WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 28 of Suburban Magazine. There have been many busy people this past month or so planning and hosting community events and fairs. Lovely that people are happy to give their time for the benefit of their towns and villages and raise funds for very deserving causes by doing so. We have included some follow up photos and snippets in this edition on some of these events. Summer is still to come so there should be plenty in the next edition or two. Had a couple of lovely photos sent in by readers this month so have included one or two of these as well in the magazine. Always happy to receive these and try and include wherever possible.
Thank you for your continued support - either through advertising, editorial or readers photo’s etc. We are now working on edition 29 which will deadline 30th June. Thank you Rachel Morgan Editor

ABANDONED DOG TESSA READY TO FIND HER FOREVER HOME Dogs Trust Leeds is looking for a very special home for Tessa, the 12-year-old Terrier who made headlines around the world after she was found in a field with a bag of food and a note saying ‘I don’t need a dog’. Tessa has recovered from her heartbreaking ordeal with plenty of TLC from her carers at Dogs Trust Leeds and is now ready to find her forever home. Tessa came into the Rehoming Centre approximately double her ideal weight so is on a special weight-loss programme to shift the pounds. Despite her ordeal, she has settled in well

KEEP YOUR DOG WELL THIS SUMMER Article provided by Hope Pastures
Just like us, our dogs’ bodies are made up of about 80 percent water. This water is vital to their health and helps with their digestion, circulation, waste filtering (we all know what we mean here!) and body temperature regulation. Dehydration is when your dog’s fluid levels drop to less than normal, due to either drinking less or increased loss of fluid. Fluid loss can be due to overheating in hot weather, to an obvious health reason, such as vomiting or diarrhoea, or to a sign of a more serious condition. Elderly dogs, pregnant dogs and nursing dogs are also more likely to become dehydrated. If your dog is dehydrated, they can suffer many problems, including kidney and heart damage, so it’s important to make sure they are always well hydrated. Signs your dog is dehydrated: • • • • •
Sunken eyes Loss of appetite Dry mouth Lethargy and depression Loss of skin elasticity – gently pinch a little skin on your dog’s back or head. If they’re well hydrated the skin will spring back into place quickly when you release it. If they’re dehydrated it will return more slowly – in serious cases, not at all (note – if your dog is very thin or very fat, their skin may return more slowly anyway.)
There are certain health conditions, such as kidney failure and diabetes, which can cause your pet to pass urine in larger volumes and more frequently than normal. Although they drink more, this isn’t usually enough to make up for the fluid they are losing through their urine, so they become dehydrated. If you notice any changes in their urination or drinking habits, it’s important to have your pet checked over by the vet. Dogs can also become dehydrated if they become too hot or don’t have sufficient water available – we all know we shouldn’t leave dogs locked in hot cars on hot days, but other hot spaces (such as conservatories) can be just as bad, as can long, hot walks without the opportunity to drink any water. If your dog does become dehydrated you must 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
take them to your vet immediately – they can give them intravenous fluid to re-hydrate them and help to limit any damage to their organs. How to prevent dehydration: A dog needs to drink about an ounce of water for every pound of weight daily, but may need more with exercise, if the weather is warm, or if they’re taking certain medications. • • •
• • • • •
Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh, clean water all the time. Make sure you wash your pet’s water bowl every day to prevent bacteria forming. Don’t buy a water bowl that’s too big for your dog – they may only be able to drink water part way down. A bowl holding about twice the amount your pet needs is about right. Use a water bowl your dog can’t knock over. A wide, weighted underside is best. If you notice your pet is drinking less than usual, check their mouth for sores or foreign objects, such as burrs or sticks. NEVER leave your dog in an enclosed, hot space, like a car. On long car trips, take bottles of water from home with you. On long walks or play times, take along a water bottle for your dog– dogs sweat through panting, which dries out their mouths. You can use your own water bottle or a special portable dog bottle – the picture is an example of one made by Petsafe. This one is easy to fill from a tap, reusable, washable and has a clip so it’s easy to carry. It can even be frozen or folded if needed. Petsafe have donated these as prizes for the Hope Pastures Fun Dog Show on Sunday 16th July, so take your best friend along and have a look at them here – you may even win one!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Oakwood and Meanwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show
