ALWOODLEY REVIEW

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Charles Dobbin is retiring and I wish to embarrass him a little before he goes. For those who don’t know Charles (and there won’t be many) he is the Church of England’s Man at St John’s and for years he has been a valuable pillar of the community life of Alwoodley. He has been the epitome of an imperturbable, generous and thoughtful pastor with an oldfashioned style and manner.

As the weather gets colder and thoughts turn to Christmas and all the New Year will bring, we wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and hope that you all have a very relaxing and enjoyable time with friends and family over the festive period.

Which would be enough in itself to make him outstanding and memorable, but in in recent years Charles has been a community leader in a way that old-fashioned pastors have not traditionally had to study. The jargon for this is ‘inter-faith relationships’ and it means in practice the friendship that is ever more valuable between the religions of north Leeds. The miserable events in France last month remind us of the need for men and women of different faiths to keep talking to each other. In Alwoodley, we do. It is no use waiting for events like the Paris murders to start conversations between members of different religions – it has to be done as matter of day-to-day activity, not as a reaction. This is not to say that there will not be tensions in future in Alwoodley – there have in the past and we cannot be sure these will not return – but everything possible is in place in north Leeds to make it unlikely and for that we have to thank Charles. We shall miss him. Cllr.Neil Buckley Alwoodley Ward (Conservative)

It is lovely to see the community transformed with trees, lights and decorations really bringing the season to life. We would like to thank all of the community groups and volunteers who work so hard all year round to ensure our area of Leeds is such a fantastic place to live and work. It has been another extremely busy year but we have really enjoyed representing you all and speaking to so many of you over the course of the year. We are very lucky to represent such a diverse and vibrant area of the city and we look forward to next year being just as fulfilling and varied. We would also like to just remind everyone to please look at the Council website to check your bin collection dates over the Christmas period as they may be different to usual. With best wishes, Councillors Alex Sobel, Sharon Hamilton and Rebecca Charlwood

MONOCHROME: BY AIREBOROUGH CAMERA CLUB Henry Ford once said about cars “You can have any colour you like as long as it is black”. This was also true for photography when it was first developed in 1839, except that the colour was shades of sepia not black and white and this monochrome dominated for many years. There were many experiments to produce colour photographs but it was not really until the 1950’s that colour film, ‘Kodachrome’ and ‘Afgacolour’ became available for the amateur but they were very expensive. Even in the 1960’s black and white was still the main type of film, colour though widely available was reserved for travel, holidays or special occasions. Now, colour photographs are the norm, everyone with a phone, tablet or any camera takes colour images. Black and white photographs are only used for artistic effect and the majority of people would not consider using it. Monochrome photography, as the name suggests, is taking a photograph so that the resulting image is in varying shades of just one colour, though this does not mean it has to be black and white, it can be any colour, it all depends on what effect is wanted. Sepia is a very popular colour as it imitates the original photographs. With the continuing development of sensors in our digital cameras giving more accurate reproduction of colours why would we want to take photographs in monochrome?

Black and white can give an image an ‘antique’ or ‘old fashioned’ look, this is especially true if you convert to sepia. Monochrome images “Louisiana Red’ - Chris Owens depend on shapes, shadows and lines and so composition and texture are emphasised. Themes, which benefit from this treatment, include winter landscapes, snow scenes, bare trees, vintage (Forties) events, steam trains, street photography, industrial photography and portraits. The monochrome effect creates drama and a moody image without the distraction of colour; this means the image is much more direct and immediate. It is always a good idea, if you have never tried monochrome before to take the same image in colour and in black and white and then compare them. Remember monochrome does not suit all images but some images have more impact in black and white. The coming months will give you plenty of opportunity to have a go at monochrome and the more you practise the more you will develop the skill, good luck. Chris Owens Aireborough Camera Club www. aireboroughcameraclub.co.uk

