HOME IS WHERE THE HAPPINESS IS Councillor Rebecca Charlwood is Leeds City Council’s executive member for health, wellbeing and adults. She explains some of the help that is on offer for people as they get older and want ideas to help them continue to live independently. As more of us grow older and live longer, we have more people in Leeds working out what is best for them as they make decisions about later life. Leeds City Council is keen to support people to live their lives as independently as they can. We know this helps people live longer, better quality lives and there is more support and expertise to make this possible. There are all sorts of hints and tips which make it easier to stay at home, rather than live in a care home. There are comparatively simple modifications that can be made to houses which can help you improve the quality of life at home, and the council works closely with other organisations to provide this support. For instance, while you can look at stair lifts to make getting up and downstairs safer and easier, just adding an extra bannister could help too. It is easier to reposition 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

or widen doors for wheelchair access nowadays, and bathrooms can be upgraded with shower seats, bath lifts or a walk-in bath. You might find a kettle tipper handy in the kitchen and it is now easier to get easy access pull-out shelves for cupboards, sinks which can be used from a wheelchair and remote controls now work for all manner of gizmos and gadgets. Assisted Living Leeds [http://www.leeds.gov. uk/c/Pages/assistedLiving/ default.aspx] is a new centre bringing together a range of assistive technology services under one roof for the first time. This currently includes the Leeds Community Equipment Service, Telecare, Blue Badge Assessment and Single Point of Information. If you haven’t heard of Telecare, you may want to find out more about this service to support older and vulnerable

people to live safely and independently through use of simple sensors. The scheme builds on the existing Care Ring pendant alarm system to offer added security at home, with sensors placed around the home or worn as a pendant, watch or belt Telecare can monitor you, a family member, or someone you care for 24 hours a day, by raising an alert if the sensor detects any problems. Many people find getting out and about, being involved in activities or social groups helps both reduce the need for formal care and support and gives additional wellbeing. There’s advice and ideas on the council’s website at http://www.leeds. gov.uk/residents/Pages/ Getting-out-and-about.aspx. We can also tell you how to find facilities and community services that can support you. If you are eligible for financial

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH AND OTHER SAFETY INITIATIVES As Councillors we get regular updates on initiatives that are helping to reduce crime and increase community safety in the area. Community Speedwatch is one initiative that is about to be introduced into the area. This involves local communities and local people can volunteer to be part of the Community Speedwatch team. The local police constable and Inspector in my area are currently training one volunteer who will lead other volunteers and they will co-

ordinate all the activity in the Outer North West area that is considered to be at the lower end of risk. A training package, risk assessment and associated process have also been developed. All four of the police Ward officers in the Outer North West have been trained to use the Speed Indicator Device (SID or smiley face) and they can train other new volunteers. It is hoped that over the next few months there will be a pool of trained volunteers to perform speed watch duties. Councillors have also paid towards “Target Hardening”

measures for residents in our areas. In my area this has resulted in 35 referrals of residents who have asked about crime safety measures they can have installed in their homes and this led to 26 people having financial help towards some work to be done to improve home security. In addition to this some residents also had help from the Care & Repair service in respect of measures to reduce trips and falls in their home and other repairs assistance. Cllr. THE NEW, HORSFORTH COMMUNITY MINIBUS HAS BEEN SIGNED AND DELIVERED Horsforth Minibus Fund, a registered charity providing valuable services to the older residents in the community as well as other groups, gratefully received a cheque from the West Riding Masonic Charity. This generous donation was put together with insurance money to replace their stolen minibus. Many people rely on the services provided, on a not for profit basis, with a small charge to cover running costs, such as shopping trips, days out and much more. 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
