WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS It has been lovely over the past week to have seen ducklings and swans nesting at Yeadon Dam. Very nice to see and I am sure that many other areas will have the same. Any photos would be great to see (hopefully we will be able to print a few in our next edition). We are pleased to have quite a few local community events and carnivals in this month’s edition and hopefully they are all well supported and enjoyed by many (once again photos are always appreciated). If you have any submissions for consideration for our June edition, please email details to editorial@suburbanleeds.co.uk or call Rachel on 0113 819 8141. Many thanks to our valued advertisers and contributors. We will now be working on edition 28 which will deadline on 26/05/17. Thank you Rachel Morgan, Editor

OUR SWIFTS NEED YOUR HELP The first week of May is the traditional arrival time for swifts at their nest sites in Leeds. It’s an exciting and uplifting time for swift lovers, especially if they know they have swifts nesting at their house. The first sign that swifts have returned to breed is the sound of their wonderful piercing scream which they make to acknowledge an established colony. Each returning bird circles the nest site before flying into the exact hole it used last year. As more birds arrive and return to their nests, our skies are alive with tumbling, black, scythe-like shapes. Screams of joy fill the air and summer is finally here. I hope I’ve painted a picture that some of you are still experiencing but I’m guessing this is just a distant memory for most of the readers of this magazine. Sadly, swifts have suffered a drastic decline and this is entirely the fault of humans. We’ve blocked up the holes in our roofs, we’ve fitted PVC soffits and boards and installed cavity wall insulation. We’ve hermetically sealed ourselves into our homes without a thought to the homes of other living creatures that share our space. To make things worse, our councils have destroyed entire colonies with their regeneration schemes and very little consideration has been made for swifts when planning new housing initiatives. Mostly this has been done out of ignorance and in some cases by turning a blind eye, but thankfully the situation is reversible. You’ll be pleased to hear that we can fill our skies with swifts once more with a little investment, a lot of patience and by raising our awareness about these fabulous creatures. A couple of years ago I set up Leeds Swifts which is now part of a nationwide network of swift groups. We meet regularly and also link to swift experts and enthusiasts around the world. Together we are aiming to ‘keep our skies alive’ by educating people about swifts and encouraging as many people as possible to provide new homes for these wonderful birds. Here’s how you can help: 1.
Firstly, you need to be able to identify swifts correctly. Swifts appear completely black. They have ridiculously long wings, make a piercing screaming sound and they do not perch. They don’t build visible nests, instead they disappear

young swift in box
into cracks and crevices. They are often confused with swallows or house martins which build a visible nest out of mud, inside barns or attached to buildings. Swallows and martins show lots of white on the underside of their bodies. House martins also have a white rump. 2.
Swifts can be very secretive around the nest site and often people have no idea that they have swifts nesting at their house. Listen out for swifts screaming near to your house and contact Leeds Swifts if you see any screaming parties or you see swifts looking like they are trying to get under a roof.
3.
Contact Leeds Swifts (on Facebook, Twitter or www.startbirding.co.uk/leeds-swifts/) if you’d like to attract swifts to nest at your house. This involves putting up some swift nest boxes and playing swift ‘love songs’ at the right time of the year to attract newly maturing birds to prospect for next year’s breeding sites. We can provide all the advice and information you need to get you started or check out Swift Conservation www.swift-conservation.org or Action for Swifts http://actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk/
4.
Visit Leeds Swifts at this year’s Leeds Birdfair on Saturday 24th June at Rodley Nature Reserve to learn more about these wonderful birds and how you can help to change the future for swifts.
Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. For details of classes email linda@startbirding.co.uk or call 07778 768719. Visit www.startbirding.co.uk or Start Birding on Facebook and Twitter (for Leeds Swifts visit Facebook/LeedsSwifts or Twitter@LeedsSwifts)

