IT’S SPRING SWAP-OVER TIME Late May and early April is the time when we swap our winter visitors for our first spring migrants. Our winter visitors head to places such as Greenland, Iceland, the Arctic and Scandinavia and our spring migrants arrive from Africa and southern Spain. Of course, they need to be sure that they will be able to find enough food at their breeding grounds so, as you can imagine, the weather plays a big part in the timing of their departure. Winter visitors begin to move towards their destination but they may delay their departure from the UK until well into April. They’ll wait for a southerly breeze to help them on their way. Meanwhile, also waiting for a southerly breeze are our spring migrants from as far away as southern Spain and Africa. Over the last few weeks they have been moving northwards, feeding on insects along the way. These birds have to migrate to warmer climes in the winter as they rely on insects as their main food source. They can only advance northwards when the weather is suitable for insects to thrive. In Leeds, the first sign of spring migration is the sound of the chiffchaff, in or around the second week of March. This little warbler has a thin, stuttering and metallic ‘chiff-chaff’, ‘chiff-chaff’ song and it likes to sing from tall trees as it looks for a territory. Around this time, birdwatchers will also be out looking for other early migrants such as wheatear, ring ouzel and sand martin. Wheatears have a characteristic white rump and can be found on rough ground looking for insects. They are gradually making their way to grassy moorland habitat but could easily turn up in your local field or manure pile. Ring ouzels are mountain blackbirds. They have a white band around their chest, and scaly feathers, and are heading up to wooded ghylls on moorland habitat. Many of you will know the sand martin. They traditionally nest in sandy river banks but they take very well to artificial nest sites placed near water at nature reserves. Rodley Nature Reserve installed

an artificial sand martin bank which was used in the first spring and has been a great success. Swallows and little ringed plover have already been seen in the Lower Aire Valley in Leeds so do keep your eyes peeled. Both these birds can be seen at Rodley Nature Reserve. As we move into April, the beautifully melodic sound of the willow warbler will become the sound of summer. This bird looks very similar to the chiffchaff but sounds very different. It prefers lower growing trees in more open habitat. Their song is also thin but it is sweet, starts off high and gradually descends down the scale, like a waterfall. Arriving about the same time as the willow warbler is the blackcap. This warbler is larger and likes dense shrubs. The male is grey with a black cap; the female has a ginger cap. Male blackcaps have a fast, fluty song which sounds like a blackbird played at high speed. Some of you may have had blackcaps overwintering in your garden but these are not the same birds that breed in the UK. Look and listen for spring visitors in your area and get in touch if you need any help identifying them. THE
Reader Recipe
Bake for about 10 minutes and until golden on top. Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to rest for 10 minutes before you touch them (this allows the coconut oil to solidify again, the cookies may crumble if you don’t do this).
GUILT FREE ALMOND COOKIES What you will need: Baking Tray Baking Paper Ingredients 1 Cup of almond meal ¼ Cup of dark chocolate chips ¼ teaspoon of Himalayan pink salt (optional) ½ teaspoon baking powder ¼ cup Stevia (sugar substitute) 3 tbsp coconut oil 1 tbsp milk of choice (I used almond) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING... Last month we asked our readers to try out our delicious Banana Bread. Here’s what some of you had to say...
Method Pre heat oven to 170 deg. Line a baking tray with baking paper. In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients (almond meal, dark chocolate chips, salt, baking powder & stevia). In a microwavable bowl, microwave coconut oil, milk and vanilla essence until melted (approx 30 seconds). Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well until combined. Using your hands, form and shape your cookies
“It's the first time I have baked anything since having my baby girl 14 weeks ago so I needed something simple - this was perfect, easy to make and tastes great!” Leanne from Horsforth
First time I've ever done this! Success - family loved it. Thank you very much. Barbara
For the optional chocolate topping, I simply mixed a handful of chocolate chips and a tablespoon of coconut oil and microwaved until melted and drizzled on top of the cookies. Kindly provided by Natalie M of Yeadon Thank you to our readers for the feedback on last months recipe. We would love any feedback on this recipe and maybe a picture if you have made these! If you have a favourite recipe that you may wish to share please forward to us (with a photo if possible) to editorial@ suburbanleeds.co.uk and we will try and include in a future edition thank you.

