Visitors were entertained by acts including dance academies, a modern choir, an African drumming group and various duos and groups. An array of food and drink was on offer including a food court area complete with a Bar Events UK tepee. The event was based around the theme of St Oswald - as organisers discovered from historical archives that Guiseley used to stage an annual pageant in his honour.
We provide Care services, a sitting service, personal and social support in the community. Our aims are to reduce social isolation and promote independence for adults and their carers within our local area. Areas covered Guiseley, Yeadon, Rawdon, Otley and surrounding areas.
24 hours services, 365 days a year
Codswallop CIC brought even more fun to the party, with a host of family activities including a ‘creation station’, a treasure trail and the chance to meet ‘St Oswald’ and ‘Aidan.’ They also set up an exhibition about St Oswald and about the historical pageants. The exhibition will remain open in St Oswald’s Church until 17 July. This year’s Guiseley Christmas Market and Lights switch on will take place on Sunday, November 26.

NS It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Guiseley, Otley, Menston, Yeadon, Rawdon and Apperley Bridge areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little
bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

PACKING UP EARLY Firstly, a very big THANK YOU to everyone who attended this year’s Leeds Birdfair at Rodley Nature Reserve on Saturday 24th June. It really was lovely seeing so many familiar faces and I really enjoyed hearing how many people were visiting the reserve for the first time. If you weren’t able to make it then you can see a summary of the day’s events via www.startbirding.co.uk/leeds-birdfair/ Remember I was telling you about the settled spring last month and that many of our song birds have been very successful with their chicks? Well there is a downside to that settled spring for us. Have you noticed how quiet it has become recently? Most of our song birds have stopped singing and our woodlands have already become dark and quiet. This happens every year of course but we seem to be a couple of weeks ahead this year which has made my last few bird song walks a little challenging. Still, there is plenty to talk about during those sessions as I explain what is going on for the birds during this time. Once a bird has brought up its brood, and we get past the longest day, its anatomy and physiology changes. The decreasing day length causes a change in the hormonal cycle resulting in the ovaries and testes shrivelling up. They won’t be needed until next year so the body economises and instead, channels its resources to replacing every feather, growing some extra ones and laying down fat for the coming winter months or for a migratory journey. Feathers are moulted in sequence to ensure that there are no bald patches so this can take a few weeks. You’ll notice that small birds become very secretive. They rush from tree to bush without looking around. Thankfully the density of the foliage is at its highest and is perfectly synchronised to provide cover and protection while moulting adults and juveniles are at their most vulnerable. You can help your garden birds during this time by providing energy rich food and by making sure your feeders are close to trees and bushes. Eventually, you’ll be able to see some very brightly coloured, fully moulted birds emerging.
Look for the stripy heads of the grebe chicks
On rivers and lakes, you’ll notice that the male ducks are starting to look brown and dowdy. This is because ducks moult their flight feathers all at once and become flightless. The muted colours keep them well camouflaged until they grow new wing and tail feathers. Look for a ring of feathers starting to form around your local lake. This is the best time to collect feathers if you can reach them safely. See if you can find the curly tail feather of a male mallard or some large Canada goose wing feathers. It’s a great way to learn about the structure of feathers and you can mimic the way that birds preen their feathers by separating the strands and seeing if you can put them back together. Some wetland birds are still in the process of raising chicks. Look for the stripy heads of the grebe chicks and you may even see recently hatched ducklings, cygnets and coot chicks. One star bird this spring has been the first breeding record of spoonbills in Yorkshire. It’s not possible to see the nest at Fairburn Ings but, with luck, it won’t be long before the chicks fledge and are on view. Our Gledhow swifts are also busy bring up babies. I’ll be posting video clips of birds in boxes on the Leeds Swifts Facebook page. You can access this via www.startbirding.co.uk/leeds-swifts/ Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. Stockeld Park will also be selling cakes and refreshments, and it will be open at a discounted rate for people who have taken part in the run. Martin House provides care and support to children and young people with life-limiting illnesses throughout West, North and East Yorkshire – along with their families – at its hospice, in hospitals and in their own homes. It costs £20 for adults, £15 for children (five to 15), £50 for a family ticket (two adults,
two children) and group bookings of five or more adults is £15 each. There is also a free goody bag for people who raise more than £50 in sponsorship. You can sign up at www.martinhouse. org.uk, by emailing events@ martinhouse.org.uk or by calling 01937 844569. Bereavement support is offered to families, often for two to three years after their child’s death. We also offer bereavement support to families whose child had a life-limiting condition but did not have the opportunity to use the hospice. There is no cost to any of the families using our services. It costs in excess of £6 million a year to provide this care, the majority of which comes from voluntary donations and fundraising.

AIREBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL This inaugural Festival lived up to all expectations as a new, untested and very challenging event, bringing together harmoniously from the very outset in a working partnership of equals: the Rotary Club of Aireborough, the Parish Church of St. Peter’s, Rawdon and Guiseley Theatre. The main responsibility for the success goes initially to the multi-talented, volunteer committee whose organisational and technical skills produced memorable results for all to see. Over the two days and the V.I.P. evening more than 600 eager patrons attended (seen as a creditable first time response) taking away their branded glasses having enjoyed an excellent choice of 43 beers and 15 ciders as
well as Prosecco and red and white wines. Overall more than £3000 was raised to be shared equally between the three partners. Lively, varied and well received evening entertainment was provided by four local bands Silverlode, Blue Horizon, Little Mistakes and Bluesharks. The partners owe a great debt to all those who either sponsored the 58 barrels, paid for adverts in the Festival programme or produced the publicity material. The most unexpected incident involved the Saturday afternoon arrival of two inveterate Beer Festival devotees, Pat Langford and
Kate Seal. They had heard about the Aireborough event at the Pudsey Beer festival, added it to their diary and subsequently took the train from Doncaster as part of their 35 year hobby of tasting new beers on a weekly basis. They were delighted and surprised to be able to add 15 previously untasted beers to their voluminous and detailed records of thousands of beers as well as passing on tips to the incredulous organisers. Showing that volunteering is alive and well in Aireborough and reflecting the community spirit, all three organisations provided the cheerful labour willing to set up the bar area before moving on to dispense drinks, prepare and serve food, brief staff, greet arrivals and sell the essential token currency. Many of those leaving expressed their thanks and enjoyment promising to tell all their friends and return next year on an already agreed weekend – 15 and 16 June 2018.

REPORTING BACK ON FIRST BUS MEETING Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley and Rawdon Ward
We held a public meeting at Yeadon Town Hall with First Bus on 19th June to discuss the 33, 33A and 97 services. It’s part of a series of consultation events they are running about the future of bus services in North West Leeds. Although the event wasn’t as well attended as I had hoped, there was some useful discussion. One of the big issues that people raised was about “out of service” buses running on routes without any indication when the next bus is due. This often frustrating situation means passengers are left waiting at bus stops while an out of service bus whistles by. Another one may actually be along in a few minutes, but the problem is that the waiting passengers have no way of knowing this. First are aware of the problem and we discussed options for addressing it. Perhaps
a signal or notice on the bus would help, for example. The second part of the meeting discussed the proposals to replace the 97 service, with options to maintain the status quo; run it every 30 minutes; run it as far as Yeadon only; or introduce a new service 17 that would run every 30 minutes. First say a new 17 service would save 10 minutes off the journey time: instead of turning left onto Spen Lane, it would turn right onto Queenswood Drive, then Kirkstall, Cardigan Road, Burley Road, Burley Street, Park Lane and Duncan Street. Full details on all the proposals can be viewed at: https://www.firstgroup.com/leeds/more/ have-your-say-our-services-north-westleeds/yeadon-and-guiseley-route-97 I’d like to thank First Bus for agreeing to come to the event, as well as everyone else who attended and took part. Hopefully we will continue to make progress.

