options available throughout Fort Lauderdale, the Harbor Beach Marriott has all your bases covered if you’re the type of vacationer that doesn’t want to leave the property to find great food. Over the course of my stay, I was able to enjoy two of the three restaurants that span the beach resort and guarantee guests don’t feel left out when it comes to fine dining experiences. Sea Level proved to be the ideal spot for casual oceanside dining on the region’s freshest seafood, choice cuts of meat and the highest-quality produce. Also located at the resort was the upscale, awardwinning 3030 Ocean. There we experienced fine dining at Fort Lauderdale’s most elegant restaurant without ever stepping foot off property. Fort Lauderdale is famous for its beaches, arts, culture and events. Tourists to the Sunshine State already know this and flock to the area year after year. conveniently close to where we call home. Perhaps you’re like me and tend to think a vacation should involve traveling outside of your state. If that’s you today, I challenge you to redefine your definition of what a vacation has to be. Travel down south to the Venice of America and let the city of Fort Lauderdale welcome you with sunshine and open arms as it did for me. From high intensity water sports to free jazz on the historic riverfront, you’ll be hard pressed to run out of activities to do in this beautiful city. When it comes to accommodations, I’d also encourage you to come and experience what the Harbor Beach Marriott has to offer. Whether it’s an annual girls getaway, a long overdue family vacation or even just a private weekend away from home, the only way to compliment a vacation to one of the number one tourist spots in the nation is to stay at one of the largest and most luxurious hotel chain in the world for that ideal blend of comfort and class. J U L I E T D. B U R R Y, M . D . PA I N M A N AG E M E N T I N S T I T U T E A N D A E S T H E T I C S Aside from pain management, Dr. Burry pursued training in aesthetics and has developed a growing aesthetic practice focusing on techniques that are affordable and require little to no downtime, including microneedling, microdermabrasion, dermal fillers, and light chemical peels, along with skin care lines that utilize the rejuvenating ability of growth hormone. “I found that once patients begin to feel better they want to look as good as they feel.” Microneedling has the ability to dramatically improve acne scars, hyper pigmentation, minimize pores, soften fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall tone and texture by stimulating the skin’s natural ability to repair itself.
Juliet D. Burry, M.D. is a board certified anesthesiologist with a subspecialty board certification in pain management through the American Board of Anesthesiology. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree with high honors then her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Because of her interest in relieving the suffering of others, Dr. Burry then chose to complete her fellowship in the subspecialty of pain management at Moffitt Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute, in Tampa, FL in order to have depth and breadth of knowledge of all types of pain syndromes including cancer-related pain. Dr. Burry is a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, American Association of Orthopaedic Physicians, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists as well as the local county medical society chapters and the Florida Medical Association.
As a native Floridian from south Florida, Dr. Burry loves the beach and the outdoors. She is a bibliophile and a Bossa Nova fanatic! She enjoys traveling abroad, dancing the Rumba, gardening, and is a member of the French American Business Council of Orlando. She and her dog, Savannah, enjoy being members of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club where Savannah meets other Cavaliers. Dr. Burry is also a member of the Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic. “The pursuit of artistic expression reminds us of our humanity, even our divinity. In an industry that has become more and more about finances, I believe physicians are in a unique position to rise above this and support that which edifies the individual and the community. Having come from a musical family, supporting the Orlando Philharmonic was completely natural.”
Dr. Burry opened her medical practice here in Orlando, FL in 2007 with the intent of bringing compassionate and innovative care to the specialty of pain management, with a focus on decreasing each patient’s pain and its impact on their personal and professional life. Dr. Burry achieves this by introducing the patient to a complete program of individualized pain control techniques to help advance functional ability, improve emotional well-being, and optimize quality of life. With her background in pharmacy, Dr. Burry has developed her practice to integrate medication management with image guided, minimally invasive procedures to achieve a rapid reduction in pain and a prompt return to regular activities. “There are many potential problems and complications with pain management when using medications. My background in pharmacy and knowledge of pharmaceuticals has allowed me to more effectively treat my patients.” Innovation is important and there have been many changes in the specialty of pain management in the past decade. Dr. Burry is committed to bringing new techniques to Orlando including adult stem cell therapy which is a non-surgical, minimally invasive technique for pain caused by joint, tendon or ligament problems as an alternative to surgery. This new technique harnesses the immune system’s capacity for healing by utilizing the patient’s own stem cells. Performed in the office, this procedure has changed the lives of many patients who would otherwise live with significant disability. While previously only available to professional athletes, adult stem cell therapies for orthopaedic problems is now available to the lay public.