Everyone has a bit of the artist in them, we all have emotions and are affected by what we see, sometimes much more strongly than others. Monochrome is a powerful way in which emotionally charged images can be produced. Most digital equipment has the ability to take black and white images and all photo processing software will convert colour images into monochrome. It is always an advantage to take the shots in black and white so that you will not need to wait until you get back home to see the results. It is worth taking the time to find out how you can take monochrome/black and white images on your phone/tablet/camera. Sometimes it may be as simple as switching picture style/mode/control, colour mode or just reducing saturation/vividness. 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Meanwood and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show

how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LOCAL NEWS NOW IS THE TIME TO APPLY FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL PLACES Parents of children due to start primary school next September can now apply for their child’s place. Education bosses in Leeds are urging parents to make sure they apply before the deadline 15 January 2016, and pay close attention to the requirements when filling out the application form. Parents of children born between September 1 2011 and August 31 2012 must apply for a reception place between Sunday 1 November and Friday 15 January. Each year the admissions team at Leeds City Council receive thousands of applications for reception places. Last year they dealt with around 9850 applications. Previous years have shown that those who apply late have a 30% less chance of getting a preferred school

place, which can be upsetting for both parents and children. To avoid this, Leeds City Council is urging families to submit their preferences as soon as possible before Friday 15 January. Parents are also being reminded that it is important to list five preferred schools, including the family’s nearest priority school to help improve the likelihood of being allocated a preferred school. To find out their nearest priority school or for any other help and advice parents can call the admissions team on 0113 2221414. The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at www.leeds. gov.uk/admissions. People who apply online will receive a confirmation email that their preferences have been received and as National Offer day falls on a weekend, will receive their offer by email on 18 April 2016. Parents can also apply using a paper form

which is also available at www.leeds.gov.uk/ admissions. Parents using the paper form will have their offer letter sent out by second class post on 18 April so can expect to receive it a few days later. Last year 415 applications for reception places were made late. Of those who applied late 159 were unable to be allocated any of their preferences because all of the places had already been filled. Only 62% of late applicants received one of their preferences compared to 94.5% of those who applied on time. Figures for admissions in September 2015 show the percentage of families offered their first preference was 85 per cent while the percentage offered one of their three preferences was 93 per cent. For more information about admissions visit www.leeds. gov.uk/admissions or call the admissions team on 0113 2224414.

LOCAL NEWS MEANWOOD AT CHRISTMAS Meanwood had a lovely start to its seasonal festivities on Monday 23rd November with the switch on of its Christmas lights. Despite the cold and blustery showers, the switch on was the best attended yet and although the lights are small, they are perfectly formed. Organised by the Meanwood Valley Partnership, many others were involved in making it a fun community event for children and adults alike. Waitrose provided the space outside their store as

well as some delicious mince pies, Transition Meanwood provided the very welcome warm mulled apple juice, the choir from England’s best state primary school, Meanwood C of E sang beautifully and the kids were treated to a surprise visit from Olaf the snowman and Peppa Pig courtesy of Jolly Tots. Local resident Karen Waddington said ‘Everyone had such a lovely time and it’s so nice hearing the children singing. The smaller children were mesmerised by Olaf and Peppa. It was great. Grateful thanks go to the Councillors and Leeds

SHORT STORIES

CHAPTER THREE: THE WORST DAY

were. The door was open so we went in because it was our house anyway so why should we knock?

Written by Alison Craven (extract from an un-published novel)

A man was there wallpapering the downstairs room and it looked really lovely. We’d chosen an ever so with-it pattern in brown and orange swirly swirls to match the new three piece.

Miss said I could read my story out to the whole class because I had a very vivid imagination. I had to stand in front of the blackboard next to her desk. My story was about a girl whose mam had just been given a brand new house with underfloor heating and an inside lavvy and the mam’s friend had a catalogue. She let the mam and the girl chose loads of new stuff for their new house from the catalogue and they didn’t even have to pay one penny for it because the lady with the catalogue, who was called Joan, had gone to live in Australia and Empire Stores would never send a mister all the way to Australia to get the money. When I’d finished everybody clapped and Miss said, ‘Well done, Susan.’ I was just like the queen bee in the hive. At playtime Carol Ingham came up to me and said that her mam got stuff from Aunty Joan’s catalogue as well and that she never even told them she was going to Australia. She said her mam would be really mad because she was going to order a Teasmade. I’ve never heard of a Teasmade whatever, they are, and I don’t think Aunty Joan’s catalogue would have them, so I think she was lying. Me and our Linda decided to go see the new house on our way home from school. We ran like billie-o, so mam wouldn’t worry where we

