It would be good to see even more local people getting a mention for their achievements and contributions to our local area, so please keep these coming in. A WOODLAND TOUR Thanks to the development of the new Kirkstall railway station, it’s now possible to take a lovely tour of the woodlands around Bramley, Hawksworth and Newlay. The whole area is reminiscent of a John Atkinson Grimshaw painting with its stone walls and densely tangled undergrowth. My starting point is Bramley Falls Wood on Leeds and Bradford Road. On a fine day in January, some of our resident birds, including great tit, wren and dunnock, will be singing. Heading straight down to the Forge Locks, look and listen for great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper and look for grey wagtail on the canal overflow. Cross the Leeds and Liverpool canal and turn left. Here the River Aire bends sharply towards the canal and the river bend provides a great spot to look for kingfisher, dipper and goosander. The new Kirkstall station approach takes us through a previously inaccessible part of the woodland which provides some low cover for wrens, goldcrest, dunnock and, from the early spring, blackcap and garden warbler. The new Kirkstall Forge development is in its early stages and already has an exciting vibe. By this Autumn it will be a small village with public transport nestled between protected woodland. The development also provides a new view of the River Aire to watch for dipper, kingfisher and otter. Walk up the hill and reach the main A65. Take the new pedestrian crossing to Hawksworth Woods. Take the main lower path through the woodland periodically checking Oil Mill Beck for dipper, grey wagtail and kingfisher. Mistle thrush and song thrush will be singing on warmer winter days and great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper can be seen from these woods. At the end of Butcher Hill, cross Hawksworth Road and take the steep path into Little Hawksworth Wood. Turn sharp left and down the hill taking the path that runs parallel to Hawksworth Road. This wood isn’t as disturbed by dog walkers and woodcock can be found here in winter. As the woodland ends, look for greenfinch and goldfinch on garden feeders on Outwood Lane. Check the open sky for soaring red kite and sparrowhawk. Back at the A65, cross over and turn left onto Rein Road. This densely wooded path takes us back

A Dipper in the River Aire
down to the River Aire then bends down to Newlay. Look for dipper, heron, mallard, goosander and kingfisher on the river. Grey wagtails often show on the goit that runs parallel to the bottom of Rein Road. Walk past the houses and take a left turn onto the iron footbridge that links Newlay Lane and Pollard Lane. Climb the hill on Pollard Lane, pass the Abbey Inn and take the path on the left signposted for the canal walk. Look for bullfinch, robin, dunnock, long-tailed tit, great tit, goldcrest and blue tit and check the open sky again for birds of prey. The hedgerows are good for whitethroat in spring and willow warbler, chiffchaff and garden warbler will be singing from Hunters Green. At the canal, turn left and follow the path to the Lock. Here we cross the canal into Bramley Falls Wood again and follow the old railway track to the left. This is a great place to see jay and treecreeper. At the first signpost to the car park, check the trees around the rocky area for treecreeper and nuthatch before climbing the steps into the parkland. Here you may be able to find stock dove, mistle thrush, redwing and fieldfare. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. WHEN LIZ MET PHIL… When Lurchers Liz and Phil arrived at Dogs Trust Leeds, nobody could have predicted the love affair that would follow. Both dogs had been found separately wandering the streets and given their condition, the team suspect they had been without a home for some time. Although they had had a tough time and were both in need of some TLC, from the moment they set eyes on each other they became the best of friends, just like their royal namesakes. But Liz’s furry-tail ending has come sooner than Phil’s as Liz
Phil with Canine Carer Suzie Douglas
has headed off to her forever home. Now the team are hoping Phil’s special someone will walk through the doors of the Rehoming Centre soon so he can follow in her paw-prints. Amanda Sands, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Leeds, says: “This has never happened before, that two dogs that arrived as strays became best buddies from the moment they met. Phil in particular was in quite a bad condition and really lacked confidence, but as soon
as he met Liz he became a different dog which was lovely! “When we saw they got on so well, we put them together in a kennel so they could keep each other company and then someone came along and offered Liz her forever home which was fantastic, but Phil is still waiting.” Although Phil’s canine companion has headed home, he has continued to come on in leaps and bounds and made lots of new doggie friends, so the team would love to find him a forever home where another dog is already part of the family. Amanda says: “He is a lovely, gentle boy and we’re really hoping that we can find some Lurcher fans out there who fall in love with him so that he too can have the long and happy life he deserves at the heart of a forever home.” If you think you could offer Phil his ideal home, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. 50 DAY CHALLENGE Help mark Heart Research UK’s 50th anniversary this year and join them in taking up a 50 Day Challenge. They are calling for willing members of the public to either Give Up or Take Up something for 50 days. Ideally, Heart Research UK want you to give up something unhealthy, or take up something healthy, for the duration of the challenge. 50 days may seem like a long time, but that's why they are doing
it - after all, it wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy. How about giving up chocolate, alcohol, takeaways or smoking? Or on the other side of the coin, why not take up running, swimming or cycling. Here’s the good news, and why we feel it’s worth celebrating being fabulous at 50: •
In the last 50 years, the annual number of UK deaths from CVD has more than halved
•
•
50 years ago, more than 70% of heart attacks in the UK ended in death. Now at least 70% of people survive In the 1960s, 80% of babies born in the UK with a heart defect did not survive to their first birthday and today around 80% survive into adulthood

