LOCAL NEWS DEMENTIA USED TO BE SOMETHING WE WOULDN’T MENTION Not so long ago most people were not comfortable talking about dementia. It was too frightening, too hard to understand. And there wasn’t a cure, a magic pill or exercise regime to sort it out. Following lots of hard work, the stigma is lifting and people now know more and talk more about it. "People don’t know what dementia is, and it’s a bit scary at first… slowly I found I was becoming more confident and positive, learning coping strategies and picking up things.” Bob, living with dementia in Leeds. Living with dementia is better if you can keep up with things you enjoy doing, even if it means asking others for a little understanding. It can also help to try new things and meet others who know what it’s like. There’s a range of information about living with dementia in Leeds and information about

Early signs might include memory problems, getting lost in familiar places, or difficulties with words and communication. It isn’t strange to forget why we went upstairs, or to come back from shopping without the very thing we went for. We all do that!

Heat large pan with oil and add onion, garlic and ginger- cook for couple of minutes. Add the broccoli, carrot, pepper and peas- cook for 5 minutes. Add veg stock and coconut milk and if you’re using a chilli and curry powder, add that now. Add salt and pepper to season and gently simmer for 10-15 min. GREASE IS THE WORD! Following months of hard work, Allerton Grange dazzled audiences over two nights with their performance of Grease the Musical. The well-known film came to the big screen in 1978. The American musical romantic comedy film was an adaptation of Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs’ theatre musical of the same name. The story is based around Sandy (Olivia Newton John) and Danny (John Travolta) who fall in love over the summer break, only to find they are attending the same school in the autumn term. Grease remains the highest-grossing musical film in America, and the performance at Allerton Grange has proved to be just as popular as it brought to a close another fantastic year. The audience were treated to our wonderfully talented musicians and vocalists who performed famous hits such as You’re The One That I Want and Hopelessly Devoted to You. The Arts remains a strong area for Allerton Grange, who can count famous Artist Damien Hirst as a former pupil from the late 1970s. The Drama department works tirelessly throughout the year to develop the acting, singing and dancing skills of our young students. Productions are planned at least a year in advance, aspiring to be bigger and better each year. Work is underway to raise funds for next year’s summer performance of The Lion King. Our Drama teachers and ambassadors work closely with local primary schools, delivering workshops which expand on curriculum
areas. Earlier this month, Allerton Grange attended Moor Allerton Hall Primary School to deliver a performance from Romeo and Juliet, with all year groups turning out for the performance. In line with one of our aims, to work more closely with younger children from local primary schools, Moor Allerton Hall and Hovingham Primary School attended a day-time dress rehearsal to catch a sneak peek ahead of the evening shows. On the last night of the performance, the winner of the Lily Cleal Award was announced. Mr and Mrs Cleal presented the award for the most outstanding contribution to drama, honouring Lily’s passion and commitment during her time at the school, to Year 11 student Niall Murray-Sharpe. Allerton Grange’s Acting Head of Drama, Mr J Hasslegreen, said “our students have worked extremely hard to make this performance an unforgettable experience with some really amazing talent destined to go on to great things, I have no doubt”.
