CAMPAIGN TO END PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE Year 12 student, Fizah, has created a thought provoking video to raise awareness of psychological abuse. As part of her online blog, ‘think lifestyle, think me’, Fizah already plays an active role in raising awareness of topics close to her heart with her followers. Setting out on her mission, Fizah approached peers and teachers within school and asked them if they would be willing to support her campaign. After approaching them herself, Fizah is working with a Leeds based domestic violence charity called Behind Closed Doors (BCD) to raise the profile of the video, launched today, as part of the national campaign ‘16 Days of Activism’ which hopes to raise awareness of and help stop domestic violence and abuse. Fizah had this to say on the concept behind the video, “I think psychological abuse is more widespread amongst young people than is currently thought, but I see it a lot and it’s become common place for people to accept their boyfriend or girlfriend having the PIN to their phone or checking their social media accounts. Things might start off as small but can escalate quickly and we need to re-educate young people on what is and is not acceptable so that they can go on to form healthy relationships. Things like Memes are all too readily shared on social media taking the mickey out of being under the thumb for example, but they lead to real issues being downplayed and seen as a source of humour. I hope that my video reaches far and wide and if it helps just one young

person recognise psychological abuse then I’ll be happy.” Behind Closed Doors has invited Fizah (and school representatives) to work with their project team to develop a role as their first Young Person’s Ambassador. They also plan to embed this role in an education-based support model which can be adopted by other secondary schools and higher education providers and hope to secure funding to support this work. Louise Tyne, Director of Behind Closed Doors, said, “When Fizah first approached Behind Closed Doors the team were amazed that she had taken it
upon herself to produce this video and raise awareness of psychological abuse amongst young people. Stuffed Peppers Ingredients: (serves 4) 4 Peppers 300g Rice (I used brown rice) 500g Lamb mince (leave lamb if veggie) Crushed garlic clove ½ an Onion Goats cheese (just a little to sprinkle over the top)

Set oven to 180 Prepare the peppers, cut in half and remove the seeds Arrange on a baking tray so the open side is facing up Boil your chosen rice and set aside while you cook lamb mince with onion and crushed garlic in a pan. When this is all ready mix the lamb with the rice and spoon into the peppers. Cook in the oven for around 25 minutes until the peppers are soft. Remove from the oven and crumble goats cheese on top. To make this vegetarian just leave out the lamb mince.

This is the month when we start to slowly think of the world outside the house, after all the Christmas and New Year festivities are over. One of the best things to start with, are the fences, furniture and sheds. Do they need some running repairs, which we were too busy to do in the summer? It is useful to repaint them every few years, especially before the shrubs and climbers start to cover them with new foliage. Then back into the warmth, to make a sowing and planting plan for all the items you have ordered from the catalogues – together with the plants you intend to purchase as the year develops. This forward planning will ensure you have the correct number of pots, compost and cleared spaces – together with the specific months you have to action them. If you are lucky enough to have a vegetable patch at home, remember all the different
crops should be rotated on a four year cycle to avoid a build up of specific crop pests. The dahlia tubers you stored upside down initially should now be in shallow trays of compost to allow them to sprout as the weather warms up. If you find any have shrivelled, place them in a bucket of tepid water overnight, and return them as plump tubers back into their trays the following morning. With the mild conditions in December, many of us have been reluctant to cut or prune back roses and many other perennial plants. This means a number of them are now sprawling all over the place, and looking very untidy. The cold weather may be coming soon, which means it is time to be ruthless and clear all this old vegetation and newly grown weeds immediately. When all your hard work has been done, relax, smile, and enjoy the scents and colours of your winter flowering shrubs like – sarcococca (Christmas box), mahonia, winter jasmine, witch hazel, viburnum and many more.

LEEDS CITY COUNCIL’S CAR CLUB – ENTERPRISE CAR CLUB I was recently asked by a local resident about the set aside car park spaces for the Enterprise Car Club which are dotted throughout the city. I thought you may be interested to know more about it. The spaces have been created under a Traffic Regulation Order to prevent parking by vehicles that are not part of the Council’s official car club. The cars are not reserved for any particular houses but are part of a city-wide publicly accessible ‘shared mobility’ scheme.

Car Clubs are growing in popularity across the UK and beyond. They are part of the new ‘shared mobility’ offer in cities which also includes car sharing, bike sharing, smart technology and integration with public transport as an alternative to traditional car ownership. The Leeds City Council car club was launched in 2004 with support from a European funded Project in conjunction with West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority (now the Combined Authority). In the three months for which figures are available at the time of writing August to October 2016 the cars
overwhelmed by the demand for bacon or sausage sandwiches, toasted fruit loaf, biscuits, teas and coffees. The attendance was high and a bumper morning was had by most of our traders. Throughout the morning, we served free roast chestnuts with warm mead to all our Customers and seasonal tunes rang out from St John’s Bell Tower followed by performances from Farsley Village Singers and Jessica May Frost. Miss Frost collected funds for Candlelighters Cancer Charity and additional fundraising for Save the Children was carried out at Calverley Candle Cos.
