CAN YOU GIVE A HOME TO SWIFTS? By the time you read this article our swifts will be back in Yorkshire, something that fills me with excitement and joy. These amazing birds, not to be confused with swallows or martins, appear like black scythes cutting through the sky, making a high pitched screaming sound. Swifts truly deserve the adjective ‘awesome’. They eat, drink, preen, sleep and mate on the wing and, unlike swallows and martins, they never perch. They have very tiny legs and long claws, like grappling hooks, to help them cling onto the sides of their nest site. Swifts fly about 500 miles each day and sleep as high as 3,000 metres resting the left and right side of their brain alternately. Their migratory journey, between the UK and Africa and back, is 14,000 miles. After the chicks leave the nest, they can be hundreds of miles south in only 2 days. They will keep flying for 2-3 years until they are ready to mate. During their lives they fly around 2 million miles which is equivalent to more than 4 trips to the moon and back. Swifts arrive in the UK from the end of April to the beginning of May. The adults fly directly to the nest sites they used the previous year. These are in cracks and crevices under roofs and in old buildings. They are very secretive, approaching their nest at more than 40 miles an hour, coming to a stop without slowing down. Often people have no idea that they have swifts and this is why the swift is in big trouble. Householders make repairs to their roof, or replace soffits and boards, blocking up nest sites and leaving whole colonies of returning swifts homeless. New homes are built without any access for swifts at all. So what can we do? If you have heard swifts screaming around your house during the spring and summer, or you know you have swifts breeding at your home, then get some advice before doing any work on your house. You can 6 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Young swift in box

safely do the repairs you need to make once you understand the needs of the swifts and you have followed some important guidelines. If you once had swifts but they no longer breed at your house, then chances are their nest holes have been destroyed. But don’t worry, you can get them back. The amazing thing is that swifts can be attracted to nest in boxes. They don’t form new colonies very easily so you’ll need to quietly play swift love songs to attract newly maturing birds to nest. These tend to look for nest sites later in the season. I recently set up Leeds Swifts with my birding colleague Martin Calvert, to help people understand how to conserve colonies, or provide a home for this amazing species. Find us on Twitter @LeedsSwifts or on Facebook/LeedsSwifts. Here you’ll be able to see video footage of Martin’s newly established swift colony. Leeds Swifts is part of a network of swift advisory groups led in the UK by the Swift Conservation Society www.swift-conservation.org and Action for Swifts http://actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk/ Linda Jenkinson also runs birdwatching walks for beginners and people wanting to improve their skills. Still to come she is rowing 10 miles across Lake Windermere, swimming a mile in open water and will compete her 40 challenges in July with an epic four-day, 295-mile bicycle ride from Leeds to Paris.

Leeds mum, Kirsty Midgley, is halfway through completing 40 challenges, all in the name of charity. LOCAL NEWS A WARM WELCOME FROM ONE GUISELEY BASED BUSINESS (SUBURBAN MAGAZINE) TO ANOTHER - BELVOIR Belvoir have been trading for a number of years in Otley. Having outgrown their premises, they saw an opportunity to move the business to larger premises in Guiseley, in what was many years ago Parkers Fruit & Veg shop and more recently Age UK. Glenn Broadwell, a local resident himself, established Belvoir Lettings 9 years ago having started out working life as an apprentice at the former Naylor Jennings Dye Works on Green Lane, Yeadon. He went on to gain valuable experience in the property management industry for national companies and it

was the time spent away from home, that inspired Glenn to invest in this then new adventure of Belvoir. Glenn told us “We are proud to be part of the Wharfedale Valley area, investing in the local area with a shop window for customers, not just an Internet based platform”

INAPPROPRIATE VERGE PARKING

GULLEY CLEANSING IS VITAL

I get a lot of complaints about parking on pavements and grass verges. I have been in correspondence with the Council for some time to get them to put a policy in place to alleviate this practice. The most recent update I have, in précis form, is:

Many of you may have noticed the recent efforts to clean out gulleys. Gulley cleaning tankers should have been making their way across Guiseley and Rawdon, making sure the gulleys are clear and allowing water to drain away freely. They are also tasked with identifying gulleys in need of repair.

“Parking on footways is not encouraged by the Council. Where this poses specific issues for road safety we will work with the parking service, police and local communities to deter the practice and where necessary take enforcement action. This can cause great difficulty for residents and users, including the visually impaired or those with mobility difficulties, or use wheelchairs or prams.

The importance of regular gully cleansing cannot be over-stated. If gulleys become blocked then there is an increased risk of surface flooding and all the problems that result from that. One of the ways we can help prevent the kind of flooding we saw over the festive period is to ensure our gulleys are working properly and allowing surface water to drain away.

In the vast majority within the Leeds district, often but not always this takes place in residential areas where the roads are narrow and residents really struggle to park their vehicles as they try to avoid obstructing other traffic and pedestrians. It is not an offence to park on the footway, but it is to obstruct one. Everyone has their own view of this and so the police generally will only act if the obstruction physically prevents the passage of either pedestrians or vehicles. Generally in Leeds we have sought to avoid pavement parking bans by the careful management of problem parking at hot spot locations using traffic management measures and Traffic Regulation Orders. This approach can succeed because rather than moving the problem parking elsewhere it leads to better facilities for parking and thus manages the situation in the affected locality to everybody’s advantage” Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com Twitter @barryanderson19 26 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Some of the gulleys scheduled for cleaning haven’t been cleaned for three years so it’s high time they received some attention. And motorists can help ensure the process takes place as efficiently as possible. If a car is parked over a drain cover it means the Council’s machines cannot get to them to clean out the gully beneath, disrupting the cleaning schedule and increasing costs. So if motorists can bear this in mind when parking, it will help ensure the cleaning can take place on time. I will be keeping an eye on how the cleaning work progresses, and am very keen to ensure any faulty gulleys are identified and fixed as quickly as possible. It’s good news that we are seeing this investment in our area and I want to make sure we get good value for money. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley and Rawdon Ward
