A WOODLAND TOUR Thanks to the development of the new Kirkstall railway station, it’s now possible to take a lovely tour of the woodlands around Bramley, Hawksworth and Newlay. The whole area is reminiscent of a John Atkinson Grimshaw painting with its stone walls and densely tangled undergrowth. My starting point is Bramley Falls Wood on Leeds and Bradford Road. On a fine day in January, some of our resident birds, including great tit, wren and dunnock, will be singing. Heading straight down to the Forge Locks, look and listen for great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper and look for grey wagtail on the canal overflow. Cross the Leeds and Liverpool canal and turn left. Here the River Aire bends sharply towards the canal and the river bend provides a great spot to look for kingfisher, dipper and goosander. The new Kirkstall station approach takes us through a previously inaccessible part of the woodland which provides some low cover for wrens, goldcrest, dunnock and, from the early spring, blackcap and garden warbler. The new Kirkstall Forge development is in its early stages and already has an exciting vibe. By this Autumn it will be a small village with public transport nestled between protected woodland. The development also provides a new view of the River Aire to watch for dipper, kingfisher and otter. Walk up the hill and reach the main A65. Take the new pedestrian crossing to Hawksworth Woods. Take the main lower path through the woodland periodically checking Oil Mill Beck for dipper, grey wagtail and kingfisher. Mistle thrush and song thrush will be singing on warmer winter days and great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper can be seen from these woods. At the end of Butcher Hill, cross Hawksworth Road and take the steep path into Little Hawksworth Wood. Turn sharp left and down the hill taking the path that runs parallel to Hawksworth Road. This wood isn’t as disturbed by dog walkers and woodcock can be found here in winter. As the woodland ends, look for greenfinch and goldfinch on garden feeders on Outwood Lane. Check the open sky for soaring red kite and sparrowhawk. Back at the A65, cross over and turn left onto Rein Road. This densely wooded path takes us back

A Dipper in the River Aire
down to the River Aire then bends down to Newlay. Look for dipper, heron, mallard, goosander and kingfisher on the river. Grey wagtails often show on the goit that runs parallel to the bottom of Rein Road. Walk past the houses and take a left turn onto the iron footbridge that links Newlay Lane and Pollard Lane. Climb the hill on Pollard Lane, pass the Abbey Inn and take the path on the left signposted for the canal walk. Look for bullfinch, robin, dunnock, long-tailed tit, great tit, goldcrest and blue tit and check the open sky again for birds of prey. The hedgerows are good for whitethroat in spring and willow warbler, chiffchaff and garden warbler will be singing from Hunters Green. At the canal, turn left and follow the path to the Lock. Here we cross the canal into Bramley Falls Wood again and follow the old railway track to the left. This is a great place to see jay and treecreeper. At the first signpost to the car park, check the trees around the rocky area for treecreeper and nuthatch before climbing the steps into the parkland. Here you may be able to find stock dove, mistle thrush, redwing and fieldfare. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. WHEN LIZ MET PHIL… When Lurchers Liz and Phil arrived at Dogs Trust Leeds, nobody could have predicted the love affair that would follow. Both dogs had been found separately wandering the streets and given their condition, the team suspect they had been without a home for some time. Although they had had a tough time and were both in need of some TLC, from the moment they set eyes on each other they became the best of friends, just like their royal namesakes. But Liz’s furry-tail ending has come sooner than Phil’s as Liz
Phil with Canine Carer Suzie Douglas
has headed off to her forever home. Now the team are hoping Phil’s special someone will walk through the doors of the Rehoming Centre soon so he can follow in her paw-prints. Amanda Sands, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Leeds, says: “This has never happened before, that two dogs that arrived as strays became best buddies from the moment they met. Phil in particular was in quite a bad condition and really lacked confidence, but as soon
as he met Liz he became a different dog which was lovely! “When we saw they got on so well, we put them together in a kennel so they could keep each other company and then someone came along and offered Liz her forever home which was fantastic, but Phil is still waiting.” Although Phil’s canine companion has headed home, he has continued to come on in leaps and bounds and made lots of new doggie friends, so the team would love to find him a forever home where another dog is already part of the family. Amanda says: “He is a lovely, gentle boy and we’re really hoping that we can find some Lurcher fans out there who fall in love with him so that he too can have the long and happy life he deserves at the heart of a forever home.” If you think you could offer Phil his ideal home, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. 50 DAY CHALLENGE Help mark Heart Research UK’s 50th anniversary this year and join them in taking up a 50 Day Challenge. They are calling for willing members of the public to either Give Up or Take Up something for 50 days. Ideally, Heart Research UK want you to give up something unhealthy, or take up something healthy, for the duration of the challenge. 50 days may seem like a long time, but that's why they are doing
it - after all, it wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy. How about giving up chocolate, alcohol, takeaways or smoking? Or on the other side of the coin, why not take up running, swimming or cycling. Here’s the good news, and why we feel it’s worth celebrating being fabulous at 50: •
In the last 50 years, the annual number of UK deaths from CVD has more than halved
•
•
50 years ago, more than 70% of heart attacks in the UK ended in death. Now at least 70% of people survive In the 1960s, 80% of babies born in the UK with a heart defect did not survive to their first birthday and today around 80% survive into adulthood

