PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, Let’s talk about time thieves. Maybe you’ve never heard about them. Even so, I’m sure that every one of you have encountered them here and there. Time thieves come in all shapes and sizes. Time is one of the most precious things to have, and with getting older, we know that as time goes on, it gets even more precious. As we begin the summer season, I decided to make a list of my top 5 time thieves: 1) The Internet… of course. I always find that time is flying so much when I am looking for something or researching something, and in our business, this is certainly a common practice. Hours go by without you even noticing it! 2) People who just don’t want to let you go… and you know what I mean. There is a reason why they’re called ex’s. 3) Social media… I’m sure you have this time thief in your life! The younger audience may not mind, but the ones in my age do. We seem to use social media as a distraction, but sometimes it distracts us a little too much… Sven with Mother and fist son Anthony

4) People who start arguing when they think they are right, when evidence is clear that they are not—I call them the “energy vampires” who drain you from your vitality. 5) TV … especially the primetime shows that try to hold us on from episode to episode. Does it offer us anything? To some it might, but I doubt it. ...and there are more. Time is so precious, so why not use it the way you want it? Time spent reading a magazine is a good example. You can read when you like and where you like—outdoors, indoors, in the airplane—and whenever you have a few moments to wind down. It’s relaxing and informative, and you might be surprised by what you see on the next page, which we hear all the time from our readers about Orlando Style. Also, don’t forget to spend some time with or think about the most wonderful person who brought you into this wonderful world: your mom. Be sure to make her Mother’s Day very special this month. And, to my beautiful wife Cathleen, who is celebrating her first Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day!! Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode Publisher

Disney Dream SET SAIL ON AN UNFORGETTABLE VOYAGE WHERE DREAMS REALLY DO COME TRUE!

20 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

By Cathleen K. Bode

Disney Dream is the second newest ship in

the Disney flotilla with a maiden voyage date of January 26th, 2011. Five years later, the awardwinning Disney Dream’s elegant combination of timeless beauty and contemporary luxury is still taking adults, children and families on an unforgettable Disney adventure. My own adventure aboard the Disney Dream was a relaxing and whimsical three-day experience that I shared with my father and sister. With 14 decks, 1,250 staterooms and the ability to comfortable carry 4,000 passengers, the magnificent ship welcomed us with the grandest of splendor and a beautiful promise of the extraordinary journey to come. The powerful sound of the Disney Dream horn— which plays familiar Disney tunes, such as “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “It’s a Small World”—marked the beginning of our voyage as we set sail across the ocean blue. Knowing Disney Dream was designed with families in mind, we expected nothing short of a wonderful weekend overflowing with relaxation, fun and intense splashes of classic Disney magic at every corner. Our Verandah stateroom, a lavish accommodation designed for families of three to five, was built with the finest construction and décor. The private, spacious quarters left us with ample room to relax and enjoy with floor to ceiling glass doors overlooking the expanse of the blue sea. Our private verandah allowed us to share laughter and conversation whilst breathing in the fresh, salty air and viewing the most magnificent sunsets. However, every passenger knows that the real

fun happens outside of the staterooms! Unlike other cruises, which strongly cater to the desires of adults and can often treat children’s activities as an afterthought, Disney Dream is home to a variety of thrilling activities for every age and personality to partake in. Infants and toddlers can play with toys and games at It’s A Small World Nursery while older children will delight in Disney’s Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club. There they can choose between six themed experiences that allow them to exercise, problem solve, connect with their peers, create, imagine and much more. At Edge, young tweens can enjoy everything from wacky science experiments to improv comedy training. Meanwhile, teenagers at Vibe can look forward to exciting cooking classes, a Disney “Dating” game and much more Disney Dream fun. But the entertainment doesn’t stop with the children and it’s not always “dry fun” either. All ages will have a splashing good time on Disney Dream’s “AquaDuck”, the first water coaster at sea. The 765-foot long waterslide with a four-deck drop winds 13feet over the edge of the ship and through the ship’s forward funnel. While Disney Dream also features a variety of family-friendly pools and hot tubs, the calming Quiet Cove pool and bar proved to be a popular hangout spot for many adults who desired relaxation without the flurry of playing children. In keeping up with Disney tradition and their family-centric atmosphere, every day on Disney Dream is a day packed with activities and offerings for those families looking forward to spending quality time together. At Buena

Vista Theatre, an elegant cinema that shows first-run movies and digital 3D films, we kicked back and enjoyed a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. From animated Disney films to intense adventure flicks, their impressive selection of movies proved suitable for every member of any family. Equally stunning aboard the ship was The Walt Disney Theatre, a exquisite live-performance venue where we witnessed spectacular Broadway-caliber Disney shows in the luxury of a charming theatre. Each night featured a different performance with two show times to choose from. The theatre kicked off the cruise with a showing of the timeless Disney tribute, “The Golden Mickeys.” The following evening was full of laughter during “Villains Tonight!”, a comedy show featuring the Disney Villains. On Sunday, hearts were warmed with the theatre’s final show, “Disney’s Believe” which saw beloved Disney characters take a father on a magical journey to show him that anything is possible. In spite of all the fun, even adults need a little relaxation and Disney Dream had just the remedy with Senses Spa & Salon where passengers can experience elegant spa and high-end salon services with an expansive ocean view. At Senses, my sister and I indulged in the Spa Rainforest Room

