THE FIRST LEEDS BIRDFAIR - IT’S A BIRDING AF’FAIR’ New birdwatchers won’t be aware that, each August, birders from around the world flock to our smallest county of Rutlandshire to visit the annual Birdfair. This 3-day event is truly international and will celebrate 28 years of success this year. So what is a Birdfair, I hear you ask? Well, it’s pretty much everything to do with birds and wildlife all taking place under a multitude of marquees. You’ll find the very best in optical equipment; wildlife holiday companies from around the world; wildlife artists showing their paintings, sculpture, lino prints, carvings and etchings; conservation organisations from the national RSPB to the local Lincolnshire and Rutlandshire Wildlife Trust; talks, events and demonstrations and even some appearances from your favourite authors and wildlife programme presenters. All this nestled in the wonderful Rutland Water Nature Reserve with ospreys soaring overhead. I’ll certainly be there as usual but this year will be very special for me because, by the time I arrive at Rutland Water, I’ll have hosted my very own Birdfair here in Leeds – the first ever Leeds Birdfair. It’s a project that’s been on my mind for a couple of years. Every time I travel to Rutland Water I think, why not formally celebrate the wonderful wildlife and green spaces of Leeds? Did you know that over 250 species of birds have been recorded in the Leeds area including real stars such as bittern, dipper and black-necked grebe? And that’s just birds. We have lots of wonderful amateur naturalists out there who could give you a similar story about mammals, plants, fungi, lichens, insects and amphibians. What better way to get the message across than by bringing all the experts together in one place? I think about all our local conservation organisations, and ‘Friends of’ groups, and their duplicated effort to reach out and engage Leeds residents, all aiming to protect our urban and sub-urban green spaces. Their knowledge about their local patch is much greater than I could ever convey during my birdwatching classes so why not get all the groups represented in one place on the same day? With all this in mind, I needed a suitable venue so I approached Rodley Nature Reserve Trust about co-hosting the event. To my 8 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

A Kingfisher sitting proudly

delight, they enthusiastically agreed. So, the first Leeds Birdfair will take place at Rodley Nature Reserve on Saturday 25th June 2016. In terms of size, it will only be small and it will only take place over one day, but that’s a great place to start. Who knows where this will lead, or whether it will be successful enough to repeat next year. One thing I know for sure is that I’m going to have great fun finding out. We’ll have conservation organisations such as the RSPB; Yorkshire Wildlife Trust; British Trust for Ornithology; The Conservation Volunteers; Swillington Ings Bird Group; Spurn Bird Observatory; Leeds City Council representing the local ‘Friends of’ groups; British Dragonfly Society and Yorkshire Naturalist Union, We’ll also have Calverley Beekeepers, photographer Andrew Ramsay; digiscoping demonstrations from Justin Carr; Bird Holidays; In Focus optical equipment; The Blue Barn; Leeds Swifts and of course me at Start Birding and Rodley Nature Reserve. As always, there’ll be bird food, feeders, cards and toys at the reserve visitor centre. Join us for our moth trap opening and mammal survey. Visit the guide in the hide and learn some bird sounds. Book the date in your diary and tell your friends and family about this FREE event. Look out for more news on the new Leeds Birdfair Facebook page and follow us on Twitter@LeedsBirdfair Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. ALWOODLEY REVIEW By Cllr Neil Buckley

Moor Allerton library is the second busiest in the city after the central one on the Headrow. More people visit this council building every week than any other building in Alwoodley. It therefore seems sense that other services are available in the same building; that is now going to happen. From the beginning of May there have been information and staff available there to help with finding a job (they were advertising vacancies at Homebase when I went the other day), apply for a disabled bus pass and find out more about welfare rights. There is a council customer service desk which will be a contact with all the other council services, not just locally but across the city Housing benefit staff will be moving there soon and the NHS will also have a presence there. This is not a substitute for our brilliant medical centre but it will be possible to speak to an NHS expert about mental health services. When we heard about all this we were concerned that it might all be happening at the expense of the library; it isn’t. There will be the same number of books and staff in the library and services will not be reduced at all. When they told me there was also going to be a ‘bike library’ I thought they were joking but it’s true. You can now borrow a bike from Moor Allerton; but don’t worry –the council is not spending your money on new bikes - they will all be recycled.

CHAPEL ALLERTON PARK SET TO GET PINGING! Spin kings and fans of rallies in Chapel Allerton have some good news, with confirmation that outdoor table tennis facilities will be coming to Chapel Allerton Park. Ping! table tennis courts challenge expectations of where you can see table tennis being played and promote free access with free equipment to use which in turn allows people to experience a fun and social sport and form of physical activity. Councillors Jane Dowson, Mohammed Rafique and Eileen Taylor have been working to ensure Chapel Allerton has great local facilities, including table tennis, so everyone visiting the park can practice their shots whilst exercising and keeping healthy. Local events and taster sessions are planned to help people enjoy fun and exciting activities. These will be staffed by volunteers, who will be learning new skills to help people get to grips with this exciting sport. COUNCILLOR JANE DOWSON (LABOUR, CHAPEL ALLERTON) SAID: “Table Tennis can be a great way to exercise, get moving and really sharpen some skills. The Ping! approach means that local people can get outdoors during the day when this suits them. Local people are going to really enjoy these facilities. “I am really pleased that funding from Table Tennis England means that table tennis can come to Chapel Allerton Park. I am working alongside my ward colleagues Councillor Eileen Taylor and Councillor Mohammed Rafique to try and bring more tables to Chapel Allerton.”

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

This is the season to enjoy the lovely colours, in flowers, vegetables and fruit. It is also the season of consistent endeavour, to cut the grass and remove all those fast growing weeds.

Once spring flowering shrubs like forsythia and flowering currants have gone over, it is time to give them a prune to maintain their shape. Rhododendron, camellia and azaleas should have their dead flowers taken off by hand, to ensure there is no damage to the growing shoots. Hedges which do not have birds nesting in them will benefit from a trim to keep a good looking shape. Lastly, be on your guard for the usual invasion of flying insects, slugs, snails etc, and take the appropriate action. Roses will keep their appearance better if sprayed with a product every four weeks, 13:53 against blackspot, rust and aphids.

Then sow small quantities of seeds, every two to three weeks, to avoid a glut in the harvest. Peas, carrots, beetroot, turnips, swedes, leeks and all the brassicas. Lettuce, radish and other salad item should be given the treatment. Plant sweet corn in blocks, to aid wind pollination.