ISABELLE’S ACHIEVEMENT IS TREE-MENDOUS! A county wide drawing competition attracting over 500 entries has been won by a Yeadon school girl. 11 year old Isabelle Whitaker, a year 6 pupil at Yeadon Westfield Junior School, triumphed in the ‘Draw your dream tree house’ competition organised by estate agent Manning Stainton as part of its Community Support Programme and which was open to schools across West and North Yorkshire. Isabelle’s winning entry featured a tree house at the top of a large apple tree, complete with full length slide into a swimming pool and colourful balloons fluttering from the chimney pot. It also included the well-known Manning Stainton sold board! The first prize was an iPad Air, while the school received a cheque for £500. The money will be added to funds currently being raised to convert the former caretaker’s bungalow into an additional teaching space. The school’s Head Teacher, Lisa Piotrowicz, says: ‘We 14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Draw Your Dream Tree House Competition Winner, Isabelle Whitaker
are all incredibly proud of Isabelle who, like every one of our wonderful pupils, has an extremely fertile imagination. ‘Her success means we are also now a step closer to achieving our fund raising target and the creation of an exciting new facility for the benefit of the whole school.’ Clare Frieze, Manager of Manning Stainton’s Guiseley branch says: ‘The quality of entries has been
unbelievably high so for Isabelle to be named the overall winner is some achievement. It was a real honour to visit the school and present the prizes.’ The Guiseley branch of Manning Stainton is open 7 days a week and the team is ready to take customer calls from 8am – 8pm every day. FIRST MEETING TO GET TO BOTTOM OF BUS PROBLEMS Buses are a key way of getting around the city, but a common complaint concerns their reliability. Anyone who uses them even semi-regularly is likely to have stories they can reel off about times they’ve been let down by a late or missed bus.
common issues. We’ll also be making sure to keep up the pressure by raising the matter at future council meetings, and potentially organising a public meeting at some point so that people can express their views. It’s the start of a dialogue that I hope will ultimately help lead to a better service for Leeds residents, which is what everyone wants. Councillor Paul Wadsworth Guiseley and Rawdon Ward
I know from speaking to people who use First routes across the city that these problems are widespread. To try to get to the bottom of these issues, two colleagues and I recently met with First senior management. We discussed the different kinds of problems that occur, and the causes of those problems, from bus breakdowns, driver reliability, and service/timetable issues. The positive thing from my point of view was that First did acknowledge there was a problem. Vehicle reliability seems to have improved quite a bit, as the age of the fleet has reduced, but there is still work to do in other areas. Overall it was a constructive and worthwhile meeting, but it’s just the beginning of a series of planned meetings. In the coming months we are hoping to visit the depot and the control room to understand more about what happens when things go wrong, and what measures might be put in place to resolve some of the

