WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 28 of Suburban Magazine. There have been many busy people this past month or so planning and hosting community events and fairs. Lovely that people are happy to give their time for the benefit of their towns and villages and raise funds for very deserving causes by doing so. We have included some follow up photos and snippets in this edition on some of these events. Summer is still to come so there should be plenty in the next edition or two. Had a couple of lovely photos sent in by readers this month so have included one or two of these as well in the magazine. Always happy to receive these and try and include wherever possible.

Thank you for your continued support - either through advertising, editorial or readers photo’s etc. We are now working on edition 29 which will deadline 30th June. Thank you Rachel Morgan Editor

A SETTLED SPRING It’s not that often that I’m able to say that the spring months have been settled and good for breeding birds but, thankfully, this is such a year. I know that we’ve had some chilly days but what makes things difficult for breeding birds is the combination of cold, wet and windy weather. So far, any rain we’ve had has been on calm days. We’ve also had lots of sunshine. As a result, it appears that our breeding season in the Leeds area is a little ahead of schedule. Already I’m seeing birds change their behaviour as if they are preparing for their moult. Soon, our parks, woodlands and gardens will be filled with the sound of fledgling birds. Keep those garden feeders topped up and watch how the young birds learn to balance as the feeders move in the breeze – always a joy to see. In the first week of May, one group of birds arrived bang on time at their nest sites. These were the Gledhow swifts which breed in boxes with web cams. This allows us to see exactly when birds come to roost each evening, when eggs are laid and how chicks develop. We’re learning so much from these nest sites and we’re able to record all types of behaviour. If you’re interested in attracting swifts to your house or observing the swifts in Gledhow then do get in touch. I’ll be posting videos and information on the Leeds Swifts Facebook and Twitter pages or visit startbirding.co.uk/leeds-swifts/ Another species that is making a come-back in the Leeds area is the dipper. I’m spending as much time as I can watching known nesting areas and checking streams and becks to look for newly established pairs. Dippers start singing in January and, weather permitting, can start breeding as early as February. This year’s good weather seems to have given them a head start and it appears that most chicks have already fledged. I really would appreciate hearing about any dipper sightings in the Leeds postcode area so that I can record them on my waterways map. I’ve been running lots of bird song walks since March in the hope that I can teach more people how to identify birds by sound. There are only a few weeks in the year when I can do this so I try to fit in as many walks as possible and offer free walks for local groups. If you’d like to book a walk for next year then contact me to make arrangements. It’s a great way to get people interested in your

Dippers - making a comeback in the Leeds area

local area. If you’d like to learn bird song at home then here’s a repeat of the tip I gave you last year. It will help you to recognise well used phrases, pitch, rhythm and specific sequences as well as helping you to extend your peripheral hearing. When a bird is holding a territory, it will sing and pause to listen to its neighbours. Pick out a particular song and listen carefully. When the bird stops singing, see if you can hear the same song being repeated from elsewhere. You don’t have to worry about naming the bird at this stage. Once you can recognise pitch, rhythm and specific sequences, you will easily find a way to label each one by using apps or CDs. This time last year I was telling you about the first Leeds Birdfair at Rodley Nature Reserve. I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be running the fair again this year on Saturday 24th June from 9:30am to 4pm. Collectively we’ll be celebrating the wonderful wildlife and green spaces of Leeds. I’ll be exhibiting and running a bird song walk at 2pm and there will be lots of other events for adults and children throughout the day. Come and meet the conservation organisations, Friends Groups and wildlife businesses that operate in and around Leeds or just enjoy a visit to one of the best nature reserves in our area. Look out for more news via www.startbirding.co.uk/ leeds-birdfair/, or on Facebook and Twitter @ LeedsBirdfair. You’ll also be able to see videos from last year to give you flavour of what to expect. ABANDONED DOG TESSA READY TO FIND HER FOREVER HOME Dogs Trust Leeds is looking for a very special home for Tessa, the 12-year-old Terrier who made headlines around the world after she was found in a field with a bag of food and a note saying ‘I don’t need a dog’. Tessa has recovered from her heartbreaking ordeal with plenty of TLC from her carers at Dogs Trust Leeds and is now ready to find her forever home. Tessa came into the Rehoming Centre approximately double her ideal weight so is on a special weight-loss programme to shift the pounds. Despite her ordeal, she has settled in well

She is looking for an adult-only home where she is the only pet. Once Tessa has settled into her new home she could be left for a couple of hours but this will need to be built up gradually. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly

feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope, Adel, Rodley, Calverley and Farsley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good

job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of

effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WRITERS’ CLUB info: rbusoiu@yahoo.co.uk

100 words story She knew she disliked him the minute she saw him.

