FUNDING SECURED FOR GREAT GATE SAFETY! Councillors in Pudsey have managed to secure funding for further peace of mind for residents in Acres Hall Crescent. A small site of demolished garages on the side of Acres Hall Crescent had become a meeting place for people unknown to the local residents. Residents in the area were becoming concerned that illegal activities were
taking place with vehicles gathering in the space.
Councillor Josie Jarosz (Labour, Pudsey) said:
Local Councillors Richard Lewis, Mick Coulson and Josie Jarosz have been trying to resolve this for some time and now it looks like a solution is in sight. Funding has been provided by the Housing Advisory Panel for a gate to be placed at the front of the site, meaning people will not be able to access the site by car. The Councillors hope that this will stop people travelling by car to the site whilst allowing residents to carry on their daily lives.
“People living in Acres Hall Crescent have a right to feel safe in their homes- having this area open for anyone to drive in was making people feel unsafe. Putting this gate in place is a practical and fair way to ensure that people are not parking in this spot, for whatever reason. “Local people don’t use the area to park, so closing it off doesn’t reduce residents parking in the area. I look forward to seeing this work completed and local residents being able to feel more safe at home.”

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Calverley, Rodley, Stanningley, Farsley, Pudsey, Bramley and New Farnley areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to
show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MONOCHROME: BY AIREBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB Henry Ford once said about cars “You can have any colour you like as long as it is black”. This was also true for photography when it was first developed in 1839, except that the colour was shades of sepia not black and white and this monochrome dominated for many years. There were many experiments to produce colour photographs but it was not really until the 1950’s that colour film, ‘Kodachrome’ and ‘Afgacolour’ became available for the amateur but they were very expensive. Even in the 1960’s black and white was still the main type of film, colour though widely available was reserved for travel, holidays or special occasions. Now, colour photographs are the norm, everyone with a phone, tablet or any camera takes colour images. Black and white photographs are only used for artistic effect and the majority of people would not consider using it. Monochrome photography, as the name suggests, is taking a photograph so that the resulting image is in varying shades of just one colour, though this does not mean it has to be black and white, it can be any colour, it all depends on what effect is wanted. Sepia is a very popular colour as it imitates the original photographs. With the continuing development of sensors in our digital cameras giving more accurate reproduction of colours why would we want to take photographs in monochrome?
Black and white can give an image an ‘antique’ or ‘old fashioned’ look, this is especially true if you convert to sepia. Monochrome images depend “Louisiana Red’ - Chris Owens on shapes, shadows and lines and so composition and texture are emphasised. Themes, which benefit from this treatment, include winter landscapes, snow scenes, bare trees, vintage (Forties) events, steam trains, street photography, industrial photography and portraits. The monochrome effect creates drama and a moody image without the distraction of colour; this means the image is much more direct and immediate. It is always a good idea, if you have never tried monochrome before to take the same image in colour and in black and white and then compare them. Remember monochrome does not suit all images but some images have more impact in black and white. The coming months will give you plenty of opportunity to have a go at monochrome and the more you practise the more you will develop the skill, good luck. Chris Owens Aireborough Camera Club www. aireboroughcameraclub.co.uk
Everyone has a bit of the artist in them, we all have emotions and are affected by what we see, sometimes much more strongly than others. Monochrome is a powerful way in which emotionally charged images can be produced. Most digital equipment has the ability to take black and white images and all photo processing software will convert colour images into monochrome. It is always an advantage to take the shots in black and white so that you will not need to wait until you get back home to see the results. It is worth taking the time to find out how you can take monochrome/black and white images on your phone/tablet/camera. Sometimes it may be as simple as switching picture style/mode/control, colour mode or just reducing saturation/vividness. 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

