BUYING LOCAL STILL MAKING SENSE The country wide campaign to buy locally has recently had its detractors. Some argue that transportation costs are often a tiny fraction of the cost of the product and that money spent is often better and more effectively received overseas than it might be at home. Then there are questions about quality, suitability and cost. Do we really care whether the tyres most suited to our bicycle, motorbike or car (and budget) are made by Avon, Goodyear, Metzler, Michelin or Pirelli - or whoever and wherever? They have a point.
There are nonetheless real community benefits in shopping for local goods and services. It puts more money in the local economy, and what goes around comes around. Local enterprises are safeguarded and continue to pay local taxes. You know the person you are dealing with – perhaps your families have been trading for years. And, in the case of local produce, there is greater confidence that the products are truly seasonal and fresh. One local enterprise which recently celebrated its first birthday is Farsley Farmers’ Market, held in and around St John’s Church Hall on the fourth Saturday of every month (apart from

winter). Outdoors there is a wide range of local produce from local producers. The indoor element includes craft, second hand books and catering. In Farsley, it’s not just a case of traders displaying “Buy Local” stickers in their windows or on their vans and then doing little else to stimulate trade. Five years ago Councillor Andrew Carter set up and currently chairs Farsley Business Forum. The group meets bi-monthly and regularly has attendances of around 25 representatives from local businesses. Their remit is to stimulate and help business in Farsley Town Street and to encourage local shopping and trading. Among their involvement in numerous community events, they run events at Easter and in October and support Farsley Christmas Lights and Farsley Festival. Last year FBF launched the Aston Martin Festival, commemorating the village’s connections with the brand (founder David Brown had a factory on Newlands, Farsley). The event is to be repeated on 5 September. The Sunny Bank Mills complex is an important business, social and community hub for Farsley and beyond. The eleven acres site includes over 3000 square feet of light and airy space dedicated to the arts, particularly local ones. Open Tuesday8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 11-3, gallery displays include ceramics, textiles, fashion, fine Art, videos, furniture, illustration, photography, sculpture, surface patterns, audio and more. The exhibition currently closing is a range of media, concept and craft by local college students. It is to be replaced from 25 April with Impression: Making a Mark. It is the gallery’s second printmaking exhibition and features nine local artists’ works in media including lino cuts, screen prints, colographs and monoprints. Among the nine showing are Des Pattison of Greengates. As if the opening won’t be busy enough already, there is also a ceramics workshop on the same day. Further information about all these and more can be found easily via Facebook and Twitter.
Heather Duffy and James Guerin are studying Events Management at Leeds Metropolitan University. As part of their course, students work in partnership with local charities and community groups and help organize and run fundraising events. Here they were at Farsley Farmers’ Market promoting a jazz and art evening at St John’s from 6pm on Thursday 30 April.
Farsley’s village community spirit was exemplified by the closure of Town Street to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

MORE POST OFFICES GOING 7/7 If you live in or around Calverley, Horsforth, Kirkstall, Meanwood or Stanningley then there is a good chance that you will be aware of the new wave of post offices opening 7/7 and from 9am to 7pm – usually combined with a convenience store and/or newsagent, though sometimes with the post office counter closed for lunch. If you don’t live in those areas then you may be in for a pleasant surprise when one opens near you. One community in for such a treat is Cookridge. Their current post office is due to be relocated to Cookridge News on Otley Old Road and offer the new extended opening times. When Suburban spoke with manager Kishen Parmar in March, a timescale of 4-8 weeks was anticipated.
SPRING MUSIC AT LOTHERTON HALL Lotherton’s spring season brings two Sunday afternoon drawing-room concerts. There will be a piano recital on 26 April, featuring music by JS Bach, Haydn and Schumann. On Sunday 31 May, Andrew Passmore, harpsichord and Ian Hoggart, recorder, 10 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Cookridge News is due to become one of the latest wave of 7/7 post offices. Sanita Parmar and husband Kishen are to take on the new responsibilities alongside their existing newsagent and convenience store. The branch it is due to replace opens only part-time at present. If you didn’t already know about these then you can search online. You might find one closer to you.
Although the new style post offices can’t all offer the full range of Post Office Ltd products and services, they do offer postal ones – a blessing if you haven’t been able to make it for 5.30 or if you want to avoid the Monday queues.
The new post office at Cookridge is part of Post Office Ltd’s second wave of the rebranding and regeneration of local services. Their website has a post office location tab which is kept fully up to date and identifies the nearest by postcode entry.

