WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS It has been lovely over the past week to have seen ducklings and swans nesting at Yeadon Dam. Very nice to see and I am sure that many other areas will have the same. Any photos would be great to see (hopefully we will be able to print a few in our next edition). We are pleased to have quite a few local community events and carnivals in this month’s edition and hopefully they are all well supported and enjoyed by many (once again photos are always appreciated). If you have any submissions for consideration for our June edition, please email details to editorial@suburbanleeds.co.uk or call Rachel on 0113 819 8141. Many thanks to our valued advertisers and contributors. We will now be working on edition 28 which will deadline on 26/05/17. Thank you Rachel Morgan, Editor

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Guiseley, Otley, Menston, Yeadon, Rawdon and Apperley Bridge areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little
bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

DEDICATED DUO FIND FOREVER HOME You may remember best friends five-yearold Siberian Huskies, Mishka and Darren, who were looking for a forever home together? Well, the Dogs Trust Leeds team are preparing to say a fond farewell to them as they have found their special someone. Can you help a Trailhound be homeward bound? Dogs Trust Leeds is hoping to sniff out a forever home for a ten-year-old Trailhound. Toby arrived at the York Road rehoming centre in January having been retired from hound trail racing, but he’s definitely not ready to rest his paws just yet! Despite being an older gentleman he still has lots of energy and loves nothing more than getting out and about for a good, long walk – he can go for miles! He is also proof that you can teach an older dog new tricks as he loves his food and will do whatever is asked for a tasty treat!
Toby loves his human pals, including Canine Carer at Dogs Trust Leeds Suzie Douglass.
He loves being around his two-legged friends and he has lived with a cat before so may well be able to live with a feline friend. He might take a little time to adjust to living in a home but he can live with a placid canine companion who could show him the ropes and help him find his paws. He is used to having lots of company so at first he would benefit from having owners who are around most of the time so he isn’t home alone. He can live with older children and would be a lovely addition to any family. If you think you could offer Toby his ideal home, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. You can also find out more at www.dogstrust.org.uk

EXCEPTIONAL RESULT FOR ROTARY EGG HUNT Aireborough Rotary’s fourth Easter Egg Hunt at Rodley Nature Reserve proved an all-round winner despite the disappointing weather. More than 300 children completed the course by collecting the six tokens and selecting their well deserved prize at the end. As a result of donations and a well-stocked tombola boasting 135 Easter Eggs, more than £1100 was raised for Rotary charities, including the Martin House Hospice. For many attending, this was also an opportunity to tour the Reserve and see the massive amount of work carried out by volunteers to repair the flood damage of Christmas 2015, partially helped by a Rotary grant. Much interest was also shown in seeing the contents of an Aquabox, which provides highly effective water and humanitarian aid around the world following disasters. Aireborough Rotary is proud to supply more than 20 of these life-saving boxes every year. The Rotary Club is grateful to Marks and Spencer (Pudsey and Briggate), Morrisons (Guiseley, Horsforth and Yeadon) Sainsbury’s (Otley) and Thorntons (LS1) for donating