SUBURBAN GARDENS
SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
The recent hot weather has been almost unbelievable, with so much watering to do for pots, baskets conservatories and green houses. It is worth mentioning, it is better to give plants a good soak – rather than small sprinkles of water. Water retaining products are also a worthwhile investment, especially when you are going on holiday. In hot weather, it is better to raise the cutting height on your mowers, as grass slows down its growth and become stressed if cut too close. Later this month, feed the lawn with a specific summer fertilizer, to maintain a strong green sward. The grass will need watering after this treatment, so be ready to run out and apply the fertilizer, just as it starts to rain. The smell of dried herbs is just lovely, and this is the time to make a start when they are growing strongly. Dry them on sheets of brown paper, or in wide containers, and then seal them in airtight jars. Very soon your lavender plants will be flowering, and again you can cut bunches of these flowers for hanging up to dry – and then use them in winter. In the kitchen garden, look at drying off your garlic, shallots and onions as soon as the leaves start to yellow. Dig them up and leave then on the ground for a few days, then store Dalesway_Advert_29.2.16.pdf 1 29/02/2016 indoors with good light and air circulation. The drier they are when stored, the longer
they will last. Pinching out the tops of runner beans and tomatoes when the reach the top of their support, will direct all their energy into producing better crops. Keep sowing and eating your salad crops, as nothing beats the taste of fresh cut lettuce and radishes etc. To maintain you flowering bedding plants and perennials, continue to dead head on a regular basis – cutting out completely the dead stems of lupins, delphiniums and similar tall flowering plants. Roses are showing signs of black spot and other disease, which means you must maintain your spraying pattern of systemic fungus and bug insecticide. Repot cyclamen corms which have been dried off, using fresh compost, and then lightly water to bring them back to life. On the opposite side, continue to feed amaryllis bulbs, before allowing them to dry off for the winter.

LOCAL NEWS KEEPING YOUR CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE THIS SUMMER With the school holidays fast approaching, parents across Leeds will be starting to think about how on earth to keep their children entertained for the long summer break. There are only so many days out, cinema trips and short breaks away you can do before you’ve completely exhausted yourself – and your bank balance – and this is when lots of us rely on technology to keep kids entertained. With more children than ever having access to smart phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers turning to the internet for fun, entertainment and keeping up with friends over the holidays is second nature to most young people. Helen Westerman, campaigns manager for NSPCC North of England, says: “Most of us will happily leave our children to explore the internet and apps, on computers, tablets and mobile phones without checking what they’re up to, or who they’re speaking to. “Quite often we think they’re safe as long as they’re in our sight, or up in their rooms, but children are in as much danger of being approached by strangers online as they are on the street outside. “I don’t want to lose sight of the enormous positive potential the internet holds for children. It offers a great space for children to explore, learn and connect with friends and family– but as parents we should treat it with reasonable caution and make sure we have regular, open conversations with our children about their online lives. “It’s not just about knowing what sites they’re on or who they’re speaking to, although that is a really good start. It’s also about telling your children that they can talk to you if they see anything disturbing or upsetting online.” One of the real worries for parents over the summer holidays can be online bullying. Sometimes bullying issues can spill over into the summer holidays with the internet providing a platform for children to carry on bullying
behaviour even when they’re not in school. When the bullying takes place in the playground it can often be a lot easier to spot the signs, with children’s belongings being ‘lost’ or damaged, physical injuries, being afraid of going to school, not doing as well in their school work, or asking for or stealing money to give to their bullies. There are some signs you can look out for whether bullying is in the ‘real world’ or online. These are: • • •
Being nervous, losing confidence, becoming distressed or withdrawn Problems with sleeping or eating Bullying others
As well as the difficulties in spotting that a child is being bullied online, quite often parents struggle with what to do once they find out their child is being bullied – particularly when they aren’t able to find support from their child’s school during the holidays. Darren Worth, supervisor at Childline Leeds, says: “If you’re not sure about whether your child is being bullied, the best way to start that conversation is by letting them know what bullying is as some children may not see what’s happening to them as bullying. “Let them know they can talk to you about anything, but it’s important to stay calm and listen to them carefully. Sometimes children and young people can feel scared, embarrassed or ashamed about being bullied and they won’t want you to jump to any conclusions or react badly.