DEDICATED DUO FIND FOREVER HOME Can you help a Trailhound be homeward bound? Dogs Trust Leeds is hoping to sniff out a forever home for a ten-year-old Trailhound. Toby arrived at the York Road rehoming centre in January having been retired from hound trail racing, but he’s definitely not ready to rest his paws just yet! Despite being an older gentleman he still has lots of energy and loves nothing more than getting out and about for a good, long walk – he can go for miles! He is also proof that you can teach an older dog new tricks as he loves his food and will do whatever is asked for a tasty treat!
Conservatory Leaks fixed
Toby loves his human pals, including Canine Carer at Dogs Trust Leeds Suzie Douglass.
He loves being around his two-legged friends and he has lived with a cat before so may well be able to live with a feline friend. He might take a little time to adjust to living in a home but he can live with a placid canine companion who could show him the ropes and help him find his paws. He is used to having lots of company so at first he would benefit from having owners who are around most of the time so he isn’t home alone. He can live with older children and would be a lovely addition to any family. If you think you could offer Toby his ideal home, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly
feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope, Adel, Rodley, Calverley and Farsley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good
job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of
effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A SUMMER BREEZE BLOWS INTO BRAMHOPE Events for all the family at this year’s Summer Festival. This summer, Bramhope is packed with events and all the organisers have agreed that bringing them together under the Summer Festival banner will provide something for all ages and tastes. The Parish Council particularly wants to respond to requests for family friendly events and has included a family picnic and games at the Recreation Ground from 12 noon on the 25 June and a mini Breeze event at West Park Rugby Club on 3 June, providing rides, entertainment and fun for all ages of children. It wouldn’t be a Summer Festival without the ever popular Cabaret evening, this year featuring Jenny Smith who joins guitarist Derrick Harris as part of his quartet at Bramhope Village Hall on 17 June at 7.30 pm. Normally a sell-out, it is wise to book early. The two churches, Bramhope Village Hall and Bramhope WI are all putting on events as part of the Festival. On Saturday 13 May St Giles Church is hosting “Encore” at 7.30 pm, a singing and dancing group, followed by an afternoon with the Salvation Army on 10 June and a wine 14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

and cheese evening on 1 July. Bramhope Methodist Church is having a film evening and has chosen the very popular “La La Land” to be shown on Tuesday 6 June at 7.00 pm. This is bound to be popular so book early to avoid disappointment. They have also kindly organised an afternoon tea with entertainment by “Serendipity” on 27 May at 2.30 pm. This looks to be great fun as they present a costumed programme of wartime memories, featuring music that kept the spirit of Britain alive during the World War 2. Bramhope Village Hall is staging a play by The Jay Walkers at 7.30 pm on 20 May, followed by a murder mystery with the Adel Players at 7.30 pm on 26 May, which includes a pie and pea supper and bar. Bramhope WI is to hold an afternoon tea at the Village Hall at 3pm on 24 June. This is a splendid occasion where delicious delicacies can be sampled in a beautiful setting. Councillor Diane Fox will once again be leading two History Walks around Bramhope. These have been extremely popular in the past and Diane is covering different aspects of the history of Bramhope, with particular focus on Bramhope in the 1901 census. The walks start at the Puritan Chapel, the first at 6.30 pm on
30 May and the walk is then repeated on Sunday 11 June at 2 pm. Both are free events. Last but not least, Bramhope Royal British Legion will be hosting the ever popular Brass Band Concert at West Park Rugby Club on 29 July from 7.30 pm. It is remarkable that so much effort is made throughout the village to put on entertainment for the residents so please show your support by coming along and making the most of the summer in Bramhope. For information about where to obtain tickets for the various events please contact Diane Fox via email at foxatwestbreary@gmail. com or on 0113 267 4360.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
May is a wonderful month, with lambs gambolling in the fields, and many shrubs and trees showing leaves and blossom. There are also many spring flowering plants still in bloom, making everyone feel happy and excited. Your dahlia tubers will have sprouted well, so try taking a few cuttings to increase the stock of your favourite plants. Separate the new growth from just outside the tuber, then insert them into a good pot of compost and keep them warm and moist until rooted. You could also try taking cuttings of chrysanthemums, separating new shoots with a small amount of roots from the parent plant and placing them in a new pot. As the weather warms up towards the end of May, start to plant out all your frost tender plants, such as dahlias, geraniums, bedding plants – and everything you started from seed earlier in the year. UNLESS, a further frost is forecast, in which case you may need some horticultural fleece to protect them. In the vegetable garden, it is time to continue planting all your brassicas plants, i.e. cauliflowers, cabbage, kale etc. Then additional sowings of peas, beans, swedes, carrots, together with everything else you particularly enjoy – pumpkins, sweet corn and other exotics. If you do not have any space for vegetables, remember they also grow well in florists buckets (available from most super markets) with holes drilled in them at the bottom for drainage. The taste of home grown tomatoes in heavenly, and with so many different varieties available you must try one or two of as many kinds as you have room for. This also applies to the small cucumbers, which are ideal for just one or two meals. Then thinking about plants growing up canes, all your sweet peas will be heading upwards at a good rate, which means regular tying in and dead 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
heading to keep them flowering all summer. In this warmer weather, all the individual garden pests will multiply at an astonishing rate, so spray regularly each month with a propriety insecticide/fungicide or more often with a soft soap solution. Then look out for slugs and snails which love to eat the soft emerging foliage of hostas, delphiniums and lupins to name a few, and take appropriate action.

