WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 26 of Suburban Magazine. I will start this month by apologising to any parents that had to explain the spelling differences to their children in our puzzle last month. As a reader quite rightly pointed out to me, I had used an American puzzle with a few words spelt differently. l had not given that a thought and had obviously not noticed but, I will be very careful from now on to watch out for that!

THE GREAT AVIAN EXCHANGE Over the next few weeks birdwatchers across the UK will be witnessing an avian exchange of epic proportions. Thousands of winter visitors including redwing, waxwing, brambling, swans, geese, ducks and waders will leave our shores to be replaced by spring migrants; many from as far away as Africa. The British countryside will be filled with the long-awaited sounds of swallows and martins, warblers, cuckoos and screaming swifts. Resident waders, such as curlew and lapwing, will move to grassland and moorland habitats to raise their young and our coastlines will once again play host to thousands of seabirds. Many have already arrived. Of course, it’s not always possible to take a trip to the coast or to the Yorkshire Dales so here are some places you can visit close to home to watch the winter departure and the arrival of our spring migrants. I’m using the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the River Aire to mark a linear route from Kirkstall to Calverley. Resident birds include grey wagtail, dipper, kingfisher, great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper and there are lots of warbler species in the spring and summer including blackcap, willow warbler, chiffchaff, whitethroat and garden warbler. 1.

Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve: Accessed from the Leeds Liverpool Canal or from Redcote Lane, this Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve is nestled between the canal and the River Aire. Look for water birds on the river, resident woodland birds and visiting warblers. Kirkstall Goit: Footpaths off Commercial Road, on the other side of the river, lead down towards a tributary of the River Aire and overflow channels. Good for resident birds, warblers and dragonflies. Kirkstall Abbey: Just past the shopping area, off Bridge Road, you’ll find a path near the cenotaph that leads to the grounds of the Abbey. Follow the beck and you’ll find yourself at the weir on the River Aire. You can follow the river for a short section to look for water and woodland birds, swallow and martins. Hawksworth Wood, Little Hawksworth Wood and Newlay Wood: You’ll find these beautiful woods a little way up the A65 towards Horsforth. The Hawksworth woods are opposite the entrance to the new Kirkstall railway station, straddling Hawksworth Road. Newlay Wood is on the same side as the railway station down Rein Road towards the River Aire. Look for woodland birds, warblers and water birds on Oil Mill Beck and the river. This path leads over the river bridge and back up to the canal.

Hollybush Conservation Centre: Pop into Hollybush for breakfast or a midday snack and look for birds in their garden before setting off down the canal towards Bramley. Watch for soaring red kite, buzzard and sparrowhawk above the valley. Canal walking: Scan the fields along the canal for skylark and lapwing and you may find heron, moorhen, mallard, reed bunting and Canada goose along the canal. The hedgerows and scrubland are home to visiting warbler species such as whitethroat, garden warbler and blackcap. Check out the lock overflow for grey wagtail and get close views of the River Aire from the tow path here. The bend provides calmer water and creates suitable feeding habitat for kingfisher, goosander, mallard and tufted duck. Bramley Falls Wood and station paths: At the first canal locks, climb the steps into this wonderful mature woodland which is home to jay, bullfinch, song thrush, goldcrest, nuthatch, treecreeper, wren and great spotted woodpecker. Listen out for your first spring migrant, the chiffchaff, singing high up in a tree. Exit the wood at the next locks and loop around the walkways to the station for more warbler species. Rodley Nature Reserve: On Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays you can visit this avian airport and tie in any of the sites mentioned so far. Check the fields for the last of the winter thrushes and look for the newly arrived swallow and sand martin. Finish your visit with coffee and cake at the visitor centre. Calverley Woods: Though adjacent to the canal, this wood is best accessed from Thornhill Drive. Here, in addition to great-spotted woodpecker, nuthatch, jay, treecreeper and goldcrest, you might be able to hear migrant blackcap singing.

LOCAL NEWS HORSFORTH SCHOOL Horsforth School student Ethan Wright was delighted to attend the switch-on of the lighting at Horsforth Cenotaph having raised £ 1020 to pay ongoing electricity costs by means of a sponsored swim supported by crowdfunding. “I'm pleased to say that my swim raised this fantastic amount so I want to thank all who so generously donated, my family, teachers and friends for supporting me and the Grammar School for generously waiving the pool hire cost.” Ethan, 15, was School ambassador to the last Remembrance Sunday service and played the

He is to be commended on the funds raised and for completing 89 lengths in 51 minutes, one length for each of the 89 Horsforth men who died in 1917. He’s an enthusiastic, determined but modest young man who greatly exceeded his initial target and as captain of the swim team he's an excellent role model for younger students” said teacher James Bovington before adding “Ethan has a special family connection to honour as his great great grandfather’s name will shortly be added to the Headingley

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly
feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Horsforth, Cookridge, Bramhope, Adel, Rodley, Calverley and Farsley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good
job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of
effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
April showers will bring May flowers, together with lots of exiting new growth. The seeds you have sown, or starting, will soon have little green shoots and a promise of things to come. The garden soil temperatures are very unpredictable, so do not plant out anything which may be spoilt by cold soil or frost. This month is the usual time for planting early and second early potatoes, which have been sprouted indoors. Make a deep planting drill dusted with fertiliser, and then bring the soil into a mound on the top. Keep an eye out for the foliage pushing through the soil, and be ready to protect this with extra soil if frost is forecast. Indoors, have a go at growing tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies etc, as they all need a long season to crop successfully. These plants then may stay indoors, or be planted out in the garden or pots in late May. The taste of fresh home grown fruit and veg is wonderful, and well worth the effort. The same goes for pots of herbs, mint, basil, rosemary and many others, as the smell will lift your spirits enormously. Keep on top of the weeds in the borders, and insert stakes for all the tall plants to save them being damaged with high winds. Then if you have any hardy annual seeds, try drawing patterns around your perennials with a hoe, and sowing them into the drills. This will not only look colourful, it will also reduce any bare soil for weeds to invade. As your bulbs start to go over, remember to give them a good feed for the next few weeks, to build them up for next year. If the clumps are very large, and not flowering very well, split them up after the foliage has died down to rejuvenate them. Lawns should be mown regularly as the grass starts to grow, and if possible the 22 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
cuttings should be composted with a good mix of crumpled newspaper, broken egg boxes and kitchen/garden waste. It is good to start a compost heap now, ready to use the material as mulch next year.

