ADEL NEIGHBOURHOOD FORUM We have now reached the final processes in producing the Adel Neighbourhood Plan on land development and the related issues. The Plan has been revised and amended following local consultations and we plan to hold a series of meetings in local premises: the dates of which will be widely publicised. This is an important stage for the Adel Neighbourhood Plan, offering local people, businesses and other organisations the opportunity to influence the form and content of the document before it is submitted to Leeds City Council in autumn 2016. The Plan will then be submitted to 12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

an Independent Inspector to ensure it meets the necessary legal requirements and will then proceed to the most important stage - a local referendum at which the people of Adel, will have the ultimate say. For the Plan to be ‘made’ and become part of the Leeds City Local Development Plan, a simple majority of over 50% must vote in its favour. SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

Hurrah, the days are becoming longer and the nights shorter. Summer is just around the corner, and everywhere plants, trees and shrubs are starting to grow and flower. To start with, keep on top of the weeding – since dandelions and bitter cress seem to be springing up and flowering everywhere. Then remember to trim the lawn every week, partly for the exercise and also to make it look good. Now towards the middle or end of the month, depending on the weather, plant out your bedding plants, dahlias, chrysanthemums, sweet peas and other exotics. In your vegetable area, start sowing all types of beans, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers. If you sow small quantities every two to three weeks, you will avoid a glut in the middle of summer. This also applies to all the other vegetable crops you are growing, except for potatoes which should be planted altogether. As the flowers fade on your spring shrubs like forsythia, and flowering currants, prune them lightly to maintain their shape. Rhododendron and azalea shrubs should have their dead flowers picked off, to allow the shrubs to develop next years flowering wood. Many flowering perennials, such as delphiniums and lupins are growing away well, and it is a good idea to insert your supports now to stop them being damaged by high winds. Also look out for slugs, snails, greenfly etc, as this mild winter has increased their numbers, and they will be looking eagerly at your favourite plants. Take whatever type of precautions you think most appropriate, 18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

and then in addition spray your roses against black spot and rust at least every four weeks. Primroses and polyanthus have flowered magnificently this year, in many different colours. Once the flowers have finished, if you wish to increase your stock, lift and divide the plants and replant them as quickly as possible. As the tulip season starts to finish, remember to deadhead all your many types of bulbs, giving them a good feed of fertiliser to build them up for next year. If your grape hyacinths are spreading too much, start to dig any out that have strayed after flowering.
