FRIENDS OF PUDSEY ROLLER There once was a lovely old steam roller standing in Pudsey Park, from 1959 to 1990, upon which hundreds of children played on over the years. Many of these children would come along after school and pretend to drive this colourful machine all over the park, or perhaps visit with their grans or aunties on sunny Sundays and buy ice-creams from the nearby shop. For over thirty years children would play on this Leeds built steam roller and these children will now be at least thirty years old, some with children of their own.

order, not to driven round the park but to be displayed in and around the Pudsey area. This old steamroller is still owned by Leeds City Council but now relies entirely on voluntary subscriptions, bequests and donations for its restoration and future upkeep.

For several reasons it became inappropriate to maintain the roller as a playground thing and it was removed in 1990, going into various council yards before being taken into the care of the Road Roller Association with whom it is being restored to working

Friends of Pudsey Roller supports and helps the restoration project and welcomes new members to help continue the essential work of fund-raising. If you’d like to join us then please follow the link at www. pudsey-roller.co.uk or e-mail pudseyroller@yahoo.co.uk or phone 0113 2570371.

SILHOUETTES BY AIREBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB How do you distinguish between a rose and a daisy or a cow and horse or even a person and a gorilla? Easy, you recognise the different shapes. This is the first and most fundamental step in identification. The recognition of individuals that have the same shape then comes from details. Some shapes are so strong and characteristic the individual object or person can be identified immediately for example the ‘Angel Of The North’, Blackpool Tower or Bruce Forsyth in pose. Shapes are very strong determining features in any view and this is made good use of in photography in silhouettes. Silhouettes, solid black shapes without detail against a lighter background are a very good way to convey drama, mystery, emotion and mood, and often stand out because of their simplicity. The basic process is to place your subject in front of a light source and expose for the light, which will be the background and not the subject, the lighter the background the darker the silhouette will appear. To photograph silhouettes first you will need a strong subject with a clearly recognisable shape. Remember silhouettes are 2 dimensional and so the shape needs to hold the interest. If you are taking silhouettes of people you want to choose their profile, not full face, as this will pick out their features so they will be more easily recognised. Secondly you do not want to light the subject so turn off the flash. 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Late Supper by Brian Hopps

The best times of day to take silhouettes are around sunrise and sunset when the Sun is low in the sky. This is not so arduous at the moment with autumn and winter day lengths. When the Sun is low it gives a range of colours and some feature to the background. Having said that any bright light source will do and you do not want too much in the background as it may be distracting. Keeping the foreground simple is also important. If there is more than one element to the subject keep them separate to make the most of their individual shapes. When shooting in ‘AUTO’ mode on your camera you are letting the camera make all the decisions, it will work out the exposure as it focuses and so will light the subject. To avoid this you have expose on the background by pointing your camera at the brightest point pressing the shutter button halfway and holding it, you can then move the camera back to frame the subject and fully depress the shutter. Using a

small aperture (f14 or higher) will keep everything in focus. With phones and tablets where all you do is point and shoot you will have to look for your silhouettes, as it is more difficult to create them as you can with a camera. The same basic rules apply, strong, solid shapes against a bright background. If the Sun is the source of light then try to cover it with part or all of the subject. If your phone or tablet will not show a silhouette on the screen just ‘tap’ on the brightest part of the image and this should put the subject in silhouette. ‘App stores/shops’ do have a number of camera Apps that will help you be more creative and extend the abilities of your camera. You have nothing to lose so start experimenting. Chris Owens Aireborough Camera Club www.aireboroughcameraclub.co.uk

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Calverley, Rodley, Stanningley, Farsley, Pudsey, Bramley and New Farnley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to

