advertisers, contributors and readers. We are now working on edition 26 which will deadline 31st March 2017.

From our April edition, we would like to start giving a mention to upcoming local Spring/Summer Fairs. If you are organising a community event, please feel free to forward us the details and we will try and include a mention in the magazine. Really enjoyed looking at all the photos sent in last month for our funny/cute pet photos. We chose a local rescue centre (details further on in the magazine) to donate the funds to this month (£10 per pic printed). Hopefully the photo’s will keep coming in and we will choose another charity for next month’s donation. Thank you as always to our valued

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly

feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope, Adel, Rodley, Calverley and Farsley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good

job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of

effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SPRING VERSUS SURVIVAL AS SEASONS OVERLAP Late winter/early spring is always an interesting time to be out watching birds. There’s lots of different types of behaviour to observe and you may also be able to predict the weather systems to a certain degree. When the weather is warm and dry, birds can find enough food to maintain a good weight. They won’t lose a lot of fat during the night so, after a quick feed in the morning, our resident birds will sing to announce their new breeding territory and attract a mate. Some may have already paired up and you might have witnessed robins posturing to fend off rivals or the fluttering display flight of blue tits and wrens. It’s also possible to see birds checking out nesting sites or choosing nesting material. During warm weather our winter visitors will feed then, when their crops are full, they will sit in the sunshine and preen. Winter visitors will remain for a few weeks yet but, during warmer weather, their presence is not as well tolerated by our resident birds. Look out for scuffles in your garden as our resident blackbirds drive off the chunkier, visiting blackbirds. A visiting male will have a darker beak than a resident male which has a bright yellow beak. When a cold weather system is imminent, early breeding behaviour will stop. Survival is the priority once more and birds will begin to feed frantically to ingest enough calories. You’ll be able to observe this behaviour at your feeders and bird tables. Lots of activity before dusk indicates a cold night (and a good sign that your car windscreen will be iced over in the morning). You can really help by keeping your feeders full at this time and put out plenty of fat. The seed and berry supply is scarce in late winter and some birds may have to travel to find enough food to survive. You could get something interesting feeding in your garden so keep your eyes peeled and your binoculars close by. Think of all those waxwings I wrote about last time. Because we have a lot of waxwings and redwings in the country, our berry supply has plummeted. Those gentle waxwings have now turned into voracious swarms, stripping a whole tree of berries in a few hours the moving on to look for more food. If you know of any berries that haven’t been eaten, then watch

them like a hawk! The probability is increasing that waxwings will turn up there in the next few weeks. Our winter migrants will eventually begin to gather and travel northwards and eastwards towards our coasts. Once they can be sure that enough food will be available at their breeding grounds, they will take advantage of a southerly wind and cross the sea to places such as Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and Northern Russia. Weather conditions will determine the timing of their departure and they may delay this journey until well into April. This means that we have a few weeks when it is possible to find both winter and spring visitors in the UK. Before our winter visitors depart, a convenient southerly breeze will bring us the stuttering, metallic sound of our first warbler, the chiffchaff, singing high on exposed branches. Other early spring migrants include wheatear, ring ouzel and sand martin. Look out for sand martins arriving at the artificial sand martin bank at Rodley Nature Reserve at the beginning of March. Other spring migrants will follow in quick succession and we’ll talk about them next time. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR LEEDS Article provided by The Thoresby Society

Origins and background The Thoresby Society is the Leeds historical society, committed to generating interest in the history of Leeds and its neighbourhood. Its origins in a letter sent by Edmund Wilson, a leading solicitor with offices in the Red Hall, to the Yorkshire Post and the Leeds Mercury, which they published in March 1889 in which he advocated the formation of a local history society for the purpose of collecting and preserving materials for the history of Leeds. It was created by a public meeting a few months later first under the name of the Leeds Historical and Antiquarian Society. Shortly afterwards it was decided to change the name to the Thoresby Society, to honour the first historian of Leeds, Ralph Thoresby (1658-1725). Fenay Hall Excursion, 1896

