With advice straight from the offender’s mouths, there are a number of simple, practical suggestions to help you take steps to make your homes less appealing to burglars.
tend to leave more doors and windows insecure and we see an increase in ‘opportunistic’ offenders easily getting into people’s homes. Using a ‘sash Insp. Dan WOOD jammer’ (a flipdown lock which stops a door being opened) is a really simple measure people can take when they are in their houses.
Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Dan Wood said, “Burglaries in the area have reduced in recent months, but I’d urge people not to be complacent. As we move towards the summer, people still need to take steps to maintain the security of their properties. “As the weather warms up, people
“Unfortunately we’ve seen some cases of sheltered accommodation also being targeted. If you have friends or relatives living in such accommodation, please make sure their security is up to scratch and encourage them to be vigilant, not allowing anyone they don’t know into their homes.
ADVICE FROM THE OFFENDER’S MOUTH... West Yorkshire Police has been working with convicted burglars to bring down the number of burglaries in the area this summer.
“Offering to keep an eye on your neighbour’s home when they are on holiday by opening and closing blinds or curtains, and removing mail from the letterbox are also simple things that prevent a burglar from identifying if a property is unoccupied. “We are committed to reducing house burglaries and every day we revisit all such crimes and ‘super-cocoon’ addresses all around the victim. The aim of this is to find new lines of enquiry and make the neighbouring properties more security conscious. We also routinely check second-hands outlets (both shops and on-line versions) to try to track property from burglaries being sold on. Although past employee Christina Cockburn (pictured) has since returned to her core profession as a probation officer, she still works there in a voluntary capacity. Turning her talents to fundraising, she organised the dance-a-thon at Horsforth St Margaret’s Church Hall on 18 April. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Menston, Guiseley, Yeadon, Rawdon, Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope and Adel areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes
to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

RAWDON – A SUBURBAN VILLAGE Article by Sam Wilkinson
Rawdon is a delightful village on the outskirts of Leeds that derives from the Old English term ‘Rawden’ or a dweller in the rough valley’ It has developed into a beautiful village with an excellent array of shops and local businesses to suit people of all ages. It also has some local landmarks such as the Rawdon Billing, which can be seen from a considerable distance and is often used for walks and hikes in the summer months and a great place to take the kids sledging in the winter months. It is also home to St Peter’s Church, which was built by Francis Layton as a chapel of ease for the parish of Guiseley in 1645. Due to the troubled times with the English Civil War it took many years to erect the church. Francis Layton died in 1661, leaving his son Henry to continue with the building. It was finally consecrated in 1684. A tower was added in 1707 and architect Alexander Crawford at a cost of £1,200 largely rebuilt the church in 1864.

With two primary schools and a secondary school, it is an ideal place for families to locate to with plenty of things in the surrounding area to get involved in. The main road joins up both Leeds and Bradford and is well placed for public transport and travel to the cities, as well as just being 1-mile drive to Leeds Bradford Airport for any holidays in the sun. Micklefield Park is a great place for kids with a large play area, tennis courts and a skate park set well away from the roads for safety. The community library is also right next to the park and is run entirely by volunteers. The 3rd Rawdon Village show on the 18th July, is being held at the Library in association with Rawdon Littlemoor PTA and will include competition classes, stalls and much more.

There are plenty of shops around too. will prove vital when selling their home. Rawdon is a great place with a friendly atmosphere. It’s certainly worth a visit with plenty to do locally and great scenery. With local business thriving the development of the village is going from strength to strength.

OLLY THE OWL PART III
In the late 1950s, Guiseley schoolboy Brian Firth rescued an injured tawny owl chick and nursed it back to health and, in a year, young adulthood. Things were now on an even keel – until a neighbour reported young Brian to the authorities for keeping a wild bird. Brian, now retired, related the story to Suburban. This is the third and concluding part. It was three agonising weeks before they arrived. The policeman looked distinctly uncomfortable, so I guessed it wasn’t all going to be good news. The RSPCA inspector pulled out reams of paperwork. He was a really grumpy old fogey – must have been at least thirty ... Surprisingly quietly spoken, he asked me how I’d found Olly. Had I ever stolen birds’ eggs or been in trouble for interfering with wildlife? When Dad protested he 14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

