WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 21 of Suburban Magazine. We have had a good response to the request for details of local community events over the Christmas period and have included as many as possible in this month’s edition. This was (possibly), the first morning of this winter that saw many of us having to scrape the ice from our car windows. With this colder weather in mind we have, in this month’s edition, some tips on keeping warm over winter – for both people and pets. Thank you as always to our valued advertisers and to readers who have sent in articles and news of local interest. Please forward editorial ideas to editorial@suburbanleeds.co.uk

Last year’s Christmas Art Contest Winner you would like to promote your business alongside these articles, then please get in touch with our sales team today who will be happy to assist you. We are now working on edition 22 which will deadline 25/11/16

CLLR PAUL WADSWORTH By the time you read this you may have seen the bus service changes affecting Aireborough. The changes include the loss of the 947 between Yeadon, Greengates and Bradford; a revised timetable for the 747 which runs between Bradford, Greengates, Yeadon and the Airport, and the 966 running between Guiseley, Yeadon and Westfield will have journeys after 17:00 withdrawn. These bus services provide vital links for residents in Aireborough, so it is

disappointing to see them change to reduced hours or withdrawn altogether. I did raise concerns with the Combined Authority and they tell me that the number of passengers using the services was low. Whilst I appreciate that they have to think carefully about whether they can afford to support such under-performing routes, I still think more could be done to boost patronage, rather than losing the services altogether. A more accessible bus stop here, a slightly extended or reshaped route there, and a bus service can suddenly become a lot more attractive to potential passengers. I will continue to push for them to look at ways that vital services can

be retained if at all possible. Moving to some good news on funding that we agreed through the Outer North West Community Committee in recent months. The Committee approved over £4,000 for festive lights in Guiseley and Rawdon, around £3,000 to improve disability access at Leeds Sailing Centre, and over £9,000 for some Speed Indication Devices to help encourage drivers to reduce speeds in Guiseley and Rawdon. I’m glad that we could agree to support these initiatives that will benefit people in our area. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley and Rawdon Ward

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

With the soil still slightly warm, it is an ideal time to plant new bare root shrubs, fruit bushes and roses – as they will be able to establish themselves before any extremes of weather. This timing also applies to tulips and hyacinths, which if planted now will escape any diseases which occur earlier in the year.

Once the leaves have dropped from your fruit bushes, it is easier to see the shape and where to start pruning. Start by opening up the Dalesway_Advert_29.2.16.pdf 29/02/2016 centre, then cutting out any dead or 1diseased wood, together with any crossing branches.

It is good to take hard wood cuttings of roses, shrubs and hedges, to increase your stock, and also to pass on to friends and family. Dogwoods, buddleia, forsythia, hydrangea and many others are ideal for this technique. Start with long straight stems, which have lost their leaves – 12 inches or longer. Then make a clean straight cut at the bottom, just below a leaf joint – followed by a second cut 8 inches higher, just above a leaf scar. Make a slit trench for the cuttings, inserting them with just about 1” sticking out and 6” apart. Then firm them in, and leave them until they are strong and healthy next year – ready for potting up and growing on.

RE

Then finish off your winter digging, adding any organic matter that is available. Next job is to use your hoe among your beds and borders, to remove both perennial and annual weeds – to ensure there are now seeds which could germinate next year.

Apples and pears may also be pruned when dormant, check the variety and pruning instructions at your local library or online.

U

This month is traditionally cold, wet and windy, which means it is a good time to winterise your garden. So take a look around all the garden, to check for anything that is likely to be at risk from cold, wind or water logging. Then take the appropriate action, lifting, mulching or adding additional drainage as required.
