A AIREBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB ‘MY YORKSHIRE’ OPEN COMPETITION There has been a terrific response to this year’s competition and this has provided the judges with a difficult but pleasurable task in making the final decisions. After long deliberation three winners from the very high standard of entry have been selected, one for each section: A: Adult – ‘Limestone and Rainbows, Nr Malham’ by Kevin Nutter. 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. There are so many opportunities for capturing the beauty of this season, from wild, wide landscapes, water reflections, early mornings and evenings, to close ups of fruit, flowers and leaf mosaics. You are taking pictures of what pleases you and so decide what it is you particularly like about what you are looking at and set your camera accordingly, or just snap it with your phone or camera before it disappears, the same shot will not occur again. With digital do not be afraid of taking a number of shots, you can always

delete ones which do not come out as you want. For getting atmosphere into your pictures go out early mornings, dawn, or sundown. The sun is low in the sky and orange tones predominate. Early mornings, before the day warms up, have mists in the valleys and woodlands giving atmosphere and mystery. Shooting into the sun should be tried and can, with care, produce some startling sunburst effects if you can get an object e.g. tree between the sun and the lens, it can certainly add the ‘wow’ factor. Backlighting and mist in woodland can create atmospheric shafts of sunlight. Autumn is the time when there is an abundance of colourful fungi, fruits and multi-coloured leaf patterns,

so do not be afraid to get down on your knees or tummies and get up close. It is also the time when crops are harvested, when hay is cut and baled which produce interesting lines. Still water in lakes, ponds or canals is ideal for capturing reflections of surrounding colours and shooting lowdown near the waters edge can create symmetrical compositions. Long exposures will help smooth out rough or moving water, but ripples can create interesting distortions. For long exposures support your camera on a tripod, a wall, fence post, top of your car or hold firmly and lean against something solid like a tree. If the sun comes out, get out with your camera. LOCAL NEWS BIRDWATCHING WHILE STANDING STILL It's the start of autumn migration and, over the next few weeks, birds will be making their way to their winter feeding grounds. It's the time when unusual birds can turn up on your local birdwatching patch, or even in your garden, so keep your eyes peeled. Here’s where some simple birdwatching techniques can help. As birds move south, they sometimes latch onto feeding parties of common birds. A good birdwatching technique is to ‘work’ your way through each group of birds to see whether you can spot something unusual. This might be something you’d normally do when sitting in a hide at a reserve but try to get into the habit of doing this while walking in your local woodland. If see a group of birds moving around, or hear some coming towards you, lean against a tree to obscure your outline and let them come to you. If you keep perfectly still, you’ll be able to get a good look at each bird. Most will be young blue tits, long-tailed tits and great tits but there is a chance you’ll see something else. Similarly, take a bit of time to study the species of birds using your garden as a feeding station. Remember last month’s lesson? The first rule of thumb is to remember that there are a lot of juvenile common birds around at this time of year. 16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Some can look quite different to their parents, so do take a good field guide out with you. This should give you a good illustration of juvenile birds for each species. It would be well worth swatting up on the young common birds likely to be seen in your chosen habitat before you go out. It will save time when you're in the field. Most of the tatty adult common birds in woodlands will have almost completed their moult by now. However most ducks are still in ‘eclipse’ (that is what we call the moulting stage of ducks). Think common first then consider something scarce.

I had a cuckoo in my garden for a few seconds as it tried to escape being mobbed by crows on its journey southwards. My best garden tick yet! I also get grey wagtails at my pond every year.

Some of the birds to look out for in our woodlands and gardens during the autumn migration are chiffchaff, willow warbler, wood warbler, blackcap, goldcrest, redstart, spotted flycatcher and pied flycatcher. Make sure that you look at all the birds coming to your garden feeders. If you have a good sized pond, or you’re visiting an area with a pond or a stream, you may find a sedge warbler, a common sandpiper or a dispersing grey wagtail. A couple of years ago

Young dippers and kingfishers disperse from their nest sites and travel downstream making your urban stretch of water a possible feeding area for a time. Fields with grazing cattle or horses could also attract passing yellow wagtails. They feed on insects that are attracted to dung. Look for them around the hooves and mouths of the grazing animals.