show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

FEEDING GARDEN BIRDS PART 1: AKA “I ONLY EVER GET PIGEONS” People are always coming to tell me that they put out food to attract birds but they only ever get pigeons. If this sounds like you then you’ll be pleased to hear that you can change that. Here’s what could be happening. Firstly, I’m guessing that you’re trying to cut costs. That’s understandable, bird food isn’t cheap and, once you’ve started putting food out for the birds you’re bound to feel that you want to keep doing it. Am I right? So you shop around for the least expensive food you can find in the hope that you can keep your feeders full all the year round. Well my bird loving friends, I can see that this is well intentioned but by buying that inexpensive food (from your local garden centre or discount store) you can almost guarantee that it is packed with wheat, corn and flaked maize. The very thing that pigeons love! Most of the inexpensive bird food sold by large retail outlets is bulked up with wheat, corn, biscuit meal and flaked maize, The high energy seed, preferred by the small wild birds that you’re wanting to attract, is only found in low proportions. Your little birds will throw out all the food they don’t like and will only eat the good stuff. You’ve probably seen them doing this. Here’s another reason...The inexpensive food is likely to be stored in large warehouses for a very long time. There is no guarantee that the storage conditions are cool enough to keep oil rich foods from turning rancid and dry enough to deter moulds from growing. Your small birds may find this food unpalatable and may bypass your garden feeders in favour of someone else’s. If you’re buying peanuts from the same place, then your feeders could be a source of aspergillus mould which creates the deadly aflatoxins responsible for killing wild birds. And here’s another reason... If you’ve filled up your feeders with predominantly wheat

12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Not the only type of winged guest you can attract!

and corn and all your target species have turned up their little beaks at what’s on offer at your feeding station, your food will certainly go off very quickly and further deter the birds from visiting. You’ll watch in earnest in the hope that something stops by but your food will be on the least wanted list. So, what’s the solution? Well, if you think about how much food is going to waste by continuing to buy bird food in this way, and how little you’re actually helping the small birds, it may not surprise you to hear that you can make a big difference by changing your supplier. Buy high quality bird food from a reputable dealer. Check out my blog Duckwoman’s Diary for more on this topic and details of suppliers. The food bought from them will contain a variety of oil rich seeds which have been carefully sourced and stored in optimal conditions. Pretty soon you’ll be encouraging a range of garden birds to your feeders which will give you no end of enjoyment over the winter months. Don’t worry if you still get one or two pigeons, they’ll clean up underneath your feeders and deter rodents. In Part 2, we’ll look at the types of food available, how to attract different species to your garden and when to put out food. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. LOCAL NEWS IT'S EASY TO IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE Did you know that by wiggling your toes and stretching your feet each morning and swaying from side to side it can help prevent stiffness and balance issues? Most people suffer from dizziness at some point in their lives; but while our instinct is to sit down to resolve the problem, in fact we should keep moving. Top advice from a Leeds Neuro-physiotherapist is to ‘gradually return to physical activity rather than trying to prevent episodes of dizziness by becoming inactive.’ This will not give the balance system the input it needs to learn to compensate for the problem, instead by still continuing to do as much as we can (without triggering severe dizziness) we allow the system to learn to compensate. It is worth noting, however, that a few people who have sustained balance problems may benefit from medical investigations and/or physiotherapy treatment.

“Maintaining balance is a complex function,” said Jill Fisher, Principle physiotherapist from Leeds Neurophysiotherapy. “Information comes from three main sources; the inner ear, vision and position sense from muscles and joints, particularly in our spine and legs especially feet.” “These systems give us an awareness of where our body is in relationship to the environment. “In different circumstances different weighting is given to the different senses so in the dark we must rely more on our inner ear system and information from the muscle and joint systems less from our visual system.” Jill shared that a top tip if your balance is poor, is to help your visual system to compensate by keeping some lights on at night and be aware that in visually unstable environments (such as in crowds) your balance will be more compromised as vision will not be able to compensate so well

for problems involving the other systems. Another top tip is to ‘pep up’ the information coming from muscles and joints by preventing stiffness, by carrying out gentle exercises in moving feet and toes through a full range of movement. Also, standing and swaying side to side is an exercise that can be really effective at improving balance especially if carried out with the eyes closed; initially carry out touching a stable support in front of you. The advanced form of this exercise is standing with feet close together or standing on one leg. If you feel physiotherapy may help you with balance problems, you can ask your doctor to refer to an NHS service, or go directly to a private neurological or vestibular specialist physiotherapy practice.

SHORT STORIES

CHAPTER THREE: THE WORST DAY

open so we went in because it was our house anyway so why should we knock?

Written by Alison Craven (extract from an un-published novel)

A man was there wallpapering the downstairs room and it looked really lovely. We’d chosen an ever so with-it pattern in brown and orange swirly swirls to match the new three piece.