OUR SWIFTS NEED YOUR HELP The first week of May is the traditional arrival time for swifts at their nest sites in Leeds. It’s an exciting and uplifting time for swift lovers, especially if they know they have swifts nesting at their house. The first sign that swifts have returned to breed is the sound of their wonderful piercing scream which they make to acknowledge an established colony. Each returning bird circles the nest site before flying into the exact hole it used last year. As more birds arrive and return to their nests, our skies are alive with tumbling, black, scythe-like shapes. Screams of joy fill the air and summer is finally here. I hope I’ve painted a picture that some of you are still experiencing but I’m guessing this is just a distant memory for most of the readers of this magazine. Sadly, swifts have suffered a drastic decline and this is entirely the fault of humans. We’ve blocked up the holes in our roofs, we’ve fitted PVC soffits and boards and installed cavity wall insulation. We’ve hermetically sealed ourselves into our homes without a thought to the homes of other living creatures that share our space. To make things worse, our councils have destroyed entire colonies with their regeneration schemes and very little consideration has been made for swifts when planning new housing initiatives. Mostly this has been done out of ignorance and in some cases by turning a blind eye, but thankfully the situation is reversible. You’ll be pleased to hear that we can fill our skies with swifts once more with a little investment, a lot of patience and by raising our awareness about these fabulous creatures. A couple of years ago I set up Leeds Swifts which is now part of a nationwide network of swift groups. We meet regularly and also link to swift experts and enthusiasts around the world. Together we are aiming to ‘keep our skies alive’ by educating people about swifts and encouraging as many people as possible to provide new homes for these wonderful birds. Here’s how you can help: 1.
Firstly, you need to be able to identify swifts correctly. Swifts appear completely black. They have ridiculously long wings, make a piercing screaming sound and they do not perch. They don’t build visible nests, instead they disappear
12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
young swift in box
into cracks and crevices. They are often confused with swallows or house martins which build a visible nest out of mud, inside barns or attached to buildings. Swallows and martins show lots of white on the underside of their bodies. House martins also have a white rump. 2.
Swifts can be very secretive around the nest site and often people have no idea that they have swifts nesting at their house. Listen out for swifts screaming near to your house and contact Leeds Swifts if you see any screaming parties or you see swifts looking like they are trying to get under a roof.
3.
Contact Leeds Swifts (on Facebook, Twitter or www.startbirding.co.uk/leeds-swifts/) if you’d like to attract swifts to nest at your house. This involves putting up some swift nest boxes and playing swift ‘love songs’ at the right time of the year to attract newly maturing birds to prospect for next year’s breeding sites. We can provide all the advice and information you need to get you started or check out Swift Conservation www.swift-conservation.org or Action for Swifts http://actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk/
4.
Visit Leeds Swifts at this year’s Leeds Birdfair on Saturday 24th June at Rodley Nature Reserve to learn more about these wonderful birds and how you can help to change the future for swifts.

MORE ON BUSES, LEISURE CENTRE REFURBISHMENT, AND NUNROYD PARK Cllr Paul Wadsworth, Rawdon and Guiseley Ward.
Three quick updates this month, which I hope you’ll find useful. At the beginning of the year, I mentioned I was keen to get to the bottom of a number of the bus problems in our area, and had been meeting with the people at First Bus to discuss how to address residents’ concerns about reliability and other issues. The main concerns relate to the numbers 33, 33A and 97. Now I’m pleased to tell you we have arranged a public meeting for local people to come along, ask questions and listen to representatives from First. This meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday 19th June, 7.00pm-9.00pm at Yeadon Town Hall. I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in this issue to attend and take this opportunity to put across their views to First as well as listen to what we’re trying to do to tackle the problems. Next, I can let you know that Aireborough Leisure Centre’s pools will be closed from 26th May, with the refurbishment works at the centre due 14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
to start a few weeks after that. The works are set to take until mid-January 2018 to complete, but hopefully we will have a much improved leisure centre when they are finished. Finally, if you’re looking for somewhere to exercise whilst the pools are closed, why not check out the newly installed adult exercise equipment at Nunroyd Park? My Guiseley and Rawdon ward colleagues and I have worked with the Parks department to upgrade the paths in the park, and also supported the introduction of the new keep fit area, which will hopefully help local people to keep fit as well as enjoying everything else the park has to offer.

With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
May is a wonderful month, with lambs gambolling in the fields, and many shrubs and trees showing leaves and blossom. There are also many spring flowering plants still in bloom, making everyone feel happy and excited. Your dahlia tubers will have sprouted well, so try taking a few cuttings to increase the stock of your favourite plants. Separate the new growth from just outside the tuber, then insert them into a good pot of compost and keep them warm and moist until rooted. You could also try taking cuttings of chrysanthemums, separating new shoots with a small amount of roots from the parent plant and placing them in a new pot. As the weather warms up towards the end of May, start to plant out all your frost tender plants, such as dahlias, geraniums, bedding plants – and everything you started from seed earlier in the year. UNLESS, a further frost is forecast, in which case you may need some horticultural fleece to protect them.
The taste of home grown tomatoes in heavenly, and with so many different varieties available you must try one or two of as many kinds as you have room for. This also applies to the small cucumbers, which are ideal for just one or two meals. Then thinking about plants growing up canes, all your sweet peas will be heading upwards at a good rate, which means regular tying in and dead heading to keep them flowering all summer. In this warmer weather, all the individual garden pests will multiply at an astonishing rate, so spray regularly each month with a propriety insecticide/fungicide or more often with a soft soap solution. Then look out for slugs and snails which love to eat the soft emerging foliage of hostas, delphiniums and lupins to name a few, and take appropriate action.

