A ROBIN IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS As Christmas cards begin to drop through the letterbox, you can be forgiven for thinking that Britain’s favourite bird, the robin, is only with us for the festive season. Of course, readers who love the outdoors will know that this beautiful bird can be found in most habitats throughout the year. What makes it more endearing is its confiding nature and that it can easily be attracted to the smallest garden. It’s this relationship with humans that allows us to observe the robin’s interesting behaviour over the changing seasons. Once the breeding season is over, like all other birds, robins stop singing and, sequentially, moult every feather. They lay low in the dense foliage and feed secretly on insects. Once feathers are renewed, like other birds, robins will relinquish the boundaries they maintained over the spring and summer months. Many will move away, but once they have found a good food source, they will start to defend a territory once more. Having a well-stocked garden might encourage your robin to stay close by but, even if it does move, chances are your regular robin will be replaced by another individual until early spring. It could even be a bird that has come all the way from the continent. Look out for a paler orange breast instead of the vibrant red you are used to seeing. You’ll know whether you have a robin living in your garden as, unlike many other birds, robins sing during the winter months. In fact, they are unique in that both males and females will defend a territory and both will sing. If you see two robins during the autumn and winter, look for posturing behaviour as they defend their territories. Any disputes are usually resolved by posturing but you may also witness birds chasing each other or, in extreme cases, fights can break out. Both males and females will instigate fights and they will fight each other. If the challenger won’t retreat, both sexes will kill other robins. The advantage for us during these winter months is that we get to hear some bird song in an otherwise quiet environment. Most of the singing you will hear in autumn and up to mid-December is from male and female robins. 6 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

You will also hear loud bursts from wrens. As we move from winter to spring, male and female robins will relinquish their separate winter territories. Our continental visitors begin to migrate to their breeding grounds and the birds that moved away from our gardens, if they survived the winter, will return from the south. Male and female robins will then pair up and begin to defend a shared boundary. Once again, you’ll be able to watch posturing behaviour as these boundaries are established and rival birds are chased off. You may also see courtship behaviour as new pairs reinforce their bonds and a nest is built. During this time, the female will stop singing leaving this activity mainly to the male while she lays and incubates eggs. The male will feed the female while she is incubating so, if you see a red-breasted bird quivering like a chick and being fed, this is the adult female. Four to five eggs are laid and chicks are fed by both parents in the nest. Chicks fledge at thirteen to fourteen days. The young speckled birds are fed on the ground by their redbreasted parents. These young will look like adults by early autumn and will be ready to breed themselves by the following spring. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. GETTING ACTIVE, HAVING FUN As we head into the festive season and face the temptation of an extra mince pie or two, it is nice to know we can get great access to leisure centres and sports facilities in the city. It doesn’t have to be a New Year’s resolution, but taking up the Leeds Let's Get Active programme can fight the mince pie monster and be great fun too. Leeds Let’s Get Active supports people to become active through the provision of and access to leisure centre and community sports and activities within a supportive and welcoming environment. The opportunity is available citywide and open to all, and has provided a programme of leisure and community physical activity since 2013 with heading for half a million visits to sessions. Because 45% of these visits have been made by participants who were classified as inactive when they signed up we know that it works. So, you could join the 4,000 people who take part in at least one Leeds Let's Get Active session every week, even if you haven’t been to a leisure centre before. From 1st January 2017, for either just £10 per month membership, you can access selected gym, swim and court sessions, or if you just want to attend every now and again you can pay £2 per swim, gym or court session.

Children need to be active for 60 minutes a day and the 10 Minute Shake Up - www.nhs.uk/10-minuteshake-up/ site is full of good ideas and fun games. Read more at https://www.nhs. uk/10-minute-shake-up/shakeups#w0xlgtgTgbi7pfhi.99 Top tips to get healthy by exercising from http:// www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ childhealth6-15/Pages/ Getactivewithyourkids.aspx Bristol University's professor of exercise and health sciences, Ken Fox, has 10 suggestions that can make exercise fun for all the family. TEN ACTIVITY TIPS FOR FAMILIES
1. Walk or cycle to and from school with the kids as often as possible. 2. Build a den or treehouse with them in the school holidays. Or, under supervision, encourage them to climb a tree or two. 3. Go roller skating, rollerblading or skateboarding, indoors or outside. In winter, go ice skating. Kids also love scooters. 4. Do an activity challenge together, such as working towards a fun run or a walk for charity. Find out about charity walks in your area at www.walkingforhealth 5. Take the dog for a walk. If you don't have one of your own, ask to borrow a neighbour's or friend's dog
and take it for a walk. 6. Support your kids in sports, clubs or any other activities that may interest them. Joining a weekend club sport ensures commitment to a team and regular exercise. 7. Find time every weekend to do something active with your children. Play frisbee or football in the park, go trampolining, or try indoor rock climbing. 8. Fly a kite. The Kite Society of Great Britain can point you to a number of groups that regularly meet for special flying days with experienced members who offer advice and assistance. Some also run kite-making workshops. 9. Try a beach holiday. When they hit the sand, children find a multitude of ways to exercise, including games, swimming, and plenty of running around. Or try an activity-based holiday. 10. The National Parks website has lists of events such as guided walks and children's fun days for fresh ideas for active days out. There’s loads of good ideas and other tips and advice available on the Active Leeds website and you can find out more and view the current timetables of available activities www.leedsletsgetactive.co.uk