where we experienced ultimate relaxation in a thermal suite, which included a whirlpool, aroma steam room, sauna and water therapy. For extra sensory perfection, we even tried the Rainforest Scrub Experience, a customdesigned body polish to slough away dead skin in the Rainforest sensory showers. Senses’ private jacuzzi overlooking the turquoise sea was the perfect place to relax after a massage and warming lounge chairs made for an ideal spot to read a book or catch a snooze. Open daily, the facilities also offer Couples Spa Villas, a traditional barber shop, teeth whitening, acupuncture treatments, a separate Chill Spa for teens and much more. As with any cruise, shopping is a must while on board and Disney Dream makes it incredibly easy with a wonderful selection of delightful shops selling everything from Disney-inspired diamond jewelry by Sophia Fiori to beautiful Disney art and giclée prints on canvas. At Vanellope’s Sweets and Treats, there’s even shopping to satisfy the sweet tooth in all of us! There passengers can have their fill of assorted candy, delectable treats and handmade gelato and ice cream. With so much to do aboard the Disney Dream, it’s easy to forget about the adventures that await at the docking locations, but we were quickly reminded as we made our first stop. Saturday morning we were welcomed 22 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

to Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas. After docking, we were greeted at the vibrant port with seemingly endless opportunities for adventure and fun. Bay Street is the main shopping street in downtown Nassau, and it runs parallel to the shoreline. Dozens of stores were open for us to browse through various goodies from touristy T-shirts to the famous Bahamian rum cakes and everything else you can think of. Before docking, passengers even had the opportunity to safely book amazing port adventures through Disney Dream such as day trips to Atlantis, Blue Lagoon Island and snorkeling along the soft, golden-sandy beaches of the Bahamas. In stark contrast to the big city buzz of Nassau, our second stop was Castaway Cay, Disney’s private port-of-call paradise. Bright and early Sunday morning we docked on this pristine island for a beautiful day of tropical leisure activities. My family and I opted for the Castaway Cay Getaway Package that included a day’s use of both snorkeling equipment and inflatable floats as well as an hour long bike rental, which was perfect for a riding tour through the picturesque island. A delicious lunch and barbecue were included for all passengers, but we were careful to leave room for the wonderful onboard meals we’d begun to highly anticipate every evening. Disney Dream has multiple dining venues,

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

LAUGHTER IS TIMELESS, IMAGINATION HAS NO AGE, AND DREAMS ARE FOREVER - Walt Disney including three main dining restaurants, two adult-only specialty restaurants, a buffet (including unlimited amounts of fresh stone crab claws and shrimp steamed to perfection!), multiple bars, lounges and quick service stations. Every night, passengers rotate through the main dining restaurants along with their servers, intentionally building a unique bond between diners and wait staff. Available at an additional cost to passengers are the 2 adult-only restaurants, Palo and Remy. At Palo, we experienced Northern Italian cuisine in a stylish atmosphere at just $30 per person. We dined from the impressive menu while surrounded by sweeping ocean views and ornate decorations such as adorable gondola wine cradles and paintings with hidden Mickeys in the subtle, whispering clouds. Everything from the hearty Caramelle di Vitello and Wild Mushroom Risotto to Fritto di Calamari e Gamberi and Osso Buco left our mouths watering, and our appetites fully satisfied. Meanwhile, the exquisite French-inspired cuisine and extravagant décor found at Remy is proof that Disney Dream means business when it comes to fine dining. Remy, inspired by Disney/Pixar’s 2007 Academy Award-winning film, Ratatouille, offers the most upscale and romantic dining experience on board at a modest cost of $85 per person. As you enter the lavish restaurant,

a $50,000 Swarovski Crystal covered Remy (Ratatouille’s hero) hangs from the ceiling as an elegant welcoming to all the guests who’ve arrived for the high-class evening. Gold plated French plates made just for Disney Dream are a testament to the quality of the food that is served upon them. A French-inspired menu of superior seasonal ingredients ensures dining at Remy is always a first-rate affair. Advising Chef Arnaud Lallement, was awarded a prestigious three Michelin stars in 2014 for his family-run restaurant L’Assiette Champenoise, just outside Reims, France—and Chef Scott Hunnel from award-winning Victoria & Albert’s at Walt Disney World Resort both collaborated to create a menu that melds classic and contemporary styles to perfection. From the excellence of the meal to the firstclass service, it was an amazing dinner that rivals the best of fine dining anywhere in the world. Our experience aboard Disney Dream was simply magical in the purest sense of the word and the three-day duration proved to be the perfect amount of quality time with my family. MUSICAL

