JEWISH FEDERATION & JEWISH FOUNDATION OF NASHVILLE AND MIDDLE TENNESSEE

A Message from the President and Executive Director To paraphrase Charles Dickens, “These are the best of times.” We begin this message by reflecting on the very positive trajectory of our Nashville Jewish community. Nearly a decade ago the Jewish Federation initiated the Best Jewish Nashville process which resulted in new funding priorities for the Jewish Federation and helped us to be more accountable to our valued and generous donors. Then last year we completed a strategic planning process that was dubbed Best Jewish Nashville 2.0. Drawing upon the results and recommendations of the 2015 Nashville Jewish Community Study, we sought to make Best Jewish Nashville even better. We have succeeded in so many ways. We’ve expanded our outreach and engagement efforts to reach those who live away from the geographic “core” of the Jewish community; we’ve ramped up programming to attract marginally affiliated and unaffiliated Jews as well as interfaith couples and families. And we’ve thrown out a big welcome mat through our Welcoming Ambassadors and Newcomers programs. These are just a few of the programs associated with Best Jewish Nashville and Best Jewish Nashville 2.0 that are highlighted in the pages of this Annual Report. Our overall goal is to be a Jewish Federation that is designed to meet the realities of being Jewish in America as we approach the third decade of the 21st Century. We know we still have much to do and we’re not afraid to experiment as evidenced by the more than 60 New Initiative programs the Jewish Federation has funded since 2010. We welcome and embrace the spirit of collaboration that exists between our local agencies and congregations. We strive to always have our “listening” channels wide open recognizing that great ideas can emerge from any segment of our Jewish community. We were tremendously gratified by the incredible success of the LIFE & LEGACYTM program, which we began last year in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. With more than 485 letters of intent

secured in Year One of this project, we conservatively estimate that this will yield more than $15 million in new endowment funds for the 13 Jewish organizations that are our partners in this initiative. Current research on nonprofits informs us that by the year 2050 organizations that do not have at least 20 percent of their operating budgets flowing from endowments will face serious challenges in maintaining their annual programs. Our important work now will ensure a bright future for the Jewish Federation and all of our communal partners. This past year, in partnership with the Nashville Symphony and the Nashville Public Library, the Jewish Federation brought the Violins of Hope exhibition to our city. It was our hope and dream that the stories behind these cherished and sacred Holocaust-era instruments would bring diverse segments of our city together like never before. What transpired exceeded all of our expectations. Who would have thought that we would commemorate Yom HaShoah from the stage of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center? Or that just a few weeks later, we would celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Israel’s Independence in Centennial Park? We began our message with Dickens and will end with Theodor Herzl. In speaking of Zionism and a Jewish homeland, Herzl famously stated “If you will it, it is no dream…” Often times the rest of the sentence is not uttered—“and if you do not will it, a dream it is and a dream it will stay.” At the Jewish Federation our will is strong, our energy endless and our commitment to a rich Jewish life eternal. We will continue to realize our dreams and we thank all of you who through your willing support make it happen.

TODAY, TOMORROW, INTO THE FUTURE
Our successes in 2017-2018
• The LIFE & LEGACY program in its inaugural year has empowered thirteen local Jewish organizations and congregations to work collaboratively and has secured over 485* Letters of Intent for the future of the Nashville Jewish community through legacy giving. We anticipate continued successes for this critical communitywide effort underwritten by the Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. • Violins of Hope, a shared project of the Jewish Federation with the Nashville Symphony, brought together 28 program partners and sponsored over 50 concerts, lectures, and interactive programs throughout the arts community thereby educating thousands about the lessons of the Holocaust and introducing many to the good work of the Jewish Federation. • Congregation Micah and the Community Relations Committee teamed up on Journey to Justice to deepen and strengthen friendships with our partners in the African American community. • Over 1,000 celebrants attended Israel@70 in Centennial Park – a first for the Jewish Federation! • Our efforts to serve interfaith couples and their families were accelerated by a partnership between the leadership of the clergy of two Reform congregations, Congregation Micah and The Temple, and the Jewish Federation who led an Interfaith Couples Leadership Mission to Israel. Upon their return the newly energized participants have offered several programs for our community and have promised to keep up their outreach. • Over 35 young leaders from Nashville, Hadera-Eiron Israel, and our 10 Partnership2Gether Southeast Consortium cities gathered in Nashville to become inspired to “take the next step” of leadership in their Jewish communities. Next year’s Leadership2Gether program will be during Purim 2019. • Twenty-five Federation leaders traveled on the Nashville CommUNITY Trip: Argentina 2018 organized by the Jewish Federation. Following the devastating economic crisis in 2000, our community was able to witness the successful economic turnaround in the Argentinian Jewish community made possible by ongoing Federation support for critical services in their time of need. *As of 6/6/18