We launched our first foodbank in Moortown in 2013 and since then we’ve fed 21,161 people, and collected and distributed 185231kg of food. Over the years, we’ve expanded our foodbanks and now have centres in Woodhouse, Lower Wortley, Bramley, Horsforth, Ireland Wood and Pudsey. So what does the Leeds North and West foodbank do? We provide emergency food packages for the local community through a referral service. When someone is referred to the foodbank, we’ll chat to them about their situation and signpost them to organisations that may be able to help them out. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly
feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope, Adel, Rodley, Calverley and Farsley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good
job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of
effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
Welcome to the mad weather world of 2017, with mild days, hard frosts, rain and snow. It is important to maintain good weed control during these mild days, although be careful of hoeing too deeply, especially if you have lots of spring bulbs not showing above the surface. It is too easy to slice the tops of them, and ruin your colourful display. February is a good month for checking your soil, when it is not frozen, as this will allow you to take any necessary action to improve the structure before the growing season starts. Clay soils need organic matter and grit digging in, while sandy soils need manure, compost of leaf mould. If you want to grow something specific like camellias or rhododendrons etc, soil testing kits are relatively inexpensive and will come with complete instructions if you need to make any changes. It is easy to grow potatoes in bags, pots or in the
18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
ground and they are appearing for sale in all the usual outlets. All potatoes need chitting (sprouting) before planting, and this is the month to stand them up in egg trays, or similar, the sprouting end upwards in a frost-free environment. Fruit bushes and trees will soon be waking up, so if you have finished your winter pruning, now is the time to give them a good feed. They will benefit from a high potash fertiliser, alternatively, fish blood and bone or seaweed meal to get them off to a good start. Water your choice ingredient in around the plant, and provide a mulch if you have any compost available. Seed sowing and planting starts this month, if you have somewhere warm to start everything growing. Shallots and garlic should be planted outside, in the area you want to grow them. Sweet peas, together with hardy annuals and perennials may be started, although they will need hardening off later before being planted out. Enjoy the first snowdrops, crocus and all your other spring bulbs as they start to emerge and flower.

Roll out the dough on a dusted surface and use a cutter to cut into about 6cm circles (I used a glass). 4. Place on greaseproof paper and bake in oven for about 25-30 min and turn half way through.

FIFTY PLUS AND WANTING A CHANGE? YOGA AND MEDITATION JUST FOR YOU I discovered Dru yoga when I was suffering with depression and anxiety. After my first class I floated home! The holistic, nurturing style of Dru Yoga empowered me to live life to the full and inspired me to teach it to others. At fifty-two, I feel the best ever and am passionate about teaching this amazing knowledge others. I have been teaching for 12 years in north Leeds, and have now decided to launch Lakshmi yoga as a specialist in Dru yoga and meditation for those who are fifty and over and young at heart! People can sometimes feel a bit daunted about joining a yoga class, so I wanted to create an environment where you would feel at ease, where you can explore the wisdom and challenges of being fifty and over, with like-minded people. Classes are for all levels, you can work at your own pace
and you will be made extremely welcome. “I wish I had found Dru yoga years ago, Jane is the best yoga teacher I have ever had - JW, retired Look forward to hearing from you! Contact details: jane@northleedsyoga.co.uk / 01943 465230 / www.northleedsyoga.co.uk

LOCAL NEWS LEEDS AFFORDABLE WARMTH STRATEGY Leeds has an Affordable Warmth Partnership which includes a number of organisations, as well as the Council. All these organisations share an interest in promoting affordable warmth and reducing fuel poverty across the city. Helping people to keep warm in their own homes more efficiently contributes to a large number of local and national policies and priorities. The Leeds Affordable Warmth