explained that they were routine questions. We had done our best to keep Olly comfortable, following a vet’s advice. I refuted the allegation that I had been keeping Olly against his will – he had been free to come and go as he pleased during our field trips. Not only was the inspector satisfied that no laws had been broken, he was impressed that Olly had been catching mice during our field trips – evidence that Olly was comfortable and indeed free to make his own way in the wild if he wanted. He was also pleased to see that Olly resisted physical inspection, retaining the natural caution that wild birds needed to have. Now for the bombshell. “I am satisfied that he has
been well looked after and is more than capable of surviving in the wild. My recommendation is that you release him in fields away from this area and leave him to his own devices.” Olly had been with us for a year. Any thoughts of releasing him into the wild, maybe even forcing him, had long disappeared. We should have questioned his ruling. Olly was in good health and we weren’t breaking any laws. But, back in those days, most people just did what they were told. We agreed to release him the following weekend. What a hard week that was. We had decided on Cragg Wood at Rawdon and pulled up alongside a field bordered with trees and shrubbery. Mum and Dad waited at the fence while I

walked into the field. The first time he landed in a tree but came straight back. The second time he flew out of sight. Mum and I cried all the way home. I cried well into the night. Monday morning and I was still upset. Could Olly really fend for himself? Mum and Dad agreed to take me back that evening. I walked into the field with my sister, Eileen. There he was, perched pretty much where I had last seen him. He must have heard me calling my parents and was soon back on my arm. This time I wasn’t going to take no for an answer – nor was Olly, by the look of things. He came home. Dad informed Guiseley Police the next day and we heard no more.
offering the explanation that I had no right to keep a wild bird. Apparently they did. Then Jim Slater, a local lad a little older and a lot larger than us, came over. He pushed the three away, threatening to punch them if they persisted. I didn’t see much of Jim for a while after that, though we were to become good friends in our late teens. My family dodged the genuine interest shown from time to time by the school and local press. We thought it better to remain under the RSPCA’s radar, just in case. Looking back, Olly could have been quite a celebrity. But then I wouldn’t be telling you his story now ...
There were only a few minor incidents after that. Olly’s curious bond with Kell (our Labrador cross) was put to the test when Olly landed on Kell’s back instead of my arm. Kell bolted but they quickly reconciled. Olly didn’t go anywhere near other dogs – though I expect would have defended Kell had any turned.
Olly had spent nearly all of his three-and-a-half years with us when the Olly era came to an inexplicably abrupt end. We’d been in the field for twenty minutes. One of Olly’s return flights ended half way through. He fluttered to the ground, sitting quiet and just staring up at me. I sensed something was wrong. I put him in his box and went home.
Then there was the time three lads approached me in the field. They watched us for twenty minutes and then demanded I hand him over. They were going to take him home with them, curiously
While my parents got ready for a trip to the vet, I sat on the lounge floor stroking Olly and speaking to him. He suddenly reared up, flapping his wings to prevent falling backwards.
Then he just went limp and fell forward into my hands. That was it. Olly was dead – likely heart failure, according to the vet some time later. My parents came in to find me holding him, tears streaming down my face. We decided to bury Olly on my uncle’s allotment on Coach Road. I called in at my auntie’s on the way to see if my cousin, Alan Broadwell, would go with me. We walked the long way, along Ghyll Royd where I had found Olly almost four years earlier. Before committing him to the ground, I opened the shoe box and took him out for a final look. I thought nothing at the time about having to bend his neck to get him back into the box. But I did several hours later. I was unable to get to sleep through the thought of Olly resting there for eternity with his neck bent by me squeezing him back into his makeshift coffin. Early the next morning we exhumed his remains, straightened his neck and reburied him in a larger box. Our beloved Kell went on to live until he was eighteen. But I shed more sweat and tears over Olly’s three and a half years than I ever did during Kell’s eighteen. Olly – long gone but never forgotten. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 15

STUART ANDREW During the last five years I have spent as MP for Pudsey, Horsforth and Aireborough, it has become very apparent to me that we have a wealth of groups and organisations in our area that are doing all they can to support local businesses and our community. More than just encouraging people to shop, these organisations are heavily involved in the communities they represent and do a great deal for them, such as arranging community events. From Business Support Groups in Pudsey and Farsley to the In Bloom groups in Guiseley, Calverley, Horsforth and Pudsey, as well as community groups such as Rawdon Library and the Live at Home schemes, there are a wide variety of things for local people and businesses to get involved with and it is important that they take advantage of these.
revitalising the UK’s economy and community groups and organisations like those I have mentioned above should be commended for the important role they play in supporting our local businesses as they grow and thrive.
My time as the local MP has shown me just how vital small businesses like those throughout our constituency are in terms of