LAND ROVER ORLANDO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF SERVICE. It’s always refreshing to meet people who still believe that family and service are words to live by. Land Rover Orlando is part of the Fields Auto Group family, and treating customers like members of the family has been a Fields priority since they first opened their doors in Florida in 1989. Now celebrating their 25th anniversary in the Sunshine State, Land Rover Orlando is one of 14 Fields locations throughout Central Florida. Ask anyone at Land Rover Orlando and they’ll tell you the secret to their success and growth comes down to commitment — commitment to building long-term relationships with customers and a genuine dedication to the community. Loyal customers will point out the unmistakable family atmosphere, too. Fields first started in Chicago in 1971 and, to this day, the company remains family-owned. When you purchase a vehicle from Land Rover Orlando, you really do become a member of the Fields family. You are automatically enrolled in the Fields Matters Amenities Program, which includes complimentary car washes, free service loaners, a gourmet ice cream and coffee bar, children’s play area, invitations to special events and a great deal more. Obviously, such a unique brand of automotive and customer service hasn’t gone unnoticed. Along with lasting appreciation and repeat business, Land Rover Orlando has been winning awards as well. They are a multi-year recipient of Land Rover’s Pinnacle Club Award for their commitment to excellence in sales and service. The evaluation was based on customer satisfaction, sales performance and staff
training. Land Rover Orlando also was named No. 1 Reader’s Choice among car dealers by Orlando Style Magazine. A strong and committed sales staff, with many years’ experience in exceeding customer expectations, plays a huge role in garnering all the accolades. Experts at helping you find the exact vehicle you want, the Fields team is also dedicated to helping contribute to their community. Their charitable initiative has benefited a number of national and local organizations, such as the United Way, the American Heart Association, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Land Rover Orlando is also a presenting sponsor for the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital fundraising efforts. properties so I was exposed at an early age to the property management and real estate investment portfolios. In 2007 my mom urged me to get my real estate licensure. She said I had a gift for speaking to people and that people were naturally drawn towards me. I said, “really?” Haha. I took her suggestion. Since that point, my passion was found and I’ve never looked back. Q: What sets you apart from other realtors? A: I received a full scholarship to wrestle at Old Dominion University. I take the same determination and hard work ethic with real estate. I know that I want my clients to be winners and happy. There is no room for second place for me. I have always had that “go-getter” and the “pursuit of perfection” mentality. Negotiating in real estate is vital and I want to make sure I always push the limits to get my clients the best deal. I reside downtown so I live the lifestyle of what I sell and offer. Q: What do you do when your not showing property or working?

A: My mother, Juanita Jimenez was a successful Realtor in Norfolk, Virginia. One day when I was 15 years old I vividly remember riding in the back seat with her to preview homes with a client. I always was fascinated on how every home had its own personality. My mother’s goal was always to match a person’s style with a unique home. A: My life is spontaneous. Usually, I’m at the Gym first thing in the morning or taking a run around Lake Eola Downtown. After that, Ill probably sip on some green tea and go with the flow. I enjoy just chilling at my high-rise pool and reading or grilling out. I love getting away to our beautiful beaches here in Florida. I prefer the gulf side like Naples or Siesta Key. South Beach if I need a long weekend! I like going to social and networking events to meet new people and clients, spending time with friends and family and eating in one of Orlando’s many restaurants. I do have my cell phone on during all of this so I’m not sure If I’m 100% not working... (he laughs as his cell phone vibrates)

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
SUBVERTING LIBERTY BY OVER-CRIMINALIZATION - BY MARK L. HORWITZ
Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St. Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407.843.7733 F: 407.849.1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
The expansion of prosecutions and over-criminalization of conduct has taken on two principal forms; one is laws that do not require criminal intent and second is prosecutors expanding criminal statutes beyond the intended purpose. The expression “Don’t make a federal case out of it” has been ignored all too often by both federal prosecutors and Congress. Two examples are worth mentioning. Federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania charged Carol Bond with violating the Chemical Weapons Convention Implementation Act which forbids a person from possessing or using any chemical weapon. Ms. Bond discovered that her husband had an affair and used readily available chemicals to inflict minor injuries to the “other” woman. The chemical caused minor burning sensations and was easily washed off with water. Ms. Bond was sentenced to six years in prison and could have been sentenced to life. In comparison, the state charged Ms. Bond with a minor offense based on harassing phone calls and letters. The United States Supreme Court reversed the federal conviction, writing “the global need to prevent chemical warfare does not require the Federal Government to reach into the kitchen cupboard, to treat a local assault with a chemical irritant as the development of a chemical weapon.” The federal prosecutors were stretching the criminal law beyond reason.
In Michigan, federal prosecutors charged a defendant with forced labor of children, a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The defendant provided a home for 4 of his wife’s young relatives. They lived together as a family. The children were required to do household chores, as well as schoolwork. The defendant worked two jobs and also did yard work to support the family. The defendant imposed punishment on the children that was deemed abusive, for not doing their chores and homework. The federal prosecutors convicted the defendant of a forced labor charge. The court of appeals reversed, noting that the statute used by the prosecutors would make a federal crime out of widely accepted parental rights such as requiring children to help in the home and do schoolwork. Discipline of a child that is too severe is a matter for the state, not the federal government. The over-criminalization of conduct is a danger to liberty. We must stay ever vigilant as citizens, voters, and jurors to prevent the passage of laws that allow convictions for conduct that a person would not know is criminal and prevent expanding laws beyond their intended reach.