SUMMERTIME IN OTLEY Article by James Ellis of All About the Story
Otley is gearing up for a bumper summer season. Whatever the time of year, there’s always a good time to visit the historic town - here are our top five reasons to Make a Day of It. History & heritage Otley Chevin, the forest escarpment that overlooks the town, is home to some of the oldest Paleolithic rock art in the Britain. Otley hosted Oliver Cromwell’s army before the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor (it’s said his troops drank the town dry before marching on to victory), and is the birthplace of renowned cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. The very stone that built the Houses of Parliament was mined here, while romanticist painter JMW Turner was inspired to paint some of his greatest works in the town. The Wharfedale Printing Press, meanwhile, revolutionised the printing industry in the mid-19th century, allowing mass printing production for the first time. Great outdoors Lizzie Deignan (nee Armitstead), Danny Care, Georgia Coates, the Brownlee brothers… Otley and its surrounding countryside have been the training ground that honed the skills of world champions, Olympic athletes, Gold medal winners and England internationals alike. 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Visit for magnificent cycling on roads that hosted the professionals in the 2014 Tour de France, incredible walking and hiking on the cusp of the Yorkshire Dales, horse riding on the Chevin and boating on the River Wharfe. Family fun Otley was home to one of the first family-friendly
venues in Leeds. Tittybottle Park was named after the Victorian mothers and nannies who would nurse infants in a relaxed setting by the River Wharfe. The pretty, landscaped park is still a favourite today and is home to a beautiful mosaic created by local schoolchildren. Just across the water is the larger Wharfemeadows Park,

hosting more landscaped gardens, a well-equipped playground, skate park, tennis courts and large, open spaces for a game of rugby, football or kwik cricket. Gallows Hill Nature reserve offers a variety of birds, insects and amphibians and has a pushchair-friendly path round. Regular family based activities are held there. Unique shopping Farmers have been selling their goods in Otley for almost 800 years and that proud tradition continues today with a thrice-weekly market and a monthly specialist farmers’ market. There are three local butchers offering meat reared on the
surrounding farms of North Yorkshire, and prize-winning bakers providing scrumptious bread, while a visit to the town’s nationally renowned chocolatier is a must. The shops on the cobbled lanes around the town provide all manner of artisan shops: vintners, beer specialists and traditional sweet shops, alongside fine jewellers, gift shops and antiques. If you’re into art, you’re in for a treat – Otley is home to many fine galleries displaying original works. Café Culture, Great pubs & incredible art Otley is home to a great number of pubs, some of which date back to the Middle
Ages. The town also hosts a number of cool cafes, from the 1950s-themed Pink Teapot, to Bloomfield Square, owned by Terrorvision lead singer Tony Wright and home to a Letterpress printing workshop offering short courses. For a small market town, Otley is also home to a wide range of artists and venues. Matthew Hedley Stoppard is the UK’s only town poet, Jen Birch leads the unique Otley Ukulele Orchestra and Opera North singer Sally Egan is the head of women’s singing group Sally’s Army. Venues include the Courthouse arts centre with its original police cells still in tact, Rocca music bar and Kork’s – a wine bar with regular live gigs. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 25