Events begin at 2pm and tickets (£12.50, £11 concessions, £20 family) include entry to the hall, tea and cakes and free parking if pre-booked. Booking is strongly recommended.

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very said for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Calverley, Rodley, Stanningley, Farsley, Pudsey, Bramley and New Farnley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to
show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GOOD BYE TO YO-YO DIETING FOREVER! After years of yo-yo dieting and hiding in photos on nights out with friends Kim Smith from Idle, Bradford, discovered the secret to healthy, fulfilling and sustainable weight loss. Over the past 10 years Kim’s weight had fluctuated from 10 stone 6lbs to 14 stone, after following various diet plans but always putting what she’d lost back on the more though the inevitable difficulty of keeping up with the strict and restrictive diets in the long term. Kim had tried everything from low carb plans, diet shakes, calorie counting and other slimming groups. Even though the plans had some effect following the initial weight loss it always crept back on. The last straw came after seeing the photos from a girls holiday to Turkey in April 2014 and a family holiday in Spain in July 2014 and both times she had lost weight before the holidays by following strict diets and losing weight before both the holidays then again putting back on more then she’d lost and more whilst away. After returning from the second holiday Kim was at a low and after spending time looking into various diet pills she decided it was time for a life style change rather than another crash diet. Kim was inspired to join Slimming World following comments from friends who were raving about the plan and who had lost large amounts of weight whist eating amazing meals and never feeling hungry. In August 2014 Kim along with her mum walked through the doors of the group in Idle. From the word go Kim felt supported by the group and inspired by other members weight loss. The group sessions were fun and the positivity from the group leader and other members was amazing. For the first time in her life Kim discovered that through food optimising she was never hungry and could create healthy versions of all her favourite meals at home, meals which are normally 12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
banned when trying to lose weight including curry, burger and chips, lasagne with garlic bread, chilli and full English breakfasts. Over a period of 6 months Kim lost 2 stone 2.5lbs reaching her personal achievement target weight and dropping 2 dress sizes in the process. Kim has learnt how small changes in lifestyle such as healthy cooking can have a massive impact without having to increase exercise and was still able to enjoy going out with friends and have a drink and eating out. Losing the weight has helped Kim to get her regain sparkle and confidence which she had lost and she no longer feels like she has to hide in photos when out with friends. Through the journey Kim has been inspired by how easy healthy eating is and the support from the group helped to inspire her giving her lots of ideas through the weight loss journey. Kim has now decided to take on her own Slimming World group in the Pudsey area to help other people reach their dreams and change their lives. Kim’s group will be taking place every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm at St James the Great, Galloway Lane, Pudsey, Leeds, LS28 8JR for more information please contact her on 07766 324568.

YORKSHIRE MEETS THE FRENCHIES - AGAIN Last year’s ecstatic reception of Le Grand Départ left no one in any doubt as to Yorkshire’s enthusiasm for France and things French. Another reminder came on 21 March at an event at Trinity Arts in Leeds. Organised by former journalist Mireille Béguin, Meet the Frenchies brought together a selection of linguists, restaurateurs, musicians, charitable organisations and others promoting activities throughout the county. The public response was impressive with over 250 people arriving to browse the stands, taste the goodies on offer and share their own experiences. Mireille Béguin also masterminded the rally for Charlie Hebdo in January and there was a serious kernel to the proceedings, with a lively debate on French values and freedom of expression. BUYING LOCAL Buying local, fresh and seasonal has been made so much easier since the introduction of farmers’ markets. There are now monthly markets in Oakwood, Headingly, Kirkstall, Horsforth, Bramhope, Guiseley, Farsley and Otley – spread over the month so that even last Sundays are covered (Otley).
in March didn’t have to walk far to get the choice of a wide range of local beers; it was the second day of the town’s 7th Beer and Cider Festival in St Margaret’s Church Hall, starting with 69 beers and 26 still ciders there for the tasting. Lost Dog IPA was the hyper-local beer, offered by Horsforth Brewery, which took second prize at the event.