TANGLED BY ALEXANDRA NIBLETT

Every year, the Walt Disney Company brings fairytale

favorites and beloved characters to life with timeless shows that captivate both the young and old. Many people grew up adoring the classic stories on screen, and nowadays, guests have the opportunity to experience watching some of their favorite stories in a whole different light — dazzling live stage shows. While stage shows aren’t new to the company, Disney has delivered again, bringing the magic to the sea in Disney Cruise Line’s latest addition to the cruise line’s lineup of live entertainment with Tangled: The Musical. This live musical is performed on every voyage aboard Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Magic. The musical premiered in November last year and became a hit, featuring several familiar songs from the original film along with vibrant sets and spirited dance numbers in the ship’s 977-seat Walt Disney Theater. For those who are familiar with Tangled, you will be delighted to know Disney did a superb job sticking to the storyline while some of your favorite characters from the movie, including Rapunzel, Flynn, Mother Gothel and the ever-so-spunky palace horse Maximus add flair to the humorous tale. Tangled: The Musical is a beautiful collaboration that pleases both the eyes and the ears, and the laborious work that went into creating this special entertainment masterpiece is reflected throughout the entire show. The vivid set features 15 colorful scenes and seven distinct locations, and every set piece for the musical was sculpted and painted by hand. Tony Award-winning costume designer Paloma Young developed 125 costumes using more than 200 different types of fabric, all of which accurately reflect the characters’ personalities and traits. And even more talent came from the creators of the energizing music.

Academy-Award winning composer Alan Menken and Grammy Award-winning lyricist Glenn Slater teamed up for a second time — they previously collaborated on the original Tangled soundtrack — creating three new themed songs specifically for the musical. For those who have never seen the movie or are unfamiliar with Tangled, this musical is guaranteed to pull heartstrings and leave you with a big smile on your face. This Disney classic takes guests on an enchanting adventure following a young girl named Rapunzel who was kidnapped by an ill-willed lady named Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel wished to keep Rapunzel to herself to benefit from Rapunzel’s magical golden locks, and for 17 years, Rapunzel was confined to a tiny tower where she was forbidden to leave. On the brink of Rapunzel’s 18th birthday, she builds the courage to escape and see the world beyond her window, going on a unique, fun-filled journey in search of the sky lanterns she grew up admiring, making some unlikely friends along the way. The musical is an absolute must-see. The Disney Magic itself is an impressive ship, and this musical featuring twice a day is the icing on the cake. Onboard Cruise Director Leslie Dallas said guests are loving it, claiming that “many are waiting outside the doors to see the show.” It is the first time Tangled has been transformed into a broadway style show, and all of the hardworking casts on stage and backstage do a fantastic job of preserving some of that Disney magic that has fans coming back each year. TECH

THE STRANGE NEW WORLD OF

AUTONOMOUS DRIVING BY STEPHANIE FERAZOLLI

30 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TECH

Autonomous cars are the future of driving; they’re becoming less of a fantasy and more of a reality. An autonomous car is a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without much human input. This software is so technological that it detects its surroundings using radar, lidar, GPS, odometry, and computer vision. Autonomous cars have control systems that analyze sensory data to distinguish different cars on the road and are able to follow traffic without you ever having to drive yourself. Advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage.

THE FULLY ELECTRIC, SEMIAUTONOMOUS CAR DRIVES HIGHWAY MILES, USING SENSORS TO GUIDE THE CAR, WHILE YOU SIT BACK AND LET THE CAR DRIVE YOU.

Tesla Motors have recently popularized the driverless car technology with their autopilot software. The fully electric, semi-autonomous car drives highway miles, using sensors to guide the car, while you sit back and let the car drive you. The “Ludicrous” function takes you from 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds, taking you into a smooth and sleek acceleration in comparison to the Lamborghini Huracan, which takes you from 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds. On a recent, and quite frightening experience, I was able to test drive the Tesla Model S P90D where it took me on I-4 through morning traffic. The car was able to use its complex software to steer along the curves and remain in the lines of the highway. The Tesla sensed the other cars on the road as well, displaying them on the computer on the dash. The fully electric car drives over two hundred miles on a full charge, and you can charge from home or at one of the 3,628 supercharger stations dispersed across the country. Tesla announced they are planning on doubling the number of superchargers across the country. Tesla also recently announced the Tesla Model 3, a smaller, more affordable, new model with practically all the features of a

31 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Tesla Model S, including the autopilot feature. The new model will be the safest in its class and will revolutionize semi-autonomous, affordable, goodlooking driving. A close comparison to the autonomous Tesla software is the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive. With similar functions, such as interpreting the roads and other cars and responding in ways such as braking and accelerating, Intelligent Drive offers an advanced system as well. However, the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive is a fuel injected car, unlike the fully electric Tesla, in which a full super charge can last approximately over 200 miles and only takes under an hour to charge. Google is working on their prototype of the autonomous vehicle, in which the software is fully autonomous and is predicted to be on roads by 2020. The Google autonomous car does not intend to be a manufacturer themselves, but rather licensing the technology to other companies. Rumor has it, BMW has partnered with Chinese search engine, Baidu to develop a self-driving, fully functioning prototype set to be released by the end of this year. For months, rumors have been surfacing about Apple building a team of top automotive engineers and the company has reportedly been scoping out locations for top-secret car testing. However, Apple is more likely to release a fully electric car before an autonomous car. The technology currently being engineered for autonomous driving is expected to be the next big wave in automotive technology, if not all locomotion in general. The development of autonomous cars has grown tremendously; the future of autonomous cars is not on it’s way, it has already arrived.