GUISELEY LIONS CLUB AND OTLEY LIONS CLUB BOTH SUPPORT LOCAL DEFIBRILLATOR CAMPAIGN In 2013 Brian Firth, following the death of a customer at a local supermarket, launched a CPAD Campaign (Community Public Access Defibrillator), to have them installed around Aireborough and Wharfedale. Brian told Suburban Magazine, “It is a proven fact that if a person goes into Cardiac Arrest their chances of survival are substantially increased when a defibrillator is readily available. The value of this Life Saving equipment was proven when local Cllr Ryk Downes recently collapsed in Cardiac Arrest whilst out running. Bystanders commenced CPR and used the nearby Campaign Defibrillator, thankfully shocking his heart back into a normal rhythm. The Campaign was given a head start by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service who installed 6 defibrillators throughout the area to help create the initial awareness. Brian has received support from a number of other charities and organisations and now has 33 installations plus 2 on order. He has also been awarded funds for an additional 3 for the Bramhope

and Adel area from `The Wellbeing Funding` awarded by the local Ward Members through the Outer North West Community Committee. Both the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and The British Heart Foundation have awarded CPAD`s to the Campaign, plus funding from Otley Bid and Aireborough Soroptimist`s. Clifton Village Hall has just ordered one funded by their own fund raising activities.
A recent installation in Rawdon was a combined community effort. Cllr Paul Wadsworth contacted Brian to inform him that the Rawdon Cricket Club had their own defibrillator and had kindly offered to have it fitted to an external wall for Public use. Brian, in conjunction with Leeds Neurophysiotherapy who are based in Rawdon, provided an external locking cabinet. Cardiac Science and CeTek are supporting this campaign by providing the best defibrillators and security cabinets on the market at heavily discounted prices. The Campaign is also receiving support from local Councillors, the most notable ones being Cllr Peter Jackson and Cllr Paul Wadsworth, with Cllr Graham

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION INITIATIVES TO TACKLE DOG FOULING The Council’s Environmental Action Service receives around 2200 complaints each year relating to dog control issues, 1000 of these are about dog fouling. I myself report this on a regular basis from the complaints I receive from local residents. Leeds mirrors the rest of the country, people are frustrated with the minority of dog owners who fail to act responsibly. We need more creative strategies to deal with this. The Council has legal powers they can use to take action; where offenders are identified a fixed penalty notice of £75 can be issued. Failure to pay will result in a prosecution where the maximum fine for a guilty verdict is £1000. Due to lack of witnesses there are only 30 fixed penalty notices each year. A further 45 are issued for stray dogs, dogs entering an exclusion zone and owners refusing to put dogs on a lead when instructed. Behaviours need to change as enforcement alone is not likely to achieve the desired result. A Dog Watch scheme has been set up in Garforth to mobilise the community into taking action themselves and create peer pressure which stops irresponsible dog owners from allowing their dogs to foul. Hot spot areas were identified and signs put up. In Harrogate there is a “We are Watching You” campaign with glow in the dark posters at known hot spots. This, along with a “flat it, bag it” event, saw a decrease of 80-90% in dog fouling. Cllr. COUNCILLOR PAUL WADSWORTH SPEAKS We reach an extremely important crossroads for our area this month, as Leeds-Bradford Airport consults the public on its ‘Route to 2030’ plan. This has so far gone largely unnoticed, but it could define the future of one of our largest employers, as we are all asked how we would like to see the ever-increasing number of passengers managed. Crucial issues such as access, noise and employment are up for debate and as the Chair of our Community Committee I am keen to see as many people involved as possible. With this in mind, I have organised a special meeting on the 19th of April at 4:30pm at Yeadon Town Hall. This meeting is the best chance you will have to put your questions to the Airport, as the business’ leaders will address your concerns in public. I have worked hard to ensure that the Airport takes your views seriously and by working together, we can secure our community a productive relationship with the airport for years to come. For those interested in the Airport’s plans on everything from its commercial future to public transport, they are available to the public online or in Yeadon and Guiseley Libraries throughout the second week of April. Whether you are able to attend the meeting or not, I urge everyone to respond to the airport’s consultation either online or by post, as it closes at the end of April. Such a large organisation inevitably has an impact on all of us who live nearby, so we must not miss out on this once in a decade opportunity to get our voice heard. If we want to see real change in the future, we need to step up. Only by taking the time to express our opinions and properly examining the issues can we build the future that Aireborough needs. As a Councillor, I meet so many people who are passionate about all the issues which face our community. When it comes to the airport, I hope this comes to the fore. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley and Rawdon Ward Chair, North West Outer Community Committee Shadow Spokesperson for Environment and Community Safety Member of LBIA Consultative Committee
