CONNECT WITH US @SubMagLeeds facebook.com/Suburbanmagazine1

Our thanks this month to all who have supported Suburban Magazine to date. We are grateful for both the advertisers who have placed their business with us, many now in their fourth month with Suburban and to the contributors who take the time to submit articles sharing their knowledge and experiences for us to enjoy. We are really keen to keep our content as local as possible and would like to encourage people to share any stories or snippets of local information with us (we will try to include as many

submissions as possible). Following on from Olly the Owl in our first three editions we have a story from another local resident in this edition on his many finds whilst metal detecting. I would particularly like to ask anyone who may be happy to share some lovely old tales with our readers for the next edition. We look forward to working on edition 5 - which deadlines 26/6/15 and if would like to submit any articles for consideration, these can be forwarded to editorial@ suburbanleeds.co.uk or you can call Rachel on 0113 819 8141.

CARS: KEEPING YOURS SAFE! Local police have recently seen an increase in car crime, particularly in car parks around local beauty spots at secluded locations like Golden Acre Park and Otley Chevin. In most cases people are parking up to go for a walk and foolishly hiding their bags containing valuables in the boot or under the seat. You should never do this, you don’t know who is watching you and it only takes seconds to break in once you have walked away. Although people can be reassured that the culprit has been identified and is now in gaol, you should never leave anything of value in a vehicle. Officers have been out raising awareness around car crime protection and often patrolling PCSO’s see valuable items on display in cars and vans. These include sat navs, lap tops, expensive coats, money, mp3 players and

a number of bags. All easy pickings for a thief! Please follow these simple steps which may prevent you from becoming a victim: •

When you leave your vehicle please make sure there is no sat-nav or cradle left on display. If you have used a cradle with a suction cup wipe the mark off the windscreen (a telltale sign to a thief!). Don’t leave property on show or hide it in obvious places like under the seats or glove box. Take it with you. If you leave any telltale signs there might be something of value

in your vehicle these are the first places thieves will look. Don’t leave coats or bags on display. Thieves may think they have purses or wallets inside and break in to check. Walk around your vehicle and look in can you see anything on display? This takes seconds and could save you hours in arranging repairs or replacements for property.

Get into a routine each time you leave your vehicle and make the checks. Don’t give thieves an easy ride! Insp Richard Coldwell Leeds District

SUMMER WHITE WINES, TRY SOMETHING NEW TODAY:

you should give a go this summer whilst relaxing in our great British sunshine.

Summer night’s are with us once again and so begins the dusting off of summer clothes, the furious holiday booking off work and long relaxing evenings alone or with friends.

Finca de Arantei Albariño (Spain):

Whilst you are enjoying the hopeful hot days of summer this year, give some thought to that accompaniment you may wish to enjoy responsibly. In the ever growing wine market, White wine is the most prevalent and popular of the still wine varieties however we often tend to stick to what we know, perhaps afraid to branch out and try new things. Wine is growing in quality and affordability and we have selected three white wines which perhaps you may have heard of but haven’t tried which we definitely think 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Spanish classic white, Albariño is beautifully restrained, aromatic and elegant. This particular wine boasts peach and citrus with plenty of stone fruit. A crisp wine perfect for enjoying on its own or with food such as Shellfish and Roast Chicken. False Bay Wild Yeast Chenin Blanc (South Africa) Considered the work horse of the South African wine industry, Chenin Blanc is a classically French

grape. This particular Chenin has a bready aroma due to its natural wild yeast fermentation. Its taste and finish is similar to the nose leaving some complexity and herbal notes. Tabali Reserva Viognier (Chile) Viognier is a grape variety that produces full, creamy wines with bucket loads of character. This particular wine from Chile is a full bodied foodie type of wine with flavours of dried apricot, white peaches and candied fruit, perfect to enjoy with rich seafood such as Langoustine and also Thai food. All wines are available from Premier Cru Fine Wine, Guiseley.

