DEBUT NOVEL FROM MENSTON AUTHOR

As

My name is Robert Young and I have lived in Menston for the past twenty years. Seven years ago I decided out of the blue to write a novel, there's one in all of us right? Well a year later and the very rough manuscript was finished, of sorts. I decided to get the book pro-edited before I approached an agency or publishers, and to be honest it was money well spent. I learned a lot from the editor and it gave me the confidence to post it off to a number of London agents, twenty five in total. One by one the rejection letters came back, knocking my ego and making me wonder if the book was as good as I thought it was.

Th

Unperturbed I decided to carry on writing and wrote book two, a follow on from the first novel and what now formed part of a seven book series, or at least that was the plan. Two years later, research trips to Rome, New York and Luxor Egypt (my wife didn't mind this part of the process) and I'd completed books three and four.

two years to publish your book. Could be on day one, could be on day seven hundred and thirty. What happened knocked me for six... Two weeks before the book was due to be published, about a year later, the publishers went bust and I was sent back the intellectual rights to my story... Square one it would seem.

Late one night on line, there's plenty of those in the life of an author, I came across an independent publisher from Salisbury who it seemed would be a perfect fit for my novels... Sorry I should have mentioned, the books were and are aimed at the young adult market, I guess you'd call them historical fantasy, hence the Roman and Egyptian trips.

I'll admit it, I sulked for six months, licking my wounds and played the victim.

Long story short, I signed a two-year deal with the publishers and felt pretty smug. Now all that sounds great, but what it means in reality is the publisher has

I wrote a couple of short stories in the meantime and both of them were published in anthologies, confidence restored somewhat. I was then approached on social media (Facebook) by a publisher in Glasgow who where keen to put out 'Angel's Recruit' the first in the series. I'd put my website www.auctoratus up on the site and they'd taken a shine to it. OK, another long story short...

I signed the paperwork and sure enough at the beginning of March this year the book was released on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle, I was delighted. The feeling of euphoria however didn't last long.... A week after publication and they too went into liquidation. Right now I was feeling like I was Mr Jinx and the book was some kind of evil script which wasn't meant to reach the masses. What do you know an hour after I'd received the 'We're very sorry...' Email, yet another publisher approached me and offered to put 'Angel's Recruit' in to print... I was naturally sceptical. Well, I'm pleased to say this story does gave a happy ending. The book went straight to number one in the young adult charts on Amazon and guess what? Yes the publishers are still solvent! They want to publish the entire series and I've recently agreed (crossing my fingers).

HAVE I SEEN A RARITY? Summer is the most confusing time of year for new birdwatchers and it’s the time when I get the most calls, emails and photos about ‘mystery’ birds. Many people are convinced that they’ve seen something rare as they are not able to find an image of the bird they’ve seen in their fieldguide (their bird book). Has this happened to you? Here’s why.

you’ll struggle to identify it.

When people start to become interested in birds they (understandably) choose a fieldguide that shows them some pretty pictures. These are usually photographs. To ensure that the book is small enough to fit in your pocket, the photo has to be a decent size to provide any detail. The most colourful bird is usually the male so you get one large photo of a male and not much of anything else. Even if you have smaller photos or drawings of alternative plumages, they are very small so your eye is drawn to the large photo.

So why does this time of year produce additional problems? Firstly, after bringing up their brood of chicks, both male and female birds look pale, worn and tatty. If we take the blue tit as an example, one pair totalled 600 sorties per day when feeding a large brood of chicks. As they move in and out of the hole, the outer edges of their feathers become so worn that it affects the colour and shape of the adult birds. I have quite a few calls from people who are so certain that they’ve seen a crested tit in their local woodland because of this very situation. Does your fieldguide tell you where these birds can be found?

With some species of birds, both male and female are alike but with many birds, the male and female are different. This is called sexual dimorphism. So, if your fieldguide fits the description above and you’ve seen a female bird, then chances are

Secondly, think of all those fledged youngsters that are now fending for themselves. What do they look like? Blue tit babies are yellow where the adult’s white patches usually are. Many other young birds will look more like the female than the male but some

look completely different. It’s these birds, more than anything else, that create the most excitement amongst novice birdwatchers. Even experienced birders have to work harder to correctly identify some families of birds such as waders, gulls and birds of prey. So, today’s lesson is, when out birdwatching over the next few weeks, think about tatty adults and young fledglings. Remember that you’re more likely to see something common than something rare and make sure you read the text that accompanies each illustration in your fieldguide. I’ll happily recommend a fieldguide to you if you need any help in choosing one. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Menston, Guiseley, Yeadon, Rawdon, Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope, Otley and Adel areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a

little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GUISELEY: A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY Article by Councillor Paul Wadsworth

