REMOVING DISTANCE AS A BARRIER TO ACCESSING SUPPORT: Candlelighters children’s cancer charity to release their first ever bus in September 2016 Why a bus? Research showed us that many Candlelighters families travel a significant distance to access the facilities of The Square, our family support centre in Leeds city centre. In addition to this, we found that family support in the areas these families came from was lacking compared to that available in areas closer to Leeds. Here at Candlelighters, we want every family to be able to continue accessing support whilst their child is on treatment, after treatment or when the family is bereaved. Yet it can be difficult for some families to visit The Square for many reasons; cost of travel, length of journey or if a family is bereaved, they may not want to visit a place which could trigger emotions and memories. As a result of this research, we are now taking all the best bits of The Square to them- in a place close to home. General information about the bus The Candlelighters bus is a single decker which is separated into three main rooms. Two of these areas act as treatment rooms where families can access a variety of massage treatments and talking therapies. The other room is our cosy reception, complete with seating, coffee and cake. We are also able to merge all three sections of the bus into one so the bigger area can be used when larger support groups choose 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
to meet in their local areas. Not only will we be offering a fantastic range of services for our families, the team on board will also be able to use the bus as a tool to gather research from families across all areas of Yorkshire. This will help us find out how we can support them now and in the future in their local area. What does the bus offer? The bus will offer a range of treatments, including all forms of massage, reflexology and energy balancing. In addition, we will also be taking our talking therapists, Paul and Dianne, on the road. Where are we going to be? Tuesday 27th September; Briggate, Leeds, 10am-6.30pm: We will be on Briggate supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Children will be able to meet Doc McStuffins, pose as a bus driver, have their faces painted and decorate their own GO GOLD for for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Ribbons! Tuesday 11th October; Harrogate, Dragon Road SLCP (behind Asda), 10am-4pm: All forms of massage and energy balancing Wednesday 9th November; McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, York 10am - 4pm St Nicholas Avenue, Fulford, York, YO19 4TA: All forms of massage and energy balancing. Wednesday 16th November; Junction 32 10am-4pm Tomahawk Trail, Glasshoughton, Nr Castleford, West Yorkshire WF10 4FR: All forms of massage and energy balancing
Wednesday 30th November; Bradford City Park 10am-4pm Bradford BD1 1HY: All forms of massage and energy balancing Saturday 4th December; Candlelighters Christmas Party, 10am-4.30pm, Royal Armouries Drive, Leeds, LS10 1LT: Taster Massage Wednesday 14th December; York, Vangarde Shopping Park 10am - 4pm, Vangarde Way, York, YO32 9AE Where are we going to be in 2017? Throughout 2017 we will be taking the bus out across Yorkshire so families can access support in a place closer to home. Full plans will be available soon however confirmed locations include... Tadcaster, Wetherby, Hull, Beverley, Malton, Skipton, Knaresborough, Keighley, Halifax, Filey, Scarborough, and many more! The launch of the bus The Candlelighters bus will be launched at the first ever Candlelighters Awards, which will be held on Friday 9th September at the Centenary Pavillion, Elland Road. Emmerdale and former Dancing on Ice star, Matt Wolfenden, will be hosting the awards, and will be officially launching the bus outside the venue with the charity’s Patron, Lady Ingilby.

SUBURBAN FOODS
THE
Reader Recipe
Recipe by Bloom Bakers Beetroot Compote
Prep 5 min | Cooking time 40 min
This recipe is based on a compote that my mother used to make and want to share that recipe with you. Method Ingredients 2
Raw beets (medium sized)
2
Bramley apples (medium sizes)
150ml
Water
1.
Dice beets and cut the apples into large wedges and place in a pan together with all the water. Bring to the boil and then let it simmer 25-30min until the beets are soft.
2.
Mix in the cinnamon and honey. If you like a bit of a bite leave it as it is. Otherwise you blend it down and it’s ready to serve!
3tsp Cinnamon 2tbs Honey
Pancake recipe (basic)
Prep 10 min | Baking: 45 min (using two frying pans) | Makes +/- 25 thin pancakes
Method Ingredients
1.
250gr
Self raising flour
250gr
Plain flour
2.
1.2lt
Milk (can also be almond milk)
3.
2
Eggs
1 tsp
Butter/ oil for each pancake 4.
Mix flour with 2/3 of the milk until all the lumps are gone. I usually do this with a whisk, but feel free to use a hand mixer. When you have a smooth mixture you add the two eggs. Mix again until eggs are fully incorporated. Then add the remainder of the milk. The secret to getting a worthy 1st pancake is all in the temperature of the pan. It needs to be piping hot for the first pancake to work. So put the frying pan on the heat without oil (butter) in it and let it become hot. Then add the butter/oil and when that is hot you scoop in your batter. Our batter makes thin pancakes. Slightly thicker than a crêpe. When the batter is no longer runny in the centre and the edges of the pancake start to brown, that is when you flip the pancake. When the other side has browned take the pancake out of the frying pan. And repeat.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
The world turns and season change, so it is time to think and prepare for autumn. Keep on dead heading your perennial plants, to prolong the flowering season for as long as possible. Then look at your annuals, it will soon be time to take them out and replace them with winter bedding. In between, scatter a small amount of fertilizer on to the soil and work it in for a few inches. This will give the winter pansies and wallflowers etc a good start, replacing the food lost during the main growing season. If you are a lover of daffodils and crocus, they are appearing in the shops now, which means you could purchase some different varieties to improve your overall designs. Tulips are left until late October/early November, although specially prepared hyacinths are planted in bowls now for flowering at Christmas. On to the lawn, spike and scarify for the last time, following with an application of autumn lawn fertilizer. This will encourage improved root formation, without making the grass grow any taller. Dandelions and tall weed must be grubbed out with a knife, giving clover and other creeping weeds a last application of specific lawn weed killer. If your hedges are like mine, they will have produced a good amount of new growth. So it is time to give them a decent trim back to maintain their shape, at the same time allowing just enough time for any new shoots to harden off before the first frosts arrive. Thinking of possible cold spells, start to move any frost tender plants indoors or under 16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
cover. This also applies to any house plants, which were moved outside for the summer. Continue to feed your tomatoes, peppers and other green house crops, reaping the harvest from all you lovingly tended fruits and vegetables. Then as the ground is cleared from your outdoor crops, start the winter digging – disposing of all weeds everywhere to stop them seeding. Finally, pot up small quantities of your favourite herbs for the kitchen windowsill. In the depths of winter, the smell will make you smile whenever you touch them.