Miss said I could read my story out to the whole class because I had a very vivid imagination. I had to stand in front of the blackboard next to her desk. My story was about a girl whose mam had just been given a brand new house with underfloor heating and an inside lavvy and the mam’s friend had a catalogue. She let the mam and the girl chose loads of new stuff for their new house from the catalogue and they didn’t even have to pay one penny for it because the lady with the catalogue, who was called Joan, had gone to live in Australia and Empire Stores would never send a mister all the way to Australia to get the money. When I’d finished everybody clapped and Miss said, ‘Well done, Susan.’ I was just like the queen bee in the hive. At playtime Carol Ingham came up to me and said that her mam got stuff from Aunty Joan’s catalogue as well and that she never even told them she was going to Australia. She said her mam would be really mad because she was going to order a Teasmade. I’ve never heard of a Teasmade whatever, they are, and I don’t think Aunty Joan’s catalogue would have them, so I think she was lying. Me and our Linda decided to go see the new house on our way home from school. We ran like billie-o, so mam wouldn’t worry where we were. The door was

The man looked a bit mad and said, ‘What do you to want? You should knock, you know.’ Our Linda said, ‘You should knock, you know, because this is our new house. So there!’ I squeezed our Linda’s arm and told her to stop being so cheeky. She pulled away and stood there all cocky with her chin sticking out. ‘Sorry about her,’ I said, ‘she doesn’t mean to be rude, it just comes out of her gob like fresh air. It looks really, really nice and my Mam will be really happy.’ ‘You’ve put that piece on upside down,’ our Linda said, pointing. We all moved closer to have a look. She pointed again, ‘There!’ The man stepped back, then forward, then back again, looking. He took his hat off and scratched his head. ‘I don’t think I have,’ he said, ‘in fact, I know I haven’t!’ ‘Well, if you’re sure…’ said Linda, ‘if you’re sure, then I’ll take your word for it.’ ‘Get out! Clear off, you cheeky little blighter,’ he said, ‘before I give you a good hiding!’

We ran out and laughed all the way home. ---It seemed like forever waiting for the new house to be ready and then when it was ready, we still had to wait because there was a problem with the bath. Mam had sorted everything out; the stuff we were taking was piled on top of the boxes from Aunty Joan and the stuff we were leaving was piled in the kitchen. We were still sleeping in our old beds and sitting on the horrible old sofa but it didn’t matter because we knew it wouldn’t be long before we were ladies of the manor with our onyx ashtray and moquette cushions. After another week of waiting, Mam said she was going to go to the Housing Area West Office while we were at school and give them what for. She was so sick of waiting and she wasn’t the only one. Our Linda said we should have the day off and go with her, but she just said, ‘Off you go, see you this aft.’ Mam was waiting for us at the school gates because it was Wednesday and we always go to our grandma’s for our tea on a Wednesday. We still didn’t know when we could move in to our new house. Mam said that now here was a problem with the underfloor heating, but it was best to have everything tickety boo right from the start. ‘Yes, well, we want everything to be perfect, we don’t we?’ I said, ‘We don’t want to be taking all our swanky new stuff into a rotten house, do we?’

SHORT STORIES ‘We alreadiy live in a rotten, stinking house,’ said Linda, ‘so I don’t care about the stupid underfloor heating, I just want to get out it and have all our new bunk beds and stuff.’ ‘I’m glad you reminded me, Linda,’ Mam said, ‘don’t either of you breathe a word to Grandma or Granddad about the catalogue stuff. I don’t want them to know about it just yet… so keep it dark.’ It’s a good job she told us because I’m as sure as eggs is eggs, we would have told them. Mam always had little secrets from Granddad and so did Grandma. We’d get a biscuit and Grandma would say, ‘Don’t tell your granddad.’ Or Mam would say, ‘Can you lend us a pound, Mam, but don’t tell Dad.’ Me and our Linda got tied in knots wondering what was a secret and what wasn’t! We had neck of lamb with carrots and pearl barley, then rice pudding with jam for our teas and it was so delicious I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. After tea me and our Linda went to watch telly with Granddad while Grandma and Mam made a cup of tea. We watched Casey Jones, which we didn’t like at all, but Granddad did. Then Mam and Grandma came in with the tea and a Blue Riband each and we all watched The Magic Roundabout. It was dark when we walked home. As we got nearer our street, it got darker and darker and really scary because nobody at all was about. There were no lights in any of the houses and no people in any of the houses. It was a ghost street and I hated it. We were really pleased that Mam had banked the fire up before she’d left the house and the