Guiseley is a small town with a proud history and an exciting future. Home to a number of manufacturing companies over the years, the tell-tale signs of its industrial heritage can still be seen, for instance with the old Parkinson’s Clock in the railway car park. The clock comes from the top of the original Crompton Parkinson Factory, which closed in 2004. A different kind of business also has its roots in Guiseley. In 1930 a certain Harry Ramsden opened what he claimed at the time to be the world’s biggest fish and chip shop – and it’s perhaps fitting that, though that original restaurant closed a few years ago, a new business has since opened on the same site. Building on this successful past, there is a healthy mix of small, independent businesses, as well as larger chains, all thriving in the town. Guiseley Retail Park is in the centre, and the Westside Retail Park sits between Guiseley and Yeadon. In some cases businesses are located on the sites of old factories or mills, preserving the link with Guiseley’s industrial past. The town has a supermarket, as well as numerous pubs, bars, restaurants, modern

brand name stores and even a farmer’s market. The Town Gate area near St Oswald’s Church also provides another shopping area. Local people are well served for sports facilities with Aireborough Leisure Centre located on The Green, and the town is also rightly proud of its football team, Guiseley AFC, which won promotion to the Conference Premier League last year. As a place to live, work and play, Guiseley is a fantastic place to call home.

MEMORIES OF A GUISELEY LAD: WILLS GILL Article by Brian Triffitt

Wills Gill, a hidden corner of Guiseley, ask people where it is and most folk in Guiseley have probably never heard of it, never mind tell you where it is. Wills Gills, as those who know it would call it, runs to the south east of Town Street at the junction of Moor Lane and Carlton Lane and down the back of Upper End Farm (which now has been converted into residential dwellings), for about six to seven hundred yards up to the fields that lead to the bottom of Yeadon Banks. In my child hood and even in later years the farm was owned and run by Pete and Phyllis Baker and their family, Pete’s brother Harry Baker owned Shaw Lane farm, both farms running almost next to each other, but at the end of the 1940’s Harry sold some of his land to form what is now the Queensway estate that started in the early 1950’s.

picnics and games, and of course with the beck that ran down from Carlton Lane that was a real draw for children, we used to dam it up in certain places to form large paddling pools in which we had loads of fun, unlike today the beck in those days had a good flow of clean water. We often took our boats right up to the far end of the field and sail them all the way back down to where the beck disappeared under Wills Gill lane and down to Guiseley rectory and beyond. C

As children if we went to the cinema at Yeadon, from where we lived on Moorland Crescent we would walk down Wills Gills, through the style at the bottom and follow the footpath to come out at the end of Union Street and down to Church Street, turn left to cross the bottom of Shaw Lane Gardens then it would be over Shaw Beck following the footpath across the fields to come out at Haworth Lane, up Chapel Lane and onto Yeadon High Street. In the 1940’s Wills Gills was a wonderful place, it was like a large picnic area, people would gather down there at weekends with their families for

MY

The far end of the field is where we had our cricket pitch, many a ball was lost as it sailed over the beck and into the hay field that stood next door.(lots of happy hours spent playing here). Our football pitch was still in the same field but in an area at the very top that ran parallel to Carlton Lane and onto the back of a cottage that stood there, CY

Another game or activity we used to play was throwing arrows, these were lengths of stick or canes with a cross cut into one end and then a cardboard flight inserted ,a groove was then cut around the stick just below the flight, you then had a piece of string and made a knot at one end, wrap the string round the groove and over the knot and the other end around your hand, then holding the pointed end of the stick with the same hand you would throw it as hard as you could using the string to propel it. Long sticks would go the furthest but a short one would be the ones to go up high. Pete Baker never gave us any problems with playing on his land, just as long as we didn’t cause any damage. They were good days way back then.

BOWER BUILDING AHEAD OF LIONS' SEASON Article by Sandy Beeson Photos by James Hedley

Guiseley AFC boss Mark Bower is busy preparing for the team's first ever assault on the Vanarama National League ahead of the big kick off on August 8th. Since winning promotion in dramatic style in the play-off final against Chorley in May, Bower has been working hard to ready the team for their debut season in non-league football's top flight. Pre-season training and friendlies are already in full swing as the club prepare to take on teams across the country, many of which are full-time including the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Wrexham and Grimsby Town. With the added pressure of competing with teams who train throughout the week, a greater emphasis than ever before has been placed on conditioning the players in the weeks leading up to the season opener away at Welling United. The Lions have faced Huddersfield Town, Barnsley and Bradford City during pre-season to prepare for home clashes in August against