MY RELATIVE NEEDS TO MOVE TO A CARE HOME… As a carer for a close relative or parent, there may come a time when you find yourself contemplating where you can get more care and support for your loved one in later life. The common misconception is that the only option available is a traditional ‘care home’. Whilst this may be appropriate for some people Westward Care, a local provider of care and support for older people, have been leading the way in developing wider options that can make the transition to a more supported way of living, less of a dramatic lifestyle change. With an established track record of providing high quality residential and nursing care across three sites in Leeds (Southlands in Roundhay, Headingley Hall and Pennington Court in Beeston) Westward Care have been developing their Independent Apartments offer over the last five years. This innovation is not a retirement home. It is an option where people can continue to own their own home and decide on their own itinerary, with the reassurance of care and support if or when it is needed. People can tailor their own package of support depending on what they need – from laundry service to dining provision or help with personal care. Families that have chosen Westward Care locations for their loved ones highlight that when their relative moved to their apartment, it took a weight off their shoulders. The relationship
with their relative changed from being one of ‘checking up’ to catching up – enjoying their time together rather than dealing with a checklist of actions. Whatever the solution Westward Care believe in empowering people in later life to enjoy a new lease of life. Westward Care are inviting readers to visit any of their locations on 16 June from 2pm - 5pm for their Spring Open Day. Enjoy afternoon tea and variety of activities – all for free. Pop it in your diary. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 23

EXCEPTIONAL RESULT FOR ROTARY EGG HUNT Aireborough Rotary’s fourth Easter Egg Hunt at Rodley Nature Reserve proved an all-round winner despite the disappointing weather. More than 300 children completed the course by collecting the six tokens and selecting their well deserved prize at the end. As a result of donations and a well-stocked tombola boasting 135 Easter Eggs, more than £1100 was raised for Rotary charities, including the Martin House Hospice. For many attending, this was also an opportunity to tour the Reserve and see the massive amount of work carried out by volunteers to repair the flood damage of Christmas 2015, partially helped by a Rotary grant. Much interest was also shown in seeing the contents of an Aquabox, which provides highly effective water and humanitarian aid around the world following disasters. Aireborough Rotary is proud to supply more than 20 of these life-saving boxes every year.
(Otley) and Thorntons (LS1) for donating eggs and Palmer’s, for their plants which all contributed hugely to the day’s success.
The Rotary Club is grateful to Marks and Spencer (Pudsey and Briggate), Morrisons (Guiseley, Horsforth and Yeadon) Sainsbury’s
But the greatest thanks must go to the loyal and resolute public, who braved the inclement weather in large numbers to support this charitable event.