The fact that they had run out by noon demonstrates the popularity of their bread - and Horsforth Farmers’ Market. Zig (Simon Garrad, pictured) told Suburban that the bakery had recently started using organic Yorkshire wheat ground at a Yorkshire mill – taking the cachet of buying local to the next level.

SUBURBAN GARDENS
With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
Spring is starting to awaken our plants and shrubs, with new leaves and shoots appearing everywhere. Take care with anything tender, as frosts and snow may still come our way. This is a good time to spring clean beds and borders, keeping on top of weeding and hoeing. Then when everything is ready, finish pruning all your roses – and give them a good dose of rose fertilizer. In a similar fashion, feed your beds and borders with Growmore or fish, blood and bone to give them a good start for the season. Permanently planted pots should have the top two inches of soil removed, and replenished with the correct type of compost and additional long lasting feed. If you have perennial plants which are too large and need dividing, do it as soon as the young shoots show – keeping the outside young pieces and disposing of the old centres. Now the grass is starting to grow, scarify (rake) all the old thatch out of your lawns. This is followed by aeration, which involves inserting a fork into the grass to a depth of 4”, and wiggling slightly to create a drainage path. If the soil is poor, you may sweep fine soil or compost into the 18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
holes to improve it. After this, apply a spring fertilizer, using a product with weed and moss killer if these are a problem. Finally over sow any bare patches with grass seed, using one containing rye grass if it receives heavy wear. Start sowing your veg seed is small quantities every two weeks, to avoid a glut. Spring cabbage, broad beans, brussell sprouts. If you do not have space in the garden, use florists
buckets or large pots to enjoy fresh vegetables in season. Established fruit trees should be given a dressing of potash, which will boost their flowering and fruiting potential.

CONSILIA LEGAL: PRE-NUP ASSUMPTION For anyone driving a car in England there’s a legal requirement to take out car insurance. When buying a house a lender will often want a guarantee that the home owner has building insurance. For many of us, we may also have life and/or critical illness insurance, pet insurance even mobile phone insurance. So why don’t more of us insure against our marriage by way of a pre-nuptial agreement? There’s an assumption that pre-nuptial agreements are only for celebrities and the wealthiest of individuals. However, if you’re getting married and you answer YES to any of the following questions you yourself should be thinking about a pre-nuptial agreement. Do you own your own house? Have a pension? Have you inherited some money or are you likely to do so? Do you have children? Is this your second marriage? The list is endless. The purpose of a pre-nuptial agreement in a
Advertorial
nutshell is to provide you with some form of asset protection in the unfortunate event that your marriage comes to an end. Whilst bringing up the matter of a pre-nuptial agreement is not a romantic prospect, in other countries a declaration of pre-marital assets is compulsory. Unfortunately, whilst none of us choose to marry with the intention of separating we cannot predict what the future will hold and just as we cannot predict our life expectancy we cannot predict the length of our marriage. A pre-nuptial agreement does not, as the law currently stands, prevent a person from trying to make a claim over their spouse’s protected assets on divorce. Nevertheless, the Courts do recognise that a properly executed prenuptial agreement, satisfying certain qualifying criteria, carries significant weight on divorce. If you are getting married, or if you are already married and need a post-nuptial agreement, please contact our specialist solicitors Laura Clapton and Sally Clark on 0113 357 1315 or enquiries@consilialegal.co.uk

OLLY THE OWL
frightened them away, it must also have terrified Olly. He was struggling and pecking at my hands. His eyes were wide and his chest was heaving. It was the first time he had ever shown any fear of me. I was sobbing my heart out. What an idiot I’d been! What had I done?
PART II
In the last issue, retired Guiseley businessman Brian Firth told Suburban how he had found an injured tawny owl chick and nursed it back to health. Still aged 11 and in 1958, it was now time for the young flying instructor to give Olly his first lesson... There was nobody around and it was deadly quiet. A row of trees ran towards Yeadon Banks, separating the adjoining fields. I stayed away from them in case Olly flew onto a branch, out of reach. I needed to be sure that he was capable of surviving on his own before taking the risk of him flying off. I’ll never forget his eyes darting everywhere, his head bobbing up and down. At first I sat on the grass with Olly on my arm, just as I had done many times on our lawn. I stood and moved my arm up and down. Olly wasn’t impressed. He simply 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