This created two lists entitled “I can offer” and “I can help with”. In a discussion on the day the “Litter Free Leeds” group was formed. They can be contacted via Facebook at Litter Free Leeds page. The next steps will be to follow up contacts and offers of help, maintain contact with key community representatives to keep momentum going, promote Litter Free Leeds groups and Keep Britain Tidy/Great British Spring Clean campaigns etc.

A HIDDEN GEM First time visitors to Rodley Nature Reserve invariably say “We never realized how big it was”. Many probably thought it was just a pond in a field but, as the Reserve map shows, it is a rich tapestry of wetlands, wild flower meadows, dragonfly ponds, coppice and a crop field – and just four miles from the centre of Leeds. April is a busy month on the Reserve for the birdwatchers as summer migrants start to arrive from Africa. Large bramble patches provide valuable breeding habitat for Common Whitethroats and Grasshopper Warblers. The Coppice provides a home for Blackcaps, Garden Warblers and Willow Warblers and both Sedge

Warblers and Reed Warblers will be announcing their presence on the wetlands in the latter part of the month. Learning all the different songs can be a challenge. Why not join the Reserve’s Spring Bird Walk on Sunday 21st May at 9.00am to learn some of them. Other birds are also arriving in April with the first few Sand Martins from sub-Saharan Africa in the last days of March. Sand Martins excavate their nest holes in sandy river banks but they have particularly taken to the Reserve’s man-made nesting bank on the Lagoon where 186 pairs nested last year. Common Terns spend the winter off the coast of West Africa but they will be arriving around the middle of April to nest on manmade rafts on the Lagoon. Good views of them can be obtained
from the new Lagoon Hide which was opened in May last year. You don’t need to be an avid birdwatcher to enjoy the Reserve. You can have a pleasant walk on well-maintained paths; there are plenty of seats and you can call in for a cuppa at the Visitor Centre. If you are or know someone who is a wheelchair user, it is worth knowing that most of the hides do have special facilities for wheelchairs. The Reserve is open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year from 9.00am (Visitor Centre from 10.00am) and there is no charge for entry. Dogs, other than registered assistance dogs, are not allowed. Further details can be obtained on the Reserve’s website at www.rodleynaturereserve.org

WRITING ON THE WHARFE ‘Writing on the Wharfe’ are a Menston based writing group which aims to provide a friendly and nurturing environment for its members to share their poems and short stories. The writers club was formed in about May 2015 by Ruxandra Busoiu. In April 2016, the name ‘Writing on the Wharfe‘ was adopted. Once a fortnight there is a meeting in Menston, upstairs at the Menstone club in Farnley Road, on a Saturday at 1.30 until about 3pm. There are no ‘lessons’, just a relaxed get-together of writers and would-be writers of any genre. Generally, members read a piece of their work, a short story, a poem, a blog post, a song, an extract from a novel or other longer piece in progress.

NEW INHERITANCE TAX ALLOWANCE – WHY IT MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU IF YOUR CURRENT WILL CREATES A DISCRETIONARY TRUST
RNRB. This is because these assets are not seen as passing directly to your beneficiaries – one of the eligibility criteria for the new RNRB.
Article by JH Wills & Powers of Attorney
The first step is to review your will in light of the new RNRB and consider your reasons for setting up the discretionary trust.
As more and more family estates are becoming liable for the tax (a 40% tax payable on the portion of a person’s estate above the Nil Rate Band, which is currently £325,000) the government are set to reduce the IHT burden on people who may wish to pass their family home to their direct descendants (children, stepchildren, adopted children, grandchildren or foster children), the government is phasing in a new top-up allowance – the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) – from April 2017. This will allow some estates to benefit from an additional tax-free allowance of up to £175k per individual (£350k per couple) by 2020/21. However, if your current will creates a discretionary trust as a tax-efficient way to leave your property to your children, the new top-up allowance may not apply to you. Here’s why
What you can do
For example, is the purpose of your trust to ensure that your assets, including property, will be passed on tax-efficiently or is it to ensure a level of protection and control over the assets, or a combination both? Are these reasons still valid or have your priorities or circumstances changed? An adviser can help you clarify your requirements and understand your options, including whether a discretionary trust is still the best option for you, so that you have a Will that continues to meet all your needs.
Conservatory Leaks fixed
Currently, when the first spouse dies, all their assets can be passed to the second spouse tax free and their Nil Rate Band (NRB) allowance of £325k can be transferred to the second spouse. This means that when the second spouse dies, there is a total NRB of £650k. In other words, no Inheritance Tax is payable on the first £650k of the second spouse’s estate. Prior to October 2007, it was not possible to transfer the NRB allowance. Therefore, many people set up planning within their wills in order to ensure that they benefit from both NRB allowances. This involves transferring the assets (up to the NRB) of the first spouse to die into a discretionary trust so that, for Inheritance Tax purposes, these will not be included in the estate of the second spouse when they die. If you have arranged for your property or qualifying assets to pass to your children in this way, your estate will not qualify for the new 32 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
