JUVENILES Firstly, let me thank everyone who attended the first Leeds Birdfair on Saturday 25th June. It certainly was a day when we celebrated the wildlife and green spaces of Leeds with lots of wildlife and conservation organisations sharing their knowledge with local residents. I was very impressed by the level of knowledge shown by the children visiting my Start Birding stall. You can see a summary of the day via my Facebook page. It hardly seems like a year ago when I was telling you about what happens after the breeding season when all goes quiet in our gardens and woodlands. Once a parent bird has said goodbye to its brood, both the male and female sexual organs shrivel up and a full body moult begins. Every bit of food is channelled to making new feathers and laying down fat. This fat storage enables the bird to stay warm, if it spends the winter here, or provides the energy it needs to migrate south.
Great spotted woodpecker juvenile
general size, shape and behaviour – the essence of each species if you like. Use the text in your fieldguide to help you with this and study the commonest birds. You’ll then know when you have something different. 4.
So what stage are we at now? As I write this (28th June) the air is filled with contact calls from newly fledged birds and their parents. We’ve got lots of scruffy adults, desperately needing to moult, and oddly coloured juveniles following them around. Their vulnerability makes them take advantage of the dark, lush vegetation that the summer months provide. They become very furtive and difficult to watch in our woodlands but, our gardens can be a brilliant place to get to grips with plumage changes. It will definitely be a challenge at times, but so much fun watching young birds learning how to use our feeders. Here are some tips for watching and identifying birds in your garden at this time of year. 1.
Make sure that your bird feeders are close to shrubs and trees so that your birds will feel safe and relaxed. Remember, adult feathers are not very efficient at this time and juveniles are very inexperienced flyers. Your local sparrowhawk will have timed its own nesting to coincide with this very productive time of year.
2.
Arm yourself with a good fieldguide. Choose illustrations rather than photos (I’ll explain that in another article) and it will need to show males, females and juveniles of each species and birds in flight. Start learning about the jizz of a bird. That is the

Pick out the markings or characteristics that adults and juveniles share. Don’t focus on colour, try shape and markings. For instance, look at an adult and a juvenile blue tit or great tit in your fieldguide. You’ll see that they share the facial pattern even if the juvenile colouring is yellow where the adult is white.
The most common birdwatching faux pas for beginners at this time of year is misidentifying a juvenile great spotted woodpecker. As young birds disperse from the nest, they often turn up in gardens for the first time. Young great spotted woodpeckers are quite vocal and, as well as being black and white, show a bright red cap. The novice birdwatcher, possibly armed with a poor fieldguide, will skip past the great spotted woodpecker and stop at the first bird that shows a bright red cap. This will be a male lesser spotted woodpecker. In this case, look at the long, white patch on a great spotted woodpecker’s wing. Both adults and the juvenile share this. The lesser spotted woodpecker is about the size of a sparrow and has no such marking. It is very speckled rather than patchy. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. HOW TO RETAIN YOUR INDEPENDENCE AND RECEIVE CARE AND SUPPORT
hand 24 hours a day. Meanwhile, clients with greater care or nursing needs can access exactly what they need, when they need it.
For too long, the only way many people could access the additional care and support they needed as they grew older was to sell the family home and dip into their assets to pay for it.
The advantages of this model are many: you own your own home, thus you retain your assets; you don’t have to pay to rent; and only accessing services such as nursing, care, meals, laundry etc when required reduces the fees you would pay for full time care.
Thankfully, forward thinking providers such as Westward Care, now offer what it calls ‘independent living’ apartments with care and support at two of its locations in North Leeds - Southlands (Roundhay) and Headingley Hall (Headingley). Clients with no care needs can live completely independently in their apartment, paying only for the services they use, with the reassurance that help and support is on
GOOD TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE IS VITAL One of the big issues for our area and the whole city continues to be transport. There’s been a lack of an effective and coherent transport strategy in Leeds and we can probably all point to problems, both large and small, with road and rail. It’s time we faced these problems head on and made tangible improvements. The fact that the NGT trolley bus scheme will not go ahead actually presents us with a great opportunity. The government has still earmarked £173 million to Leeds to spend on transport and it’s now up to the Council to decide how we’re going to make the best use of it. A number of ideas have been discussed and there was a transport summit in Leeds a few weeks ago. Do we go for a major transport scheme or a series of smaller projects? How do

