WELCOME TO SUBURBAN LEEDS Welcome to edition 21 of Suburban Magazine. We have had a good response to the request for details of local community events over the Christmas period and have included as many as possible in this month’s edition. This was (possibly), the first morning of this winter that saw many of us having to scrape the ice from our car windows. With this colder weather in mind we have, in this month’s edition, some tips on keeping warm over winter – for both people and pets. Thank you as always to our valued advertisers and to readers who have sent in articles and news of local interest. Please forward editorial ideas to editorial@suburbanleeds.co.uk

LOCAL NEWS ANIMAL WELFARE IN WINTER Article kindly provided by the RSPCA

As the weather gets colder, it is important to think about what we can do to help our animal friends - particularly those kept outside, like rabbits. Rabbits can have a tough time in the winter, as well as lower temperatures and bad weather, fresh grass and leafy greens may be less available, owners may be tempted to spend less time with them and there may be changes to their usual routine. It’s really important that owners ensure all their rabbits’ welfare needs are met and there are lots of things they can do to help keep their rabbits happy and healthy during the winter. A factsheet giving lots more information on caring for rabbits in the winter can be downloaded from: www.

rspca.org.uk/winteradvice Outdoor accommodation needs to be protected from extremes of weather and temperature. Regularly check the accommodation and make repairs when necessary. Rabbits need lots of extra bedding over the winter. Suitable bedding materials include dust-free hay and straw, on top of layers of newspaper, which absorb moisture and provide insulation. Keep rabbits’ routine as normal as possible. For example, keep daily feeding and exercise times consistent, groom them regularly, give them a daily health check and spend time with them every day. Rabbits must have constant access to clean, fresh drinking

water. Check the supply at least twice a day to ensure water has not frozen. If using a drinking bottle, check the ball at the end of the spout is turning and squeeze the bottle to ensure water is flowing through the spout. If the temperature starts to reach freezing, you could consider moving them into an outhouse, shed or unused garage. Always ensure that anywhere your rabbits can access is safe and hazard-free. Never house or exercise them in garages that are in use as exhaust fumes are harmful, and don’t keep them in greenhouses due to the possibility of extreme changes in temperature. If you are at all concerned about your rabbits, or have any questions about their welfare needs during the winter, speak to your vet.

RAISING DOSH FOR DOGGIES AT BIG WALKIES LEEDS

and given the care he needed which allowed him to gain weight safely and eventually becoming a healthy and active dog with lots of love to give.

This month, Roundhay Park in Leeds saw hundreds of dogs come together to put their best paw forward to raise money for the RSPCA at their charity dog walk BIG Walkies, in partnership with Vitality.

Thankfully, Diesel has now found his forever home with a family that love and care for him the way a he deserves – but there are still animals that need help coming into the RSPCA all the time.

The money raised by the dogs’ sponsorship is helping to fund the local RSPCA Leeds Wakefield and District Branch to take care of more animals and find them new homes – dogs like Diesel.

BIG Walkies has helped the RSPCA Leeds, Wakefield and District Branch to keep helping animals by raising over £1000 – the money that was raised can help the RSPCA provide enough food, shelter and bedding for 16 rescue dogs for one week.

Diesel came to RSPCA Leeds, Wakefield and District Branch underweight and neglected after he had a difficult start in life and was not cared for by his owners. He was taken in by the staff, rehabilitated by them

LOCAL NEWS

KEEP WARM, KEEP WELL It’s that time of year again where you can really start to feel the cold. Follow these tips from Public Health England and Age UK to stay safe this Winter.

Keep warm. Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F). You may prefer your main living room to be slightly warmer. Keep your bedroom window closed on a winter’s night. Breathing in cold air can increase the risk of chest infections. Get financial support: There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills. Look after yourself: •

Contact your GP to get your free flu jab if you

• •

are aged 65 or over, live in a residential or nursing home, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person. NHS Choices provides information about flu. Visit www.nhs. uk/flu to learn more. Don’t delay in getting treatment for minor winter ailments like colds or sore throats. Visit your local pharmacist for advice on treatment before it gets worse so you can recover quicker. Layer your clothing whether you are indoors or outside. Wrap a scarf around your mouth to protect your lungs from the cold air. Wear shoes with a good grip if you need to go outside. When you’re indoors, try not to sit still for more than an hour or so. Get up, stretch your legs and make yourself a warm drink.

Have your heating and cooking appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer to make sure they are operating safely. Contact your water and power suppliers to see if you can be on the Priority Services Register, a service for older and disabled people.

Check on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they’re safe and well. Make sure they’re warm enough, especially at night, and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather. If you’re worried about an older person, contact a family member, the local council or ring Age UK For more information about how to stay warm and well in winter visit Age UK’s website www. ageuk.org.uk/winterprep or call 0800 587 0668.

LOCAL NEWS WHY MAKE A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY? Who will make decisions about your finances and health when you no longer can? We all know that we should write a Will, but too few of us know we should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) to make provision for our loss of capacity to manage our affairs during our lifetime. With an ageing population, and many more people being affected by dementia, the need to have someone in place to make decisions about your property and finances and your health and welfare, when you no longer can, is higher than ever. According to the Alzheimer’s Society there are currently around 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, affecting 1 in 6 over the age of 80. Numbers are set to rise to 1 million by 2025. TYPES OF LPA Property and Financial Affairs Covers decisions regarding:•

Buying and selling your house or other assets

Operating your bank and building society accounts Claiming benefits on your behalf Tax affairs Paying bills/mortgage Investing money

Health and Welfare Covers decisions regarding:• •

Living accommodation and care Medical care – including consenting to or refusing treatment on your behalf Day to day matters such as diet and dress, who you should have contact with and what activities you should take part in.

confirms that you understand it and have not been put under any pressure to sign it. The LPA must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used. WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE AN LPA? If you don’t have an LPA and become incapable of managing your affairs an application may have to be made to the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy. This process can be very lengthy and costly. CONCLUSION

WHO CAN I APPOINT AS MY ATTORNEY? You can appoint one or more than one attorney to act on your behalf either jointly (together) or jointly and severally (independently). HOW DO I MAKE AN LPA? An LPA document needs to be completed and signed by you and your attorneys setting out any preferences and instructions. To protect your interests the LPA must be signed by a Certificate Provider who

We recommend, as do most leading charities who care for the elderly, that you have an LPA in place. LPAs are recognised by banks, building societies and other financial institutions and can be set up relatively cheaply.