Manager Mark Bower and player-assistant Danny Boshell

Altrincham, Kidderminster Harriers, Aldershot Town and Gateshead. “The lads have done a lot of hard work with the running and football work in training. Everyone is fit and ready to go," Bower said. “We've made sure players don't play for too long as we build them up throughout the pre-season schedule ahead of a historic campaign for the club." The majority of the promotion-winning squad from last season have signed on for the club's maiden Vanarama National League campaign. Bower added: "We were always keen to keep on the majority of last season's squad as we have a great team spirit in the dressing room and that goes a long way. "We've also been able to add some extra quality in there as well so we're raring to go." A GUIDE FOR SEPARATED PARENTS THIS SUMMER As family solicitors and mediators we assist separated parents on a daily basis in relation to arrangements for their children. In our experience as family professionals, a key tool in ensuring successful co-parenting is more often than not communication. Without effective communication, separated parents will often find themselves experiencing what feels like an endless battle with their ex-partner in an attempt to raise their children. The summer holidays can be the biggest challenge for separated parents due to the length of time the children are away from school and out of their term time routine. There will be parents out there no doubt who year on year experience difficulties with their ex-partner in making arrangements for their children and would welcome a fixed arrangement imposed by a Court so that they do not have to communicate with the other parent. As family solicitors, we can say quite simply that unfortunately a Court Order does not always resolve these problems

What we do

Advertorial

successfully. Whilst the Court may make a Child Arrangements Order which stipulates, for example, that a child should be with each parent for 3 weeks during the summer holidays, the specific timetable for that contact will commonly be left to the parents to agree. Again, even with a Court Order in place communication becomes essential to make successful arrangements over the summer holidays including overseas travel. It can be extremely helpful to communicate the full details of the travel arrangements with the other parent including the departure/arrival airports and times, the duration of the holiday, accommodation and an emergency contact telephone number. Not only will this reassure the other parent who may be anxious about the child travelling overseas due to the choice of destination, the length of time the child will be away for or due to this being the first holiday with a parent, it will also demonstrate a commitment to co-parent. The sooner plans are communicated the better. If you would like advice or assistance, our family solicitors and mediators Sally Clark and Laura Clapton would be happy to discuss your family situation. Call 0113 357 1315.

LOCAL NEWS STREET FUNDRAISING A lot of people have asked me whether there are any rules around charities and other fundraisers operating in the city centre. An agreement is in place to control the numbers of charities operating at any one time and which streets they can operate in. Leeds has a formal agreement between themselves and the PFRA (Public Fundraising Regulatory Association). Working with the PFRA saves the Council having to get agreements in place with all the various different charities and not-forprofit organisations.

SUBURBAN SERVICES Do you offer a service to local people? Don’t keep it to yourself tell our 1000’s of readers and serve them well! email sales@suburbanleeds.co.uk or call 0113 819 8141

These agreements are selfregulating not legally binding. There are stipulated streets where they may operate and the numbers of people operating at any one time is also stipulated. There are also different days of the week when different teams can operate in stated areas. No fundraising can take place on a Saturday or Sunday and on other days they can only operate between the hours of 9am and 6pm. Only one charity will be on any one site on any one day. There must always be a team leader. When fundraisers are found to be working outside of agreed locations they must comply with the requests of Local Authority officials and reposition themselves.

To give you an idea of what is allowed, see below: Kirkgate – 2 Fundraisers plus Team Leader Monday, Wednesday and Friday only Lands Lane – 2 + Team Leader Monday, Wednesday and Friday only Briggate – 4 + Team Leader Monday, Wednesday and Friday only Albion Place – 4 + Team Leader Tuesday and Thursday only Bond Street/Commercial Street – 4 + Team Leader Tuesday and Thursday only Cllr. SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, the garden is full of flowers and the fruit is ready for picking. Vegetables and salads are tasting delicious, tomatoes, cucumbers and melons are growing full of promise. So back to the more mundane tasks, deadheading your roses and flowering shrubs. Then cutting back large perennials which have finished flowering, and the happy exercise of weeding. This is a good time to spread a general fertiliser around the garden, to give all your plants a boost after the hard work of producing flowers. This is especially important for Camellias and Rhododendrons, as they will be making their buds for next spring – also keep them well watered in dry spells. Look out for autumn flowering bulbs, especially colchicum, which sends flowers up before the leaves. If you grow prepared hyacinths for Christmas, this is the month to start them off in the dark. At the end of this month trim all your hedges and topiary specimens, then do the same with your gooseberry and current bushes. Summer raspberries are pruned after the last fruit is gathered, cutting out only the stems which have fruited Strawberry runners should be cut from the parent plant, and planted separately to provide new plants for next year. Keep a sharp eye open for tomato and potato blight, pick off any damaged leaves, then spray the compete plant with an approved fungicide. This also applies to green, white and black fly, which may appear very quickly – using you finger and thumb for individual clusters, otherwise your organic or chemical spray to control them. If you wish to grow bi annual plants, such as wall flowers, start them off in a seed tray ready for planting out when they have grown

to a reasonable size. And finally, if you wish to improve your bare patches of soil where crops have already been harvested, consider a green manure. There are many to choose from, which grow over the winter and are dug in before they flower in the spring.