BEST JEWISH NASHVILLE
Building on the successes of Best Jewish Nashville, Best Jewish Nashville 2.0 sets forth a five-year planning blueprint Guided by the results of the 2015 Jewish Community Study conducted by the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University, and the leadership of Carol Hyatt and Steve Hirsch, over 50 leaders worked in concert to identify unmet needs, vulnerable populations, and areas requiring increased focus. The Best Jewish Nashville 2.0 Impact and Innovation committees offered critical thinking and creative approaches to meet our most pressing challenges. The result is a five-year planning blueprint summarized below. Promoting Volunteer and Newcomer Outreach and Engagement
Educating the Broader Community
OUR SUCCESSES | 2017-2018
Enhancing Outreach and Services to the Poor and Nearly Poor Building Community-Wide Bridges Through Social Justice Providing Community-Wide Leadership Development and Training
Community Building Within the Jewish Community
Educating Donors and Inspiring Philanthropy
Offering Programs and Services Beyond the Geographic Core
Increasing Israel Advocacy Through Travel Experiences
Engaging Those for Whom Jewish Life is Too Costly
Jewish Federation and our community partners are hard at work addressing these needs but we cannot do it without your help. Our newcomers receptions take place quarterly and offer an opportunity for those new to Nashville to meet other newcomers and people from our community, to mingle and to get all the information they need about living in Music City. At the reception, Nashville newbies meet with volunteers from our community, called Welcoming Ambassadors, who have volunteered to join with the Jewish Federation in reaching out to the newly arrived.

Steven Brosvik, Nashville Symphony COO, Mark Freedman, and Alan D. Valentine, Nashville Symphony President and CEO
The Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee partnered with the Nashville Symphony to bring the Violins of Hope, a collection of restored instruments played by Jewish musicians during The Holocaust, to Nashville to facilitate a citywide dialogue about music, art, social justice and free expression. These instruments, restored by Amnon Weinstein, survived concentration camps, pogroms and many long journeys to tell remarkable stories of injustice, suffering, resilience and survival.

OUR SUCCESSES | 2017-2018
“
NowGen strives to build and sustain a lifelong commitment to Jewish life and leadership by providing opportunities to build friendships and take part in events to create a thriving Jewish community in Nashville and Middle Tennessee for generations to come.
The Jewish Federation, through NowGen, has created a strong community for young, Jewish Nashvillians. That community is here to welcome newcomers who need a network, to provide a Shabbat dinner to those looking to observe, and to create an opportunity to engage in social outreach for those looking to give back. I’m extremely grateful for the support that the Federation provides NowGen and am proud of the progress we have made as a young Jewish community.

“
NowGen’s Annual Rosh Bash Party. With over 200 attendees, this is the best introduction to the young professional Jewish community in Nashville.
I chose to take on a leadership role because the Jewish community in Nashville has given us so much. It’s vibrant and expanding, but like anything, it needs our support in order to thrive. We are small but strong, and we need to invest in the Federation so that future generations will be able to find their homes in Nashville and put down roots as well.

“ FINANCIAL RESOURCES
Without a doubt, looking after one another is life’s whole purpose. Our gift to the Book of Life is our way of expressing how we feel about our Jewish community – it is a pay-it-forward feeling. Giving back financially is one method of personifying our feelings. It allows us to impact positively on this generation and the next. We know that our handful of dollars is more than just money. Rather, our small contribution translates to a vial of medicine, a course for the general community on anti-Semitism, a healthy meal, and a Jewish existence. Moreover, with the two of us coming from distinctly different backgrounds, we want to ensure that our values of inclusivity transfer to future generations. Breaking barriers in thought, and fostering acceptance of others while providing a Jewish choice, are paramount to the survival of all.

The Lori Ann Fishel Fund of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Foundation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee was established by the Fishel Family to honor Lori’s independent spirit. The family wants others to have the same opportunities that Lori had in life that provided her access to and acceptance in the community. The goal of the Lori Ann Fishel Fund is to provide incentive grants (to offset costs) to help individuals with disabilities to travel, participate in programs, or pursue hobbies and interests in order to enrich their lives and encourage independence. The incentives may be used to attend camps, retreats, concerts, lectures, conferences, and other enriching experiences. The incentive grant is designed to help defray costs of travel, registration, and meals as well as providing an aide or companion, if needed. All incentive grants will be paid as a reimbursement of costs. Go online to www.jewishnashville.org/fishelfund Donations can be made to any of these funds or you can establish your own funds. Compassion. Strength. Leadership. A deep commitment to the Jewish community. These women embody all of these values. They each created a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE), by an established charitable gift of at least $100,000 in their name. This endowment is designed to provide ongoing support of Federation. A LOJE lights the way for family and community. Helping to illuminate Jewish life well into the future. Burning bright for all who are in need.