Strategy has developed a three pronged approach to heating and energy efficiency improvements, encompassing: - city wide projects aimed at improving the whole housing stock to future proof residents against fuel poverty; targeted initiatives in areas with characteristics that make them susceptible to fuel poverty, e.g. low income, hard to treat housing or large concentrations of vulnerable households such as those with long term medical conditions; lastly crisis intervention to identify and assist those vulnerable residents most in need.
The current strategy sets out a vision which states that by 2030 all homes in the city should be of a decent standard and everyone can afford to keep warm.
NATIONAL VEG. SOCIETY Aaron Hickman is speaking at the next meeting on 14th February at 8pm. Aaron can be heard on Radio Leeds gardening programme occasionally and is glasshouse technician at Askham Bryan College York, and he will be talking about unusual vegetables grown by the Victorians. LOCAL NEWS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE SUPPORT ACROSS THE METROPOLITAN DISTRICT OF LEEDS. All women, men and children have the right to live safely, free from fear and harm. Behind Closed Doors (BCD), like many other essential charities, was born out of a desire to help others, more specifically to provide a lifeline to women experiencing domestic violence and abuse where others couldn’t. Established in 1997 by a group of local people in the Otley area, the service has grown from a weekly 2-hour helpline run by Volunteers to a Leeds city-wide service supporting women and men who are - or have in the past - experienced domestic violence and abuse. In addition to providing the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) Outreach Team, BCD also set up a Prevention and Recovery Service (PARS) to support people whose needs are more around preventing escalation of risk or require support to recover after leaving an abusive relationship. The services support people in safe locations (often their own homes or community locations) across the City and spend time understanding everyone’s unique experience and needs and agreeing a personalised support plan. 32 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

In the PARS, many of the Supporters are a wonderful team of Volunteers who undertake the in-house 11 week training and mentoring programme before working directly with victims of abuse. The PARS also designs and delivers bespoke training programmes as well as a range of multiagency training days. The Department for Education was sufficiently impressed by a BCD school-based pilot programme to agree to fund a 12-month project in Leeds to design, trial and share a set of resources and workshops for schools to use to promote Healthy Relationships. The resources were written for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 and are now freely available on a specialist website; www.bcd-orb.org.uk Delivering this educationbased project highlighted how many young people are themselves in abusive relationships but fail to recognise how they are being hurt and manipulated, especially by different forms of psychological abuse. Sadly, the statistics suggest that the problem is escalating. BCD identified some time ago that one of the key actions to reverse this trend is to educate young people themselves and to make this ‘taboo’ subject universally accessible. Furthermore, and recognising the massive influence of their peers, it is important to provide young
people with the knowledge and confidence to challenge abusive behaviours within their own environments and to empower each other to seek the right type of support. Behind Closed Doors are, therefore, delighted to have the chance to support and work with Fizah at Allerton Grange School, promoting her own campaign and on an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively in developing a Young Person’s Ambassador role with far-reaching potential. Behind Closed Doors – www.behind-closed-doors.org.uk Facebook - www.facebook. com/BCDLEEDS/ Twitter - www.twitter. com/BCDLEEDS Article by Jane Thoy (PARS Development Co-ordinator) at Behind Closed Doors Enquiries about the services should be directed to info@ behind-closed-doors.org.uk

‘EVERY DAFFODIL COUNTS’ THIS MARCH Every year in March, Marie Curie, the charity which cares for people living with a terminal illness, hold their annual Great Daffodil Appeal. This year Marie Curie is appealing for support in Leeds. Marie Curie nurses care for people in Leeds in their own homes from 10pm until 7am. They provide hands on care and emotional support as well as allowing loved ones some much needed rest. The charity has also launched a telephone support line and has lots of information about living with a terminal illness available on their website mariecurie.org.uk/help Jen Aspinall, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie in Leeds, is asking people across the city to support the Great Daffodil Appeal in whatever way they can this March; “Marie Curie are appealing for support in Leeds so that we can continue providing services, which are completely free of charge to people living with a terminal illness and their families, when they need it most.” How can you help? • Sign up to volunteer for two hours or more at Great Daffodil Appeal collection. Marie Curie has a huge street collection planned in Leeds City Centre on Friday 31st March and lots 34 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
of others across the city. You can sign up online on our website mariecurie.org. uk/daffodil/daffodil-2017 or contact the fundraising team on 01274 386190. Why not bring your friends, family or colleagues with you and challenge each other to raise the most for Marie Curie? Will your employer allow you time away from work to volunteer as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility policy? Does your employer run a match funding scheme where they match whatever you raise for charity? Or do you know someone who can sing, dance or has a talent to entertain the public at one of Marie Curie’s street collections? If so we would love to hear from you! • Would your organisation have a box of daffodil pin badges on their reception? For a small
donation your colleagues and customers can purchase a daffodil to raise vital funds and awareness of Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal in March. • If you have an idea of your own, or need a little inspiration to raise funds in your own way you can order a fundraising pack full of ideas online at mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil/ fundraising. Your local Community fundraiser will be more than happy to support you, provide materials and advice to make whatever you plan a huge success. For more information please contact Jen Aspinall, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser on 01274 386190 or email Jennifer. aspinall@mariecurie.org.uk. However you decide to support the Great Daffodil Appeal we thank you.
