WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 26 of Suburban Magazine. I will start this month by apologising to any parents that had to explain the spelling differences to their children in our puzzle last month. As a reader quite rightly pointed out to me, I had used an American puzzle with a few words spelt differently. l had not given that a thought and had obviously not noticed but, I will be very careful from now on to watch out for that!

THE GREAT AVIAN EXCHANGE Over the next few weeks birdwatchers across the UK will be witnessing an avian exchange of epic proportions. Thousands of winter visitors including redwing, waxwing, brambling, swans, geese, ducks and waders will leave our shores to be replaced by spring migrants; many from as far away as Africa. The British countryside will be filled with the long-awaited sounds of swallows and martins, warblers, cuckoos and screaming swifts. Resident waders, such as curlew and lapwing, will move to grassland and moorland habitats to raise their young and our coastlines will once again play host to thousands of seabirds. Many have already arrived. Of course, it’s not always possible to take a trip to the coast or to the Yorkshire Dales so here are some places you can visit close to home to watch the winter departure and the arrival of our spring migrants. I’m using the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the River Aire to mark a linear route from Kirkstall to Calverley. Resident birds include grey wagtail, dipper, kingfisher, great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper and there are lots of warbler species in the spring and summer including blackcap, willow warbler, chiffchaff, whitethroat and garden warbler. 1.

Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve: Accessed from the Leeds Liverpool Canal or from Redcote Lane, this Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve is nestled between the canal and the River Aire. Look for water birds on the river, resident woodland birds and visiting warblers. Kirkstall Goit: Footpaths off Commercial Road, on the other side of the river, lead down towards a tributary of the River Aire and overflow channels. Good for resident birds, warblers and dragonflies. Kirkstall Abbey: Just past the shopping area, off Bridge Road, you’ll find a path near the cenotaph that leads to the grounds of the Abbey. Follow the beck and you’ll find yourself at the weir on the River Aire. You can follow the river for a short section to look for water and woodland birds, swallow and martins. Hawksworth Wood, Little Hawksworth Wood and Newlay Wood: You’ll find these beautiful woods a little way up the A65 towards Horsforth. The Hawksworth woods are opposite the entrance to the new Kirkstall railway station, straddling Hawksworth Road. Newlay Wood is on the same side as the railway station down Rein Road towards the River Aire. Look for woodland birds, warblers and water birds on Oil Mill Beck and the river. This path leads over the river bridge and back up to the canal.

Hollybush Conservation Centre: Pop into Hollybush for breakfast or a midday snack and look for birds in their garden before setting off down the canal towards Bramley. Watch for soaring red kite, buzzard and sparrowhawk above the valley. Canal walking: Scan the fields along the canal for skylark and lapwing and you may find heron, moorhen, mallard, reed bunting and Canada goose along the canal. The hedgerows and scrubland are home to visiting warbler species such as whitethroat, garden warbler and blackcap. Check out the lock overflow for grey wagtail and get close views of the River Aire from the tow path here. The bend provides calmer water and creates suitable feeding habitat for kingfisher, goosander, mallard and tufted duck. Bramley Falls Wood and station paths: At the first canal locks, climb the steps into this wonderful mature woodland which is home to jay, bullfinch, song thrush, goldcrest, nuthatch, treecreeper, wren and great spotted woodpecker. Listen out for your first spring migrant, the chiffchaff, singing high up in a tree. Exit the wood at the next locks and loop around the walkways to the station for more warbler species. Rodley Nature Reserve: On Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays you can visit this avian airport and tie in any of the sites mentioned so far. Check the fields for the last of the winter thrushes and look for the newly arrived swallow and sand martin. Finish your visit with coffee and cake at the visitor centre. Calverley Woods: Though adjacent to the canal, this wood is best accessed from Thornhill Drive. Here, in addition to great-spotted woodpecker, nuthatch, jay, treecreeper and goldcrest, you might be able to hear migrant blackcap singing.

WRITING ON THE WHARFE
ON THE PATHOS OF OLD AGE
Suburban Magazine are really pleased to say that for the next few editions (and maybe more), ‘Writing on the Wharfe’ group have agreed to provide a variety of short stories and poems for us to enjoy. The topics and styles will be varied as they will be provided by different members but will always be appropriate for readers of all ages. We hope that you enjoy reading these over the coming months and welcome your feedback. 10TH DRAGON BOAT RACE FOR LOCAL HOSPICE On 21st May, Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People will be holding its annual Dragon Boat Race at Roundhay Park, Leeds. The much-anticipated event saw over 400 rowers compete last year, with Restaurant Bar and Grill, Leeds, outracing the rest to claim the coveted winners’ trophy. Now in its tenth year, the Martin House Dragon Boat Race is a unique teambuilding event and family fun day that helps to support hundreds of children and young people across the region. Join us this year as we celebrate 30 years of hospice care in 2017 and enjoy an oar-some day out with family and friends. The Dragon Boat Race has had nine successful years in Leeds and since 2008 has raised over £345,000 for families across West, North and East Yorkshire. Last year, 42 crews representing 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
groups and businesses from across the region, competed against each other over a 200m racecourse on Waterloo Lake. This year will incorporate a family fun day with rides, entertainment and refreshments for spectators. Since 1987, Martin House has provided family-led care for children and young people with life-limiting illnesses. With little government funding and over £6 million needed to provide our services, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to ensure we can meet the needs of our families. With help from our local community, we can support families at our hospice, in hospital and in their own homes for the next thirty years and beyond. Those interested in booking for next year’s 10th Anniversary Dragon Boat Race can contact the events team on 01937 844569 or events@martinhouse.org.uk.