CHAPTER ONE: THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE Written by Alison Craven (extract from an un-published novel)

It was the best day, then week, then month of my whole long-legged life. First of all we got a letter from the Council. Mam screamed and jumped up and down and so me and our Linda screamed and jumped up and down because we were going to be RE-HOUSED! And not just to another house that smelled of other people, to a BRAND NEW COUNCIL HOUSE WITH UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND AN INSIDE LAVVY AND A BATHROOM. We’d been waiting forever because the Housing thought we were a pushover because there was no dad. Mam said if we stayed put and refused highrise or dead people’s, the rent man would have no option but to offer us a brand new house. And she was right. Me and our Linda really wanted high-rise as it would be really posh to catch the lift every day but then Mam said what happens when the lift breaks or there’s a fire? We were the very last ones in our street; me and our Linda were even frightened to go to the lavvy as you never knew who might be down the ginnel and we’d seen a rat. One morning a dustbin had been turned over

but Mam said it would have been a dog. Some people even had moved and left their dogs and cats behind. The letter said Number 7, Sycamore Crescent, would be ready in six weeks but that we had to go look at it and then go to the Housing Area West Office and tell them if we wanted it. Mam let me and Linda have the day off school as we had to see it too; it was only fair and we hadn’t to tell Dad otherwise he’d be trying it on again. I said Mam was daft for saying that because we didn’t even know where he was and she told me not to be so cheeky and you hadn’t to call an adult daft, especially your mam. It was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and had a very spacious fitted kitchen, a luxury bathroom and separate toilet and a very handy cupboard under the staircase! The painter knew our dad and told Mam that she could look through the wallpaper book and choose what paper we wanted in every room. We went straight to the Housing Area West Office and said we’d have it. ‘And I want to take David Ernest Hewitt off the rent book,’ my mam said. I looked at our Linda but she didn’t care. I couldn’t believe it. The lady said, ‘Dave Hewitt who drinks in the White Lion?’ And my mam said, ‘When he’s not residing at Her

Majesty’s pleasure.’ ‘He’s a right one, he is,’ the lady said, ‘my sister used to go out with him but he dumped her. Have you got your divorce papers?’ I squeezed our Linda’s hand and she said , ‘Ow!’ but she still didn’t care. She was pretending she wasn’t listening My mam told the lady that they weren’t divorced but she wished they were and would be if she had the money. ‘Well, you seem really lovely, love,’ said the lady, ‘so I’ll do it and say I’ve seen the papers. Don’t tell no-one.’ I didn’t say nothing to Mam about the divorce that she hadn’t got; she was always saying stuff that never happened and I hoped it never would either. ‘Does Dad live with the Queen at Buckingham Palace then?’ our Linda said. ‘Sort of,’ said Mam, but I think she was just joking. On the way home we were walking on air, although I had a blister and the top had come off and it was rubbing like mad, but I didn’t even care, we were still on air and we saw a rat but didn’t care. We called at my mam’s friend, Aunty Joan’s to tell her. She lived in the next street but she didn’t want to be re-housed, she was going to Australia for £10. With Uncle Brian and all their furniture. I was a bit jealous but would not swap my life for all the tea in China.

SHORT STORIES Aunty Joan screamed when Mam showed her the letter and I picked our Linda up and swung her round but we knocked Aunty Joan’s ironing board over and Mam clouted me. Aunty Joan said it didn’t matter as we were excited and gave us a glass of cordial and Mam had a cup of tea and baby Steven had a biscuit.

‘No,’ said Mam, ‘I mean, I don’t know what to choose – we could do with a new three piece.’ Aunty Joan stood up and put her hands on the table. I thought she was going to be mad. She wasn’t. She said, ‘Did I say whatever you wanted, Maureen? Do you think Empire Stores will send a mister to Australia after me? No. As I said, it’s from me and Brian.’

I loved going to Aunty Joan’s, even if she wasn’t my real aunty, I didn’t care, because I didn’t have any real aunties or uncles or cousins. She let us look at her catalogue and she said that in four weeks when her and Uncle Brian went to catch the boat to Australia, she said I could have the catalogue. I couldn’t believe it. We were getting a brand new house, we could choose the wallpaper and I was getting a catalogue. And then, I thought I had died and was an angel in heaven above. Aunty Joan said to Mam that she could look through the catalogue and get whatever she wanted like furniture and even beds and stuff and it was a present from her and Uncle Brian because they were going away and we were moving and so it was a celebration present. Mam said, ‘Are you sure, Joan?’ ‘Of course I’m sure, Maureen, it’s no skin off our noses, is it?’ Mam nodded. ‘Well, I don’t know what to …’ ‘You don’t have to say anything, love.’ 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

