NEW YEAR'S PARTY
STEPCHANGE DEBT ADVICE
Reader’s Poem Submission
The office is closed, we're having a 'do' If the boss finds out, trouble will brew, It's New Year's party time, you see, Tonight we'll be as merry as can be. No-one will know we've had a few cans. All will be left spick and span. If the cleaner comes in (she's on a diet) We'll bribe her with gin to keep her quiet. Tony's brought drinks to fill a pub, Someone else has provided the grub. Darren is here – he's from Dispatch, His favourite saying is “Down the hatch”. Sean is telling his risqué jokes What is it with these rugby blokes? Steve (in sales) does his party trick, Balancing weights whilst doing a flip. We all have a go, between serious quaffing, Miserably fail and fall about laughing. Everyone's having a whale of a time, Must do this more often, it’s just sublime. 'Don't speak too soon' goes the old saying, But what could go wrong, the music's still playing. Then Matt and Olly, when having a tussle, Break the glass with too much muscle, Fire alarm sounds, sprinklers switch on, You'd think someone had dropped a bomb. Just when the shindig is in full swing, The lights go out and we can't see a thing. It's getting wet as the sprinklers pour, (Never needed wellies at a party before!) All hell breaks out, as we lurch for the door. Brigade's nearly here, ringing its bell, Forget the beer, we're running like hell. What happens next, we dare not think, All we planned was a friendly drink. The Job Centre beckons, its 'curtains' for us, That's after 'a word' we've had with 'the fuzz'. So if it's a party you have planned, Make sure it's the pub – you can only get banned! (Mrs) K Smith Guiseley 6 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Many people find themselves with debt problems when the New Year arrives. January is always the busiest month on our helpline and last January almost 60,000 people contacted us for debt advice. Debt can affect people’s mental and physical health and it can impact on their work and their relationships with family and friends. If you’re struggling with debt problems, first of all it’s important to remember you are not alone. Our recent research shows that 2.6 million UK adults are in severe problem debt and over one in five of us display at least one sign of financial difficulty. It can happen to anyone, at any time, and for a variety of reasons. At StepChange Debt Charity, we see the following as signs of financial difficulty: • • • • • •
making minimum repayments on credit commitments for three months or more falling behind on essential bills using credit to pay essential bills using credit to keep up with credit commitment using credit to make it through to payday getting hit with overdraft or late payment charges on a regular basis
If one or more of these apply to you, you might be in financial difficulty. If three or more apply to you, that difficulty could be severe. This list is not exhaustive and if you’re spending time worrying about money, or you think you might in the near future, it’s important to consider getting debt advice as soon as possible. If you think you need free, impartial and non-judgemental debt advice, call us on 0800 138 1111. We helped nearly 600,000 people last year and we’re here to help you if you need us.

FEEDING GARDEN BIRDS PART 3: CHOOSING BIRD FEEDERS FOR YOUR GARDEN Your choice of garden feeders really depends on type of birds you’re likely to attract and whether you have squirrels, but whatever your circumstances, you need to be able to clean them easily and quickly for it not to be a big chore. Here are my top tips for choosing the right bird feeders. 1. Don't go for bargain priced feeders It really is a false economy and you may be contributing to the ill health of your garden birds. Cheap feeders tend to be badly designed and poorly finished creating hazards for birds. 2. Check that the food ports have suitable drainage holes Poor drainage creates a breeding ground for mould and bacteria, and optimum growing conditions for the seed. If your seed is sprouting, it’s probably due to poor drainage. Have a look inside the bottom feeding port. Has it got holes? Are they blocked? When topping up your feeders, make sure that you poke out any dust that has accumulated at the bottom. If you find damp food in there, take the feeder apart and clean it. 3. Think squirrel! If there are no squirrels in your garden, buying plastic feeders will keep the initial cost down. Be aware though that plastics become brittle in UV light and you may have to replace them more often. If you have squirrels, then go for metal feeders that won't rust. The seed cylinder will still be plastic but the feeding ports, top, base and hanging mechanism will all be made of robust materials. Some feeders are housed in a squirrel-proof cage but this will deter woodpeckers from feeding, and young squirrels can sometimes squeeze themselves through the gaps. With most ‘squirrel proof feeders’ the squirrel will eventually learn to tip them at an angle and spill the food onto the ground. However, there is a model on sale that completely prevents them from accessing the food. As soon as a squirrel comes near the feeder, a metal sheath drops down to prevent them using the ports. If you hate squirrels, then this feeder will give you hours of fun! 4. Check how they're put together To prevent the spread of disease, good practice maintenance requires that you dismantle your feeders

regularly. Wash them in dilute iodine based disinfectant bought from specialist suppliers. Clean when the food cylinder starts to look opaque and poo has accumulated on the top. Dunking the feeders whole into disinfectant will not do the job effectively and may shorten the life of your feeder. When it comes to taking them apart, Attracting more species to bird feeders range your garden requires a little from the very simple research and some planning to the ridiculously complicated so, when buying new feeders, have a good look at how they’re put together. a) The top should be shaped to disperse raindrops and prevent the food from getting too wet. b) Look to see how many fiddly screws you have to undo to get them apart. If they are difficult to dismantle and put back together, you'll be less likely to clean them and you’re more likely to drop a vital screw when your hands are cold. I have one small feeder that comes apart by removing just one screw. Simple and beautifully designed. c) Ask yourself how easy it could be to damage the feeder during the process. There are feeders that require the use of pliers or mole grips to get them apart. Once you've done this they look scratched and the protective coating is easily removed from the metal.
Don't forget that not all birds can use hanging feeders so make sure that you provide food for birds that like to feed on the ground too. If you see blackbirds and robins trying to take food from your hanging feeders, be aware that they are doing this out of desperation. Give them a hand and put some food on the ground. FORGET DIVORCE MONTH, LET’S MAKE JANUARY ALL ABOUT MEDIATION January is supposedly the most popular month for issuing divorce proceedings. In January you will often see the headline “Divorce Month” with various statistics about the increase in divorces compared to other months throughout the year. Whilst it is generally the case that after the Christmas holidays we see an increase in the number of enquiries we receive from people separating, we at Consilia Legal are not fans of labelling January as “Divorce Month”. With “Divorce Month” comes connotations of acrimony, disputes and allegations. Coming into 2016 wouldn’t it be better to start the year with a more optimistic evaluation of the process of separation. Well, as solicitor mediators we can do just that. Over the course of the last 12 months, as a practice we have seen a dramatic
increase in the number of separated couples and parents taking the decision to engage in family mediation. The desired outcome of this process being that the parties concerned have been able to reach a consensus whether regarding finances, children or both which they are both content with. Therefore, enabling the couple concerned to separate with dignity and look to their future. We would like to predict that in January we will receive an influx of calls from people wanting to engage in family mediation, but we need to spread the word so that more separated couples can access family mediation and avoid costly, stressful and lengthy Court proceedings. So rather than associating January with court battles and arguments over children or money, at Consilia Legal we’d like to re-name January “Mediation Month”. If you would like to find out more about family mediation please contact Laura Clapton on 0113 357 1318 or laura@consilialegal.co.uk
