GOING SMOKEFREE IN 2016 Look out for smokefree play areas for the New Year as Leeds offers more support for smokers to quit Leeds play areas will be sporting a fresh look this spring as the city takes on board the Breathe 2025 campaign and signs are added to ask smokers not to smoke near areas where children play. New signs will feature artwork provided by local children and back up the wider regional campaign to inspire a smokefree generation being supported by a wide range of councils, organisations and individuals in the area. Councillor Lisa Mulherin, Chair of Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “The public health impact of smoking is enormous and tobacco use remains one of the biggest preventable causes of early death and ill health in Leeds. If we can help both reduce smoking in front of children and support families with smokers to cut their smoking, then we can make a big step in improving health in the city. Smokefree playgrounds are part of the support we are pledging for the Breathe 2025 campaign to have a generation of children where smoking is a thing of the past.”

Paul Lambert, a specialist in tobacco control with Leeds City Council’s public health team, explains: “With the Breathe 2025 campaign we’re calling on everyone: health professionals, organisations, families, communities, young people and all those concerned with the health and happiness of our children, to pledge an action, big or small, on the www. breathe2025.org.uk website, and to be a part of our mission to Inspire a Smokefree Generation.” Pledging is easy. You can simply select a pledge on the website and then you’ll be sent information to help you to make it happen. You’ll also receive a pledge certificate for your workplace or home and be able to display our Breathe 2025 supporter badge. Although smoking rates in Leeds have more than halved over recent decades, the city still has an average rate above 20 per cent, and is above the national average. Because smoking kills half of all people who smoke, stopping smoking is one of the most effective changes anyone can make to improve their health. You don’t just risk dying earlier, but also face years of poor health and painful illness. There is advice and support available for anyone trying to quit from Leeds Lets Change www.leedsletschange.co.uk http://www.leedsletschange.co.uk/pages/ information-on-stopping-smoking