18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

We ran out and laughed all the way home. ---------

The man looked a bit mad and said, ‘What do you to want? You should knock, you know.’ Our Linda said, ‘You should knock, you know, because this is our new house. So there!’ I squeezed our Linda’s arm and told her to stop being so cheeky. She pulled away and stood there all cocky with her chin sticking out. ‘Sorry about her,’ I said, ‘she doesn’t mean to be rude, it just comes out of her gob like fresh air. It looks really, really nice and my Mam will be really happy.’ ‘You’ve put that piece on upside down,’ our Linda said, pointing. We all moved closer to have a look. She pointed again, ‘There!’ The man stepped back, then forward, then back again, looking. He took his hat off and scratched his head. ‘I don’t think I have,’ he said, ‘in fact, I know I haven’t!’ ‘Well, if you’re sure…’ said Linda, ‘if you’re sure, then I’ll take your word for it.’ ‘Get out! Clear off, you cheeky little blighter,’ he said, ‘before I give you a good hiding!’

It seemed like forever waiting for the new house to be ready and then when it was ready, we still had to wait because there was a problem with the bath. Mam had sorted everything out; the stuff we were taking was piled on top of the boxes from Aunty Joan and the stuff we were leaving was piled in the kitchen. We were still sleeping in our old beds and sitting on the horrible old sofa but it didn’t matter because we knew it wouldn’t be long before we were ladies of the manor with our onyx ashtray and moquette cushions. After another week of waiting, Mam said she was going to go to the Housing Area West Office while we were at school and give them what for. She was so sick of waiting and she wasn’t the only one. Our Linda said we should have the day off and go with her, but she just said, ‘Off you go, see you this aft.’ Mam was waiting for us at the school gates because it was Wednesday and we always go to our grandma’s for our tea on a Wednesday. We still didn’t know when we could move in to our new house. Mam said that now here was a problem with the underfloor heating, but it was best to have everything tickety boo right from the start. ‘Yes, well, we want everything to be perfect, we don’t we?’ I said, ‘We don’t want to be taking all our swanky new stuff into a rotten house, do we?’

SHORT STORIES ‘We alreadiy live in a rotten, stinking house,’ said Linda, ‘so I don’t care about the stupid underfloor heating, I just want to get out it and have all our new bunk beds and stuff.’ ‘I’m glad you reminded me, Linda,’ Mam said, ‘don’t either of you breathe a word to Grandma or Granddad about the catalogue stuff. I don’t want them to know about it just yet… so keep it dark.’ It’s a good job she told us because I’m as sure as eggs is eggs, we would have told them. Mam always had little secrets from Granddad and so did Grandma. We’d get a biscuit and Grandma would say, ‘Don’t tell your granddad.’ Or Mam would say, ‘Can you lend us a pound, Mam, but don’t tell Dad.’ Me and our Linda got tied in knots wondering what was a secret and what wasn’t! We had neck of lamb with carrots and pearl barley, then rice pudding with jam for our teas and it was so delicious I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. After tea me and our Linda went to watch telly with Granddad while Grandma and Mam made a cup of tea. We watched Casey Jones, which we didn’t like at all, but Granddad did. Then Mam and Grandma came in with the tea and a Blue Riband each and we all watched The Magic Roundabout. It was dark when we walked home. As we got nearer our street, it got darker and darker and really scary because nobody at all was about. There were no lights in any of the houses and no people in any of the houses. It was a ghost street and I hated it. We were really pleased that Mam had banked the fire up before she’d left the house and the fire was still in, so it was lovely and warm, even if it looked like a tip. 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