COME FLY WITH ME Spyker, creator of meticulously hand-built

sports cars since 2000, today proudly unveils its third-generation sports car: the Spyker C8 Preliator. Victor R. Muller, Spyker’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer said on the occasion of the unveiling: “The greatest man in our industry, Enzo Ferrari, once said: ‘What’s behind you, doesn’t matter’. What does matter is the fact that we have returned to Geneva today to unveil the worthy successor to the Spyker C8 Aileron, launched right here in 2009, of which the last five units are being assembled in our new production facilities in Coventry, the United Kingdom.“ The Spyker C8 Preliator’s design represents the ultimate translation of our aviation heritage to a “road jet”, a plane without wings, reflected among others in the Head-Up Display, fitted as standard to every car. It is the epitome of our unrivaled craftsmanship. By mounting a supercharger to the Audi V8 engine we have improved the performance of the Spyker C8 Preliator significantly as compared to its predecessor and its exclusivity is warranted since we will produce a mere 50 units. The “Preliator” name, which means “fighter” or “warrior” in latin, pays tribute to that aviation heritage: “Fighters” are warplanes as made by Spyker between 1914 and 1918. But even more so, “Preliator” symbolises the uphill battles Spyker faced and won in the past couple of years. The Spyker C8 Preliator is made for discerning owners who appreciate the attention to detail and bespoke features we have offered them for over a decade and a half now. Our dedicated crew will assemble the first cars in Coventry, UK, together with CPP Metalcraft, our very first partner since we started Spyker back in 2000, as of the last quarter of this year. When I designed the Spyker C8 Preliator I wanted it to ooze the sheer tenacity and determination with which we created a new dawn for our company and by launching it here today we pay homage to the latin axiom which has adorned the Spyker propellor logo since 1914 “Nulla tenacia invia est via” - for the tenacious no road is impassable”.

The Spyker C8 Preliator’s contemporary design is even more heavily inspired by Spyker’s aviation heritage than any of our previous models with a clear emphasis on the typical aircraft air intakes, the so-called NACA ducts, and represents the latest evolution of Spyker’s signature architecture. In the first-generation cars, the propeller design was consistently applied to many elements of the cars. The second generation cars showed a transition to turbine engine inspired design. Within the design of the new third generation cars, the Spyker C8 Preliator, the emphasis has shifted to submerged air intakes, the so-called NACA ducts, as used in the aviation industry. In order to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the car, several changes in styling were made so as to reduce drag such as the replacement of the air scoop on the canopy by a NACA duct. Small ailerons were added to the front splitter and side skirts to redirect the airflow optimally. The shark-like gills have been abandoned, which results in a cleaner, smoother appearance. The glass canopy has a reflective gold coating applied to it as used in jet fighters. The trademark V-shaped grille with honeycomb mesh is now characterised by the central pillar first seen on the Spyker B6 Venator concept car shown here in 2013. Also the rear diffuser was redesigned for improved functionality. Small winglets mounted on the front splitter and side skirts optimize the airflow. The CNC-machined stainless steel rear lights are made of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) emulating fighter jet afterburners. LED lights were also used for the indicators and the sidelights in the headlight units. The brake light has been sculpted into the rear panel so as to ensure smooth flowing design lines. Elegantly aggressive 19” Turbofan™ wheels are shown in a mirror polish finish. The Spyker C8 Preliator is available in 16 standard colours, but customers may choose any colour they wish as an option, as well as the sporty Spyker Squadron GT2 colour scheme. The C8 Preliator shown here has a new colour called Satin Jet Grey. Spyker will meet any demand of its discerning owners to create an absolutely bespoke car of which he or she will never find another one.

CELEBRITY SOUP

DRESSES

THAT MADE HISTORY MOST ICONIC CELEBRITY BRIDAL GOWNS OF THE PAST 60 YEARS By Riesa Pascal When it comes to wedding dresses, there’s never been a shortage of amazing, innovative designs and no group proves this more than celebrities. Celebrity wedding dresses come in all colors, lengths and styles, but one thing they all have in common is their extravagance and potential to become memorable, iconic pieces of history. Who can’t picture Kim Kardashian in her mermaid Givenchy gown or Solange Knowles in her floor length cape dress? (If you need a reminder, that was the sixth outfit Knowles switched into during her wedding festivities... did I mention celebrities also love to change clothes at their weddings?) Let’s take a look back through the years as we recall some of the most iconic celebrity wedding dresses of each decade.

THE 50s - GRACE KELLY, 1956 Perhaps nothing yells iconic more than the stunning gown worn by American actress Grace Kelly when she wed Prince Rainier of Monaco. Grace was already royalty in Hollywood and after her lavish wedding to Prince Rainier, every bride wanted to have such a romantic ceremony of their own. The pearl-studded, long-sleeved gown was a parting gift from Grace’s former studio, MGM, which had a tradition of providing their female stars with their wedding dresses. Helen Rose, the studio’s Academy Award winning costume designer, was recruited to create the elaborate gown which was worked on for six weeks by three dozen seamstresses. The gown was made of a fitted lace bodice and bell-shaped satin skirt which was fused together with a pleated waist. Unlike other royal brides, Grace chose not to wear a tiara and attached her veil to a beaded juliet cap instead. She also chose to carry a prayer book with her down the aisle, which was covered to match the dress. The final look was elegant, unique and served as the perfect dress for Grace’s transition from movie star to full-fledged royal.