Roger Livesey was an early member of 'Writing on the Wharfe'. A former journalist, he had not written fictional stories before joining the club. He usually writes short items - 100 or 75 word stories, haiku or tanka.

Haiku distant memory fighting to recall your face dementia kills me 100 word story Struggling, she managed to push her head above the surrounding leaves, tremoring in the cold air although the sun was shining brightly. Trapped for so long in the dank dark she had begun to believe she would never get out. Now she had, would anyone find her trapped in this isolated spot? Tall trees in deep shadow surrounded the tiny patch of sunlight in which she had emerged. She stretched, trying to make her colourful attire more visible. Suddenly footsteps, running, crunching through Autumn’s leftovers. Then, a child’s voice, excited, happy: “Look mummy, I’ve found the first crocus of Spring!” 14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Not only carefully manicured, of which she approved, but nail polish for heaven's sake. Then there was the latest, fashionable, expensive man scent. She had watched as he sidled, smarmy smile fixed, up to one attractive woman after another, slushing out a few words, finally arriving at her seat. He towered over her, shirt open three buttons showing a precisely barbered chest. The invitation came; she had agreed. Six months later she still disliked him. Words, "Do you take this man ..." rang in her ears as she turned, and ran. Haiku on remembering the 2,800 unmarked graves of the former 'West Yorkshire Paupers' Lunatic Asylum', Highroyds, on a frosty morning. madness frozen out bones interred together warmed peace buds in waiting Haiku on the death of Leonard Cohen sublime poetry in lyrics of a sad song speaking to my soul

Playing the trout - 75 word story written while sitting in Menston Park watching my neighbour load fishing gear In the hot June sun, the fly arches towards a cooler spot, suspended for a moment then alighting, still yet ominous. Only the midges bite, swooping again and again on bare skin. The daisies behind smile at the sun, a white army, each one bearing his golden shield. Buttercups spread their delicious gold. No rod here, no hook with barb nor tortured fish. Just Schubert’s quintet, spilling with joy from an iPad. Haiku for a loved musician arpeggios sooth minor chords provoke sometimes love flows in and out Reflection I know a grain of what I want to say It’s how to find the words which makes me pause. I would with love your heavy heart address But fear my good intent be misconstrued. The words, as rays from some distorting glass, So oft bounce back, their meaning now corrupt. I would not be so mute in other time Thus quietly I just address your soul And wait our paths to cross in future lives.

GLASS COLLECTION I get a lot of queries asking why the Council cannot collect glass as part of the kerbside collections of waste. The most recent response received from the Waste Management team manager is as follows: “As you might expect, this is primarily a budget issue. If money were no object we might be looking to introduce kerbside glass collections, and indeed food waste collections, across the City, and it remains our aspiration to achieve this ultimately. We have previously considered whether we could include glass within the mix of materials collected in the green bin, but concluded that this would put us at risk of failing to comply with legislative requirement for ‘separate collections’ of recyclable materials due to the resulting deterioration in the quality of the existing materials that might be expected (i.e. contamination with broken glass). Conversely, providing a separate, stand-alone kerbside collection of glass would involve a significant additional cost to the Council, even taking account of the avoided disposal costs of removing glass from the black bins.” Cllr. FARSLEY FOOTBALL END OF YEAR ROUND UP It proved to be quite an end to the season for the Club as the Celts Men’s team secured the West Riding County FA Cup for the first time in ten years winning 4-2 on penalties against Tadcaster Albion. There was even more good news as the team also achieved promotion to the Ev0-Stik Premier Division via the Play-Offs in a dramatic 4-2 Extra-time victory over West Yorkshire rivals Ossett Town. Success wasn’t just confined to the Men’s First team, as the Celts Ladies earned promotion to the North East Regional League Premier Division, losing just one of their eighteen league fixtures. The Ladies Under 18s also had a great season achieving a league and cup double, underlining the strength of the women’s section at Farsley. The Ladies though are looking to establish further Open-aged sides and anyone interested should contact Head of Women’s 18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Football Adrian Sparrow, tel: 0113 2557292 (email: adrianjsparrow@yahoo.co.uk) With the football season finished, Throstle Nest hosted two big events in May. The first saw the holding of a Charity match between Leeds General Infirmary and St. James Hospital to raise funds for the Day One Trauma Care Unit. In a fun packed day featuring two matches between the respective hospitals, nearly £1,500 was raised for the Unit. Then in mid-May the Club held its Junior Football Tournament, featuring numerous local boys and girls clubs. It was an incredibly well supported event which ran smoothly thanks to the hard-work of the coaches and a whole host of Club Volunteers, as well as the generous sponsorship of various local businesses. Indeed with the Men’s and Ladies First-teams gaining