FEEDING GARDEN BIRDS PART 3: CHOOSING BIRD FEEDERS FOR YOUR GARDEN Your choice of garden feeders really depends on type of birds you’re likely to attract and whether you have squirrels, but whatever your circumstances, you need to be able to clean them easily and quickly for it not to be a big chore. Here are my top tips for choosing the right bird feeders. 1. Don't go for bargain priced feeders It really is a false economy and you may be contributing to the ill health of your garden birds. Cheap feeders tend to be badly designed and poorly finished creating hazards for birds. 2. Check that the food ports have suitable drainage holes Poor drainage creates a breeding ground for mould and bacteria, and optimum growing conditions for the seed. If your seed is sprouting, it’s probably due to poor drainage. Have a look inside the bottom feeding port. Has it got holes? Are they blocked? When topping up your feeders, make sure that you poke out any dust that has accumulated at the bottom. If you find damp food in there, take the feeder apart and clean it. 3. Think squirrel! If there are no squirrels in your garden, buying plastic feeders will keep the initial cost down. Be aware though that plastics become brittle in UV light and you may have to replace them more often. If you have squirrels, then go for metal feeders that won't rust. The seed cylinder will still be plastic but the feeding ports, top, base and hanging mechanism will all be made of robust materials. Some feeders are housed in a squirrel-proof cage but this will deter woodpeckers from feeding, and young squirrels can sometimes squeeze themselves through the gaps. With most ‘squirrel proof feeders’ the squirrel will eventually learn to tip them at an angle and spill the food onto the ground. However, there is a model on sale that completely prevents them from accessing the food. As soon as a squirrel comes near the feeder, a metal sheath drops down to prevent them using the ports. If you hate squirrels, then this feeder will give you hours of fun! 4. Check how they're put together To prevent the spread of disease, good practice maintenance requires that you dismantle your feeders
12 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
regularly. Wash them in dilute iodine based disinfectant bought from specialist suppliers. Clean when the food cylinder starts to look opaque and poo has accumulated on the top. Dunking the feeders whole into disinfectant will not do the job effectively and may shorten the life of your feeder. When it comes to taking them apart, Attracting more species to bird feeders range your garden requires a little from the very simple research and some planning to the ridiculously complicated so, when buying new feeders, have a good look at how they’re put together. a) The top should be shaped to disperse raindrops and prevent the food from getting too wet. b) Look to see how many fiddly screws you have to undo to get them apart. If they are difficult to dismantle and put back together, you'll be less likely to clean them and you’re more likely to drop a vital screw when your hands are cold. I have one small feeder that comes apart by removing just one screw. Simple and beautifully designed. c) Ask yourself how easy it could be to damage the feeder during the process. There are feeders that require the use of pliers or mole grips to get them apart. Once you've done this they look scratched and the protective coating is easily removed from the metal.
Don't forget that not all birds can use hanging feeders so make sure that you provide food for birds that like to feed on the ground too. If you see blackbirds and robins trying to take food from your hanging feeders, be aware that they are doing this out of desperation. Give them a hand and put some food on the ground. THE FOUNDATIONS OF YOGA Yoga is founded in ancient tradition and yet is perfectly adapted to our modern age. The health benefits of yoga can be vast and varied. Studies suggest yoga is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity and strength, (especially in the core muscles) and improve flexibility and balance. There is evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for those with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains, including lower back pain, and for helping depression and stress. Dru Yoga is a unique form of yoga, based on flowing movements, directed breathing and visualisation, designed to be accessible to people of all fitness abilities and leaving you feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated. Recent research on the effectiveness of Dru Yoga in the workplace has shown that a 6 week course of Dru yoga significantly improved energy levels, concentration, mood and ability to deal with stress. In summary, yoga can help you release tension physically, mentally and emotionally. Dru yoga is a fun and easy way of gaining these health benefits. TREES PLANTED AT ALLERTON GRANGE FIELDS
STEPCHANGE DEBT ADVICE Many people find themselves with debt problems when the New Year arrives. January is always the busiest month on our helpline and last January almost 60,000 people contacted us for debt advice. Debt can affect people’s mental and physical health and it can impact on their work and their relationships with family and friends.
Friends of Allerton Grange Fields have planted 300 young tree saplings at Allerton Grange Fields in north Leeds thanks to TCV - The Conservation Volunteers as part of the national tree planting programme I-Dig Trees 100 Year Legacy by OVO Energy. OVO Energy has funded the programme on behalf of their Greener Energy plan customers to deliver substantial benefits for communities across the UK. Over 157,000 trees have been planted in over 200 green spaces across the UK. Friends of Allerton Grange Fields were supported by volunteers from TCV, Roundhay Environmental Action Project Gardening Group and pupils from the Gifted & Talented Programme at Allerton Grange School. Volunteers planted tree saplings including Aspen, Small Leaved Lime, Common Oak and Common Alder. “We are very grateful to TCV and OVO Energy for funding the tree planning programme” said Bhupinder Dev, Chair of Friends of Allerton Grange Fields “we look forward to planting more trees in 2016 as we work with pupils at Allerton Grange Grange School on an exciting new community gardening project at Allerton Grange Fields”. If you would like to get involved with the work of Friends of Allerton Grange Fields then visit the website www.friendsallertongrange. org for further information. 18 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
If you’re struggling with debt problems, first of all it’s important to remember you are not alone. Our recent research shows that 2.6 million UK adults are in severe problem debt and over one in five of us display at least one sign of financial difficulty. It can happen to anyone, at any time, and for a variety of reasons. At StepChange Debt Charity, we see the following as signs of financial difficulty: • • • • • •
making minimum repayments on credit commitments for three months or more falling behind on essential bills using credit to pay essential bills using credit to keep up with credit commitment using credit to make it through to payday getting hit with overdraft or late payment charges on a regular basis
If one or more of these apply to you, you might be in financial difficulty. If three or more apply to you, that difficulty could be severe. This list is not exhaustive and if you’re spending time worrying about money, or you think you might in the near future, it’s important to consider getting debt advice as soon as possible. If you think you need free, impartial and non-judgemental debt advice, call us on 0800 138 1111. We helped nearly 600,000 people last year and we’re here to help you if you need us.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
This is the month to concentrate on indoor jobs, only working outside when it is not raining and the ground is workable. Our recent mild weather has made it easy to pick winter vegetables, so continue to lift and eat parsnips, leeks and all the green brassicas. Try to place the trimmings and rotting leaves into the compost bin, in order to keep the ground clear and deter any pests. If you have established apple and pear trees, this is a good time to prune away any damaged branches. Then stand back and take a long look, are there any overlapping or over crowded branches whish would benefit from a good trim. The aim of all pruning is to thin out the tree, and maintain a good shape to invigorate fruit production. PH is something we often overlook in the garden, although it is important to check your soil every few years. The normal figure is 7 for most plants, although some shrubs such a azaleas and rhododendron prefer more lime free soils. Testing kits are very inexpensive, and well worth investing in – especially if you are looking to introduce new plants and shrubs this year. This will allow you to check your soil, against the requirements of your new garden investments. If you have already decided on which seeds to grow this year, take some time to clean all your pots, seed trays and containers, to ensure there are no pests or diseases lurking under the rims and round the sides. It is heart breaking to see newly germinated seeds dying off, due to poor cleanliness and over wintering spores.

Cold icy weather will make paths and patios very slippy, especially when they have a covering of moss, algae and lichens. There are a number of chemicals to treat these spreading green mats, such as Jeyes Fluid, so take a good stiff brush and make your areas safer. Another ideal method if you have the equipment is to use a jet wash for the same effect. Finally, trim old hellebore leaves in order to enjoy the new flower stems, also regularly dead head winter pansies to prolong their flowering.
