Innovative… Impactful… Inspirational… ANNUAL REPORT JUNE 2014 • SIVAN 5774

Innovative 2

Impactful Inspirational Weaving the fabric of the community The Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee is the central voluntary communal organization of the Jewish community. Through its fund-raising, planning and community relations efforts, either independently or in partnership with other Jewish organizations, the Federation works to promote the general welfare, viability and cohesiveness of the Jewish community of Nashville and Middle Tennessee and to ensure the continuity of the Jewish people locally, in Israel and around the world. On the cover: Torch lighting ceremonies at Israel 65 (April 2013 ) and Israel 66 (April 2014). Photos by Jack L. Koch, Jr.

Innovative… Impactful… Inspirational… Interested? We hope you are because at the Jewish Federation we are always exploring new ways to engage the Nashville Jewish community that will resonate with every individual who supports and benefits from our important work.

Let’s take innovation. Our Jewish Federation is well ahead of the curve and the trends that define modern Jewish life. Now into its fifth year, Best Jewish Nashville grant-funded programs continue to serve an ever increasing number of constituents through our local agencies and congregations and our primary overseas partners, the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). In just the past two years an astounding nineteen new projects, serving participants across the age spectrum have been created and implemented by our funding partners. From a large-type newsletter for our senior adults to a Rosh Hashanah “seder” for Vanderbilt Hillel students to expanding the wildly popular PJ Library program to 8-year olds, new programs and new twists on old programs underscore our commitment to being fresh and relevant.

And how about our impact? Federation-funding touches almost every Jew in one way or another. Ethiopian immigrants in Israel get a true head start in their education as a result of our special funding for tutoring at-risk kids in our Israeli partnership community of Hadera. Elderly Jews living on meager pensions in the former Soviet Union are assured nutritious meals and medical attention through our support of JDC wellness and home visit programs. And the Jewish Agency continues its vital work of laying the groundwork for Jews to embark on Aliyah as anti-Semitism and civil unrest simmers in the Ukraine, Venezuela and France. Locally, the impact is equally impressive. Federation-funded scholarships permit Jewish families with financial need to enroll their children in Jewish pre-schools at the GJCC, at congregational pre-schools and at the Akiva School. A strategic partnership between our Jewish Foundation’s newly created One Happy Camper initiative and our ongoing needs-based scholarship program has helped us send a record number of Jewish kids to Jewish sleep-a-away camps. Jewish pre-school, day school and camp experiences are among the strongest indicators for ensuring a strong Jewish identity into adulthood. We estimate that through our investment of nearly $2.2 million in local, national, regional and overseas grants, our generosity touches nearly one million Jews worldwide. At $2.20 a person, we can’t really think of a better cost-effective investment! Better yet, for our generous donors it’s all tax-deductible!

Inspirational… Our cup runneth over! We are blessed with a magnificent Jewish community that inspires our work and our mission every single day. In November of 2012 when Israel was under rocket attack from terrorists in the Gaza Strip, we rallied at the Gordon Jewish Community Center and more than 500 family and friends stood arm-in-arm in solidarity with our family and friends in Israel. Our voices were heard across the seas. Over the past two years we’ve commemorated and celebrated every important date on the Jewish calendar. Extraordinary, poignant and emotional gatherings for Yom HaShoah and Yom Hazikaron. And boisterous celebrations for Yom Ha’atzmaut. Each prayer, each song, each spoken memory, every dance step and every beat of music helped to inform and enrich our sacred bond with one another. We are so proud to be members of and to have the privilege to lead this Jewish Federation and this Jewish community. We want to thank the many Federation volunteers and Federation staff members who invest so much time in making Jewish life in Nashville so rich and rewarding. We hope you’ll enjoy reading about the fine work of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation in the pages of this annual report, and of course we want to thank all of you for making it happen.

Best Jewish Nashville Community Planning and Priority Setting Since its creation and implementation in 2010 the Best Jewish Nashville Community Planning and Priority Setting Project has yielded many innovative and impactful changes to improve and strengthen Jewish life in Middle Tennessee. Thanks to the responsiveness and expertise of our talented agency and congregation professionals, we have funded 31 New Initiative Grants targeting next generation leadership development, increased services for seniors, and Israel education and advocacy programs. The New Initiative Grants are a direct result of your feedback that strategic and novel approaches were needed to target these areas for increased programming. The collective impact of these 31 new grants have dramatically improved qualitatively and increased quantitatively our community’s Jewish life. Federation currently funds 77 different programs, services, organizations and agencies offering maximum impact for each donor gift. As promised at the outset of Best Jewish Nashville, after three years the project would be evaluated to determine if we had accomplished our initial goals, whether the changes should become permanent, and the next steps to continue planning for the our Jewish future.