promotion, leading to higher profiles within the country and the game next season, why not be part of the journey and consider sponsoring the Club in some form. Farsley Celtic has a range of sponsorship opportunities suitable for individuals, pubs, local, national or international businesses. To find out more about the Club’s various packages, please contact the Club’s Commercial Manager, Michael Binns, tel: 0113 2557292. Whilst football won’t resume at Throstle Nest until July, when pre-season friendlies will commence, the Clubhouse is open during the evenings and the function rooms are also available for hire, bookable through Bar and Facilities Manager, Rob Yardley, tel: 0113 2557292 Paul Hatt Media Manager, Farsley Celtic FC phatt@farsleyceltic.com 07525 188633

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

June is bursting out all over, with the grass, trees and flowers benefiting from the last few weeks of wet and warmth. This means we are extra busy, cutting the grass on a regular basis, and trying to keep on top of the weeds – which seem to grow faster than anything else in the garden. The dahlias and chrysanthemums you planted last month will be growing strongly, and now is the time to pinch out the leading shoots to make the plants bushier and give you more flowers. The leaves from all your lovely bulbs are slowly finishing, which means watering them now with a high potash feed for a few weeks, (like tomato fertiliser) to build them up ready for next year’s dazzling display. Looking around your borders, are there any bare patches? If yes, there is still time to pop in some more summer bedding plants and a few low growing perennial plants. Then how about taking a few cuttings, roses, geraniums, fuchsias – in 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

fact any plant or shrub is worth trying. The start of summer is an exciting time, especially when looking at the fruit and vegetables you have planted. Thinking of the tastes and aromas, makes you feel good and makes your mouth start to water in anticipation. It is important to feed your tomatoes, cucumbers and melons etc as they grow, and also protect them from any wild life in the area. This applies especially to your strawberry plants, fruit trees and bushes – which will attract all the birds in your neighbourhood to the swelling fruit. Similarly, net all your brassicas and keep a close eye out for summer caterpillars. Potatoes are starting to grow rapidly, due to the recent rains, and it is important to draw earth up around the stems to encourage a better crop. Thinking of next year, this is the ideal time to sow seeds of wall flowers, sweet William and other bi annual plants, for pricking out and flowering next year. Blackberries, raspberries and other hybrid berries will be making new canes at this time, for flowering and fruiting next year. Make sure you tie them in securely, to avoid any wind damage ruining your future enjoyment.

HORSFORTH CHILDREN’S CENTRE Parents/Carers and Staff at Horsforth Children’s Centre have been working hard over the last year to raise money to buy equipment for a brand new Community Sensory Room at the Centre. Claire Birch, Manager of the Centre said “We knew that there were no other sensory rooms in Horsforth and that some of our local schools take their pupils to other areas in order to access this type of provision. We had a room that was being used for storage but could be used for so much more”.

24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

So, since last summer, parents/carers and staff have been thinking of lots of ways to get to the target of £2000 which will enable the room to be kitted out to a very high standard. In August, a hardy group of staff and parents/carers took children for a sponsored walk/buggy push in the pouring rain. Then, we were lucky enough to receive a donation from Barlett’s insurance company,

based in Horsforth, and money from the ASDA Holt Park green token scheme. Finally, a very generous grant from the Outer North West Communities Committee has got us up to the total and now we are starting to order equipment. We hope that once the room is finished, we will operate a booking system so that all of our local schools and pre-schools will be able to bring children along to benefit from the sensory experience. If you would like to know more about the Sensory room or any of the activities that are run at Horsforth Children’s Centre, please contact us on 0113 2591786.