The next morning I was taking the wee bucket to empty down the lavvy when a car pulled into the street. A man in a suit and a hat got out and smiled at me. I smiled back, even though I hadn’t to talk to strange men, nobody said anything about smiling at them. ‘Do you know where Mrs Hewitt lives?’ he said. ‘That’s my mam! She just lives there, at number 12.’ ‘Well! That’s splendid, splendid, my dear, thank you,’ he said. ‘I’ll just empty the wee bucket and I’ll take you,’ I said. ‘That’s fine, I can see number 12,’ he said. He got out his briefcase and locked his car. I flew down the ginnel, wee sloshed up the sides of the bucket and down my legs into my sock and shoe but I didn’t mind. It must be the man from the Council telling us our house was ready. I tipped the bucket down the lavvy and raced back. Our Linda’s eyes were really wide and she looked shocked. Mam was on her knees as she’d been raking out the cinders from the fire and our Steven was pulling at the man’s trousers and holding his arms up.

‘You do realise that receiving stolen goods is extremely serious and can carry a prison sentence?’ said the man. Mam went a bit white and had to hold on to the coal scuttle. Me and our Linda looked at each other with our mouths wide open. ‘A van will be sent later today to collect all the furniture and housewares. The clothes are another story. I’d suggest you make some arrangements to pay for them.’ Mam nodded and looked down at her black hands. A tear plopped onto her finger. ‘It’s up to them higher up than me to decide whether the police will be involved, but I’ll do my best to get it sorted out as soon as possible, in view of the circumstances.’ ‘Thank you,’ Mam whispered in a little voice. ‘If you could make arrangements to pay for the clothes etcetera, that would go a long way in your favour.’ ‘I’ll do my best,’ said Mam. ‘Good, good,’ said the man, ‘That’s it then, as I said, a van will be round later today, so make sure you’re in and everything’s ready for removal.’

‘Is it ready, Mam?’ I said, ‘Is our house ready? Can me move in today? Shall me and our Linda have the day off? I can’t believe—‘

‘Removal?’ said our Linda, ‘You can’t remove it, it’s ours! Aunty Joan gave us it as a celebration present! You can’t just barge in and take people’s stuff, you… you… big pig!’

‘Shush, Susan,’ said Mam. ‘No, it’s not that.’

‘Linda!’ said Mam, ‘I’m sorry, she’s upset that’s all.’

Everybody looked really serious and I couldn’t work it out.

‘Well, he can’t just—‘

‘LINDA! Be quiet. Go get ready for school you two. Go on, NOW!’ I could tell Mam’s voice was all wobbly and I thought she was going to cry. Me and our Linda went up the first two steps and sat down to listen. ‘Ah, one more thing,’ the man said, ‘you wouldn’t happen to have an address for Mrs Joan Thornton, would you?’ I squeezed our Linda’s arm and she squeezed mine back. ‘She’s on her way to Australia. I’ve no idea, I’m sorry,’ said Mam. ‘Well, bear in mind any information

you can give us will obviously go in your favour.’ The man started to move about and we could hear Mam had stood up so we shot up the stairs and got our coats and hats. When we came back down, Mam was sitting on the old sofa with her head in her hands, roaring. Our Linda picked our Steven up and sat next to Mam and I went and made her a cup of tea with three sugars. ‘How have you done anything wrong, Mam?’ said our Linda. ‘It’s not fair. Aunty Joan gave us a lovely present and we just said thank you, didn’t we? I wish my

dad had been here, don’t you?’ ‘Ooo no!’ said Mam, ‘No… we’d of all ended up in Armley if he’d been here.’ I gave mam her tea and sat on the floor. I was so sad and felt so sorry for her – she was only trying to do nice things for us and now she was in big trouble. I wiped my nose on the sleeve of my cardigan and went over to the cocktail cabinet and opened the lid. “Some Enchanted Evening’ filled room with happiness and my smiled a little smile. ‘Nobody can ever take our cocktail cabinet though, can they?’ I said.