fire was still in, so it was lovely and warm, even if it looked like a tip. The next morning I was taking the wee bucket to empty down the lavvy when a car pulled into the street. A man in a suit and a hat got out and smiled at me. I smiled back, even though I hadn’t to talk to strange men, nobody said anything about smiling at them. ‘Do you know where Mrs Hewitt lives?’ he said. ‘That’s my mam! She just lives there, at number 12.’ ‘Well! That’s splendid, splendid, my dear, thank you,’ he said. ‘I’ll just empty the wee bucket and I’ll take you,’ I said. ‘That’s fine, I can see number 12,’ he said. He got out his briefcase and locked his car. I flew down the ginnel, wee sloshed up the sides of the bucket and down my legs into my sock and shoe but I didn’t mind. It must be the man from the Council telling us our house was ready. I tipped the bucket down the lavvy and raced back. Our Linda’s eyes were really wide and she looked shocked. Mam was on her knees as she’d been raking out the cinders from the fire and our Steven was pulling at the man’s trousers and holding his arms up. ‘Is it ready, Mam?’ I said, ‘Is our house ready? Can me move in today? Shall me and our Linda have the day off? I can’t believe—‘ ‘Shush, Susan,’ said Mam. ‘No,

it’s not that.’ Everybody looked really serious and I couldn’t work it out. ‘You do realise that receiving stolen goods is extremely serious and can carry a prison sentence?’ said the man. Mam went a bit white and had to hold on to the coal scuttle. Me and our Linda looked at each other with our mouths wide open. ‘A van will be sent later today to collect all the furniture and housewares. The clothes are another story. I’d suggest you make some arrangements to pay for them.’ Mam nodded and looked down at her black hands. A tear plopped onto her finger. ‘It’s up to them higher up than me to decide whether the police will be involved, but I’ll do my best to get it sorted out as soon as possible, in view of the circumstances.’ ‘Thank you,’ Mam whispered in a little voice. ‘If you could make arrangements to pay for the clothes etcetera, that would go a long way in your favour.’ ‘I’ll do my best,’ said Mam. ‘Good, good,’ said the man, ‘That’s it then, as I said, a van will be round later today, so make sure you’re in and everything’s ready for removal.’ ‘Removal?’ said our Linda, ‘You can’t remove it, it’s ours! Aunty Joan gave us it as a celebration present! You can’t just barge in and take people’s stuff, you… you… big pig!’

‘Linda!’ said Mam, ‘I’m sorry, she’s upset that’s all.’ ‘Well, he can’t just—‘ ‘LINDA! Be quiet. Go get ready for school you two. Go on, NOW!’ I could tell Mam’s voice was all wobbly and I thought she was going to cry. Me and our Linda went up the first two steps and sat down to listen. ‘Ah, one more thing,’ the man said, ‘you wouldn’t happen to have an address for Mrs Joan Thornton, would you?’ I squeezed our Linda’s arm and she squeezed mine back. ‘She’s on her way to Australia. I’ve

no idea, I’m sorry,’ said Mam. ‘Well, bear in mind any information you can give us will obviously go in your favour.’ The man started to move about and we could hear Mam had stood up so we shot up the stairs and got our coats and hats. When we came back down, Mam was sitting on the old sofa with her head in her hands, roaring. Our Linda picked our Steven up and sat next to Mam and I went and made her a cup of tea with three sugars. ‘How have you done anything wrong, Mam?’ said our Linda. ‘It’s not fair. Aunty Joan gave us a lovely present and we just said

thank you, didn’t we? I wish my dad had been here, don’t you?’ ‘Ooo no!’ said Mam, ‘No… we’d of all ended up in Armley if he’d been here.’ I gave mam her tea and sat on the floor. I was so sad and felt so sorry for her – she was only trying to do nice things for us and now she was in big trouble. I wiped my nose on the sleeve of my cardigan and went over to the cocktail cabinet and opened the lid. “Some Enchanted Evening’ filled room with happiness and my smiled a little smile. ‘Nobody can ever take our cocktail cabinet though, can they?’ I said.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

