BHF’S TESTING HALF MARATHON AT HAREWOOD HOUSE Although posted and promoted as a halfmarathon, British Heart Foundation’s inaugural fundraising event at Harewood House on 8 February had a surprise in store for some of the participants. Yes it was run over the expected thirteen miles. But those thirteen miles were over undulating
The event benefited from BHF’s slick organisational skills.
BHF is a regular organiser of sponsored events such as this, and their inaugural event at Harewood was as slick an operation as might be expected. An invitation has already been extended for runners and fundraisers to register their interest in the 2016 repeat event (again in February, though date TBC) - bhf.org.uk/harewood
Second-placed Darran Bilton of Leeds City AC was the highest placed local club runner, finishing with a time of 1.25.42 – creditable, though over two minutes behind Trawden AC’s Chris Singleton. But the fundraising event wasn’t targeted only at committed and experienced runners. Many participants finished in three hours or more.

countryside, farmland and country footpaths rather than on roads and pavements. So, even more hats off to the 819 runners who completed the course. With funds still coming in, the total amount raised has yet to be announced. 6 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
Readers interested in participating in another local though shorter event might consider running this year’s “Over the Odda”, a ten kilometres (six miles) cross-country run now in its third year and raising funds for Hawksworth C of E School. BUYING LOCAL AND SEASONAL - HONEY Honey bees start foraging when the temperature hits 12 degrees. Having enjoyed isolated short spells with the temperature in double figures in January and February, this year’s honey production may well be underway by the time this March issue of Suburban finishes distribution. So we asked Calverley beekeepers Anne Taylor and Paul Lawrence (pictured) for some expert tips. Paul; “Honey doesn’t mature, improve or deteriorate with time. Honey found in the tombs of the Pharaohs is as fresh today as it was thousands of years ago. What makes a real difference is the environment in which the bees gather the pollen – the crops. Early spring production depends on ivy and early flowers such as crocus
and snowdrops. Spring honeys should be eaten raw. Use them instead of sugar. I particularly enjoy mine on porridge”. “One of my own favourites later in the year, and one very popular with our customers, is heather. There’s not a lot of heather in the Calverley area - nor in Rodley or Kirkstall, where we also keep bees. So, last year, I took a couple of hives to Ilkley Moor and left them there for a few months. Whether we repeat that exercise this year, or try another, remains to be decided.” Paul and his associates stand at local farmers’ markets and summer shows. They also offer

LEEDS GOING GREENER IN STOURTON The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) is an environmentally aware organisation which can trace its roots directly back to 1959, when the government created and funded the Conservation Corps. In their early days they were a nationwide body of volunteers dedicated to practical conservation work clearing and replanting parts of nature reserves and the like. In 2012, after fifty years of refinement and rebranding, the organisation adopted its present name – TCV. Now, supporting 2000 community groups nationwide, their purpose remains helping communities regain green Skelton Grange goes full circle. TCV is supported nationwide by the government, National Lottery and National Grid. The grid supplies land next to sub-stations to be put to green use. Skelton Grange is in the shadow of their Stourton sub-station (pictured) – which until 1990 was next door to a coal fired power station.

spaces. But, during those fifty years, their remit had become far wider than just recruiting and directing volunteer labour. Now they see green spaces not only as pretty places for plants and wildlife and recreation for people, but also as “classrooms, gyms, playgrounds and sanctuaries” and incorporating environmentally friendly practices and processes wherever they can. Of TCV’s five “green hubs” (with permanent facilities) in England, two are in Leeds. One is Hollybush Conservation Centre in Kirkstall and the other is Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Stourton which, since 1992, has used the environment to provide education, job skills, exercise and recreation to people of all ages and ability. one of their regular volunteer groups, “the Green Team” was busy clearing hedgerows on part of the ten acre site. Apart from regular classes and volunteer days, the Skelton Grange also offers a wide range of one-off activities, events and courses. The extensive programme for March and April includes sessions as diverse as environmental games, lino printing, spring wild food walk (and gourmet meal) and bushcraft for 8-12 year olds. They also offer tailor-made courses and activities for schools, communities and workplaces. Full details of TCV and links to Hollybush and Skelton Grange green hubs can be found on tcv.org.uk – the links to the two centres’ Facebook pages gives the most up to date news. PUT SOMETHING BACK INTO YOUR COMMUNITY Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust has volunteer Community First Responders (CFRs) who provide immediate life-saving care to members of their local communities in an emergency medical situation, such as cardiac arrest, in the vital minutes before the ambulance arrives. They are trained in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) which delivers a controlled electric shock to restart the heart. CFRs also carry portable oxygen. CFRs make a valuable contribution to their
communities. In many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical and if effective treatment can be performed within that time, lives can be saved and disability reduced. Volunteers come from all walks of life. Many volunteer as a CFR to gain experience, to help their local communities and some people have had personal experience of a loved one needing prompt medical attention and can see the value in this initiative.

