WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE UPDATE

A

There have been lots of sheds and garages broken into across Rodley, Calverley and Pudsey areas. Thieves are targeting sheds and garages with poor levels of security, often stealing expensive cycles. All too often we are seeing cycles worth several thousand pounds being stolen from cheap sheds costing a couple of hundred pounds, locked up with a padlock that has been bought for a couple of quid. Fortunately there are a number of steps you can take which are inexpensive and easy to install. First have a look at your shed or garage. What sort of condition is it in? If the door or frame is all rotten or wonky then there’s not much point doing anything other than replacing the door or getting a new shed. Often thieves will simply undo the hinge screws to get into your shed, so the first thing to look at is the door. Are the hinges visible from the outside? Are the screws easy accessible and easy to remove? If this is the case you could consider replacing the screws with ‘coach bolts’ or ‘clutch screws’ to both the door and frame side of the hinges.

Th You could also reinforce the rear of the screws with metal plates to make them even more secure. Have a look at the hasp, is it good enough? Install one which protects the hasp and lock from being tampered with. We recommend the use of Secured by Design products which offer a high level of security. A good quality padlock tested to British Standard BN12320 with a 3 – 4 rating for domestic use should be used. Even better, install a ‘shed bar’. If your shed or garage has windows it’s a good idea to apply something to the glass to stop people seeing what is inside. Laminate sheeting can also give the glass added strength and prevent it from breaking. Garage doors can be protected using a ‘door defender’, several products are available on the market which prevent garage doors being opened. Even if your shed is

entered you can still protect your cycle inside the shed. There are many products which can be installed to prevent the removal of bikes or gardening equipment. These ground anchor devices are fastened to the shed frame or floor. It’s recommended that a good quality lock and chain is used to fasten the bike to the anchor. A number of companies supply alarms. These vary from basic battery operated PIR alarms to more complicated wireless systems which can be linked to domestic alarm systems. A lot of these products can be obtained from good hardware stores and are easily installed. If you require further assistance simply call 101 and ask to speak to your local Crime Reduction Officer. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Calverley, Rodley, Stanningley, Farsley, Pudsey, Bramley and New Farnley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

SUBURBAN_MAG_AREA_B_ED5_v1.indd 9

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to

show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A BIRD’S NEW CLOTHES After last month’s depressing news about the effect the cold weather was having on our songbirds, this month we can learn about what happens to birds after the breeding season is over. If you take regular walks in the woodlands in and around Leeds you’ll notice that things have become much quieter. The few birds you hear singing will probably be our resident wren, robin, song thrush and blackbird and you may even hear the occasional fluty burst from a migrant blackcap. It is the male bird that sings and he does this initially to attract a female and also to tell other birds of the same species that he is holding a territory. The species that are still singing may have a second attempt at raising chicks but the majority of our woodland birds will only breed once each year. Consequently, there is no further need for those males to sing. At this time, the whole of a bird’s body changes. The sexual organs of both males and females shut down and shrivel up and all of their energy goes

into making new feathers and laying down fat for the coming months. Instead of being out in the open, woodland birds become secretive and are difficult to see. To make things worse for us, but better for them, the tree canopy is dense and dark. They hunt for food in secrecy and only make small calls to each other. Over the coming weeks, an adult bird will replace all of its feathers, most of which will have become worn and damaged through wear and tear; parasite build up and exposure to environmental conditions such as wind and UV light. Very soon they will emerge again looking splendid and pristine.

See if you can see any birds with worn feathers or perhaps you will find feathers on the ground when you take your walk. I’m hopeful that you’ll be able to hear lots of squeaky calls from fledgling birds while you’re out. These often group together to form feeding parties and will stay together throughout the autumn and winter. We’ll talk about them another time. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. For details of classes email linda.startbirding@gmail. com or call 07778 768719. 50 YEARS OF QUALITY & FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE It started in 1965 as a two-man, Beeston-based plumbing business run by Brian & Kathleen Passmore. Fast forward to 2015, and Passmore Group – with its three brands MoreBathrooms, MoreAbility & MoreBuild – is a 50-strong home improvement specialist celebrating its 50th anniversary. Now managed by the founders’ sons Tony and Steve, the company has not only survived the recession; it has emerged stronger than ever, with a 2,000 sqft showroom in Wortley, 15 more members of staff than before the economic downturn and ambitious growth plans set to be achieved by the end of 2017. Such significant expansion & growth plans reflect the solid customer base that Passmore has established, and the extent to which the company attracts new business via word of

mouth recommendations. Throughout a period of continued development for the business, Tony has been keen to maintain the deep-rooted family values on which the company was first founded. “Passmore has stood the test of time because we are committed to quality – rather than using subcontractors we employ our own multi-skilled staff meaning we can offer a fully managed, design, supply & installation service across all aspects of what we do and safeguard the standards delivered to customers. We have plans to open a training academy in 2016 enabling us to protect our