dug his claws into my jumper, flapping his wings only to keep balance and stayed put. Then I ran slowly across the field. He let go eventually, only to flutter to the ground. Plan C was to throw him in the air, gently and maybe three or four feet from the ground. That one worked he flew back to the ground about three yards away. Each time he flew a little further before landing. So far so good. Until he flew some forty or fifty feet away. Suddenly a mass of all types of birds descended on Olly and attacked him – just like a scene from Hitchcock’s film. I ran at them waving my arms and screaming. Although that
It took time to regain Olly’s trust. Whereas he used to greet me at feeding time, hopping to the branch nearest the aviary door, he was now staring at me from the far corner. When I opened the door he went berserk, fluttering around and squawking like mad. I tried to stroke him to calm him down but he was absolutely terrified. He wasn`t enjoying his food like he used to. I couldn`t take him out onto the side lawn because he wouldn`t let me pick him up. It was three weeks before we reconciled. I’d just come home from school and was preparing Olly’s lamb hearts when I heard the twittering of old. He greeted me at the aviary door and, instead of going straight for the food, he hopped onto my hand, walked up my arm and perched on my shoulder. He was making the little clicking noises that he had done as a baby. Then back into the aviary and straight

I would take Olly into the fields regularly, often followed by bunch of local kids – all under strict instruction not to make sudden movements or noise. By this time it had become routine for Olly to fly into the trees and return either when he was ready or when I called. Mum had commandeered one of dad’s old jackets and made a protective sleeve for me. I’d become quite a proficient owl handler. Looking back, perhaps these flights were indications that Olly was becoming ready for release. But that didn’t occur to me at the time. I was simply playing with my pet owl, wasn’t I?
Olly and Brian at home in Guiseley. Despite early setbacks, Brian turned out to be a good flying instructor.
to his food dish. It was almost as though he was saying “OK, I forgive you”. Olly was back. It was another three weeks before I felt confident enough to take Olly back into the fields. This time my friend from next door, Graham Thewlis, came with me as lookout - to see if other birds were gathering. That flying
lesson was refreshingly uneventful, with Olly now flying almost the width of the field. The following week, on a similar outing, Olly swooped upward and perched himself in a tree. I didn’t have to give his retrieval much thought. He soon flew back onto my outstretched arm, digging in his claws in the process. Over the next few months
One of our neighbours thought not. Someone (I never did find out) had reported us to the police who, in turn, consulted RSPCA. We’d been given three weeks’ notice of their visit, so they can’t have been that worried. But the wait was agonising, and not all the news good. By now, Brian had been caring for Olly for a year and the two had become inseparable. What would the RSPCA inspector have to say, and what was the outcome? The third and concluding part of Brian Firth’s heartwarming story will be in the May edition of Suburban. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 25

FEAST YOUR EARS ON THE SOUNDS OF NATURE THIS SPRING The long, dark winter evenings are over. The clocks have changed and the air is full of the sound of bird song. Bird song begins in mid December, when the days start to get longer. The daily increase of light stimulates the release of special hormones which bring birds into breeding condition. Mistle Thrushes, Song Thrushes and Great Tits are usually the first to start singing and, as the weeks go by, more and more species join in. By the beginning of March, most of our resident birds are singing and by mid March, the first of our annual spring migrants reach Yorkshire. Leeds is full of places to watch birds and listen to bird song from large estates such as Roundhay Park to smaller nature areas. Close to Roundhay Park are Gledhow Valley Woods, the Wyke Beck Valley Trail and Gipton Woods. If you live in Horsforth then Hawksworth Woods and Newlay Woods are a good place to start. Nestling further up the Aire Valley is a very
special place, Rodley Nature Reserve and from here you can walk down the canal to Bramley Falls Wood or in the opposite direction to Calverley Woods. The canal, river and surrounding farmland habitats provide even more species of birds. Travel around the ring road to Pudsey and Tong Road will lead you to places such as Cockerdale, Troydale and Post Hill. All of these amazing places are free to visit. All you have to do is stop, look and listen.
