Sadly, January is a busy time for family lawyers. As people put away their Christmas decorations, they often reflect on the past year and the year ahead. Many decide to make fundamental changes in their personal lives. Last year, we found more and more people were trying to do their own divorces on line and then came to see us when they ran into problems, or the court rejected an application due to fundamental legal errors.

We were also instructed by people years after their divorce, having received a claim out of the blue from their ex-spouse for financial provision. 5. Not instructing a specialist family solicitor at the outset can be a false economy, often costing the parties more than it would had they instructed a solicitor from the start. Here are some of the reasons why people choose to instruct a specialist family solicitor when they are thinking about going through a divorce: 1.
Divorce is a stressful time for everyone. It can be mentally and physically taxing on the strongest person. Instructing a specialist family law solicitor to complete a divorce is one way to reduce the amount of stress and pressure of the divorce. Let the solicitor deal with the complex legal issues and the direct contact with your soon to be ex-partner or their solicitor.

A specialist family law solicitor will employ their knowledge, expertise and experience into finding more creative solutions for a fair division of the assets that a lay person may never have thought possible. You can avoid mistakes and therefore additional expense and delay that mistakes can cause. The legal system is complex, as can be the legal issues. Each divorce is case specific and no two divorces are alike…so you cannot obtain the right advice for your situation from the internet sites as these are geared and intended to provide general non-specific advice only. No one divorce fits all; Your partner says ‘we can agree the terms ourselves and save money on solicitors’, an oral financial agreement is unlikely to hold up in court, a solicitor will help you achieve your desired outcome. Some partners try to pressurise the other into agreeing a settlement that is one sided. A specialist family solicitor will avoid this happening; and

If you require financial certainty and security, a clear and legally binding financial agreement is a must in a divorce. Unless you are familiar with legal jargon it is unlikely that you will create a financially binding document that is certain, concise and unambiguous.

LOCAL NEWS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ABUSE SUPPORT ACROSS THE METROPOLITAN DISTRICT OF LEEDS All women, men and children have the right to live safely, free from fear and harm.
Behind Closed Doors (BCD), like many other essential charities, was born out of a desire to help others, more specifically to provide a lifeline to women experiencing domestic violence and abuse where others couldn’t. Established in 1997 by a group of local people in the Otley area, the service has grown from a weekly 2-hour helpline run by Volunteers to a Leeds city-wide service supporting women and men who are - or have in the past - experienced domestic violence and abuse. In addition to providing the Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) Outreach Team, BCD also set up a Prevention and Recovery Service (PARS) to support people whose needs are more around preventing escalation of risk or require support to recover after leaving an abusive relationship. The services support people in safe locations (often their own homes or community locations) across the City and spend time understanding everyone’s unique experience and needs and agreeing a personalised support plan. In the PARS, many of the Supporters are a wonderful team of Volunteers who

undertake the in-house 11 week training and mentoring programme before working directly with victims of abuse. The PARS also designs and delivers bespoke training programmes as well as a range of multiagency training days. The Department for Education was sufficiently impressed by a BCD school-based pilot programme to agree to fund a 12-month project in Leeds to design, trial and share a set of resources and workshops for schools to use to promote Healthy Relationships. The resources were written for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 and are now freely available on a specialist website; www.bcd-orb.org.uk Delivering this educationbased project highlighted how many young people are themselves in abusive relationships but fail to recognise how they are being hurt and manipulated, especially by different forms of psychological abuse. Sadly, the statistics suggest that the problem is escalating. BCD identified some time ago that one of the key actions to reverse this trend is to educate young people themselves and to make this ‘taboo’ subject universally accessible. Furthermore, and recognising the massive influence of their peers, it is important to provide young people with the knowledge and confidence to challenge abusive behaviours within
their own environments and to empower each other to seek the right type of support. LOCAL NEWS CAMPAIGN TO END PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE Year 12 student, Fizah, has created a thought provoking video to raise awareness of psychological abuse. As part of her online blog, ‘think lifestyle, think me’, Fizah already plays an active role in raising awareness of topics close to her heart with her followers. Setting out on her mission, Fizah approached peers and teachers within school and asked them if they would be willing to support her campaign. After approaching them herself, Fizah is working with a Leeds based domestic violence charity called Behind Closed Doors (BCD) to raise the profile of the video, launched today, as part of the national campaign ‘16 Days of Activism’ which hopes to raise awareness of and help stop domestic violence and abuse. Fizah had this to say on the concept behind the video, “I think psychological abuse is more widespread amongst young people than is currently thought, but I see it a lot and it’s become common place for people to accept their boyfriend or girlfriend having the PIN to their phone
or checking their social media accounts. Things might start off as small but can escalate quickly and we need to re-educate young people on what is and is not acceptable so that they can go on to form healthy relationships. Things like Memes are all too readily shared on social media taking the mickey out of being under the thumb for example, but they lead to real issues being downplayed and seen as a source of humour. I hope that my video reaches far and wide and if it helps just one young person recognise psychological abuse then I’ll be happy.” Behind Closed Doors has invited Fizah (and school representatives) to work with their project team to develop a role as their first Young Person’s Ambassador. They also plan to embed this role in an education-based support model which can be adopted by other secondary schools and higher education providers and hope to secure funding to support this work. Louise Tyne, Director of Behind Closed Doors, said, “When Fizah first approached Behind Closed Doors the team were amazed that she had taken it
upon herself to produce this video and raise awareness of psychological abuse amongst young people. LIGHTING UP THE A61 We have been asked what we think about a set of proposals for speeding the traffic into and out of town where the Ring Road crosses the A61 (Harrogate Road). I have spent many hours of my life in the queues for the two roundabouts and the alternative way, along King Lane and past the shopping centre, is no better.

The suggestion is to install traffic lights on the roundabouts. This would at least have the befit of preventing one vehicle stopping on the roundabout and causing delays of ten minutes or more, particularly in the evening for traffic coming out of Leeds. These changes are really part of the preparation for the new East Leeds Orbital Road, which will, sort of, replace the Ring Road from the Red Hall Council nurseries and then go round the back of Whinmoor, Seacroft and Cross Gates. Work on that won’t start for at least a year and probably more, and when it does happen the disturbance will be epic. There are other ideas. How do you feel about a bus lane on part of Harrogate Road, just north of St John’s church roundabout? Shall we ask council officers to look at widening Roundhay Park Lane (this is not one of my favourites but it would take pressure off the other routes into the city)? Do you think anyone would use a Park and Ride opposite the Grammar School at the edge of the built-up areas?