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Menston, Guiseley, Yeadon, Rawdon, Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope and Adel areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes

to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HORSFORTH – A HIVE OF ACTIVITY Article by SJ Windridge-France www.sjonlegs.com

Just a whisper from Leeds city centre, the affluent town of Horsforth really does have it all. Known for the latter part of the 19th Century as the village with the largest population in the United Kingdom, Horsforth even has its own museum to celebrate its history. Horsforth exercised its right to call itself a town in 1999 after establishing its Parish Council. Horsforth continues to grow from strength to strength, boasting its own University; Trinity & All Saints, several reputable schools and more than a handful of churches, all of which encourage the strong sense of community here. With a railway station, a number of regular bus routes to neighbouring towns and the city, and with Leeds/ Bradford Airport on its cusp, it is easily accessible and popular with commuters. The beautiful expanse of green at its heart is Hall Park. Truly a place for community in all seasons, Hall Park encourages activity and life. It sports a Japanese Garden, a newly refurbished children’s playground, a skate park, a bowling green and Horsforth Hall Park Cricket Club who have very recently celebrated their 125th anniversary. July when the weeks of local creativity will come together in a weekend of artistic celebration; culminating in family picnics, with crafts, knitting bombing, treasure trails and other activities, including the ‘If You Find

HORSFORTH ‘WALK OF ART’ IS TYING ITS LACES AND RARING TO GO! Horsforth’s inaugural Walk of Art is set to take place over the weekend of the 4/5th of July 2015. The event will kick off at the farmer’s market with hands on activities for passers–by, local school choirs singing and an exclusive peek of the absolutely enormous Community Blanket, contributed to by over 100 residents. The walk of art map is split into 4 routes – though one can pick and choose where they would like to start and go depending on what they would like to see and how far they’d like to walk. Nearly 70 artists, writers, musicians and craftsmen and women exhibiting and showcasing their work over 46 ‘stops’ in and around Horsforth. There are also 30 spray painted wheelie bins to find as well as 47 windows across the 3 main High Streets of Horsforth housing work from every Primary School and the High School in Horsforth. There are also 16 drop in or pre-register activities, lectures and workshops as well as 21 ‘try your hand at’ activities – most of which will suit visitors of all ages.

The local community have embraced this arty adventure and have let their creativity, imagination and passion for Horsforth and the Arts collide in this extraordinary day. The entire day is free to participate for both the artists and walkers. Local resident and organiser Lara Rule says “I wanted this weekend to be completely inclusive to all. It was an important aspect that everyone involved gives their efforts and time freely in order for everyone in the community to be given an opportunity to try their hand or view creativity in a different light without financial pressures.” Lara added: “The Horsforth Centre for Counselling and Redbrick Properties have covered the costs of printing maps for the weekend and creating To Let style boards highlighting participating venues. I think removing funding for all other aspects has been the key to this event’s success so far. I only ask that if the artists have been successful through this weekend that they donate whatever they feel to be fair to one of the charities the walk of ART are supporting this year. Local People should they wish can drop some pennies into jam jars around the walk which will go to putting on some more fun events throughout the year”. The WOA takes place 4/5 July 2015. TOUR DE TONY PASSMORE MoreAbility MD, Tony Passmore, recently completed his latest charitable stint which saw him concur a 5 day, 500km cycle across the tough terrains and humid able heat of Burma raising £3,000 for the William Merritt Disabled Living Centre. MD cycles 500km across Burma raising £3,000 for The William Merritt Centre.

Moreability, part of the Passmore family, have worked in partnership with the William Merritt Centre for a number of years, promoting & supporting independent & safe living in and around the Leeds area. The local charity has been under notice for some time as the NHS owned building, St Marys Hospital, is being considered for redevelopment within the Trust. Occupied for over 30 years the centre needs to relocate at the same time as becoming an independent Social Enterprise as a result of austerity cuts in 2013. This means they are now an independent charity & social

enterprise rather than working within the NHS restraints. “We have worked with the centre for a number of years, the aim and driver behind both service organisations is the same – to promote and help achieve independent and safe living. I am no cyclist, I hate it, but I had to do something to help. I was also born at the Hospital which adds further gravitas and really hits home.” MoreAbility specialise in adapting stylish and safe bathrooms for those with limited mobility “just because a bathroom needs to be safe

doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish, our main aim is ease of use for each individual” said Tony. “In working with the William Merritt Centre we aim to help more people achieve just that.” For further information, you can contact More Ability by visiting the website: www. moreability.co.uk or phoning 0113 201 5030. SONG BIRDS SUFFER IN THE SHIVERING SPRING If you were still wearing your scarf and winter coat in late Spring as you ventured outdoors then spare a thought for our nesting song birds struggling to bring up the next generation. If you provide food for your garden birds during the spring then have a gold star. This acts as a fast food restaurant for the adults and keeps them fit and healthy while they raise their brood. What you may not know is that their chicks can only take natural food in the form of insects. The life cycle of insects is closely bound to the weather and low temperatures mean that fewer adult insects emerge. Consequently birds have fewer caterpillars to feed to their chicks. Even if insects have laid eggs, the rate of growth of the caterpillars