LOOK WHO’S ARRIVED IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS Spring migration is in full swing so you may have noticed some different sounds coming from your garden, local parks and woodlands. Some of these birds have come all the way from southern Spain while others have travelled from as far as sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Let’s have a look at three of the most common spring visitors that can be found right now in your area of Leeds. One of the first migrants to reach the suburbs of Leeds is the chiffchaff, a little warbler that likes to sing from tall trees. It sings its name ‘chiffchaff’, ‘chiff-chaff’ with a thin, stuttering, metallic sound that often drifts away on the breeze. These birds arrive from the beginning of March and are closely followed by their close cousin, the willow warbler. Both birds look similar but sound very different. The
Willow Warbler
willow warbler prefers lower growing trees in more open habitat. Their song is also thin but it is sweet, starts off high and gradually descends down the scale, like a waterfall.
See if you can find a chiffchaff, willow warbler and a blackcap in your neck of the woods. If you need some help then record it on your phone and get in touch.
Arriving about the same time is the blackcap. This is a different type of warbler which likes dense shrubs. They are larger than the chiffchaff and willow warbler. The male is grey with a black cap and the female has a ginger cap. Male blackcaps have a fast, fluty song which I think sounds like a blackbird played at high speed.

LOCAL NEWS A NEW TYPE OF LEAVE ARRANGEMENT Shared Parental Leave is a new legal entitlement for eligible parents of babies due, or children placed for adoption, on or after 5 April 2015. Parents will remain entitled to take maternity, paternity and adoption leave. However the difference with shared parental leave is it provides eligible parents with the opportunity to be more flexible when considering care arrangements for their child during the child’s first year. The amount of leave available is calculated using the mother’s entitlement to maternity/ adoption leave, which allows them to take up to 52 weeks leave. However the mother must take at least 2 weeks maternity leave following the birth of a child (if she works in factory then she must take 4 weeks). If the mother reduces their maternity/adoption leave entitlement or their maternity allowance

or maternity pay then they and/or their partner may opt-in to the Shared Parental Leave system. Unlike maternity/adoption leave, eligible employees can stop and start their Shared Parental Leave and return to work between periods of leave. To apply for shared parental leave you must ensure you are eligible and you must give notice to your employer in writing. Employers and employees will find that having early conversations regarding leave intentions will be beneficial, enabling them both to be clear about what leave arrangements are being considered and how this can be accommodated. If would like any more information on Shared Parental Leave please contact either Caroline or Marie on 0113 357 1315 or email enquiries@consilialegal.co.uk

BUY YORKSHIRE 2015 Suburban visited the 2015 Buy Yorkshire event at Leeds Royal Armouries on 29 April (the second day of two). With some sectors, visitors were spoilt for choice. For example, there was no shortage of charities, education and training providers, energy and telecoms services and suppliers of promotional and advertising material. But the only terrestrial broadcaster there was Made in Leeds TV who, on the day, seemed busiest of all. Dean Rayson (Senior Accounts Manager) told Suburban; “It’s been crazy. I haven’t even had a chance to look round the other exhibitors. We’ve been three deep at times. Some of the contacts we made
yesterday returned today to confirm their interest and make doubly sure that we’d be getting in touch. How many of those contacts will generate programmes or revenue remains to be
seen, but we have found the event very encouraging.”

Suburban also made a few contacts and will be featuring their stories in forthcoming issues.