PJ Library is reaching 315 children and over 65% of the eligible available audience. Program Coordinator Sara Hanai offers holiday and Jewish themed programs throughout the community.

Vanderbilt Hillel’s recent work on increasing engagement of upper class students has yielded 80 different students attending monthly events, and 25 students living in Nashville postgraduation.

Joel Abramson, our community engagement associate, offers programs and activities that serve over 400 NowGen participants. Twice yearly 150 Jews in their twenties and thirties gather for Rosh Hashanah and Purim parties. Smaller groups meet weekly and monthly around areas of shared interest.

A ten member committee chaired by Faith Haber Galbraith and Lisa Perlen, which included BJN Project Chair Steve Riven; and past President Cynthia Morin, fulfilled the task and made recommendations to the board for the next phase of BJN which include; • Continuing to identify and fund new programs to better serve changing needs. • Offering funds for cutting-edge programs which address identified needs. • Updating the 2002 Nashville Jewish Demographic Survey. • Establishing an Israel and Overseas Committee to create a priority-based funding rationale to align with our local priorities. • Continuing the successful model of priority-based program funding. We will continue to work with our service providers to collaborate and streamline service delivery, innovate new approaches to meeting changing communal needs, and engage leaders of all ages as we build the Best Jewish Nashville possible. Please contact Harriet Schiftan to get involved in these activities at harriet@jewishnashville.org

In the three years since the creation of the Young Adult Mission Trip program, twenty selected young leaders have traveled to Israel, Moldova and Cuba. Upon their return they serve as leaders in all areas of the Federation.

Our Community Shlicha, Hadar Moskovitz, is completing her second year of Shlichut in Nashville. She has offered dozens of programs to hundreds of participants of all ages at every congregation and organization. Innovative programs are also offered to Nashville’s Israeli-born children, adults, and families. Her educational programs have increased understanding of and engagement with Israel at all levels.

Community Relations Committee Widening the Tent: The Community Relations Committee underwent an extensive strategic planning process, emerging as a larger, redesigned group with diverse voices representing the breadth and scope of Nashville’s Jewish community.

Israel Advocacy:

12

• The CRC brought a number of notable experts on Israel and international affairs to educate the community and stimulate valuable discussions and debate: – David Makofsky (Washington Institute) debated how to find commonality in the peace process with Ghaith Al-Omari (American Task Force in Palestine). – Noam Shalit recounted his experiences when his son Gilad was abducted by Hamas and held for five years. He also spoke about the controversial exchange when 1000 Palestinian prisoners were released in return for the return of Gilad to Israel. – In the wake of Israel’s election, Gil Hoffman (Jerusalem Post) provided a behind-the-scenes look inside the country’s political arena. – United Against Nuclear Iran briefed the community on how close Iran is to the bomb and what citizens can do to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. – David Olesker (Jerusalem Center for Communication and Advocacy Training) provided concrete skills to advocate on behalf of Israel. • The CRC produced a video in honor of Israel’s 65th birthday, which featured many in our Jewish community sending their best wishes and recounting their own Israel memories.

Intergroup Relations: Helping the Jewish Community Connect • The 2013 annual Social Action Seder garnered accolades from the 200 people who attended, the majority of whom were unfamiliar with Nashville’s Jewish community. The Seder honored local heroes of the civil rights movement, including Rabbi Randall Falk and John Seigenthaler. • Metro Schools Superintendent Jesse Register served as the honorary chair for the 2014 CRC Social Action Seder, which drew more than 250 people. Focused on the theme of education, the Seder honored a number of teachers who have made a difference in that arena.

Holocaust Remembrance: • The CRC’s 2014 Yom Hashoah community commemoration drew more than 300 people, including a large number of students. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, there was a performance of “My Heart in a Suitcase” to much acclaim.

Our Work in Schools: • The T CRC was highly active and visible in the state’s textbook review process. After researching textbooks – and proposed state standards for those books – for A inaccuracies and bias against Judaism and Israel, the CRC submitted numerous in reviews, and then testified in front of the state’s Textbook Commission about the re problematic books. The CRC also worked with publishers to correct inaccuracies and in p many cases, up to 80% of its suggestions were adopted. m • The T CRC presented a well-received program at Montgomery Bell Academy on how religious minorities can thrive at school. This event was co-sponsored by a large re number of private and public schools and community organizations. n • T The CRC quickly and effectively responded when Jewish families experienced anti-Semitism, anti-Israel bias, and the blurring of the line between church and state a at school. a • The T CRC distributed a four-year calendar of Jewish holidays to public and private K-12 schools, as well as universities, to educate them about the needs of Jewish students. sc