COUNCILLOR PAUL WADSWORTH A great many more streets in Guiseley & Rawdon will have just been moved over to the new alternate weekly collection service. Other areas have had the service since November 2013, so by the time you read this most of the ward, in fact most of the suitable properties across the city, should be under the new bin collection system. If you are affected by the changes, the Council should have written to you with an information pack that provides details about the service and a calendar of your new 18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

will be slow. Add wind and rain and valuable insect larvae are washed from the leaves. If the weather is bad during the incubation period then the male will usually feed the female as she sits on the nest, he may even take a turn at incubating while the female feeds. The problem starts when the eggs hatch and both parents are needed to feed the growing brood. Young chicks are not able to regulate their own body temperature so they need a parent bird to keep them warm and dry in the early stages of growth. If the cold weather persists, only one parent is available to bring food while the other protects the chicks from hypothermia. As the chicks grow, more food is needed at a greater frequency and a single parent isn’t able to sustain that amount of responsibility. Without both parents providing food, chicks inevitably die from malnutrition. If both parents look bin collection dates. Most households should have one green bin and one black bin, and as the name of the service suggests they should be emptied on alternate weeks. The Council says it is part of the commitment to increase recycling and reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill, which in turn saves money and allows investment in making the whole service better. Of course it still represents a change for many residents, so if there are any problems please feel free to let me know. In my role as shadow spokesman for environmental services, I will be watching closely to see how roll-out of

Often the parents abandon the nest so that they can keep themselves healthy but for most species, there is only one nesting attempt each year. Unfortunately this is happening right now in our gardens and woodlands and many nests have already failed. You probably need a tissue now! Life’s hard out there folks. Finally this month, it was very pleasing to see that funding has been agreed to make improvements at the city’s leisure centres, including our own Aireborough Leisure Centre. Our local centre has been in need of repair for a number of years, and now it’s set to receive investment to refurbish the changing rooms and reception area, remodel the car park and update the CCTV. Hopefully all the work will be complete by early next year and users can look forward to a much improved leisure facilities. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley & Rawdon Ward

BLUE CROSS PET CHARITY

can see all the pets and all the information about rehoming them at www.bluecross.org.uk.

Blue Cross pet charity has been dedicated to helping poorly, injured and abandoned pets for over 100 years. They opened the world’s first animal hospital in 1906 and since then their doors have never closed to sick and homeless animals.

The nearest rehoming centre is in Thirsk, North Yorkshire and all their pets for rehoming are also on the website. Pet profiles include a few photos of the pet, often video too, an outline of their personality and the type of home they are looking for.

Today they run four animal hospitals, 12 rehoming centres and a network of volunteer foster schemes across the UK, providing treatment and seeking happy homes for thousands of cats, dogs, small pets and horses every year.

Volunteers are often needed to help look after homeless cats. They are supported with training, veterinary costs for the cats in their care and special equipment including special ‘cat chalet’ accommodation in their garden or a spare room. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer cat foster carer call Michelle Smith, Regional Volunteer Foster Manager on 0300 777 1921 or email fosteringnorth@bluecross. org.uk for more information.

There are volunteer foster schemes across West Yorkshire with homeless and unwanted cats always needing a loving home. Anyone interested in rehoming a Blue Cross pet

OUTDOOR ADVERTISEMENTS AND SIGNS I get a lot of queries about the legality of various advertising signs that spring up around the area. This falls under the Planning Control system within the Town & Country Planning Act, in force since 2007. The legislation covers a huge amount of different types of advertisements – posters, placards and boards, fascia and projecting signs, models, estate agent boards, captive balloons, flags, price displays, traffic signs and town and village name signs. Any signs must meet certain criteria including – to be 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

kept clean, tidy and safe; not obscuring the interpretation of any official signs and be removed carefully when asked to do so. There are nine different types of advertising that are excluded from the direct control of the Planning Authority, an example of these would be signs completely within enclosed land e.g. sports stadiums; advertising on moving vehicles, e.g. buses; flying a national flag on your property. There are however restrictions on illuminated signs within enclosed land e.g. in filling stations. Temporary signs have their own rules and there are six separate categories with rules on the