TOUR DE YORKSHIRE– LE SPORTIVE With Suburban being monthly, we asked photographer Ivor Hughes to look for a different angle on this year’s inaugural event... The Welcome to Yorkshire team would have had good reason to be apprehensive about the new three-race three day cycling event, conceived by them in the wake of last year’s Tour de France and its phenomenal success throughout the county. Managed by ASO, the French sporting events management company also responsible for le Tour, it was very much an unknown quantity. Early retiree Richard Harley with local couple Kim Williamson and Jonathan Halliwell, there supporting a friend taking part. Richard’s story is included in our report.
Most participants stayed in groups, sharing the workload and increasing road safety
Not only were there no close bases for comparison, the international cycling calendar is so busy that it clashed with two major events elsewhere. First there was the climax of the eight-day and eight stage Presidential Tour of Turkey, in which Britain’s Mark Cavendish was competing (he won the sprint title). Then there was the Frankfurt Grand Prix – cancelled at short notice due to a terrorist threat but to which many professionals were already committed. And it preceded le Tour’s Italian equivalent, Giro d’Italia, by less than a week. Well, the Tour de Yorkshire has been and gone and was hailed as a resounding success, though to say they needn’t have worried would be to invite complacency. Nonetheless, Yorkshire’s Tour had much to offer that le Tour did not. Over three stages rather than two, it was able to include more of the

county, particularly the coastal stretches in Stage 1. Stages 2 and 3 were far less disruptive than last year’s Stage 2, which had cut the north of England in half for almost the entire Sunday. The new routes were carefully chosen openended horseshoes that shut some of the roads for as little as ninety minutes. Which, in turn, made more of the route accessible for the 1,500,000 spectators and didn’t keep them penned in for half a day. Finally, the Tour de Yorkshire more than matched the club cyclist element of the French event. Whereas l’étape is a fixed full stage of the Tour de France open to the pre-booked public on a professional rest day, invariably in the middle of nowhere and nowhere near any action, the Yorkshire event offered a choice of three distances on day three itself. Starting and finishing in Leeds’ Roundhay Park, they were also

You see, I’d been a part-time professional cyclist in the sixties and seventies. None of the major tours, but around northern Europe competing as a domestique (jobbing pro) in criteriums (town centre evening races). The prize money was a welcome addition to my salary as an engineer. For some years I was with Raleigh Cycles, as luck would have it. “I didn’t feel as if I had anything to prove, didn’t want to get wet or chilled to the bone and told him that I’d accompany him for the first few miles before retiring. In any event, my so-called state-of-the art carbon fibre bike is fitted with cork brake pads which don’t have the necessary bite in the wet, not for the steep descents later on the course.
In safe and experienced hands. Pictured at last year’s Tour de France, Gary Verity remains Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire. Bernard Hinault, fivetimes winner, was ASO’s advisor and ambassador at the time and assumed a similar role for Tour de Yorkshire. Come in Number 12. Thomas Denwood of Harrogate Nova was the first to arrive in Pool in Wharfedale. His overall time of 5:14:39 was also the fastest for the whole event.
equipment weren’t cut out for the additional challenges. One retiree, at Pool in Wharfedale, ticked all three boxes.
“My surgeon? Oh yes. Adam operated successfully on my bowel cancer. It had at one time been regarded as inoperable, due to other complications. But, you see, he also serves part-time as a colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps. I’m certain that his battlefield-honed surgical skills enabled him to succeed where others might not. Pro cyclist in the sixties? Yes, I’m seventy years of age.”
Richard Harley from Nottingham; “Hi – you’re the first supporters I’ve seen this morning, out on the route proper that is. My surgeon, Adam Brooks (of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust), asked me weeks ago if I’d join him on this event.
Wow. I’d already been feeling exploitative, photographing all those rain-sodden cyclists just before the sharp climb up Pool Bank and with another seventy miles to go after that. Though I didn’t feel quite as bad after dropping off young Richard back at Roundhay Park.
more convenient and didn’t get in the way of the start of Stage 3 proper – in Wakefield. At 140 km, the longest of the three routes passed through Pool in Wharfedale, Otley, Denholme, Hebden Bridge, Haworth and Ilkley. Thousands of participants left at staggered intervals starting at 6.30 and never found themselves that far from civilisation. By 6.30, and well beyond, the rain had become so heavy that it caused some entrants to withdraw or retire. Some for reasons of comfort, others deciding that either they or their