Peter Hodkinson, Managing Director, Westward Care highlights: “For every client that needs round the clock care and support, there are more people that want to feel secure and free from the worries of running a house. We have responded by developing a true independent alternative to care and support in later life.” For more information call – 0113 265 5876 or visit www.westwardcare.co.uk
we ensure there is strong local support (always a problem during development of NGT). We should look at improvements to both corridors, not just the A660, a rail link to the airport or a parkway train station, improve the frequency of trains at Kirkstall Forge station and Apperley Bridge, put in place schemes that reduce congestion on our roads, look at fast buses or park and ride, or improve links from the North West of the city to our hospitals. There are lots of ideas and we won’t be able to implement all of them. The point is that whatever we do needs to move forward in a coordinated fashion; it has to work towards building a transport infrastructure that is fit for Leeds in the 21st Century. I will continue to keep making the case for transport improvements in our area and across Leeds and would really like to hear from all of you about what your hopes are for the future of transport in our city. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley and Rawdon

AIREBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB 2015 – 2016 Aireborough Camera Club’s 2015 – 2016 Season has come to a close and what a year it has been. There has been an increase in our membership although we have experienced the sad loss of two of our long-standing and highly valued members. The number and quality of entries for our internal competitions has increased and so has the entry for the prestigious Yorkshire Photographic Union’s annual competition, with one of our members prints not only being selected for exhibition but also being awarded a ‘Certificate of Merit’. As well as club members presenting their own illustrated shows we have had a number
of nationally recognised photographers presenting their latest projects, including Looking for the North West Passage around Canada and the techniques involved in processing and presenting images. There was also a fascinating presentation on underwater photography. This season’s 3-day club trip was to the Lake District and it coincided with the World Water Speed Championships on Lake Coniston. The conditions were almost perfect on the lake and many records were broken and we were provided with some fantastic photographic opportunities. The club’s own Open Competition ’My Yorkshire’ was well supported with winners in all three sections Primary, Secondary and Adult. The prizes and certificates for the winners were presented at the Club’s Open Evening in September 2015. There is
still time to enter this year’s competition ‘Yorkshire Cities, Towns and Villages’, see the Club’s website for details. We must thank Rotary of Aireborough for their continued support and sponsorship as well as our new sponsors, ‘Est Display’ and ‘Blue Residential’. Our new season starts on 14th September 2016 with our Open Evening, which is free and all are welcome, and our next season’s syllabus looks even more exciting with talks, competitions, practical sessions and our trip, this year, to Northumberland. Whatever your experience with photography do come along and see us. You can see examples of our work on display in ‘Bramble Bakehouse’, Springfield Road, Guiseley until the end of July. OTLEY FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL Article provided by Jane Chidley of Otley Town Partnership
The annual Otley Food and Drink Festival will take place on Sunday 17th July, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. With FREE ENTRY this event is a must for all food lovers and everyone who enjoys a great day out. In addition to an array of stalls selling good quality, locally produced food and drink, there will also be a wide variety of Street Food. To add to the party atmosphere there will be lots of music and free children’s entertainment.
The cookery theatre, featuring demonstrations by chefs from Otley and the Farmers’ Market, will be hosted by local chef Stephanie Moon. Steph has travelled the world with her job as a chef and her
television appearances include BBC1s Chefs Put Your Menu Where Your Mouth Is and BBC2s Great British Menu.
Like most clubs and groups up and down the country, attendance during the summer months can prove to be uncertain, as members fulfill their holiday commitments and take care of their family's during the school holidays.
The Carr’s and their staff successfully manage the Red Lion in Burley-inWharfedale, and immediately offered to support us with luncheons as required and the use of their Conference and Concert Room for as long as we needed it until the choir re-convened in September.
With this in mind, The Wharfedale Male Voice Choir opted to search around for a smaller and more convenient rehearsal space within the local community - which proved to be more of a challenge than we thought, until Stuart and Sharon Carr heard of our plight and came to our rescue.
This offer was both gratefully and enthusiastically welcomed by the "summer singers" of the Wharfedale Male Voice Choir, who have really appreciated the help and hospitality openly offered to us by Stuart and Sharon as business people in the Burley community.
In the Autumn, with numbers back to normal, the choir will return to its usual venue at St. John Fisher & Thomas Moore Church on Bradford Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. on Monday afternoons, and for those who would care to join us, please contact: Terry Williams on 01943 466806 or take a look at www.WharfedaleMVC. wordpress.com. There are no auditions, but an ability to read music may help.
