WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 25 of Suburban Magazine. We got so carried away with things last month that we forgot to celebrate the second birthday of Suburban Magazine!

advertisers, contributors and readers. We are now working on edition 26 which will deadline 31st March 2017.

From our April edition, we would like to start giving a mention to upcoming local Spring/Summer Fairs. If you are organising a community event, please feel free to forward us the details and we will try and include a mention in the magazine. Really enjoyed looking at all the photos sent in last month for our funny/cute pet photos. We chose a local rescue centre (details further on in the magazine) to donate the funds to this month (£10 per pic printed). Hopefully the photo’s will keep coming in and we will choose another charity for next month’s donation.

SPRING VERSUS SURVIVAL AS SEASONS OVERLAP Late winter/early spring is always an interesting time to be out watching birds. There’s lots of different types of behaviour to observe and you may also be able to predict the weather systems to a certain degree. When the weather is warm and dry, birds can find enough food to maintain a good weight. They won’t lose a lot of fat during the night so, after a quick feed in the morning, our resident birds will sing to announce their new breeding territory and attract a mate. Some may have already paired up and you might have witnessed robins posturing to fend off rivals or the fluttering display flight of blue tits and wrens. It’s also possible to see birds checking out nesting sites or choosing nesting material. During warm weather our winter visitors will feed then, when their crops are full, they will sit in the sunshine and preen. Winter visitors will remain for a few weeks yet but, during warmer weather, their presence is not as well tolerated by our resident birds. Look out for scuffles in your garden as our resident blackbirds drive off the chunkier, visiting blackbirds. A visiting male will have a darker beak than a resident male which has a bright yellow beak. When a cold weather system is imminent, early breeding behaviour will stop. Survival is the priority once more and birds will begin to feed frantically to ingest enough calories. You’ll be able to observe this behaviour at your feeders and bird tables. Lots of activity before dusk indicates a cold night (and a good sign that your car windscreen will be iced over in the morning). You can really help by keeping your feeders full at this time and put out plenty of fat. The seed and berry supply is scarce in late winter and some birds may have to travel to find enough food to survive. You could get something interesting feeding in your garden so keep your eyes peeled and your binoculars close by. Think of all those waxwings I wrote about last time. Because we have a lot of waxwings and redwings in the country, our berry supply has plummeted. Those gentle waxwings have now turned into voracious swarms, stripping a whole tree of berries in a few hours the moving on to look for more food. If you know of any berries that haven’t been eaten, then watch

them like a hawk! The probability is increasing that waxwings will turn up there in the next few weeks. Our winter migrants will eventually begin to gather and travel northwards and eastwards towards our coasts. Once they can be sure that enough food will be available at their breeding grounds, they will take advantage of a southerly wind and cross the sea to places such as Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and Northern Russia. Weather conditions will determine the timing of their departure and they may delay this journey until well into April. This means that we have a few weeks when it is possible to find both winter and spring visitors in the UK. Before our winter visitors depart, a convenient southerly breeze will bring us the stuttering, metallic sound of our first warbler, the chiffchaff, singing high on exposed branches. Other early spring migrants include wheatear, ring ouzel and sand martin. Look out for sand martins arriving at the artificial sand martin bank at Rodley Nature Reserve at the beginning of March. Other spring migrants will follow in quick succession and we’ll talk about them next time. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. LIZ AND PHIL’S FURRY-TAIL ENDING You may remember in last month’s magazine we told you of Lurchers Liz and Phil who had been found separately as strays and fell in love when they both arrived at Dogs Trust Leeds. As we went to press, Liz had found her furry-tail ending but Phil was still waiting. We are happy to say Phil has now also headed off to his forever home and is settling in well.

Mishka and Darren are both hoping to find love like Lara very soon.

Dog abandoned on Valentine’s Day finds love A dog found tied to a park gate on Valentine’s Day with a note around her neck has found love again thanks to Dogs Trust Leeds. The one-year-old Crossbreed, who was found abandoned in East End Park with a note saying simply ‘I am Lara’, was taken to the Rehoming Centre as the most romantic day of the year drew to a close. Amanda Sands, Rehoming Centre Manager at the York Road Rehoming Centre, says: “Sometimes owners can no longer keep their dog for unavoidable reasons such as a change in working hours, a relationship breakup or a death in the family and of course it’s really sad for them and the dog. But we would urge anyone who can no longer look after their dog to never abandon 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