THE 60s - PRISCILLA PRESLEY, 1967 Priscilla Beaulieu was just 14 when she met Elvis Presley on an Army base in Germany. After courting for eight long years, the couple was finally married at The Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. The future Mrs. Presley was 22 at the time and claims that her search for a wedding dress ended up taking months. She finally settled on a flowing beaded silk-chiffon gown, which was trimmed in seed pearls. The pure white gown featured a lace neckline, full-length sleeves and a simple A-line silhouette that spilled out into a small train. Her three-foot veil was secured to her signature beehive hairdo with a rhinestone crown. In an excerpt from her novel Elvis and Me, Priscilla spoke of her dress hunt saying, “Disguised in dark glasses and a hat, I shopped every exclusive boutique from Memphis to L.A. where, despite my disguise, I was paranoid enough to think people recognized me. Finally someone suggested a little out-of-the-way shop in L.A...it was here that I found my wedding dress. It wasn’t extravagant, it wasn’t extreme—it was simple and to me beautiful.”

50 STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

THE 70s - BIANCA MACIAS, 1971 When actress Bianca Macias married Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, her dress was the complete opposite of Priscilla’s when it comes to modest necklines. In fact, it wasn’t a dress at all! Perhaps it was a sign of changing times, but to the shock of all, both Bianca and Mick opted to wear leisure suits for their day of holy matrimony. Bianca, who was four months pregnant with their daughter Jade at the time, stunned in a tailored Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking jacket. Her pregnancy prevented her from being able to button a blouse under her jacket so Bianca went completely without one and wore nothing under the plunging neckline. Also breaking tradition was Bianca’s choice to elegantly attach her veil under a large, oversized hat. She was certainly not a conventional bride, but her chic outfit made for an instant classic and iconic fashion moment for weddings in the 70s.

THE 80s - PRINCESS DIANA, 1981 The late Princess Diana incorporated all the details of an iconic royal gown in the dress she wore to marry Prince Charles in 1981. Lady Diana Spencer was just 21-years-old, but it was a gorgeous fairytale wedding fit for a princess. The dress has been called one of the most famous dresses in the world and was a closely guarded secret during construction. British fashion designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel designed the dress to be “something that was going to go down in history, but also something that Diana loved,” and go down in history it did! The silk dress was embellished with frills, flounces and bows, sumptuous fabrics, jewels, embroidered lace, crinolines and corsetry and who can forget that never ending 25-foot train? Diana’s enormous skirt was supported by layers of petticoats while her ruffled collar and puffed sleeves drew attention to the fitted bodice. A tiny 18-carat gold horseshoe studded with diamonds was sewn into the back label of the dress while a tiny blue bow was sewn into the waistband of her larger-than life Victorian-style gown.

THE 90s - CELINE DION, 1994 If you were alive in the 90s, then chances are very high that you remember the Marie Antoinetteinspired creation Celine Dion wore when she married her manager Rene Angelil in 1994. With its long sleeves and form-hugging bodice, the extravagant Mirella and Steve Gentile gown took more than 1,000 hours to create. The dress was the perfect choice for Celine, who topped off the look with a seven pound tiara that the singer had to have sewn into her hair. Just looking at the headpiece is enough to give you a headache! The tiara contained more than 2,000 Austrian crystals and looked like something straight out of a fairytale. The blushing bride’s dress also featured a 20-foot train which required the help of eight bridesmaids—all of Celine’s sisters—to keep on track. Thank God for a large family!

2000 - PRESENT - KATE MIDDLETON, 2011 We all remember where we were on April 29, 2011 when Kate Middleton stunned the world in a custom wedding gown designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen for her nuptials to Prince William. The contemporary wedding dress for the Duchess of Cambridge reflected a new generation of the British monarchy. The slim-fitting gown showed off Kate’s slender frame with a strapless corset overlaid with a lace bodice. The nipped-in waist and padded hips recalled Victorian corsetry while the detail on the lace incorporated the four emblems of the UK: the rose, daffodil, thistle and shamrock. The dress also featured a high neck which plunged into a deep V-shape and drew attention to the sweetheart neckline. Six different types of lace were used to create the overlay of the skirt. Kate completed the look with a Cartier halo tiara that was loaned by the Queen and was the bride’s “something borrowed.” The Duchess also had a blue ribbon sewn into the hem. Based on sheer memorability, Burton’s design deserves every accolade it gets! 51 STYLETOME.COM

LAB GROWN HEARTS WE ARE ALMOST THERE! BY NAOMI SHIF Science is both thinking with its head and with its heart these days. The need for thousands of donor hearts may be close to an idea of the past. On an average, 22 people die each day waiting for transplants that can’t take place because of the shortage of donated organs, and about 9.1 percent of transplants taken place in 2015 were for heart eligiblity. In a world where more than half of critical patients will not receive the transplant they need, diligent scientists and researchers continue to use their findings to further the success of future heart transplants. The scarce amount of usable hearts for the some 4,154 candidates on the waiting list and the plausible rejection from the new host body, have brought major concern among the medical community for years. Monumental studies by a team at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School have brought to light the new practice

of using patient familiar pluripotent stem cells to support heart advancement. The “heart wants what it wants,” right? Finding that a great deal of worry still lay in the possible rejection of the foreign donor heart, the scientists used their previous lab research of similar form. Using a detergent solution they stripped a group of donor organs from cells that might set off an immune response in the recipient. With the use of adult skin cells and messenger RNA they were able to turn the cells into pluripotent stem cells able to cultivate into two different types of cardiac cells including cardiomyocytes. After evaluating the potential performance of the cardiac matrix organs, they infused the organs with the new generated cells for close testing. Two weeks of scrutinized study and viable conditions of normal heart function successfully displayed that fresh and functional 56 STYLETOME.COM