how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A SETTLED SPRING It’s not that often that I’m able to say that the spring months have been settled and good for breeding birds but, thankfully, this is such a year. I know that we’ve had some chilly days but what makes things difficult for breeding birds is the combination of cold, wet and windy weather. So far, any rain we’ve had has been on calm days. We’ve also had lots of sunshine. As a result, it appears that our breeding season in the Leeds area is a little ahead of schedule. Already I’m seeing birds change their behaviour as if they are preparing for their moult. Soon, our parks, woodlands and gardens will be filled with the sound of fledgling birds. Keep those garden feeders topped up and watch how the young birds learn to balance as the feeders move in the breeze – always a joy to see. In the first week of May, one group of birds arrived bang on time at their nest sites. These were the Gledhow swifts which breed in boxes with web cams. This allows us to see exactly when birds come to roost each evening, when eggs are laid and how chicks develop. We’re learning so much from these nest sites and we’re able to record all types of behaviour. If you’re interested in attracting swifts to your house or observing the swifts in Gledhow then do get in touch. I’ll be posting videos and information on the Leeds Swifts Facebook and Twitter pages or visit startbirding.co.uk/leeds-swifts/ Another species that is making a come-back in the Leeds area is the dipper. I’m spending as much time as I can watching known nesting areas and checking streams and becks to look for newly established pairs. Dippers start singing in January and, weather permitting, can start breeding as early as February. This year’s good weather seems to have given them a head start and it appears that most chicks have already fledged. I really would appreciate hearing about any dipper sightings in the Leeds postcode area so that I can record them on my waterways map. I’ve been running lots of bird song walks since March in the hope that I can teach more people how to identify birds by sound. There are only a few weeks in the year when I can do this so I try to fit in as many walks as possible and offer free walks for local groups. If you’d like to book a walk for next year then contact me to make arrangements. It’s a great way to get people interested in your 10 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Dippers - making a comeback in the Leeds area
local area. If you’d like to learn bird song at home then here’s a repeat of the tip I gave you last year. It will help you to recognise well used phrases, pitch, rhythm and specific sequences as well as helping you to extend your peripheral hearing. When a bird is holding a territory, it will sing and pause to listen to its neighbours. Pick out a particular song and listen carefully. When the bird stops singing, see if you can hear the same song being repeated from elsewhere. You don’t have to worry about naming the bird at this stage. Once you can recognise pitch, rhythm and specific sequences, you will easily find a way to label each one by using apps or CDs. This time last year I was telling you about the first Leeds Birdfair at Rodley Nature Reserve. I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be running the fair again this year on Saturday 24th June from 9:30am to 4pm. Collectively we’ll be celebrating the wonderful wildlife and green spaces of Leeds. I’ll be exhibiting and running a bird song walk at 2pm and there will be lots of other events for adults and children throughout the day. Come and meet the conservation organisations, Friends Groups and wildlife businesses that operate in and around Leeds or just enjoy a visit to one of the best nature reserves in our area. Look out for more news via www.startbirding.co.uk/ leeds-birdfair/, or on Facebook and Twitter @ LeedsBirdfair. You’ll also be able to see videos from last year to give you flavour of what to expect. Tall trees in deep shadow surrounded the tiny patch of sunlight in which she had emerged. She stretched, trying to make her colourful attire more visible. Suddenly footsteps, running, crunching through Autumn’s leftovers. Then, a child’s voice, excited, happy: “Look mummy, I’ve found the first crocus of Spring!”

ROWLAND DING, YORKSHIRE AVIATOR (1885-1917): HIS LIFE AND ACHIEVEMENTS Rowland Ding was the chief test pilot for Blackburn Aircraft Co on Roundhay road. Blackburn test pilot W Roland Ding at the controls of a Blackburn White Falcon in Roundhay park
Rowland Ding's death and commemorates his extraordinary life and achievements, setting them in the context of the times in which he lived, and the early days of flying in and around Leeds. During the first decade of powered flight in England, Rowland Ding emerged as one of the best-known and prolific pilots of his day. By early 1917 he was reputed to have flown more types of aeroplane than anyone else alive. He was a local hero, a test pilot for the Blackburn Aircraft Company, one of the major aircraft manufacturers of the day, and operated his own flying school at Lake Windermere. However, on Saturday 12 May that year, tragically Ding crashed and died, in attempting a second loop-the-loop as he flew a government-designed BE2c biplane during a flying display in Roundhay Park.