SUBURBAN GARDENS
SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
Welcome to the mad weather world of 2017, with mild days, hard frosts, rain and snow. It is important to maintain good weed control during these mild days, although be careful of hoeing too deeply, especially if you have lots of spring bulbs not showing above the surface. It is too easy to slice the tops of them, and ruin your colourful display. February is a good month for checking your soil, when it is not frozen, as this will allow you to take any necessary action to improve the structure before the growing season starts. Clay soils need organic matter and grit digging in, while sandy soils need manure, compost of leaf mould. If you want to grow something specific like camellias or rhododendrons etc, soil testing kits are relatively inexpensive and will come with complete instructions if you need to make any changes. It is easy to grow potatoes in bags, pots or in the ground and they are appearing for sale in all the usual outlets. All potatoes need chitting (sprouting) before planting, and this is the month to stand them up in egg trays, or similar, the sprouting end upwards in a frost-free environment.

Seed sowing and planting starts this month, if you have
somewhere warm to start everything growing. Shallots and garlic should be planted outside, in the area you want to grow them. Sweet peas, together with hardy annuals and perennials may be started, although they will need hardening off later before being planted out.

Fruit bushes and trees will soon be waking up, so if you have finished your winter pruning, now is the time to give them a good feed. They will benefit from a high potash fertiliser, alternatively, fish blood and bone or seaweed meal to get them off to a good start. Water your choice ingredient in around the plant, and provide a mulch if you have any compost available.

LOCAL NEWS TRINITY FOODBANK CENTRE (TRINITY FBC) A new emergency food distribution centre is opening in Rawdon… For the past year or so, we have been using a new logo and strap-line at Trinity Church: Sharing God’s Love! As we move into a New Year and make new commitments, identify projects and attempt to realise our dreams, what better mission could there be than to help the needy of our own community? For we believe that even in the apparently affluent area in which we live, there are those who, often through little fault of their own, get into difficulty and enter a downward spiral, a vortex from which there seems to be little or no way of escape. Yet there is hope! Trinity Foodbank Centre will open its doors on Monday 16th January and help will be available in the form of emergency food parcels each Monday after that from 11.00am-1.30pm. Our willing team of volunteers will help those who come
to see us identify their own paths towards a better future, through signposting them to the many organisations which already exist with this purpose as their prime objective. Trinity FBC will operate as a satellite of Bradford North Foodbank, even though Trinity FBC’s main area of service will be the LS19 postcode area. The logistics and geography are such that it makes perfect sense to do it this way. Bradford North Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust, whose aim is to end food poverty in the UK. That is some challenge! Working with Bradford North Foodbank, under the aegis of the Trussell Trust, means that

we follow strict guidelines in all aspects of our operation. If the response we have received from prospective volunteers is anything to go by, there is a massive will amongst our local community to help others: we trained 17 people on Monday 9th January and at least twice as many more have expressed interest in doing the same. Well done Rawdon! We are on a mission and our mission is nothing more and nothing less than to share God’s love! Bring it on! Article by Pete Lambert

ALL CHANGE IN 2017 AT THE WHARFEDALE MALE VOICE CHOIR At the Wharfedale Male Voice’s Choir’s end of season concert their chairman Mr. Terry Williams made a presentation to the choir’s retiring Musical Director Mrs. Blanche Woollin. Blanche enjoys a long and well respected reputation in the world of music throughout the Wharfedale area, and during the last four years has given sterling service to the choir but she and her husband Gerald are now planning to take a well-earned break, and amongst other things, will be taking to the high seas on a series of cruises around the world. Joining the chairman and
the choir is Mr. Paul Hurst, with an equally strong background and track record, who has been appointed as the new Musical Director with effect from the start of 2017. Choir members took this occasion to see Blanche off in grand style and at the same time offer a warm welcome to Paul in his new role in support of their choir that has been entertaining community

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Guiseley, Otley, Menston, Yeadon, Rawdon and Apperley Bridge areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little
bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