WHY WOULD I BUY
MY INSURANCE FROM A DUCK?
THE CURIOSITIES OF CAR INSURANCE… By Mark NeJame
Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law
assistance by a live agent or an online forum pushing you through to the next question. Do you decline uninsured motorist coverage, yes or no? Well, you think, what gives me the lowest rate? Think again. Risks are taken every time you get behind the wheel, and obtaining the right coverage is a numbers game. Here is a “crash course” on the basics of car insurance in Florida: UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE provides coverage for the victim of an auto accident if they are injured by an uninsured motorist. Essentially, your company simply steps in and acts like it is the liability insurance company of the person who negligently injured you. UM applies only to bodily injury and not property damage. You must obtain separate coverage for property damage. A $10,000/$20,000 UM policy means that the UM carrier will compensate injured persons up to $10,000 per person or $20,000 per accident for all injured parties involved. Florida has an extremely high rate of uninsured motorists, so it is NOT advised to decline UM insurance.
The GEICO Gecko,
Mayhem at Allstate, Flo at Progressive, the Aflac Duck… the genius behind insurance marketing certainly has its effect: consumers spend more time picking which insurance company to sign up with, than what policy to sign up for. Specifically, these marketing efforts focus on pushing the lowest rates for car insurance, and they’re coming at us from all angles: “We were the first to sell insurance online, and now we believe that mobile is a game changer. So, instead of just TV commercials, we started integrating her into video games like Sims Social; we created 7 smart phone apps; we produced an animated YouTube video, created by Beavis & Butthead animator J.J. Sedelmaier; and we got a lot more aggressive with social media, where we now have over 4 million fans on Facebook.” says Progressive’s CFO Jeff Charney in an interview with Forbes.
PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION (PIP) insurance covers you, your family members, and individuals in the event of crash with injuries. PIP coverage applies to all qualified individuals regardless of fault, otherwise known as Florida’s “no fault” insurance. Everyone’s auto insurance policy must contain a minimum coverage of $10,000.00 PIP. If you did not cause the accident, your premiums should not rise unless you have been in multiple accidents within a certain period of time.
But what difference does it make to us? Don’t we get the same coverage offered regardless of whether we like the gecko or the duck better?
BODILY INJURY LIABILITY (BIL) insurance is not required in Florida. This insurance covers liabilities you may have for causing an accident, such as someone else’s medical expenses and funeral costs. You will carry higher premiums if you elect BIL, but your personal liability in the event of an accident is protected up to the amount of your coverage.
It can be confusing, and to make matters worse, there seems to be a lack of guidance as to what policy is right for you. Speaking as a consumer myself, the sign-up process has an effortless “Flo” to it, whether it’s

STACKED UNINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE means that you multiply the amount of UM coverage by the number of vehicles covered under your policy to determine the amount of coverage. Let’s say you have 2 cars in a single policy, each with $25,000.00/50,000.00 UM limits, and you decide to stack these coverages. Your coverage limits for each vehicle will be $50,000/$150,000 (2x the original policy amount) instead of your original $25,000/$50,000. Without stacking, your UM/UIM limits are capped at your liability limits. Stacking your UM coverage in an amount equal to your BIL coverage is always a good idea. This option is usually not much more in premium charges and can dramatically increase your coverage. Stacking also protects your relatives that live with you and you if you are on a motorcycle. Our cars, houses, health and wealth are constantly changing. I’ve done some finger-wagging about this before: review all insurance policies, retirement accounts and estate planning documents annually! Car insurance policies may seem innocuous, but the wrong policy in a bad situation can put you and your family in dire straights. So go ahead, informed consumers, call the lizard and shake him down for the best policy… because now you know what you’re talking about.