8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Its founding Secretary was Professor Cyril Ransome, Professor of Modern Literature and History at the then Yorkshire College, who is now best remembered as the father of the author Arthur Ransome. It also contained many of the leading names of late-Victorian Leeds. Its collections: From its origin, the Society has collected manuscripts,

photographs and printed material related to the history of Leeds. It publishes an annual book of research studies, with some additional special publications. In 2015, it produced two volumes celebrating the tercentenary of the publication of Ralph Thoresby’s Ducatus Leodiensis [photograph], and publishing in full for the first time his autobiographical Review of his Life, 1658-1715. Throughout the autumn and winter months the Society holds monthly meetings with lectures, and in November a lunchtime lecture series, which in 2016 presented four talks on ‘Women in 19thcentury’ Leeds. It welcomes links with other local historical organizations, and offers of lectures and/or articles for its annual publication. New members are welcomed. Its new home, at the Leeds Library: Thoresby had been tenants of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society at Claremont, Clarendon Road, since the early 1960s, and has shared premises since early in the century, but separated and moved in 2015 to its new home and partner, the Leeds Library. This library is now the oldest surviving private subscription library, founded in 1768, and housed since 1808 in its elegant combination with ground-floor shops on Commercial Street. Our new landlords have made generous space available for the Thoresby collections

Excursions: From its early days, the Society has conducted excursions during the months of summer. The first took place on 11 July 1891 to Kirkstall Abbey, acquired by the then ‘town’ from the Cardigan estate with 15 acres of parkland

with the assistance of Edmund Wilson in 1890. Subsequent visits took them to Kiddal Hall and Barwick-in-Elmet (in 1891) and to Sherburn and Saxton Churches and Towton Battlefield in 1892. Our accompanying photograph records a Society excursion to Fenay Hall (built 1605-17), near Huddersfield, in June 1896 [photograph]. Excursions continue today, although dress codes have changed, with visits in 2016 to Burton Constable House, east of Hull, which holds many items of Ralph Thoresby’s original personal museum and to Stank Hall Barn, Beeston, a little-known treasure of Leeds. Plans

for 2017 include visits to the Barnbow munitions site and to Sledmere House, home of the Sykes family, self-proclaimed ‘conquerors of the Wolds’. Publications: The Thoresby volume for 2016 is a little delayed, but will shortly be published: Voices from Wartime Leeds 1939-1940: Three Mass Observation Diarists. It publishes the diaries of three outsiders who found themselves in Leeds during the period of the ‘phoney war’. For further details and contacts please visit - www.thoresby.org.uk

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

March is full of madness, like the weather and your activity requirements. So, if the weather is warm, it all starts now, if not hesitate on the starting blocks until it cheers up. The true colour of spring is starting to arrive, with stunning crocus, early daffodils and many other spring bulbs. Once the early flowering shrubs have finished their display, give them a good trim to maintain their shape ready for next year. Also, divide snow drops in the green after flowering, if you want to spread them more around the garden. Onto the borders, give them a good spring clean – dig up and divide any perennials that have spread too far, or are very woody in the centre. Finish any pruning and cutting back, and then insert any new plants or pots of bulbs. Enjoy planting gladioli, lilies and other summer bulbs for a colourful display. Finally, top dress the beds with a good general fertiliser, and wait for the stunning results. On the spring clean front, have a go at the weeds and moss on the drive and surrounding paths. When the lawn is dry, look at aerating and scarifying the surface. Then apply a spring lawn fertiliser, if necessary with weed and moss control additives. If you have some bare patches, leave these for 10 days after the above applications, then sow new grass seed to match the existing grass. This will start the grass growing, so when it reaches 3 inches, start to mow with the blades relatively high, and then lower them as the season progresses. In the vegetable areas, start to make your seed beds, again raking in your preferred fertiliser to give the plants a good start as they germinate. Small and often is the mantra for vegetable sowings, with parsnips, turnips, swedes, leeks, onions and broad beans all okay for warm conditions. This also includes early potatoes,

18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

which have been sprouted inside. If you have the facilities, start your broccoli, cabbages, brussel sprouts, cauliflower etc under cover, ready for planting out after the last frost. Finally, refresh your permanent outdoor pots – scraping off the top 2 inches of soil and replenishing it, together with an addition of a slow release fertiliser.