human heart tissue had been produced. Finally, testing the organs with electric shock, scientists found the hearts to actually start beating once more. The overwhelmingly positive study suggested that if original human skin cells from the actual recipient were used in transplant scenarios, similar to those in the study, the chance of success would greatly increase. The human body would cease immune fire, so to speak. Scientists’ main focus on the subject, following such a success, is to continue to master ways to produce even more cardiac cells for future experimentation. While completely growing lab generated hearts is still a hope of the future, this new development sets our medical community at an extremely increased advantage. As research pushes to the future, so does the health of our nation.

HACKS THE SAN BERNARDINO IPHONE WITH THE ALL WRITS ACT OF 1789

By Mark NeJame / Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley

The utilization One of this year’s biggest headlines has been the FBI v. Apple encryption debacle. If you’re like most people, you understand the basics, but the technicalities leave you with a glazed over look. Don’t be discouraged; in the everevolving digital age, the debate between privacy versus national security affects us all, so it’s important to understand the key points and their potential impact. Here are the Cliff’s Notes: One of the shooters of the 2015 San Bernardino attack, Syed Rizwan Farook, possessed an iPhone 5C, which he used for work as an employee of San Bernardino County. The phone was owned by San Bernardino County. The iPhone was locked with the four-digit password protection feature of the iPhone. After the shooting, the FBI obtained the iPhone and began attempting to unlock the iPhone in order to obtain information it considered vital to the criminal investigation. Specifically, the FBI was attempting to utilize a “password-guessing technique” whereby

different four-digit passcodes are entered repeatedly until the right one is guessed. This is known as “brute forcing the password.” Basic statistics tells us that at some point the FBI would be able to identify the correct password fairly quickly using this method. There are only so many four-digit combinations that exist, right? (10,000 to be exact). Not exactly. Even the most basic of software programs provide protection from access to data using this method, and Apple is no exception. The user data on one’s iPhone is protected from brute-forcing the password by using “two factors to secure and decrypt data on the phone – the password the user chooses and a unique 256-bit AES secret key that’s embedded in the phone when it’s manufactured,” as described by Wired.com. These two factors work in tandem to access (or “decrypt”) the user data: the four-digit passcode is entered, which then triggers the device to perform a calculation which combines the four-digit passcode and the AES “secret key.” And voila! The data is decrypted and accessible. 58 STYLETOME.COM

The problem encountered by the FBI was this: after a certain number of attempts at the four-digit passcode, the iPhone automatically erases the four-digit passcode, thereby permanently locking all users out, as it eliminates one of the two factors required to unlock and decrypt the data. The underlying user data remains on the device, but is unable to be decrypted and is therefore inaccessible. The FBI used up their “guesses” within ten attempts, at which point it was locked out; the user data on Syed’s iPhone was declared inaccessible as a result of Apple’s security protections. The rest is history. The FBI requested Apple create software to override the security features. Apple, citing to its strict pro-privacy policy, refused. The FBI took it to the judge, who then issued an order compelling Apple to develop said software, which would “bypass or disable the auto-erase function,” Apple appealed. A hearing was scheduled, but before the matter could be heard, a third party announced it had developed a method to unlock the iPhone, which was indeed true. On March 28, 2016, the iPhone was

unlocked and the user data was accessed by the FBI. The Department of Justice vacated the case. What’s concerning is the antiquated law that the court used when issuing its initial order requiring Apple to develop software which would undermine its own security features. The All Writs Act of 1789 is a federal statute which authorizes the courts to “issue all writs necessary or appropriate in aid of their respective jurisdictions and agreeable to the usages and principles of law.” Pretty broad, right? Pretty old, right? The statute was originally a part of the Judiciary Act of 1789, which was enacted during the first session of Congress, was signed by George Washington, and was intended to (and did) establish the judiciary and its powers. The irony! One of this country’s oldest pieces of legislation relied upon as justification to compel (arguably) the world’s most progressive technology giant to develop specific software against its will.

THE BATTLE THAT WAGED ON BETWEEN APPLE AND THE GOVERNMENT HAS SENT SILICON VALLEY INTO A PRIVACY AND SECURITY FRENZY. For you libertarians, chin up. The battle that waged on between Apple and the government has sent Silicon Valley into a privacy and security frenzy. Coders and cryptographers are slated for celebrity status, as they build secure products, encrypting data from end-to-end. Companies such as WhatsApp, which is now owned by Facebook, have already built-in protections which would completely stonewall the federal government from obtaining any data. Wired.com reports that WhatsApp has encrypted data to such a level that it would be impossible to comply with a court order demanding access to user content. And for you dear Federalists, collecting private data in the interest of national security should be A-OK so long as we have the ol’ All Writs Act of 1789 to rely on. “The law actually seems to be keeping up with technology by being so broad that we’re just reinterpreting it all the time,” Irina Raicu, director of the Internet Ethics Program at Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics had commented to NPR. Good point, Irina. Or we could just rely on the sophisticated international criminal hackers who are working just as hard to develop programs that will undermine the security and privacy features currently being developed in Silicon Valley by companies such as WhatsApp. And let the Crypto Wars begin.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

SPOTIFY,

Gone are the days of records, tapes, and CDs, along with the difficulty of accessibility in the world of music. But with all of the streaming services available today, the convenience of digital music has almost become a challenge. How do you know which music streaming service is best for you? We’ve researched the top three services we think you’ll love; all you have to do is read our reviews to see which one knows you best.