Rachel - a volunteer foster carer

Volunteers are also always needed for other Blue Cross activities - from education speakers, fundraisers and help with the pet bereavement support service. To find out more visit the website or call the 0300 790 9903. size, the projection and the illumination of such signs e.g. for sale boards, banners advertising local events. Other categories of advertising state how long such adverts can remain in place. For example, a house builder with properties still for sale can have flags flying but a construction site that is being screened by advertising hoardings is restricted to a 3 year period whilst the building work takes place. There are too many rules and categories to mention them all here but they are extensive and clear. Cllr. FAMILY MEDIATION – THE VOICE OF THE CHILD In the summer of last year the Government commissioned a report to look into the issue of involving children in out of court dispute resolution processes, including family mediation. The project was entitled “voice of the children”. The report recommended that all children and young people aged 10 and above should be offered the opportunity to have their voices heard during dispute resolution processes, including family mediation, if they wish. Within family mediation, specially trained and accredited family mediators who are trained Direct Child Consultants can speak to children as part of the mediation process. The benefit can be powerful and not only enable the child to feel part of the process and to have a voice

Advertorial

but also the mediator can assist by feeding back, with the consent of the child involved, their wishes and feelings, which may be the first time the parents actually hear from an impartial third person their child’s voice. It is and has been a tool for a number of years used by specialist family mediators. Separated couples are encouraged to consider family mediation as a means of resolving their private dispute as opposed to entering into what can often be acrimonious, expensive and lengthy Court proceedings. Family mediation can assist separated couples in planning arrangements for their children and also importantly maintaining a dialogue as parents. Sally Clark is a qualified Direct Child Consultant and an experienced accredited family mediator. METAL DETECTING By Andy Firth

I was first introduced to the wonderful hobby of metal detecting when my dad bought me my first metal detector in 1977, I was 10 years old.

1

. In 2000 I joined a local metal detecting club and met some great people, and it wasn’t long before my dream was realised and I found my first ‘old coin’ It was a cut qtr of a Henry III voided long cross penny, and it dates to between 1247 to 1279.

I spent many hours searching woodlands in Esholt, Guiseley, and found dozens of modern and pre decimal coins. From that moment on I was totally hooked on metal detecting and would venture out at every opportunity. I detected parks and woodlands for many years, finding plenty of modern coins and odd bits of jewellery but what I really wanted to find was something really old.

2 3

. Coins of this type are called ‘hammereds’ due to the method in which they are struck between 2 coin dies.

. It was common for coins to be cut this way in early medieval coins as there was no small coinage, a full coin is a penny, then cut in half to make 2 halfpenny’s and qtr’s to make farthings.

5

4

. Over the years I have been very lucky finding many hammered coins, highlights include been part of a group of 15 club members on a club site in Knaresborough where we found a scattered hoard of 178 hammered silver penny’s of Henry 1st, I found 19 of them, the coins date to 1100 to 1135. 22 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

. My best ever coin came last year, it was very deep and embedded in the clay, my heart jumped in my mouth as I broke open the clod and was greeted by the lovely colour of pure gold, I knew instantly what it was and it is at the top of every detectorists wish list, it is an Iron Age gold ’Stater’ from the Corieltauvi tribe, it dates to between 55 to 45 bc, it had not seen the light of day for over 2000 years and was in as good condition as the day it was struck.

I have found many wonderful coins and artefacts over the years, from Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Medieval, way too many to mention here, my advice to anyone wanting to try this amazing hobby is join a club, or there are many detecting forums which will give lots of good advice, getting permission to detect from farmers can be very difficult, most of my best finds have come from club land and organised detecting rallies which are held all over the country. SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

June is bursting out all over, with green trees shrubs and flowers everywhere. This is the start of the enjoyment season, although still carrying out the routine tasks of weeding and lawn care. If we have a long dry spell, lift your mover blades slightly to keep the grass greener. If you have a favourite rose or shrub, this is the time to take softwood cuttings. Together with short lived perennials, such as wall flowers, pinks – including delphiniums and dahlias. When dahlias, delphiniums and sweet peas are growing well, you may pinch out the growing tips to make the plants bushier – which will result in a greater number of flowers. Trim any spring flowering shrubs and plants when the flowers have gone over, to keep them in the size you have available. Then take a look around in other gardens, is there something new you would like to complement your existing arrangements. Runner and French beans , together with peas will appreciate being sown now, and if space is short try climbing French beans for a delicious change. Leeks and brassicas plants sown earlier may be planted out in rows, where sweet corn should be planted

in a block pattern to aid pollination. In most areas it is necessary to net your fruit trees and brassicas, to save them from being eaten by our hungry feathered friends. It should be safe now to plant out your tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, although keep an eye open for indications of frost and cover them with horticultural fleece when necessary. Maintain a good supply of salad crops, by sowing small quantities every two weeks. Your outdoor pots and hanging baskets depend entirely on your selves for food and water, so start a routine regular watering, with a light feed every week to keep them flowering all summer.