The North wind will blow, and we shall have snow, so make sure your garden is ready for this winter weather. Continue to cut down any perennial plants which have finished flowering, removing weeds and fallen vegetation as you work. Are your supports, fences, sheds etc in good condition to withstand winter gales. If you are receiving bare root plants and shrubs for planting now, make sure you prepare the planting hole properly – incorporating plenty of organic matter, old compost or manure. Then add a dressing of long acting fertilizer, such as bone meal or similar to provide the best situation for your new arrivals. If you have a favourite shrub, consider taking cuttings after the last leaves have fallen. Find a shoot about 12” long, then make a straight cut just below a leaf joint. This is followed by a sloping cut, about 8” above. Make a slit trench, with sand in the bottom and place the cutting in to a depth of 6”. Firm the soil down, water if very dry, leaving the area undisturbed until next year. Fruit bushes which have finished fruiting should be pruned now, with new raspberry and blackberry canes tied to their supporting canes. Autumn fruiting raspberries are normally cut down at the end of next month. All stone fruit should be left unpruned until new growth emerges in the spring. The grass growing on in your lawns will have slowed down with the cooler weather, although if it is growing too long, give it another cut with the lawnmower blades raised slightly higher. Then take your mower to be serviced, or do it yourself. This is also a good time to clean and sharpen all your other garden tools. Finally house plants, reduce their watering to coincide with the darker days, and make sure they are not too close to a window pane as they may be damaged by any cold spells in the night. 22 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR RYCROFTS IN SWINNOW Residents in the Rycrofts area of Swinnow will have seen a number of improvements in the last few months. From new carpeting and other improvements to communal areas in tower blocks to new gardens, fencing alongside the border with Stanningley Road, tarmacking and making parking areas better, there is certainly a buzz around the Rycrofts. One of the final pieces of these works, improvements to the parking area at Rycroft Place, is nearly complete, with new tarmac already laid. Funding for these improvements has come about as a result of urging from local 26 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

need of significant improvements. Local ward members Richard Lewis, Josie Jarosz and Mick Coulson (Labour, Pudsey) have been pushing for some time to ensure that this land is turned into a community green space. An action day, undertaken by Leeds Council and Yorkshire Housing Association, confirmed that locals would like a landscaped area that can be used by all. Funding has now been provided through the local Housing Advisory Panel for significant improvements Councillors Josie Jarosz, Richard Lewis and Mick Coulson (Labour, Pudsey). The communal and outdoor areas were becoming less appealing and in need of restoration. The ward members were adamant that improvements were required in order to ensure the Rycrofts were brought back to their past glory. Councillor Josie Jarosz (Labour, Pudsey) said: “The Rycroft blocks are getting a new lease of life- it really shows what a lick of paint, some tarmac and other simple improvements can make. “As Councillors we know that

to the space. This includes the planting of trees, fencing to keep the area safe and a mixed shrub bed. Councillor Josie Jarosz (Labour, Pudsey) said: “It’s no good having an open space if it isn’t looked after or used. The land at the Waterloos has the capacity to be a great local place, but it needs a little bit of time and effort to do so. “I’m really glad that this space is going to be rejuvenated, with new trees and improved spaces. It can be a place for all local residents to enjoy.” people really love their homes in Swinnow, so we have to make sure that the outside of the properties matches the inside. Getting the work on the gardens, garages, communal areas and car park completed means people will have a more welcoming and better place to live. “Seeing this come together has been really pleasing, especially as the Rycrofts High Rise Residents Association is now back up and running. We hope they will thrive and we look forward to continuing to work with them.” “Doing this work now will ensure we are making a great environment for people in the Rycrofts to live in.”

It’s hard to understand that thousands of local children live in real deprivation and are at risk of waking up on Christmas morning to nothing! This is only possible with the help of local businesses and the local community. Whitegates have joined forces

this year to help spread some Christmas cheer for those children who need it most. We launch this year’s Mission Christmas Campaign on Monday 16th November and we are aiming to make it the biggest appeal to date.