It puts them at risk and through unnecessary stress.” Lara was picked up by the dog warden and taken to Dogs Trust Leeds where she received lots of TLC whilst she waited for her special someone to come along. A week after she was found the team were delighted when Sita and Graham Brand fell in love with her and she headed off with her new owners. The Siberian Husky is a working breed that was originally used for long distance sled hauling and it is recommended that they have at least two hours a day of exercise, so Dogs Trust Leeds is looking for owners who enjoy getting out and about. The two will also require lots of grooming so if you like to pamper your pooch, they could be the dogs for you! Both are happy around other dogs and could live with older children. They would benefit from further training to keep their brains busy. If you think this handsome two-some could be the canine company you are searching for, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. OTLEY’S COMMUNITY AWARD 2016 /17 Having entertained the communities of Wharfedale for more than thirty years the Wharfedale Male Voice Choir were in much need of a new keyboard that could provide accompaniment for the choir's singing and pleasure of their audiences. In recent times it has not always been possible to rely on the pianos available at many of the venues where the choir are called upon to sing, and their own keyboard eventually proved not to be up to the task! Enter Otley Town Council whose Community Development Committee in supporting causes that are beneficial to the local community provided a grant from their Community

UNCOVERING OTLEY’S HIDDEN HISTORY By Alex Colquhoun

Today Otley might be a thriving market town, full of independent shops, great pubs and excellent tearooms, but its history goes back to the Neolithic era and the town has helped shape British society ever since. Rock star Otley Otley Chevin plays host to some of the oldest prehistoric art in the country in the form of the Knotties Stone – a rock with ancient carvings that come to life when doused in water. Rock from the Chevin also has another claim to fame, given the very foundations of our democracy have their roots. It’s said that stone quarried from the hill was used to help building the Palace of Westminster, home to the Houses of Parliament that make our laws. See it today: Park up at the East Chevin Quarry car park to start a walk around this amazing natural landscape. Leaflets, maps and audio trails can be downloaded from chevinforest.co.uk. Romantic art In the late-18th century, Otley was frequently visited by J.M.W. Turner. The famed English Romanticist painter used Wharfedale and the Chevin as inspiration for and backdrop to many of his most famous works. While in the area, he would reside at Farnley Hall, just outside Otley and home to the local branch of the famed Fawkes family. See it today: Farnley Hall has a fine collection of Turner originals that can be seen on private visits. Tours are on request and by subsequent invitation. They require a minimum of 20 participants paying £10 each. See farnleyhall.co.uk Printing power One of the original modern printing 12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

presses, the Wharfedale, was developed in Otley by William Dawson and David Payne in the mid-19th century. It revolutionised a printing industry that had seen little progress since Gutenberg printed his famous bible on a wooden press in Germany in 1454. Otley soon became the printing centre of Britain as the new press could print 800 times an hour. See it today: There’s a stone sculpture of a Wharfedale press by local artist Shane Green in Wharfemeadows Park, Otley. If you want to make your own, personalised prints, coffee shop Bloomfield Square has a traditional letterpress print shop offering courses in various print styles. See facebook.com/pg/ Bloomfieldsquare/about/. Bully for the pubs The Black Bull in the Market Square is said to be the oldest pub in Otley, as well as being the venue that housed Oliver Cromwell’s

troops before the Battle of Marston Moor during the English Civil War. Allegedly, Cromwell’s troops drank the inn dry before going into the July 1644 battle – a battle they went on to win, bringing Royalist rule to an end in the north. See it today: The Black Bull still stands – as well as 19 other pubs in to town. Rumours of the Cromwell victory obviously spread far and wide and, combined with relaxed laws in market towns, Otley’s pubs flourished. See otleypubclub.co.uk The first style mag The art of interior design may have been totally different if one of Otley’s most famous residents had never been born. Thomas Chippendale came into the world in 1718 and attended the Old Grammar School before moving to London in 1748. It was there that he became one of the most famous furniture designers in the world, publishing the celebrated Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director – ostensibly one of the world’s first and most successful design books. See it today: Chippendale’s statue stands in Manor Square in Otley – and the Old Grammar School still stands, now as the Stew & Oyster pub! “COUNCIL SHOULD HAVE BACKED OUR BROWN BIN PLAN” As I write this, the Council has just set its budget for the coming financial year. Everyone knows the funding situation is tight, but it’s also true that councils still have choices over where they make savings or prioritise investment. This is what the annual budget meeting is all about: the ruling administration puts forward their proposals and opposition groups suggest amendments, areas where we would spend the money differently. It’s one of the most important meetings of the year because it has a direct result on the number and

quality of services we’ll all see in our communities over the next 12 months and beyond. My group submitted 12 different amendments, one of which was a proposal to extend brown bin collections to a further 45,000 properties city-wide. At the moment the system is unfair, with many areas missing out, even though they might produce a lot of garden waste. We would have paid for the extension by making more efficiencies in back-office IT, as well as reducing the amount that goes from the public purse to support trade union convenors. Other proposals included reversing the cuts to the wellbeing budget (the funding that goes to the Outer North West