FEEDING GARDEN BIRDS PART 2: WHEN TO FEED AND HOW TO ATTRACT DIFFERENT SPECIES I’m often asked when is the best time to feed birds and whether we should feed them throughout the year. This month we’ll focus on that topic and how you can attract more species to your garden. Once you’ve chosen to feed your garden birds, keep doing it. They will rely on you as a source of food. All you need to think about is the quantity to provide. At certain times of year, fewer birds will visit your garden and your food may remain uneaten. During these times, your birds are making the most of all the natural food that’s around. They need to utilise this while it’s available to vary their diet as much as possible. All you need to do is minimise the amount of food you put out and, if it remains uneaten, change this regularly to keep it fresh. The availability of this natural resource is weather dependent so, as soon as the weather changes, and the bird activity in your garden increases, that’s the time to top up your feeders. Watch the weather forecast with your birds in mind and adjust your feeding accordingly. Attracting more species to your garden requires a little research and some planning. Firstly, you’ll need to improve the natural food sources. Increase the amount of insect food available by planting nectar rich plants. Ivy is an excellent plant to have as it attracts insects very late in the year and provides shelter for spiders over winter. A compost bin provides a source of heat and an abundant food supply for insects. Even if you don’t need the compost, your birds will be able to benefit from the food it provides. Build an insect hotel out of old pallets, pipes, brushwood and bricks. Plant berry and fruit producing trees and shrubs. Provide water in your garden by building a pond or a bird bath. More insects will be able to breed here and you’ll be able to watch birds using it to bathe and drink. Providing this haven for wildlife may entice a new species into your garden during migration. 10 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Attracting more species to your garden requires a little research and some planning
This winter, check out your surrounding habitats. Leeds is surrounded by farmland, woodland, wetland and moorland. Learn about the species that live there, what they feed on and how they feed. During prolonged freezing conditions, or after a few snowy days, these birds will be looking for food and water and may pass over the city and your garden. Not all birds will visit hanging feeders so provide food on the ground for farmland birds and thrush species and try to keep some open water available. A few winters ago, a flock of skylarks landed in my garden in Leeds 4 during deep snow. They were desperately looking for grain on the ground and this is an easy thing to provide. Perhaps you might be able to entice a passing tree sparrow, yellowhammer or reed bunting to your garden this winter or, if you have berries, a fieldfare, redwing or waxwing. Let me know if you see anything unusual or send me photos to identify. In Part 3, we'll look at bird feeders and how to choose a good one for your garden. TOP WINES FOR CHRISTMAS It is the season to be jolly and as the season draws ever closer why not enjoy it with some different wines this Christmas. It’s the time of year to indulge in rich food, spend quality time with family and create special memories so whilst doing all of these things, allow us to suggest three special grape styles which you may not have tried before which marry perfectly with all the trimmings associated with this festive season.
BARBERA D’ASTI (RED):
GRENACHE BLANC (WHITE):
GEWÜRZTRAMINER (WHITE):
A native grape to Italy within the Piemonte region which lies in the North West of the country, Barbera d’Asti (literally translating to Barbera of Asti) is grown in abundance and finds itself in some of the finest wines that Italy creates. It is a lush, fruit driven grape style producing wines with ripe abundant flavours and often, with the help of some oak ageing, velvet roundness and firm tannin. It is the perfect accompaniment to red meat dishes such as Lamb and Beef; game dishes such as Venison, Partridge and hard cheeses. Our particular selection is ‘Rive’ made by Il Cascinone from the Piemonte region. A fine vineyard estate that allocates 60 of its 103 hectares to the growing of Barbera. This wine is bold, luscious and thoroughly enjoyable.
A grape grown all over the world but most famously in the French Rhône valley region, this is in interesting alternative to the more recognisable styles such as Sauvignon Blanc. It is often delicate which is why it lends itself to being paired with chicken and fish dishes both as an aperitif and main course wine. Our selection is a beautiful and well priced Rhône wine called ‘La Fleur Solitaire’ which boasts aromas of hedgerow fruits and a light palate of crisp acidity. It’s very drinkable indeed!
Christmas isn’t right without its indulgent puddings and a little known grape style which works perfectly is Gewürztraminer, grown famously in the Alsace region of France. This region, popular for its Ski resorts was once part of Germany therefore is populated by German styles of sweeter off dry wine styles. These types of wine although drunk on their own, do work perfectly with sweet indulgent deserts such as Crème Brule and fragrant cheeses such as Brie and goat’s cheese.