PANDORA, OR APPLE MUSIC

APPLE MUSIC Even the most loyal Spotify users have tested the waters of Apple Music, as this latest streaming service is quite in vogue and fashionably compatible with Apple products. A catalog of 30 million songs for a $9.99 per month rate made Apple Music’s offer equivalent to that of Spotify, but the service needed something else in order to rival the proven master of music streaming.

WHICH MUSIC APP KNOWS YOU BEST? BY COURTNEY CAGGIANO

Once again, we find Apple doing what only Apple can do: implementing Siri into its music service. By connecting Siri to your Apple Music library, you can ask your iPhone to play anything, from a certain artist or album to something as specific as “the top songs from 1993.” With its sleek presentation and Apple-friendly features, it’s no question that Apple Music is made for iPhone users, although it

60 STYLETOME.COM

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

is also offered for Android and Windows devices. For all of the iPhone fans looking for a music streaming service that is fresh, innovative, and easy to use, Apple Music is the perfect choice.

SPOTIFY If you’re all about connecting with new music and new friends, then Spotify is the service for you. This is perhaps the most wellknown streaming service due to its famed over 30-million track catalog, yet what makes it stand out from Apple Music’s catalog of a similar size is its focus on networking— for music curation and social sharing. Each day on Spotify’s homepage, you can find the latest music and newest artists, as well as a variety of playlists for every taste. You can also browse through the top tracks in your location, as well as those in other parts of the world. Of course, you’ll want to share these new tracks with your friends, which is why Spotify allows listeners to follow their Facebook

friends. This is just one of the many social features of Spotify, making it the reigning champion of social music streaming. As for the price, it’s the same as Apple Music: $9.99 per month.

PANDORA While Apple Music and Spotify subscribers range between 20 and 30 million, Pandora has kept its 80 million users even with the latest streaming services entering the race. As the first service to implement personalized recommendations for custom playlists, it remains the cultural go-to for randomized music to set the soundtrack for the day. Since its launch in 2000, Pandora has continued to be one of the best options for free streaming with availability across a wide range of devices. Although it has far fewer songs than Apple Music and Spotify, its premium rate of $4.99 per month is about half of the competitors pricing. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to provide background music, 61 STYLETOME.COM

whether you’re cooking in the kitchen or on a road trip, Pandora is a cheap and carefree way to provide for your streaming needs. Whether you’re an iPhone idolizer, an ontrend music lover, or just someone in the mood for a custom playlist, one of these three services will be a great option for you. Each streaming service has its unique features that make it stand out from the rest, and with comparable rates and all three providing free offers, there’s no wrong answer. You’ll just want to make your decision based on how you desire to incorporate music into your lifestyle.

WITH ALL OF THE STREAMING SERVICES AVAILABLE TODAY, THE CONVENIENCE OF DIGITAL MUSIC HAS ALMOST BECOME A CHALLENGE.

GET SAUCY! Blueberry Sauce • • • • • •

2 Tablespoons butter 2 Pints blueberries, cleaned ¾ Cups sugar 1 Teaspoon sugar 1 Teaspoon cornstarch Juice of 1 lemon

Combine the butter, blueberries, sugar, cornstarch and lemon juice in a small pot over medium-high heat. Bring up to a low boil and stir gently until the berries break down and release their juice. The consistency should remain a bit chunky. As it cools down slightly, it will thicken up a bit. Strawberry Sauce

Basic Crepe Batter • • • • •

4 Large eggs 1 ½ Cups milk; more as needed 1 ½ Cups all-purpose flour ¼ Teaspoon salt 2-3 Tablespoons butter (for basting the crepe maker cooking surface)

Combine the eggs and milk in a bowl, add the flour and salt and whisk until smooth. Separately, combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Push the flour aside to make a well in the center. Break the eggs into the center and pour in ¾ Cup of the milk mixture. Whisking constantly, gradually draw the flour in until you have a thick mixture. Add another ¾ Cup of the milk mixture. Whisk until the mixture forms a smooth batter. Strain the batter, to remove any lumps, into a quart size measuring cup with a spout and let the batter rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Melt the butter and use a pastry brush to put a coating to the cooking plate before pouring and cooking. Transfer the crepe to a cooling rack. Proceed with the remaining batter. We here at Associates in Dermatology urge you to adopt sun-smart practices and remember that the practice of dermatology involves improving and maintaining not only the appearance but also the health of your skin, hair, and nails.

Real Estate Redefined: Carolyn Moriarty & Company Carolyn Moriarty has built a reputation as being one of the most sought-after realtors in Florida on her ability to connect with buyers and sellers alike, and her dedication to finding the best property for each client’s need is what sets her apart in a very competitive field. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature

Since 911 American’s have become accustomed to putting up with security screening by TSA. The purpose of this heightened security is to prevent dangerous weapons from being brought onto the airplane. What many do not realize is that the screening by TSA has resulted in seizures of cash carried by passengers. Taking cash onto a commercial airplane is perfectly legal. However, if you are traveling outside the country or returning to the United States from abroad, you must fill out a form if you have over $10,000 in cash.