“We always like to think our children can talk to us about anything – particularly about any worries they may have – but this isn’t always easy for them. It can be worth reminding them that they can speak to a trained counsellor in Childline, over the phone, online or via our app For Me. “Childline can help them start talking about the problem, and how to find a solution. This can often involve them talking to a parent or other trusted adult who may be able to help.” Sometimes with online bullying, another barrier to parents understanding what is happening for their child is that the online world can be quite confusing. Some online apps allow children to be contacted anonymously, and this can also lead to them being subjected to bullying and other forms of abuse. The NSPCC’s Helen Westerman says: “With new apps coming out all the time, it can be a huge struggle for parents to keep up with the platforms their children use. Once you’ve learned
the difference between a Snapchat Streak and a Periscope live video children and young people have moved onto the next big thing. “There is help available – the NSPCC have teamed up with our partners in O2 to help parents who want to know more about their child’s online world. Net Aware can give you handy tips about the apps they use, and Share Aware can help you start those conversations about what is and isn’t appropriate to share online. “You can also go to your local O2 store where a Guru can help you set up parental controls on their devices for free – whether or not you’re an O2 customer.” For more help and advice on keeping your children safe online go to www.net-aware. org.uk, the Share Aware resources on the NSPCC website or call the NSPCC and O2 helpline on 0808 800 5002. Children and young people can also contact Childline for help on 0800 11 11 or www.childline.org.uk

THE PROMISE: IT WAS GOOD WHILE IT LASTED By Helen Collier
Tonight, I’m not going to bed. Tomorrow I will be out on the moors watching the sun rise on the longest day, marking the fulfilment of a promise to walk every morning at sunrise from the Winter Solstice through to the Summer Solstice. On Thursday, there’ll be a decision to make, should I get up and walk as I have done for close to 180 mornings or turnover, snuggle under the sheets and say, ‘Not today thanks, it was good while it lasted’ Last year had been a difficult year in so many ways, not only the huge shifts in the political world, the tragedy of war in Syria and Yemen but on a very personal level too, my beautiful brother in law finally let go of life after his light began to fade in the summer time. Discombobulated definitely described my state of mind as 2016 began to draw to a close. When I start eating fried egg butties every other meal, I know it’s time to do something. On the eve of the Winter Solstice inspiration came to me, if I was lucky enough to be alive I needed to take care of my health. It had to be done now, no waiting for a New Year’s resolution. I made the promise and give or take the odd day here and there I’ve fulfilled it, not too shabby. Through rain, shine, wind, fog, frost and a sprinkling of snow I’ve woken and gone out to walk at sunrise. During the course of the six months I have discovered many things. I know more about the sun by paying attention to it rather than taking it for granted. I’ve been surprised finding the difference in the time of the sunrise is not the same each day. It starts off around each Solstice with no change and then peaks at 3-4 minutes difference daily at the midpoint in March. The seasons have been fascinating as I‘ve watched winter change to spring followed by the beginning of summer. Of course, I knew different things happen in different seasons but never before have I seen it so closely. The 21st December was a dark and damp morning, what a sorry state the sheep in the field looked. Fast forward to 20th March and I’m looking at the same field, it’s still soggy and damp, there’s a sheep pressed up against a fence to my left. There’s a rock behind it. The rock twitches. The rock wriggles. The sheep notices me and jumps to its feet. The rock jumps. I jump. Another rock jumps. It’s my first lambs of the Spring! If you’d been wandering at dawn in God’s Acre, a local cemetery, on Good Friday you might have been surprised to find me lying out flat on my belly, not
practicing for the afterlife but photographing a carpet of primroses amongst the stones and the graves. What was happening to me!! I was getting hooked on my walks and on catching a photo of what I saw. One of the absolute highlights has been my encounter with deer. Initially my photographs were taken way too late and faraway, producing pictures reminiscent of the children’s book Where’s Wally. Often all that could be seen was a trace of their white bottoms hardly decipherable from the background. This was true until the morning I saw and heard a lone stag bark. At first, I thought he was barking a warning of my approach to other deer but a bit of research informed me he’d clocked me and was barking a warning to me! It all began to get a bit surreal as the next day I met a deer on the old railway track. We looked at each other and then she trotted off to the side to place herself in a beautiful spot for a photograph, framed by trees against the back drop of the golf course. I began to think maybe we had some spiritual affinity. I’ve photographed daffodils, bluebells, foxgloves, catkins, cherry blossom, trees, sunrises, silhouettes and the best photograph was the day I caught the sun sneakily rising through the honeysuckle. It was 4.35am in the morning and only a few steps from my door. These walks have opened my eyes. It’s definitely been good while it lasted and I’m absolutely sure that whilst the walk from the Winter Solstice through to the Summer Solstice comes to an end tomorrow I’ll be starting a new chapter capturing the sunrise from the Summer Solstice through to the Winter Solstice, another promise made in public. If you would like to see Helen’s photographs, search Google for Blipfoto and then search for Catching the Sun