ALWOODLEY REVIEW Cllr Neil Buckley – Alwoodley Ward
If you see SID… SID is coming to Alwoodley. In fact, two SIDs are coming. SID stands for Speed Indication Device and it is the proper technical name for the screens attached to lampposts that grin at you when you drive past them within the speed limit and scowl when you are over the top. In the beginning, there will be one on Shadwell Lane and one on King Lane, because these are the two roads
16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
in the ward about which we receive most speeding complaints. The sort we are buying are movable and when they become less effective in one place we can move them somewhere new. We are told they will be put in place ‘during the summer’; please let us know if you think they are working. Thanks to all those who took the time to object to the inclusion of the Tree Tops building and sports fields on a list of possible places for new 400-pupil school for Roundhay children. I trust we don’t need to say which side we are on, but for the avoidance of doubt we think it is inappropriate (the
well-used football pitches and the centre in use six times a week), dangerous (all those cars twice a day), insensitive (the assisted living complex next door) and too far from Roundhay (across the Ring Road). In case we are not being clear, I would just say that we are against it.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
June is bursting out all over, with the grass, trees and flowers benefiting from the last few weeks of wet and warmth. This means we are extra busy, cutting the grass on a regular basis, and trying to keep on top of the weeds – which seem to grow faster than anything else in the garden. The dahlias and chrysanthemums you planted last month will be growing strongly, and now is the time to pinch out the leading shoots to make the plants bushier and give you more flowers. The leaves from all your lovely bulbs are slowly finishing, which means watering them now with a high potash feed for a few weeks, (like tomato fertiliser) to build them up ready for next year’s dazzling display. Looking around your borders, are there any bare patches? If yes, there is still time to pop in some more summer bedding plants and a few low growing perennial plants. Then how about taking a few cuttings, roses, geraniums, fuchsias – in 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
fact any plant or shrub is worth trying. The start of summer is an exciting time, especially when looking at the fruit and vegetables you have planted. Thinking of the tastes and aromas, makes you feel good and makes your mouth start to water in anticipation. It is important to feed your tomatoes, cucumbers and melons etc as they grow, and also protect them from any wild life in the area. This applies especially to your strawberry plants, fruit trees and bushes – which will attract all the birds in your neighbourhood to the swelling fruit. Similarly, net all your brassicas and keep a close eye out for summer caterpillars. Potatoes are starting to grow rapidly, due to the recent rains, and it is important to draw earth up around the stems to encourage a better crop. Thinking of next year, this is the ideal time to sow seeds of wall flowers, sweet William and other bi annual plants, for pricking out and flowering next year. Blackberries, raspberries and other hybrid berries will be making new canes at this time, for flowering and fruiting next year. Make sure you tie them in securely, to avoid any wind damage ruining your future enjoyment.

HELP! WE NEED TRUSTEES! Leeds Weekend Care Association (also known as Weekenders Club) is a local independent organisation which runs four projects, all committed to enhancing the lives of disabled children and young people, and their families. We are a Registered Charity, supported by Leeds Social Care, and our service is offered citywide to those families and carers whose children would benefit from our projects, at the same time providing a short break from caring for their children who have inclusive needs. The important work we do provides fun activities in the form of short breaks in a secure environment with highly trained staff. Leeds Weekend Care Association is seeking new trustees to join our Board who can contribute to the future development of the organisation. We would really value your involvement, particularly if you have the skills in HR or Employment Law, as well as the capability and commitment to help us to: As a trustee your role would be to:• • •
ensure that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction; and is focused on achieving these; be responsible for the performance of the

• • • •

act as guardian of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application; ensure that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard.