Horsforth Hustings on 19 April. The mainstream party candidates for the Pudsey constituency were in far better humour than their leaders had been on similar national televised events, though were no less passionate when engaged on important issues.
IT’S ALL OVER NOW Although Suburban’s 48,000 copies went to press while a similar number of Pudsey constituents’ votes were being cast and counted (49,000 in 2010), the results of Horsforth Churches Together’s Hustings event on 19 April, though academic, remain interesting. HCT is a charitable community initiative. Perhaps its best known public presence is as organiser of Horsforth Farmers’ Market, monthly on Town Street and held on first Saturdays (except January). On Sunday 19 April they adopted the BBC initiative by inviting the five mainstream local candidates for the post of MP

for Pudsey (including Horsforth) to St Margaret’s Church Hall. They were invited to address and answer questions from the general public. Hardly surprisingly, the messages and Q and A session differed little from what had already been seen on television. Though one pleasant surprise was the good manners, and good humour, in which the afternoon was conducted by all. The political balance shown by the audience’s entry and exit polls was even more surprising. Whereas Stuart Andrew (Conservative) was returned in 2010 with a narrow majority, the audience of around 200 voted strongly in favour of Labour’s repeat candidate
Jamie Hanley both on entry (49%) and exit (64%). Stuart Andrew came a distant second (12% and 17%), with third and fourth places shifting between Rik Downes (LibDem) (11% and 6%) and Claire Allen (Green) (both 8%). Roger Tattersall (UKIP) remained in fifth and last place (1% and 3%), with the overall increases in percentages being a result of the reduction of undecided voters (down from 19% to 3%). “Best Performance” on the day went to Jamie Hanley, with Claire Allen coming a creditable second. The shares of the day’s votes were of course unlikely to be replicated either in Pudsey or anywhere else on 7 May. But HCT is to be congratulated for allowing lesser known candidates to show their personalities to the general public, and by bringing constituents’ key concerns to their attention. It would be good to have similar events online here and elsewhere in 2020.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
May is a maddening month for most gardeners, as we want to enjoy the sunshine and start playing in the garden. Unfortunately, cool nights and late frosts can destroy all our good work if we plant and sow too early. Your maxim then is to plant and sow, when all danger of frost has passed. In the mean time, keep mowing and edging the lawn – removing moss and weeds as necessary. Then spray your roses with a combined fungicide and insecticide, to keep away any signs of blackspot and green fly. Prevention is better than cure. Perennial plants are growing strongly, so start staking the taller varieties like delphiniums, dahlias etc – to stop them being blown over and broken in strong winds. Dahlias and chrysanthemums should be planted out after the last frost. Hardy bedding plants can be planted out at the end of this month, providing they have been hardened off. Half hardy items are better kept under cover until the weather is warmer. As your spring flowering bulbs go over, take all the dead heads off and give the plants a dose of fertiliser to bulk up the bulbs for next year. If the clumps are congested, or have flowered poorly, split them up and replant

at a good depth. Forsythia, ribes and other spring flowering shrubs may be pruned after flowering to keep them to a reasonable size. In the vegetable garden, or growing in pots, potatoes which have been chitted can be planted now. Seeds can be sown of parsnips, carrots, Swedes, beetroot and all the brassicas family. Leave the runner and French beans towards the end of the month, together with all your salad crops. If your herb bed is looking forlorn, dig up the plants and split them before replanting to reinvigorate. Finally, the slugs are out and active, so use your favourite remedy to save your garden.

COUNCILLOR PAUL WADSWORTH At the end of a municipal year in which I was privileged to serve as Chair of the Outer North West Community Committee, I wanted to say a few words about the very worthwhile work carried out over the last 12 months. The committee covers Adel & Wharfedale, Guiseley & Rawdon, Horsforth, and Otley & Yeadon. As well as looking at issues across the full range of council services, we identified three themes that we wanted to pay particular attention to in workshop engagement sessions: domestic violence, social
isolation, and engagement with young people. All of the sessions helped to raise awareness and understanding of the impact that these issues have across our area. The latter saw members of the committee take part in an extremely successful event at Trinity University with young people aged 8-17. There was a question and answer session, as well as an activity where councillors and young people discussed how the Youth Activity Fund money should be spent in the wards. This was genuine engagement and I think it was a really positive experience for everyone involved. Using our wellbeing budget,

the community committee has also approved funding for 28 well-being projects totalling £168,245. In addition, £56,470 has been spent on 20 projects from the Youth Activity Fund. These projects will benefit local community groups across the four wards that the committee covers. The Community Committee gives us a chance to really engage with the communities we represent and involve people in decisions that affect them. I think we’ve made real progress this year and I look forward to this work continuing. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley & Rawdon Ward