LIZ AND PHIL’S FURRY-TAIL ENDING You may remember in last month’s magazine we told you of Lurchers Liz and Phil who had been found separately as strays and fell in love when they both arrived at Dogs Trust Leeds. As we went to press, Liz had found her furry-tail ending but Phil was still waiting. We are happy to say Phil has now also headed off to his forever home and is settling in well. Dog abandoned on Valentine’s Day finds love A dog found tied to a park gate on Valentine’s Day with a note around her neck has found love again thanks to Dogs Trust Leeds. METAL MATTERS I have received information about the Council’s Metal Matters campaign that begins at the end of February and runs until 12 May 2017. The aim of the campaign is to encourage residents to recycle metal from around the home. The Council has teamed up with AluPro, who represent UK metal manufacturers, M&S and Unilever to run the Metal Matters campaign for the next 12 weeks in Leeds.

Metal Matters raises awareness of what metals can go in your green bin and why it’s important to recycle as much as we can to reduce carbon and save money by diverting it away from disposal. In Leeds, the average household uses 600 food cans, 380 drinks cans and 182 foil trays a year and each one is endlessly recyclable. Some of this is captured in the green bins but we need to do more as we strive to reduce the 306,000 tonnes of waste we collect

from across the city each year. The Council will be raising awareness that Metal Matters, by sending an information leaflet to each household in Leeds with support from roadshows, social media, press work, bus advertising and posters in community buildings. LOCAL NEWS POWER OF ATTORNEY: DON’T LEAVE IT TOO LATE What is it and why do I need one? A power of attorney is a legal document that allows someone to make decisions for you, or act on your behalf, if you’re no longer able to or if you no longer want to make your own decisions. There are a number of reasons why you might need someone to make decisions for you or act on your behalf: •

This could just be a temporary situation: for example, if you are in hospital and need help with everyday things such as making sure bills are paid. Alternatively, you may need to make longer-term plans if,

This is not the case. Farsley Celtic FC Article by Paul Hatt Farsley Celtic FC can trace its origins as far back as 1908, with the club playing at its current ground, Throstle Nest since 1948. Throughout the 1950s and 60s Farsley established themselves in the Yorkshire Leagues, being crowned champions in 195960 and 1968-69. A First Round FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers at Leeds United’s Elland Road ground in 1974 proved to be the highlight of the 1970s, as a crowd of 11,000 saw the Celts lose 2-0 to a Steve Coppell inspired Rovers.

In addition to the Men’s firstteam, there is an Academy squad, four women’s teams and a number of age-range Boys and Girls sides, all supporting the philiosphy that Farsley Celtic is very much ‘one club’.

As the Yorkshire and Midland leagues merged in 1982, Farsley began in Division One North. By the mid 1980’s the club was invited into the Northern Premier League. In 2005-06 under the management of Lee Sinnott, promotion was secured after a playoff final victory against North Ferriby and in the following season, the club’s first in the Conference North, they reached the First Round of the FA Cup losing in a replay to MK Dons as well as securing promotion to the Conference National at Burton Albion’s ground, when a last minute penalty saw the Celts beat Hinkley United 4-3. However, the Celts were relegated at the end of the 2007-08 campaign and with on-going financial difficulties Administrators were appointed in June 2009 with the club disbanded in March 2010. The club re-formed and were placed in the NCEL Premier Division for the 2010/11 season. It proved to be highly successful with a league and cup double recorded, ensuring

promotion to the Evo-Stik League First Division North. With this season due to end in April, and after excellent progress in the FA Cup, FA Trophy and West Riding County Cup, Farsley are well placed for promotion, so why not come down and support the team in their remaining home games? • • • • • •

The club is very much at the heart of the community attracting local sponsorship and a number of partnerships in the Leeds area. This includes, Albion Sports FC, Leeds Deaf FC, Farsley Flyers Running Club, UK Dance Twirl Association, Weight Watchers and Leeds Ultimate Frisby. They use, according to their individual needs, the range of club facilities including the floodlit outdoor grass training pitch, the floodlit five-a-side pitch, the Indoor Sports Hall and the Clubhouse Function Room and Bar. The Clubhouse is open during the evenings and the function rooms are also available for hire, bookable through Bar and Facilities Manager, Rob Yardley, tel: 0113 2557292 Paul Hatt Media Manager, Farsley Celtic FC phatt@farsleyceltic.com