Old man, drowsing, wrapt in dreams Of callow triumphs, mighty teens; And as he drowns in memory flow Of glowing conquests long ago, The loves he hardly won, long waned, Life’s surging juice is wholly drained. He sits alone in wizening sun, Awaits the day when all is done; Ponders anew farvanished fun, And muses that, from life begun In mighty, towering optimum, He’s now reduced to comment glum With scarcely strength to scratch his bum.
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Oakwood and Meanwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the
personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show
how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THE VITAL ROLE LOCAL BUSINESSES PLAY IN THEIR COMMUNITIES The 3rd Meanwood Festival takes place between 20th and 29th May with over 50 different events taking place in 20 locations around the area. For the volunteer organisers it’s a logistical and financial challenge and one that couldn’t be met without the generosity of local business sponsors. But why do they do it? An event like the Festival really brings the community together, showcasing the varied and interesting activities that happen in the area. But of course that’s not the only reason businesses want to get involved. Many realise it makes good business sense to get their brands promoted in the community and associated with a positive feel good event. Owner of Top Stitch, David Stevens explains ‘Last years Festival coincided with us opening our new shop. Sponsoring the Festival gave us a great platform to get our name out there and it really helped us get off to a flying start’. Meanwood’s newly opened first (and only) sushi bar Hana Matsuri, and the Meanwood Park Cafe are sponsors for the same reason. Moores Estate Agents, although not based in Meanwood, also recognise its benefits. Hayley Moore states ‘We’re a family run, independent local business, so connecting with local residents and supporting our local community is vitally important to us. Sponsoring an event like the Festival really helps us engage with and get to know the community we work in, which is why we’ve been a sponsor for the last 3 years’. Hayley is also ‘Moore than an estate agent’ as she is now an active member of the Festival organising team. Other businesses like QLM, Ace Cars, Moustache Barbers and Alan Cooke, see
12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
sponsorship as a way of celebrating their time serving the people of Meanwood. Maurice Esofsky states ‘ This year we (QLM) celebrate our 20th Anniversary trading in Meanwood. It’s great to be able to give something back as a thank you to the people of Meanwood for their support over the years’. Pubs and bars are the social hub of the community and are keen to get involved in the fun, hosting Festival events as well as financially supporting it. Alfred, East of Arcadia, The Bay Horse and the Myrtle Tavern are all heavily involved. ‘We like to connect with local people and other businesses which in turn benefits us all’ says Harriet Earl from Alfred Bar. ‘Sponsoring and organising Festival events gives us a great opportunity to do that’. Scott Westlake, Landlord of the Myrtle Tavern, a CAMRA Community Pub of the Year Winner agrees. ‘The Festival Fun Day is the biggest event in Meanwood, bringing all sections of the community together. We’re very happy to donate our time and money to making it the huge success it has become’ Other businesses like Estate Agents Manning Stainton and builders RDF see community involvement as part of their corporate social responsibility, putting something back into the communities in which they operate. But for whatever reasons businesses get involved, we’re very grateful that they do. David Stevens sums it up best. ‘I’ve lived in and around Meanwood all my life and when I was growing up I saw what we as a community were able to achieve, raising funds to renovate and improve the local school - now recognised as one of the best in the UK. The Festival is a chance to show off Meanwood, be proud of its spirit and the amazing community we have here. Why wouldn’t you want to contribute to that?’ Article submitted by Chris Swales, Meanwood Festival Organiser. The Meanwood Festival runs from Saturday 20th - Monday 29th May. EMACIATED DOG ABANDONED IN FIELD IN POURING RAIN FINDS FOREVER HOME An emaciated dog that was found shivering and soaking wet in the pouring rain in a muddy field has found her ‘furrytail’ ending after heading off to her forever home The young Lurcher had been spotted by a member of the public just before 11pm in a field in Gildersome. She was taken to Dogs Trust Leeds by the dog warden and just days later, having read about her ordeal, Bianca Scollen and her family headed to the York Road rehoming centre and decided she was the dog for them. Bianca, from Whinmoor, said: "Our previous dog, Tilly, was a rescue dog and we had her for 15 happy years, but sadly she passed away last April. When we saw the newspaper article about Rain, the time felt right for us to give another dog a loving home. “When we heard about what Rain had gone through, it was heart breaking and we really hoped we could be the ones who could give her the life she and all dogs deserve." Now the one-year-old, who the rehoming centre team 14 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
say had already had at least one litter of puppies, has been renamed Lola by her owners, and is settling into her new life and her cheeky personality is beginning to show. Bianca says: "We love her to bits. She is slowly putting on weight and the pressure sores and scars on her body are healing well. She is loving her walks, likes to cuddle up on the sofa with us and is becoming really playful. She is understandably still a little nervous in certain situations but is growing in confidence each day and is an absolute delight." Amanda Sands, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Leeds, said:
"She was in such a state when she was brought to us, very frightened and timid which is no surprise given she obviously hasn't been looked after for some time. It's always shocking when a dog arrives in such a state. The fact that she is now recovering both physically and emotionally and starting to enjoy life thanks to Bianca, Craig and Dakota is just brilliant. We couldn't have asked for a happier ending." To find out more about any of the homeless hounds looking for love at the centre, please call 0300 303 0292 or visit her at Dogs Trust Leeds, Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. COMMUKNITY RALLIES ROUND! Hope Pastures, the pony sanctuary in Weetwood, has been selected as the Official Charity for Bramham Horse Trials, a prestigious local event in June. “This is a once-in-alifetime opportunity for us,” commented Kim Pengelly, fundraiser, “And we’re very excited.” In the run-up to the event, the sanctuary has asked volunteers to help by knitting some of their famous knitted ponies, so they can be sold at Bramham to raise funds. “The response has been 16 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
incredible,” Kim added, “I’ve been sending out patterns at 2am! We’ve legs knitted by 9 year olds and our oldest knitter is 94. The ponies are 're-homed' by children and adults alike - there are about
60,000 visitors to Bramham, so we need a large herd.” If you can help, email kim@ hopepastures.org or phone 0113 261 4344 for a pattern.