She snatched the catalogue from under my nose, snapped it shut and handed it to Mam. I pretended I was reading it and pretended to jump when she grabbed it, but I wasn’t, I was listening and my heart was beating and my tummy was fluttering. While my mam and Aunty Joan were gabbing I went over to stroke Aunty Joan’s cocktail cabinet. My Mam glared at me and Aunty Joan said, ‘Don’t open it.’ Sometimes Aunty Joan opened it for me to look inside. It was the most gorgeous thing in the whole world and it played Some Enchanted Evening and was all mirrors up the sides, on the bottom, on the inside of the lid and had little cocktail sticks with plastic cherries and pineapples on. Aunty Joan had really lovely little glasses ringed with REAL GOLD and a jar of MARASCHINO CHERRIES. As we were leaving Aunty Joan gave Mam two tins of corned beef. Her friend worked at Grandways and she got dinted cans for a couple of pennies and sometimes for

nothing. I’m going to work at Grandways when I grow up. We carried the catalogue home and couldn’t stop talking about all the stuff we would get. If we got our order in by tomorrow then everything would be delivered to Aunty Joan’s in three weeks and we would just have to carry it round to our house. I was allowed to choose anything, ANYTHING I wanted from the girls’ section; clothes and shoe wise, not toys. Mam said our Linda had to like everything because she wasn’t having anything new but would be having my handme-downs when I’d grown out of them. So that was fair, because I was nine and three quarters and our Linda was only eight and I was big for my age and Linda was a little squirt. Our Linda was a right giddy kipper and said everything I’d picked was fab – I don’t think she’d cottoned on that she wasn’t getting anything. Mam chose all sorts for baby Steven. I felt like a millionaireress, like Petula Clark and Viv Nicholson. That night me and our Linda laid in bed and I was happier than I’d ever been in my whole life, even though she kept scratching my leg with her toenails. I did feel sorry for our Dad though but Mam said every time he came back he gave her another baby, which I thought was very nice of him. My Grandma says once a Don Joanne, always a Don Joanne, whatever that means, but I think it’s pretty bad. To be continued in next month’s edition of Suburban.

The long summer nights will soon be ending, so it is time to look slightly ahead to autumn tasks. You lawn may have been used for many activities over the summer, so it is time to scarify (rake) all the moss and dead material out. Then give it a cut at a different angle to normal, which will catch all the creeping grasses which have been lifted when raking. Next, take a garden fork and spike all the heavy traffic areas, four inches deep every nine inches. This is followed by an autumn lawn food, which stimulates the roots without making the grass grow taller. If you have any bare patches, over sow with a good grass seed, and fill any hollows with fine soil in ¼ inch layers. In the flower garden, continue to remove sweet pea seed pods to prolong flowering, and feed your dahlias every two weeks to build up the tubers. As your summer bedding plants finish flowering, remove everything and replant with winter/ spring plants like wall flowers and winter pansies. Daffodils and crocuses may also be incorporated in your designs, using different heights of flowering bulbs in drifts for dramatic effect.

Start to harvest the last of your summer vegetable crops, storing onions, potatoes etc in a dark cool space for use over the winter. Have a good check on your winter crops, such as sprouts, cabbages and kale etc, to ensure they are well staked if they have grown tall. Make sure the soil is firm around their stems, and ensure any covers are well secured to keep your crops safe from birds and animals. Lift small sections of any herbs you particularly like to cook with, and place them in reasonable size pots in good compost on the kitchen windowsill. Compost bins should be filled in six inch layers, using all the spent plants and garden rubbish – then adding egg boxes and crumpled newspaper in between. The use of a compost accelerator is highly recommended, as this will speed up the decomposition of the plant material into good useful compost.

In the recent case of British Waterways Board v Smith¸ the Employment Appeals Tribunal found that the dismissal of an employee for comments made on Facebook, which he claimed were untrue, was fair.

The case above and other recent cases highlight the importance of understanding that work related comments made on personal social media accounts could result in disciplinary action being taken by an employer if they are disparaging or derogatory or bring the employer into disrepute.

In this case, Mr Smith had made derogatory comments on Facebook about his managers and work, and a claim that two years earlier he had been drinking whilst on standby. The company have a policy stating that during a standby period, workers are not permitted to consume alcohol. Whilst Mr Smith denied that he had in fact been drinking, and claimed that the comments were banter, he was dismissed without notice on the grounds of gross misconduct as his comments had undermined the confidence his employer or the public could have in him. This case follows other cases for social