YEADON SCHOOL GOES PURPLE4POLIO In mid-November SS Peter and Paul Primary School, Yeadon shared with eight other Aireborough Primary Schools in planting 5000 purple crocus bulbs supplied by the Rotary Club of Aireborough. Every child receiving the polio vaccine worldwide has their little finger coloured purple. In April the whole school went a step further by choosing Polio Eradication as their Easter charity and having a ‘dress up in purple’ day (or whatever they could find closest to purple) and raised the magnificent sum of £209. President Graham Davies accompanied the Club’s Community Chair Barry Bootland to thank pupils for their imaginative donation. When Rotary International began the project in the 1980s there were 1,000 cases a day worldwide, in the whole of 2016, cases totalling 37 in number were found in the last three countries – ‘We are this close!’ is now the message but the fight goes on. Aireborough Rotary Club’s next fundraising project is the Annual Sponsored Charity Walk ‘You Walk It – We Run It’ on Saturday 20 May.

THE DAY OF THE WEDDING by Basil John
‘John …’ his mum is calling across from the far corner of the kitchen, ‘… what if lots of people come back here after the ceremony?’ she is clearing away the breakfast things and has turned to him with a concerned expression on her face, prompting some re-assurance. ‘What’s to worry about Mum, the place is as clean as a new pin including all the cups, saucers and plates. And there’s loads of stuff in the larder … and Tea and Coffee … and milk? There is a pause, while she considers that John will not be coming back today; that, by this evening, he will be married, and will, with a select few friends and his lovely wife be at their new home and that tomorrow she will wake to a quiet and, apart from herself, empty house. ‘It’s the hallway floor’ she blurts ‘I’m sure it’s not safe … all those people … you know the boards hiding beneath the lino are very springy and I can just see your uncle Harold and Jack; and your Aunt Nanne; and Uncle Bert and Florrie and Hilda … everyone coming in by the front door and wiping their feet on the mat to find themselves standing in a pile of splinters with only their heads sticking out, having gone through.’ John could not help smiling, making his Mum continue ‘…stop it …it’s not funny … 28 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Agreed, your uncle Jack would laugh out loud … he can make a joke out of anything … but their clothes … they will be in their best clothes… for the wedding … Your Wedding.’ It is just before nine AM; The Wedding is at two fifteen … there are woodworking tools in a back room and wood a-plenty (too fine for mending floors) among part completed furniture designed and made by John and destined for his new home, but still waiting for an old school friend with an HGV licence and ‘sometimes’ access to a flat-bed lorry. It’s often useful to have a friend with access to a flatbed lorry even though, for this purpose, a Ford Thames van might have been more appropriate. The best man is still some thirty miles away, changing the plugs on his highly tuned Mini, having perfected his umpteenth speech yesterday, a speech he knows he will ignore in favour of an entertaining ad-lib. And in a little while he will be ‘pulled over’ for exceeding the speed limit yet again; and on the same tempting stretch of road as before, but the traffic cop would be the same friendly one; a cop who would, after being informed of ‘The Mission’ would escort the Mini and its enthusiastic driver onward and into a de-restricted zone! The bride to be is wondering where she has ‘hidden’ the ‘Something blue’, but knows in the bottom of her heart that her mum knows. Mums do. Meanwhile her
father is busy looking at his watch to check the time; it’s something he does… all the time … and everyone who knows him wonders why, and imagines that once he must have been late for something really important ... and is now marked for life. The photographer is listening for the telephone … until the last minute … he is a friend of the Groom, but being first and always a news photographer, he is always close to a telephone or listens out for a story … but today, discounting John and Susan’s wedding, it will be a slow news day … and whatever, mobile phones have still to be invented. It is useful to have a reliable friend who can handle a camera or two at a wedding. Later, at the Church and at the Altar, the bride looks, and is, as always ‘amazing’ and when she and her husband-to-be, kneel before the alter, only those in the congregation who are very close will see that her pretty white shoes had cost just One Pound Nine Shillings and eleven pence at Freeman Hardy and Willis… perfect proof that, as well as her elegant white dress, she is wearing ‘Something New’. And her husband? Well, the thumb of his left hand has stopped bleeding and a fresh plaster is hidden safely in his suit pocket. Just in case. So, all is well until all the photographs outside the church have been taken, when he and his ‘Best man’ realise they have forgotten the coins needed to pay the children to unfasten the lychgate and no-one can leave.