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very said for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I gt a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to
show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NEW CENTRE FOR LS8 The Kerala Ayurveda Centre has announced the opening of their new premises at the Lodge Medical Centre on Grange Park Avenue, Leeds bringing its traditional style of Kerala Ayurveda treatment to Yorkshire. Established in Leicester in 2009, the Kerala Ayurveda Centre is expanding its operation in Yorkshire to cope with increasing demand for its complementary treatments. The Kerala Ayurveda Centre now has four treatment centres in the UK and plans to build on their success and further expand, as demand for Ayurveda continues to grow in the UK. Sarju Raikundalia, Director and Founder of The Kerala Ayurveda Centre said: “This is an exciting time for Ayurveda in the UK with the launch of our third centre here in Leeds and the growing reputation of this style of complementary treatment. We have received great support from the local community and we’re forging links with GPs and pharmacies, to work together to demonstrate the benefits to
those who may not have heard or tried Ayurveda before.” Sarju Raikundalia first encountered Ayurveda after exhausting conventional treatment for whiplash following a car accident. Initially dismissive of his mum’s recommendation that he try Ayurveda, Sarju was astounded by the results and went on to travel to India to find out more about the practice of Ayurveda and its health benefits. Years later, Sarju founded the first Kerala Ayurveda Centre in Leicester to bring his own unique brand of authentic Kerala Ayurveda to the UK. Now with premises in Leicester, Bolton, Walsall and Leeds, the Kerala Ayurveda Centre’s team of fully
qualified Ayurveda practitioners offer complementary treatments for a wide range of health problems, as well as wellbeing packages to help people to stay healthy in body and mind. Sarju Raikundalia added: “We noticed we were getting clients travelling for up to an hour to come to our treatment centres, with increasing numbers from Yorkshire. We now have well in excess of 25,000 registered clients across the UK, and with 75% of new customers coming from recommendations, we’re growing all the time.” For more information visit: keralaayurvedacentre.co.uk 1a Grange Park Avenue, LS8 3BA TEL: 0113 265 3066

OLLY THE OWL Brian Firth, a retired businessman from Guiseley currently volunteering as a Community First Responder with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, shares his story with Suburban. There are obvious parallels with Barry Hines’ Kes. But Brian’s story is true. It’s also so heart warming that, rather than cut it to size, we’re running it in three instalments.
Brian’s Story I was aged around eleven when Olly and I first met. That would have been in 1958. My pal David and I were walking home through Ghyll Royd when I spotted a ball of fluff on the footpath. Then the two large round eyes staring back. It was a tawny owl chick, bleeding from the nostrils and with a cracked beak. It seemed too tired to be frightened. We looked round but there were no signs of any nest or adult owls. So I did what any kid of eleven might do - picked him 20 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

up and took him home. The vets were closed so my parents helped me put him in a cardboard box, left him some water and went to bed. They warned me that he would probably die during the night. I jumped
up in the morning and ran downstairs. There he was, wide awake and squawking for food. Chopped worms did the trick. The vet told us that he’d never treated an owl. Although he was able to

brown feathers. Though he never made the twit twoo they do in the movies, just a clicking sound. Then a repertoire of screeches, squeaks and squawks. I was sure he was trying to tell me something. Maybe he was referring to the family dog, Kell, a Labrador multi-cross. Was Olly looking for a playmate or a larger mouse?
Olly, Brian and Kell
“OLLY SEEMED TOO TIRED TO BE FRIGHTENED. WE LOOKED ROUND BUT THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF ANY NEST OR ADULT OWLS. SO I DID WHAT ANY KID OF ELEVEN MIGHT DO - PICKED HIM UP AND TOOK HIM HOME” confirm that there were no serious injuries, he didn’t give him much chance of survival. Dad and I went back to Ghyll Royd that night, hoping to reunite him with his family. We waited for ages, but nothing. The only option was to keep him. And call him Olly. The chopped worms stopped working. The vet had read up on owl diets and recommended lamb heart tightly bound with feathers. And the occasional wild mouse. Kays butchers on Town Street on Guiseley kept me well supplied with lamb heart so I gave
the mice a miss. Two weeks later and it seemed that Olly was going to stay for a while. Dad and I built a large indoor aviary, on top of the coal bunker. I also bought a live mouse trap – and let Olly do the rest. It was the only exercise he had at the time. One week into the new menu and Olly gave me a bit of fright. Was he choking? No - he was regurgitating a ball of feathers, fur and bones. It was apparently what owls did. A couple of months later and Olly had shed his down and grown rich
By that time I was facing up to the reality of releasing Olly back into the wild. But he needed some flying lessons. Or at least some backup if he couldn’t find his wings immediately. Although a novice flying instructor, I’d got it all planned. Starting with Olly on my arm, I’d move it up and down to encourage take-off. Textbook stuff, yes? Kell would stay at home just in case he thought I was playing fetch. I took Olly out at dusk so that I could maintain sight. To the fields that are now Coppice Wood Crescent. There was plenty of countryside all around at the time. So far so good... Although Olly’s first flying lesson didn’t go according to plan, it was an episode in a friendship between bird and boy that was to last for three years. Read what happened next in our April issue. SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
This is the start of the gardening year, so hopefully you will have finished all your winter digging, pruned your fruit trees and bushes and given them a winter wash. In the borders, trim back large shrubs such as buddleia etc, and tidy up all the dead foliage from established perennials. Clematis which flower after July can be cut back hard, leaving all the others until after they have flowered. Looking outside, how much colour is showing? And how much scent is wafting as you walk around. If the answer is little or none, look for Daphne, Winter Jasmine, Sarococca, Witch Hazel and Mahonia to mention just a few, for both colour and scent. Split your snowdrops and other bulbs every four years, to stop 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE
them becoming congested - which reduces their flowers. A joy just now is to start sowing annual seeds under cover, together with sweet peas, and imagining the colours which will burst out in the summer. If you do not have facilities for growing seeds at home, order your plug plants now for delivery later in the year. Potatoes are an ideal vegetable to grow at home in florist buckets, with drainage holes, or purpose made bags. There are many varieties to choose from, so buy one or two of the different varieties, then stand them upright in a warm light space to stat to chit (sprout from the eyes). Later be ready to plant them out at the bottom of your container on about 3 of compost, adding more compost as the plant grows to keep the leaves just covered. Shallots are an ideal choice for the smaller household, and may be planted now if the ground is not frozen, together with garlic for making your own organic bug repellent.
