AUTUMN ARRIVALS This time last year, we were feeling the nip of the approaching winter months as I wrote my October article for Suburban Magazine. What a different autumn we’ve had so far in 2016. My birdwatching classes have been held in hot sunshine and the weather direction has been mainly south westerly for the last few weeks. When this happens, our migrating birds are waiting for a change in the weather. They need the wind direction to be coming from the north to assist their migratory journey. This is true of summer and winter visitors alike. Our summer visitors need the push from the north to move southwards towards Africa and our winter visitors are waiting to leave the Arctic, Iceland, Greenland, Scandinavia and Northern Europe. As soon as the weather changes, it is possible to see birds migrating along our coasts or through inland valleys. This is called ‘visible migration’. On rare occasions, the conditions can be so perfect that thousands of birds arrive on the east coast at the same time. When such ‘falls’ of birds occur, it is possible to see ‘carpets’ of goldcrests on the ground hopping and fluttering at your feet. They drop down, exhausted after their flight across the North Sea. I was lucky enough to witness this a few years ago at Spurn Point. Thousands of thrushes including blackbird, mistle thrush, redwing and fieldfare are also waiting to arrive on the east coast. They will then disperse across the country on clear nights using the stars and the magnetic field to navigate. If you listen carefully on a cloudless night, you’ll be able to hear the characteristic ‘tseep’ sound that redwings make as they fly overhead. It won’t be long before you’ll be able to see them in parks and gardens around Leeds. As usual, we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for the arrival of waxwings. It’s been a while 6 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

since we had some good sized flocks in the UK. These beautiful birds leave Scandinavia when food becomes scarce and Leeds city centre is a great place to see them. Check out my Facebook page for news about waxwing flocks over the coming months and keep an eye on the weather forecast for some northerly weather. You may be able to attract some autumn arrivals into your own garden. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. MAKING PROGRESS ON 20MPH ZONES The Council is continuing to roll out 20mph zones on residential streets across Leeds. A lot of people tend to think that these are a good idea – reducing vehicle speeds means less chance of an accident and contributes to making our streets safer overall. A few details about the progress in implementing these zones. You’ll probably notice that streets around schools, if not already 20mph, are the first to benefit from new schemes. Whenever

schools are expanded, part of the regulation around the expansion normally includes an order for a 20mph zone. Also, streets in the vicinity of schools tend to be prioritised for action according to the number of accidents recorded, with the streets experiencing the highest rates receiving attention and investment first, and so on. A lot of streets have very similar accident rates, and so deciding on an order of priority is a little more tricky. And making the case for that funding, in the context of all the other highways priorities, is also more difficult.
that Tranmere Park is getting a 20mph zone, has been welcomed, particularly given the close proximity of two local primary schools. There are more streets in the ward that could benefit, and I will keep making the case for these to receive attention as much as resources allow.

Compost bins are a must have this month,
In your vegetable area, over wintering onion sets and garlic will be ready for planting, together with sowing seeds for spring cabbage. Summer raspberry canes which have fruited, should be cut down to ground level, and the new canes tied to the frame. Then cut down to ground level autumn raspberry canes after fruiting, together with fruited blackberry stems. If your strawberry plants are more than four years old, dig them out and replace with new plants or your own runners after improving the bed.

After the first frosts have blackened your dahlia stems, cut them down to about 6”, and after lifting, stand them upside down in a shed or greenhouse for about 10 days to dry the stems. Then sit them upright in boxes, surrounded by damp soil to keep them safe for the winter. Similarly, chrysanthemum stools should be cut back, lifted and stored in a cool place for next year.
to collect all the falling leaves, together with the finished leaves and stems from your flowers and vegetable bed. Make sure you mix in some newspaper or thin cardboard, together with a proprietary starting powder for faster working.

This is the month of autumn mists and mellow fruitfulness, and is also a good time to look at how the garden has performed. Have some of the plants outgrown their space, are there areas of bare earth. Lift and divide large clumps of plants, replanting the outside sections, and disposing of the woody centres. Then thinking of autumn colour, or possibly all year round, take a look at your local nursery and buy yourself some future happiness.

LIONS YET TO ROAR Article by Nicholas Sharpe
Guiseley are still awaiting their first win of the season (at the time of writing) 13 matches into their second campaign in the fifth tier of English football. Following a promising pre-season, the Lions lost five games on the bounce at the start of the season which spelled the end for the enormously successful tenure of boss Mark Bower and his assistant Danny Boshell. Adam Lockwood was placed in temporary charge with a slight upturn in fortunes (three draws and three losses) and did enough to earn himself the full-time post; with former Doncaster Rovers manager Dave Penney joining him as assistant. Club Chairman Phil Rogerson described the double appointment as a ‘dream-ticket’ – a statement all Lions fans will be hoping comes to fruition if they are to stand any chance of avoiding relegation back to the National League North. The playing staff at the club has been altered quite dramatically since the end of last season, with only eight remaining who played a key role in narrowly avoiding the drop in April. The latest acquisitions include right back Connor Brown who, at the age of 24, has over 100 Football League appearances

and goalkeeper Jonny Maxted who’s uncle Paul donned the Guiseley jersey in the historic FA Vase triumph of 1991. With no transfer windows in the division this season, clubs are able to alter their squads if and when they feel like it and Guiseley have been at the forefront of the National League’s transfer activity thus far. They say ‘when it rains, it pours’. Well, that phrase could certainly describe the Lions’ luck in the FA Cup draw Fourth Qualifying Round draw. They have been drawn away to Lincoln City who are the highest ranked team involved
at this stage of the competition. The tie will take place at Sincil Bank on the 15th October. In form Vixens While the First Team may be struggling at the foot of the table, the opposite can be said about the Ladies’ team who are flying in their division. Just six games in and they already sit four points clear at the top of the table after collecting 5 wins and a draw; including a 7-0 drubbing of Morecambe Ladies at Nethermoor Park. Entry into home games is just £3 and £1 for concessions, with free admission offered to all Guiseley AFC season ticket holders.

to the life of the town and to promote civic pride. The role of Mayor is distinct from that of Councillor and the Mayor acts in a non-political manner when carrying out their civic role. The Mayor must ensure that business can be carried out efficiently, with regard to the rights of Councillors and in the interests of the community. “Yorkshire’s Forgotten Dale”. Despite some very inclement weather during the course of the evening, the church was packed and the varied programme of flower themed songs, that was put together by Choir Director Alistair Wood over the course of two hours, with a break for refreshments, was deemed a huge success by singers and audience alike. The evening was filled with a series of enjoyable themed songs, madrigals and piano music that reflected the flower filled church, with audience participation during the final song “Edelweiss”
The Wharfedale Male Voice Choir Tenors and Basses were delighted to have received this invitation from Alistair, as it enabled them to offer a supportive gesture to him in return for his work with the WMVC over the “Staying in Tune” rehearsals this summer at the Red Lion in Burley in Wharfedale.