A CUT ABOVE by S-J Windridge-France
In a world where bad news seems to be prevalent, it’s wonderful to write a ‘feel good’ story inspired by a 7-year-old, my own little girl at that! After a trip to hospital visiting her poorly brother, my daughter, Scarlett, noticed two little girls on the same ward who had lost their hair through illness. Particularly concerned and having asked all the right questions, Scarlett decided that she’d like to have her own long hair cut off to help make these little girls ‘pretty again.’ After some research, I discovered The Little Princess Trust, a charity, who accept lengths of clean, healthy hair, to make real hair wigs for children suffering hair loss. Furthermore, as this is a free service, we decided to publicise and fundraise for the charity and have already raised in excess of £300! The lovely Wendy Bishop at Tranquility Day Spa
in Horsforth, offered to cut and style Scarlett’s hair (this being her first professional salon cut) and I’m sure you’ll agree that she looks fabulous with her new short ‘do.’ With the collection pot in the salon filling up and with funds slowly rising on the Justgiving site http://bit.ly/1FLvy59 we’re hoping to reach the £400 mark by the end of the month, maybe even more. We’re incredibly proud of Scarlett and hope in sharing this story it might inspire more hair donations for such a fabulous initiative. Please visit www.sjonlegs.com for more information and if you wish to donate to this very worthwhile cause.

NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACES Parents of children due to start primary school next September can now apply for their child’s place. Education bosses in Leeds are urging parents to make sure they apply before the deadline 15 January 2016, and pay close attention to the requirements when filling out the application form. Parents of children born between September 1 2011 and August 31 2012 must apply for a reception place between Sunday 1 November and Friday 15 January. Each year the admissions team at Leeds City Council receive thousands of applications for reception places. Last year they dealt with around 9850 applications. Previous years have shown that those who apply late have a 30% less chance of getting a preferred school place, which can be upsetting for both parents and children. To avoid this, Leeds City Council is urging families to submit their preferences as soon as possible before Friday 15 January. Parents are also being reminded that it is important to list five preferred schools, including
18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
the family’s nearest priority school to help improve the likelihood of being allocated a preferred school. To find out their nearest priority school or for any other help and advice parents can call the admissions team on 0113 2221414. The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at www.leeds.gov. uk/admissions. People who apply online will receive a confirmation email that their preferences have been received and as National Offer day falls on a weekend, will receive their offer by email on 18 April 2016. Parents can also apply using a paper form which is also available at www.leeds.gov.uk/ admissions. Parents using the paper form will have their offer letter sent out by second class post on 18 April so can expect to receive it a
few days later. Last year 415 applications for reception places were made late. Of those who applied late 159 were unable to be allocated any of their preferences because all of the places had already been filled. Only 62% of late applicants received one of their preferences compared to 94.5% of those who applied on time. Figures for admissions in September 2015 show the percentage of families offered their first preference was 85 per cent while the percentage offered one of their three preferences was 93 per cent. For more information about admissions visit www.leeds. gov.uk/admissions or call the admissions team on 0113 2224414.

COUNCILLORS SUPPORT SCHOOL EXPANSION IN PUDSEY
Councillor Josie Jarosz (Labour, Pudsey) said:
Councillors in Pudsey are supporting the plans to help meet the need for school places in the area. Following consultation with the local community, Greenside Primary School looks set to expand from 315 to 420 pupils. Councillor Josie Jarosz, Councillor Richard Lewis and Councillor Mick Coulson (Labour Pudsey) have been working to ensure that children from across the ward can have the best possible start to their education. They
“We want children to be able to go to good local schools, so we have to make sure that the needs in our area are met. Greenside is a great choice for a school expansion, it is a good school that local parents know and many love. My two sons attended the school so I know how good it is. “The proposed expansion will give local children a really good opportunity to learn and grow in the heart of Pudsey. “I hope that every effort is taken to make the design work for children and staff.”
FROEBELIAN SCHOOL UPDATE The Froebelian School is delighted to announce that it is ranked number 22 in the prestigious Sunday Times Parent Power national survey of the Top 100 Preparatory Schools. We are the highest ranked school in Leeds and Bradford and are still the only school from Leeds in the top 100. “We are so proud of our children,” said Catherine Dodds, Head Teacher. “This is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of not only the children and their teachers but also the whole school community who work together to foster a life-long thirst for learning.” Children at Froebelian start school the September after their third birthday, beginning their 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