THE

Community Committee, and others, for community projects), boosting funding for neighbourhood networks and older people’s care, and reversing the planned parking charge increases. Sadly all our proposals were voted down. It’s a shame, because in the case of the brown bin plan in particular, I think the council should have backed it. But our proposals have at least got people thinking about some of the alternatives on offer. Who knows – some of these ideas may end up working their way into the council’s plans in future years. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Guiseley, Otley, Menston, Yeadon, Rawdon and Apperley Bridge areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little

bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A power of attorney is a legal document that allows someone to make decisions for you, or act on your behalf, if you’re no longer able to or if you no longer want to make your own decisions. MANNING STAINTON RAISES £25,000 FOR MACMILLAN IN 2016 Manning Stainton has announced that its ‘Mannings for Macmillan 2016’ initiative for cancer charity Macmillan Cancer Support raised £25,000. Colleagues from the company’s network of 19 Sales and Lettings offices across West and North Yorkshire staged and participated in a variety of fundraising events throughout the year including the Knaresborough Bed Race and Paint Leeds Green. It is the third time the area’s leading estate agent has chosen Macmillan as the main focus of its annual fundraising, generating in total over £160,000. The money has been used to fund a specialist Breast Cancer Nurse at St James’s Hospital in Leeds.

Mark Manning, Managing Director at Manning Stainton, says: ‘I am immensely proud of the way the entire company, as well as family, friends and our contacts in the local business community have wholeheartedly supported our fundraising effort. ‘Cancer affects far too many people, including those nearest to us, which is why I believe there is such a willingness to support the wonderful work Macmillan does.’

SUBURBAN GARDENS

SUBURBAN GARDENS

With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

March is full of madness, like the weather and your activity requirements. So, if the weather is warm, it all starts now, if not hesitate on the starting blocks until it cheers up. The true colour of spring is starting to arrive, with stunning crocus, early daffodils and many other spring bulbs. Once the early flowering shrubs have finished their display, give them a good trim to maintain their shape ready for next year. Also, divide snow drops in the green after flowering, if you want to spread them more around the garden.

with parsnips, turnips, swedes, leeks, onions and broad beans all okay for warm conditions. This also includes early potatoes, which have been sprouted inside. If you have the facilities, start your broccoli, cabbages, brussel sprouts, cauliflower etc under cover, ready for planting out after the last frost. Finally, refresh your permanent outdoor pots – scraping off the top 2 inches of soil and replenishing it, together with an addition of a slow release fertiliser.

Onto the borders, give them a good spring clean – dig up and divide any perennials that have spread too far, or are very woody in the centre. Finish any pruning and cutting back, and then insert any new plants or pots of bulbs. Enjoy planting gladioli, lilies and other summer bulbs for a colourful display. Finally, top dress the beds with a good general fertiliser, and wait for the stunning results. On the spring clean front, have a go at the weeds and moss on the drive and surrounding paths. When the lawn is dry, look at aerating and scarifying the surface. Then apply a spring lawn fertiliser, if necessary with weed and moss control additives. If you have some bare patches, leave these for 10 days after the above applications, then sow new grass seed to match the existing grass. This will start the grass growing, so when it reaches 3 inches, start to mow with the blades relatively high, and then lower them as the season progresses.

YEADON SAILING CLUB Sailing's a great sport, and Yeadon Sailing Club is the place to learn and to sail. Situated in Tarnfield Park off Yeadon High Street, the Club offers racing and training for adults, children and families, with social activities throughout the year. We're known as a friendly club - there's good competition for those who want it, but after the race, our sailors are more than happy to share advice and tips with each other and especially with newcomers. Our season starts in March, so if you're in Tarnfield Park, pop in for a chat.

back from the Mediterranean.

In summer we run three racing sessions a week - Wednesday evening, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with prizes at the end of the season for winners on all days. Our Tuesday night training sessions are popular, both with people new to sailing and those returning after a break. Late

Saturday afternoons we have 'Social Sailing' sessions, when people can just come along and sail - we're on hand to help if you want, but generally its very informal. Sometimes families bring fish & chips or a barbeque to make an evening of it. National and international champions have started out at Yeadon SC. Others have gone on to work professionally in sailing, skippering boats around the world, competed in the Round the Island Race - the biggest yacht race in the world round the Isle of Wight, or just helped mates bring a boat 26 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

People think sailing is expensive, but as with all hobbies, you can spend what you like on it. Some members bought their first boat for £50, sailed it for a few years and sold it for the same amount. When you become a member, Yeadon Sailing Club has a range of different boats you use until you get your own - it’s a great way to see which type of boat suits you best. At Yeadon SC we have a £5 initial Come and Try fee, and membership fees starting from under £30 (juniors), so what's not to like? The clubhouse itself was built in the early 1960's and needs replacing. We have long term plans for a new clubhouse, and in the meantime, we're renovating the interior into a dynamic and exciting space for sailors and sailing - see next month's edition of Suburban for up to date photos of our new interior. www.yeaadonsailingclub.co.uk Twitter: @yeadonsailing Facebook: @yeadonsc