business model, whilst nurturing future talent and maintaining the level of service delivered to customers - after half a century of hard work, it is crucial that we maintain the reputation for which we’ve become renowned.” This commitment to customer service and ‘doing the right thing’ also goes some way to explaining why Tony undertakes so many activities for charity. Most recently he cycled 500km across Burma, raising in excess of £3,000 for the William Merritt Disabled Living Centre in Leeds in the process. A PROFILE OF BRAMLEY There is a strong sense of history in Bramley and at the start of the 20th Century Bramley liked to be called “The village in west Leeds”. The interest in local history in the area is strong and there is a very active and welcoming history society, contact the library for more information. Most of the Victorian buildings along Bramley Town Street were demolished in 1969 – 72, swept away in a modernisation programme which delivered 2 council estates and the new Bramley Shopping Centre. This has been called one of the least sensitive redevelopment programmes in Yorkshire by many. The whole ward contains several post war semidetached council housing estates. Under the “Right to buy” scheme many of these have been purchased and the need for good quality local housing is keenly felt in an area with such strong local community spirit. There will be a start in the next year or so with 40 new quality council properties being built. The jewel in the crown of Bramley is the still functioning Edwardian swimming baths. In 2010 the running costs were deemed prohibitive by the local authority, but 18 months of astonishing effort and hard work by the “Friends of Bramley Baths” resulted in them become a community led enterprise in January 2013. They have had a new lease of life with various exciting activities and new swimming sessions now available - the future is looking promising for this historic building thanks to the hard work of the board, staff and community support. Visit http:// friendsofbramleybaths.wordpress.com/ Bramley Park has had significant investment made over the last year. Along with the enchanting Bramley Fall Woods and the 2 mile stretch of Tow Path by the Leeds and Liverpool

canal leading to the Rodley Nature reserve it would be easy to be mistaken into thinking you were in the heart of the countryside. Events are attracted to Bramley Park such as the recent “parkrun” launch with over 200 runners taking part despite the rain. The 5k weekly run is organised by a team of dedicated volunteers who were given a grant for the start-up costs by the local Bramley and Stanningley Councillors through the Inner West Community Committee. The Park Run is one of a host of recent new arrivals to Bramley, including Costa Coffee and Wetherspoons. Another is the Bramley Community Shop, a social enterprise run by local charity Bramley Elderly Action. It’s not

LOCAL NEWS just a charity shop, as it also hosts a range of community services including the Bramley Credit Union and ‘Money Buddies’ who support people in financial difficulty. Local Councillors provide grants to a number of projects in Bramley through their Community Committee Wellbeing fund. These include the Christmas lights and big switch on event, ‘Winter Warmer’ packs for vulnerable older people and projects at the Fairfield Community Centre. Many of the schemes were suggested by local residents at the Bramley Community Forum, a bi-monthly meeting open to everyone to find out more about what’s going on in the local community. The next meeting is on Thursday 30th July at 7pm at the Eric Atkinson Centre on Wellington Gardens. For more information contact the Area Support Team on 0113 3367856. Bramley is bouncing back attracting investment and alongside a thriving partnership approach delivering vital services, the future looks bright! looking good – dead head all the flowers as they fade – then apply a summer feed of fish, blood and bone, alternatively, growmore.

This is the start of the holiday season, so if you are going away - spruce up your front garden, and ask a friendly neighbour to watch over and water your hanging baskets and tubs.

Continue to take soft wood cuttings of pinks, carnations, geraniums, shrubs and roses, inserting them into good compost and keeping them moist and shaded until they have rooted. This is good fun to try, even if you are only partially successful.

Then some of the crops you sowed earlier will be ready for harvesting, so you will be able to enjoy the fresh picked taste and smile. If you have the space, final sowings can be made of peas, french beans and beetroot. Autumn and winter brassicas plants should be planted now, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts etc. Keep sowing salad items every two weeks. Indoor and outdoor tomatoes, together with cucumbers, melons and peppers should be fed on a weekly basis, and all crops should be watered regularly in dry spells to stop them bolting and running to seed. Your roses and flowering shrubs will be looking brilliant at the moment, so to keep them

Herbs are bursting with flavour this month, and are ideal for cutting and drying. Rinse them in cold water, shake off, and hang them in bunches in a warm airy space out of direct sunlight. When dry, strip of the leaves and store them in glass jars in your cupboards in the dark. Soft fruit is beginning to swell and be ready for picking, so delight in the many varieties available – eating them however you enjoy them – then freezing, jam making or baking to extend the season. Flower, vegetable and craft shows are popping up all over, so look out for them and be inspired – either as an interested person or even as a novice exhibitor.