education in the pre-school year. This gives them a flying start on their learning journey. The Froebelian School has maintained its place in the Top 100 ever since the Sunday Times began publishing
league tables over 20 years ago. The school, established in 1913, has a proud tradition of educating children to the highest standard; whilst maintaining the close knit family community feel that makes Froebelian so special.
No. 22 in the Sunday Times Top Independent School Listing The Froebelian School is a thriving and dynamic independent prep school, which places children at the very heart of all it strives to achieve.
• Excellent sport, music, drama and technology • Full wrap around care from 7.30 am to 6 pm • Excellent pupil staff ratio of 1:10

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
The details for this month’s activities depend very much on the weather, if the ground is wet and heavy – do not walk on it. So with that in mind, finish off your winter digging, forking over any bare areas of soil to expose any over wintering pest for the birds to clear. Empty your old compost bins, either digging it in or leaving it to the worms to do the hard work. Clear away as much garden debris as possible, to prevent harbouring slugs and snail over the winter. Have a final weeding session, to leave everything clear for the New Year. If you have an out of the way space, collect fallen leaves and place them in black plastic bags, punctured with drainage holes. Then leave them tied up for 18 to 24 months, when you will be rewarded with black gold. If your roses are still clinging on to their leaves, remove all of them and dispose of
them. This will stop any fungal diseases remaining on the soil, ready to infect your bushes new growth. Dahlias are still flowering, although now is the time to dig them up – even if they have not been blackened by frost. Cut the stalks to about 6”, and then turn them upside down in the dry for at least two weeks. Finally, box them up somewhere frost free in moist multipurpose compost . Complete the planting of all your bulbs, together with wall flowers, winter pansies etc, for a stunning display in the spring. If you like to have holly with berries on inside your house, remember to take the branches early and place them in a bucket of water to keep them fresh. The birds in my garden are devouring berries of all colours, despite seeds and fat balls placed nearby. There are a number of good colour shrubs for this time of year, witch hazel, coloured dogwoods, Viburnums, Mahonia, Christmas box and others. Give yourself an early Christmas present, which will make you smile year after year. Only buy poinsettias and other Christmas plants from indoor areas, where they have been well maintained.

LOCAL NEWS CALVERLEY & FARSLEY WARD COUNCILLORS’ COMMENTS The Councillors for Calverley & Farsley Ward are continuing to raise concerns about road safety because of the construction of the cycleway in Stanningley and on the A647 towards Bradford. Councillor Amanda Carter said: “We were all astonished that Leeds City Council and City Connect were proposing to remove the pedestrian crossing at Stanningley Bottom as part of the scheme. However we were more
K
concerned when they said it could be put back in if it was needed, presumably after there had been an accident. This was completely unacceptable and I am pleased to say they have now agreed to replace the zebra crossing and put another one in place further up towards the end of the viaduct.” Councillor Andrew Carter said: “There seems to be a complete disregard as well for the effect these works are having on local businesses and disruption to traffic for people trying to get to work. The whole scheme has been badly planned and
poorly executed. With little justification why it needs to be there at all. Is it safe for cyclists or motorists? I am afraid we all think not!” Councillor Rod Wood said: “The expense of this scheme is enormous. For a Council that is supposed to have no money, to invest over £10million of Council Tax payer’s money it is, quite frankly, unbelievable. That’s twice as much as the Council spends a year on road and footpath maintenance in its revenue budget!” Councillor Andrew Carter, CBE Councillor Amanda Carter Councillor Rod Wood