Mark L. Horwitz

GOVERNMENT’S SEIZURE OF CASH AT AIRPORTS By Mark L. Horwitz Criminal Defense Attorney

Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com • www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

If TSA finds a large amount of cash in your luggage, purse or pockets, you will be in for an unpleasant experience. You will be called out of line, taken to a private room and interviewed by law enforcement officers. You will be questioned about the source of the cash and the reason for carrying the cash. If you refuse to answer or if the law enforcement officer does not believe your story, the cash will be seized. You will more than likely miss your flight because of the time it will take for the law enforcement officer to complete the questioning, count the money and decide whether to seize your money. In most cases the money is seized. Rarely are individuals arrested and usually the individuals are not charged with a crime. A person whose money was seized must then prove that they are entitled to get their money back. The government is not required to file a lawsuit to prove it is entitled to keep the money. Rather, an individual who wants their cash back must show that the government did not have probable cause to seize the money. This is the rule in civil forfeitures and is applicable to the Federal Government and most states. Civil forfeitures have been the subject of articles outlining government

abuse of seizing assets from individuals who are never charged and legitimately earned the money. The civil forfeiture rules apply to airport seizures as well. The end result of a cash seizure is that the person will have to expend a lot of time, energy and expense in trying to convince the government to return the property. In seizures by the Federal Government, individuals must petition the appropriate agency under that agency’s rules and establish a legal source of the cash, as well as the reason for bringing the cash onto the plane. As an alternative, the owner of the money may file a lawsuit to prove the money was from a legal source and the reason for bringing the money on the plane was also legal. Both of these methods may take months if not years. The amount of cash that is large enough to result in an airport seizure is not subject to any legal minimum; it could be as little as $5,000 or less. That decision is made by the law enforcement officers called in to investigate the matter. A person who contests the seizure and has their money returned is generally not entitled to recover attorney’s fees, interest or damages caused by being deprived of the money. The widespread use of civil forfeiture including seizures at the airport has resulted in several articles in the press criticizing the unfair seizures of assets. Law-abiding citizens have been harmed and businesses ruined. Recently, New Mexico passed a law that essentially abolished civil forfeitures because of the abuses. Many believe that it is fundamentally unfair for the government to seize someone’s money and then make the citizen prove they are entitled to its return.

THE ARTS

MASTERING THE ART HOTEL FLORIDA’S ACCLAIMED BOUTIQUE HOTEL RE-MASTERS THE DEFINITION OF A FINE ARTS MUSEUM Courtesy of Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College

1

Art is in the DNA of The Alfond Inn, the acclaimed hotel owned by Rollins College, which uses all of its net profits to provide scholarships for deserving students. While it belongs to a rarefied category where art is integrated into the guest experience, The Alfond Inn stands alone as the only hotel in the United States that serves as the extension of a fine arts museum. At every turn, from the entrance lobby to restaurant, lounge and corridors, The Alfond Inn was designed as the imaginative extension of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College. The hotel maintains a rotating display of cutting-edge works from The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, a nearly 300 piece collection of contemporary art that was assembled and donated to The Cornell Fine Arts Museum by Rollins alumni Barbara and Ted Alfond.

2

“The Alfond Inn is a new paradigm for museum spaces,” says Ena Heller, the Bruce A. Beal director of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College, one of the country’s most lauded liberal arts colleges. “It expands the horizons and the definition of a museum, and takes the museum off campus.” The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art fosters a deeply synergistic relationship between the museum and the hotel. Art at The Alfond Inn is woven into every guest’s experience, thanks to inventive installations of works that can range from the eye opening to the provocative. For guests who want to explore the collection, there are audio tours, walking tours with a curator and even monthly happy hour events that combine the best of the collection and the hotel. Professors from Rollins College often hold classes within the hotel.

3

The collection, conceived as a “visual syllabus” for the college, includes paintings, photographs, sculptures and mixed-media works by established and emerging artists, and is overseen by private curator Abigail Ross Goodman and Amy Galpin, Curator of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. Every April, they curate a fresh installation of 94 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

works at The Alfond Inn, changing selected works throughout the year. This April, new acquisitions from The Alfond Collection making their Winter Park debut at The Alfond Inn include pieces by Jenny Holzer, Melvin Edwards, Anne Collier, Mernet Larsen, Amy Sillman, Jacob Sobol and John Giorno. In May, Galpin is opening a show called “Displacement” at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum where works from the Alfond Collection by Ruben Ortiz-Torres and Shrin Neshat will be unveiled. The collection itself has been “curated with a point of view, highlighting the values of a liberal arts college,” says Ena Heller, “such as critical thinking, embracing different perspectives and art as a portal to knowledge. It’s part of Rollins College’s global citizenship mission.” The Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art fits squarely into Winter Park’s centuryold dedication to the fine arts. In addition to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, the city is also home to the Polasek Museum and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which has the world’s most extensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Weekly Art Tours are complimentary and conducted every Sunday at 1 p.m. A happy hour tour takes place on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Audio guides are available at the front desk.