FEEDING GARDEN BIRDS PART 2: WHEN TO FEED AND HOW TO ATTRACT DIFFERENT SPECIES I’m often asked when is the best time to feed birds and whether we should feed them throughout the year. This month we’ll focus on that topic and how you can attract more species to your garden. Once you’ve chosen to feed your garden birds, keep doing it. They will rely on you as a source of food. All you need to think about is the quantity to provide. At certain times of year, fewer birds will visit your garden and your food may remain uneaten. During these times, your birds are making the most of all the natural food that’s around. They need to utilise this while it’s available to vary their diet as much as possible. All you need to do is minimise the amount of food you put out and, if it remains uneaten, change this regularly to keep it fresh. The availability of this natural resource is weather dependent so, as soon as the weather changes, and the bird activity in your garden increases, that’s the time to top up your feeders. Watch the weather forecast with your birds in mind and adjust your feeding accordingly. Attracting more species to your garden requires a little research and some planning. Firstly, you’ll need to improve the natural food sources. Increase the amount of insect food available by planting nectar rich plants. Ivy is an excellent plant to have as it attracts insects very late in the year and provides shelter for spiders over winter. A compost bin provides a source of heat and an abundant food supply for insects. Even if you don’t need the compost, your birds will be able to benefit from the food it provides. Build an insect hotel out of old pallets, pipes, brushwood and bricks. Plant berry and fruit producing trees and shrubs. Provide water in your garden by building a pond or a bird bath. More insects will be able to breed here and you’ll be able to watch birds using it to bathe and drink. Providing this haven for wildlife may entice a new species into your garden during migration. 22 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

Attracting more species to your garden requires a little research and some planning

This winter, check out your surrounding habitats. Leeds is surrounded by farmland, woodland, wetland and moorland. Learn about the species that live there, what they feed on and how they feed. During prolonged freezing conditions, or after a few snowy days, these birds will be looking for food and water and may pass over the city and your garden. Not all birds will visit hanging feeders so provide food on the ground for farmland birds and thrush species and try to keep some open water available. A few winters ago, a flock of skylarks landed in my garden in Leeds 4 during deep snow. They were desperately looking for grain on the ground and this is an easy thing to provide. Perhaps you might be able to entice a passing tree sparrow, yellowhammer or reed bunting to your garden this winter or, if you have berries, a fieldfare, redwing or waxwing. Let me know if you see anything unusual or send me photos to identify. In Part 3, we'll look at bird feeders and how to choose a good one for your garden. SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

The details for this month’s activities depend very much on the weather, if the ground is wet and heavy – do not walk on it. So with that in mind, finish off your winter digging, forking over any bare areas of soil to expose any over wintering pest for the birds to clear. Empty your old compost bins, either digging it in or leaving it to the worms to do the hard work. Clear away as much garden debris as possible, to prevent harbouring slugs and snail over the winter. Have a final weeding session, to leave everything clear for the New Year.

display in the spring. If you like to have holly with berries on inside your house, remember to take the branches early and place them in a bucket of water to keep them fresh. The birds in my garden are devouring berries of all colours, despite seeds and fat balls placed nearby. There are a number of good colour shrubs for this time of year, witch hazel, coloured dogwoods, Viburnums, Mahonia, Christmas box and others. Give yourself an early Christmas present, which will make you smile year after year. Only buy poinsettias and other Christmas plants from indoor areas, where they have been well maintained.

If you have an out of the way space, collect fallen leaves and place them in black plastic bags, punctured with drainage holes. Then leave them tied up for 18 to 24 months, when you will be rewarded with black gold. If your roses are still clinging on to their leaves, remove all of them and dispose of them. This will stop any fungal diseases remaining on the soil, ready to infect your bushes new growth. Dahlias are still flowering, although now is the time to dig them up – even if they have not been blackened by frost. Cut the stalks to about 6”, and then turn them upside down in the dry for at least two weeks. Finally, box them up somewhere frost free in moist multipurpose compost . Complete the planting of all your bulbs, together with wall flowers, winter pansies etc, for a stunning