LOCAL NEWS ALWOODLEY REVIEW
SUBURBAN SERVICES
Cllr Neil Buckley – Alwoodley Ward
Do you offer a service to local people? Don’t keep it to yourself tell our 1000’s of readers and serve them well
Thank you for the letters and e-mails about the speed limits and speed measures that are being suggested for Alwoodley. The general reaction seems to be that 80% of people are in favour of the speed limits but 80% are not happy with the idea of speed bumps or cushions or tables across the road. We are still interested in your opinions and we shall pass them on to Highways. I would also like opinions on the next Big Highways Plan. This affects the Ring Road from just south of Shadwell Lane, where it touches Roundhay Park. There would be a roundabout there which would be the start of a massive new road, looping across north east Leeds, across the green fields near Red Hall and across both Wetherby Road and York Road, to meet the M1 near Sainsbury’s at Colton. The existing ring road would then be converted to a less important, presumably quieter, local road, for suburban traffic from our part of Leeds to Whinmoor and Cross Gates. Thoughts, please. Less controversially, I thank all the people who planted the tens of thousands of crocuses and daffodils that are now so magnificent on Harrogate Road, King Lane, Wike Ridge Lane, and a dozen other roads. Much of this is due to the efforts of Alwoodley in Bloom, Alwoodley Parish Council and Slaid Hill in Bloom but some of it is private initiative (some brilliant ones on Alwoodley Lane) and we are grateful to all concerned. They are symbols of hope and optimism; another Summer is coming.

WESTWARD CARE RELEASE FINAL PHASE OF APARTMENTS IN ROUNDHAY Only five luxury apartments remain following £3.5 million investment in the development Westward Care, one of Leeds’ most trusted providers of tailored living and social care for older people have announced that the final phase of development at their Southlands location is complete, representing the end of a £3.5 million investment at the iconic location. Based in Roundhay, a limited number of the award-winning, luxury apartments remain at Southlands. The investment comes as the company continues to develop high-quality care homes and apartments, transforming the lives of older people with person-centred care and convenient, flexible living arrangements to offer each individual resident peace of mind. SUBURBAN GARDENS
SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
April showers will bring May flowers, together with lots of exiting new growth. The seeds you have sown, or starting, will soon have little green shoots and a promise of things to come. The garden soil temperatures are very unpredictable, so do not plant out anything which may be spoilt by cold soil or frost. This month is the usual time for planting early and second early potatoes, which have been sprouted indoors. Make a deep planting drill dusted with fertiliser, and then bring the soil into a mound on the top. Keep an eye out for the foliage pushing through the soil, and be ready to protect this with extra soil if frost is forecast.
with a hoe, and sowing them into the drills. This will not only look colourful, it will also reduce any bare soil for weeds to invade.
Indoors, have a go at growing tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies etc, as they all need a long season to crop successfully. These plants then may stay indoors, or be planted out in the garden or pots in late May. The taste of fresh home grown fruit and veg is wonderful, and well worth the effort. The same goes for pots of herbs, mint, basil, rosemary and many others, as the smell will lift your spirits enormously.
As your bulbs start to go over, remember to give them a good feed for the next few weeks, to build them up for next year. If the clumps are very large, and not flowering very well, split them up after the foliage has died down to rejuvenate them.

Lawns should be mown regularly as the grass starts to grow, and if possible the cuttings should be composted with a good mix of crumpled newspaper, broken egg boxes and kitchen/garden waste. It is 13:53 to start a compost heap now, ready good to use the material as mulch next year.