WANT TO START THE NEW YEAR TIRED, & SNORE THROUGH ANOTHER YEAR? THEN DON’T READ THIS TESTIMONIAL! Snoring is the vibration of
respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructive air movement
during breathing while sleeping. Snoring can be a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea but not everyone who snores has the sleep disorder. Here is a testimonial from a patient I treated with an oral sleep appliance: I am a Board Certified Physician. My schedule is extremely demanding and has me working all hours of the day and night. As a result, my sleep is not regular, nor would I consider it in line with good, healthy sleep. As a result, I snore quite loudly so much that it affects my sleep and those around me. The SomnoMed Oral Sleep Appliance was suggested to me by Dr. Carl Bilancione, Cosmetic and Comprehensive Dentistry. I put it in when I lie down; it protrudes my jaw slightly, thus causing a more anatomically open airway. It is not uncomfortable to wear and built to the alignment of my mouth. The process to make the molds takes about 30 minutes-no more time than a regular dental appointment. There is absolutely no work involved. The process is extremely comfortable. What I have noticed is a more restful sleep. I wake up refreshed no matter what my schedule. Further, my family is less affected by my snoring-which, is all but gone. This device allows the patient’s airway to remain anatomically open while you sleep. It can decrease snoring as well as assist those with the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. While it is not a cure, those with limited symptoms can greatly improve their lives. I encourage you to see if the SomnoMed Oral Sleep Appliance is appropriate for you.
In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

Find or install a perch by a window where your cat can watch the birds. For those cats that pine to be outdoors, the marketplace has an abundance of outdoor enclosures that also allows cats to run, roam and prance freely in the invigorating fresh air. Of course, moderate the time spent in these enclosures based on inclement weather conditions. For both dogs and cats, keep a set of toys and laser pointer handy for an energized and sustained play session, either indoors or out, at least once daily. When outdoor play just isn’t an option, there are a number of motorized animal treadmills on the market today that are entirely enjoyable and effective for exercising both Fido and Felix.
Like humans, pets can experience winder doldrums. Even those living
in warmer weather regions are still affected by seasonal changes, which can be especially tough on dogs and cats--particularly those that are used to spending time outdoors. Beyond the obvious challenge of pets getting less exercise during the winter months, dogs and cats often experience less emotional stimulation during this period and can suffer a variety of adversities, including excessive weight gain, irritability, anxiety and even clinical depression. This can lead to a variety of unsavory behaviors and dissatisfaction for all involved. The more outdoor-oriented the pet, the higher probability that these and other problems will present and persist through the season. Fortunately, there are a few simple things pet owners can do to physically engage and psychologically stimulate their pets and make everyone happier during the cooler winter months. FETCH! Pet Care CEO, Paul Mann, offers these suggestions: INDOOR & OUTDOOR EXERCISE
COUNTING CALORIES
Most dog breeds need to go outside 2-3 times a day, not only to relieve themselves, but also to get some form of exercise and sensory stimulation. Dogs are more likely to go outside in nearly any kind of weather and often love a romp in the rain. Taking your dog outdoors will trigger its natural play instincts. Running, jumping and chasing are natural ways to energize your pet, burn calories and boost metabolism. If you’re not up to the task amid Mother Nature, consider hiring a professional dog walker to happily take on the duty. Indoors, triedand-true games like fetch, tug-of-war and wrestling can also serve as a great workout that also stimulates a pet’s appetite.
If your dog or cat doesn’t get outdoors as much in the winter as they normally do, it likely doesn’t need to eat as much food. Reducing food and calorie intake generally means less weight gain and more energy. If you often give your pets treats, consider hiding them inside toys, such as freezing kibble inside a “Kong,” to give them prolonged busy work. As with humans, weight maintenance is all about portion control. Feed your pet using a designated measuring cup so that you know exactly how much food they’re consuming each day. If you still aren’t getting the desired results, call the pet food company for dietary 106

recommendations to ensure you aren’t over-feeding—especially as seasonal dietary requirements change when a pet becomes less active. Automated pet feeding systems are also helpful. These tech tools utilize a wireless tag attached to a pet’s collar to regulate and monitor one or more pet’s food intake to ensure the pet isn’t eating too much or too little at once or throughout the day—also keeping multiple pets away from each other’s food. LET THERE BE LIGHT Pets react to illumination just like humans do. Their energy level increases when the light is brighter. According to Animal Behavior College, “The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals found that approximately 40 percent of dog owners saw a considerable downturn in their pet’s moods during the winter months” and that related symptoms in pets “typically manifest as behavioral changes such as inappropriate soiling, aggression, lethargy and separation anxiety.” The report notes that “Light is intimately tied to the functioning of the pituitary and endocrine glands, and can stimulate the body to release hormones that have an uplifting effect on mood.” If it’s too cold, windy or wet to go out, simply open the drapes and let the natural light in, turn up your indoor lights, and consider replacing bulbs with the full spectrum or daylight variety to better simulate a daytime environment. A company called Pawsitive Lighting, has even developed a light box to help conquer those wintertime blues.

For cats that respond well to catnip, there are catnip and other “play sprays” that can be squirted onto indoor climbing structures, cardboard boxes, and scratching posts. A multistory cat climber or “tree” with strategically placed low-cal treats or scented play toys can readily get kitty jumping from level to level and its heart pumping in kind. With just a little planning, you can help ensure your pet’s winter season remains happy and healthy, with a great quality of life for everyone in the household.
