WHY BIRDS SUNBATHE While the UK has been bathed in sunshine, you may have noticed that our birds have also been taking advantage of the hot sunny weather. In my garden, I’ve seen collared doves, dunnocks, blackbirds and robins, lying down and spreading their wings across the ground. Elsewhere, I’ve seen herons arching their wings around the front of their body as if adopting a strange ritualistic posture. This behaviour is called ‘sunning’. So why do birds do this and how does it help them? Sunshine is as important to a bird’s health and wellbeing as it is to us. We need sunshine to manufacture Vitamin D and so do birds. Birds differ from us in that they ingest Vitamin D while preening. If you see a bird bend round to touch the base of its tail with its beak, it is taking oil from its preen gland (or uropygial gland). Birds use this oil to anoint individual feathers while preening. The sun converts components of the oil to Vitamin D and the bird ingests this as it continues to preen its feathers. The ‘sunning’ behaviour facilitates the process and also serves another purpose. Birds need to renew their feathers after the breeding season as they become worn and damaged. One of the causes of this wear and tear is the effect of feather mites. All birds have feather mites, but at certain times of the year, the population of feather mites on individual birds increases. This little mite (measuring less than 0.5mm) feeds on the protein

responsible for the structure of feathers. Mites are susceptible to UV light and a bird can control the population by exposing them to the sun. So, if you see one of your garden birds lying on the ground and spreading its wings, please do not disturb it. Just enjoy the spectacle and the knowledge that you both share a love for the sun and how beneficial it is to the wellbeing of birds and humans alike. OFSTED CAN HELP PARENTS IN LEEDS CHOOSE THEIR CHILDCARE By Nick Hudson, Ofsted Regional Director for North East, Yorkshire and Humber
Choosing childcare that will work for you, perhaps just a year after the birth of your baby, may seem like a daunting task. After all, the language of childcare isn’t necessarily clear. Terms like ‘childcare on non-domestic premises’, ‘childminder agencies’ and ‘children's centres’ are not always easy to understand, as HM Chief Inspector Sir Michael Wilshaw highlighted in a speech about the early years in April 2014, when he said that how we talk about early education and the information available to parents is confusing. This is where Ofsted can help. There are many different types of early years settings, but what we are fundamentally concerned about is their quality. Early years settings should be places where children are safe, and where they can learn and flourish in a stimulating environment. Our inspection reports can help parents make informed decisions about where their young child will be cared for. You can go to Ofsted’s inspection report website and look for early years settings close to your home. You can read about each setting in detail and

decide whether or not it’s right for you and your child. The good news is that early years quality has never been higher. The latest statistics show that 86% of nurseries and other types of early years settings were judged good or outstanding at their most recent inspection. What do we mean by good and outstanding? To be clear, good is a high standard. A good nursery is one in which teaching is consistently strong or improving steadily. While an outstanding preschool has highly effective or rapidly improving teaching; and its leaders and managers actively seek, evaluate and act on the views of parents, staff and children in order to drive continual improvement. In Leeds, there are 1,120 providers on the early years register. Quality in the city is in fact very slightly higher than in England, and indeed that’s true for Yorkshire and Humber as a whole. In Leeds, 87% of early years providers were judged to be good or better at their most recent inspection, as of the end of March this year.
We recently published a survey of early education, which found thousands of examples of early years settings that are providing rich experiences for poorer children. But choosing a childcare provider doesn’t begin and end with Ofsted. Rather, I’d suggest that as well as reading Ofsted’s inspection reports of early years settings in their area, parents should actually go and visit those local settings and talk to the providers face-to-face. Only then can you be absolutely sure you have made best choice for you and your child.

TWENTY YEARS OF FUTURES Barnardo’s is celebrating twenty years of Futures - the supported lodgings service. The service opened in 1996 to provide homes for care leavers aged 16-21 in Leeds. Volunteers, young people and staff got together in July at Meanwood Valley Farm to celebrate the anniversary with food and party games and also to celebrate 150 years of Barnardo’s, which was founded by Thomas Barnardo in 1866. Futures provides supported lodgings to vulnerable young people aged 16-21 (not just care leavers) who are in need of support and who are not yet ready to live fully independently and who are often referred through social care. Their needs are carefully matched with the skills of supported lodgings providers that the service recruits, trains and supports - ordinary people who are able to offer accommodation within their own homes. Service Manager Vicky Dobie said: “We are so proud that we have been able to work with young people and supported lodgings providers for so long – the difference it makes to young people is huge. The supported lodgings scheme is not just about
finding young people a roof over their head, it’s about providing a family home environment where young people can flourish - with the guidance and supportive extra care that goes with it. “Supported lodging providers are from different backgrounds - some are single, others married, some with children, others not - but they all have one thing in common, they have a spare bedroom to offer a young person leaving care and compassion to help turn around a teenager’s life and support them to develop the skills they will need to live in a less supported environment.” Nina Snell, from Middleton in Leeds, has been a supported lodgings provider for eight years. “ I began with Nightstop which provides emergency lodgings in the short term, then I started having young people stay long term and in total I’ve had 30. My son, who was young when I started doing this, is very comfortable with the young people staying.”
“I would always advocate being a supported lodgings provider – it’s done a lot of people the world of good. Barnardo’s are very supportive, the team encourage you, and they always make you feel you are doing something worthwhile and you are always able to talk to them.” Netty Aubrey-Symonds from Leeds has been working with Futures providing supported lodgings for six years. “When I was a young person I had some problems” she says “and I had to learn the hard way about life, but people supported and helped me and through their kindness I became the woman I am. As I got older I wanted to give back – I had a room spare and I wanted to help someone who needed help. “I heard about Barnardo’s and Futures and it was everything I’d hoped for. These young people are just like everyone but something has happened in their lives and they need someone to say ‘you can do this’ and help give them the confidence to try and reach their goals.” If you are interested in becoming a supported lodgings provider please contact the service on 0113 239 5560.
