BE SURE TO CAST YOUR VOTE One of the saddest aspects of being an MP is meeting people who tell me that they never vote because politics is not important; that politicians are only ‘in it for themselves’; or that all political parties are the same. This cynicism is often fed by the media, press and television, and I have to single out the destructive way in which some broadcasters automatically deride the political processes in our precious democracy. Quiz and chat shows are often the worst offenders. Allow me to put forward a different point of view. There are still profound injustices in our society, wealth, access to health care, access to justice, housing, taxation, education to name but a few. I suspect everyone, if asked, could pick out some aspect of our society that they would wish to change. So why do we in the UK so frequently fail to make the connection with politics? It is the governing party in London that can make changes to the law that might be needed, provide the money, decide the priorities and implement change. It is the ruling party in the City Council that can change local policy and make spending decisions that reflect key priorities. If you do not vote, others certainly will and then your chance to help choose leaders locally and nationally will have been missed. Sometimes just a few extra votes can make all the difference between who wins and who loses. In the general and local elections this year we may see more close results than ever before. Worse, low turnout means that there is the risk of small but highly organised groups or parties gaining power because of apathy. The best result after any election – party politics aside – is one where there has been a high turnout and a convincing majority. The result is respected and then those elected – the politicians – can get on with their work. They will still receive brickbats, but that goes with the job. Voters, on the other hand, get the leaders the majority of them want. If we lose faith in democracy and fail to vote when we have the chance, it puts our society on a downward spiral, establishing a gulf between those in power and those who are governed. Just look at the news from around the world and see the mayhem that is taking place in countries where people have no say over who is in power. Giving up on democracy by not voting is the start of a very slippery slope. Please get out and vote on May 7th Doug Masterton Communications Officer for Fabian Hamilton candidate for re-election as Labour MP for Leeds North East. 335 Roundhay Road LS8 4HT 0113 249 6600

BUYING LOCAL STILL MAKING SENSE The country wide campaign to buy locally has recently had its detractors. Some argue that transportation costs are often a tiny fraction of the cost of the product and that money spent is often better and more effectively received overseas than it might be at home. Then there are questions about quality, suitability and cost. Do we really care whether the tyres most suited to our bicycle, motorbike or car (and budget) are made by Avon, Goodyear, Metzler, Michelin or Pirelli - or whoever and wherever? They have a point. There are nonetheless real community benefits in shopping for local goods and services. It puts more money in the local economy, and what goes around comes around. Local enterprises are safeguarded and continue to pay local taxes. You know the person you are dealing with – perhaps your families have been trading for years. And, in the case of local produce, there is greater confidence that the products are truly seasonal and fresh.

Local businesses are invariably run by local people who have a good knowledge of the area and who can offer help and advice. Manager Julie Wilson of Oakwood estate agents William H Brown is advising potential vendors of the benefits of selling their homes in the spring when gardens are full of flowers, days are getting longer and the sun has started to shine – particularly relevant in Oakwood due to its proximity to Roundhay Park and long tree lined avenues. Further down Roundhay Road, Perfection Carpets knows the importance of offering the type and level of services not always provided by large nationals. Their shop front at number 653 is deceptive – though how on earth they manage to display so many examples, colours and shades of so many high quality carpets and other types of floor covering under that one roof is a marvel. IT’S TIME FOR A SPRING TIME SPRUCE UP, SAYS JULIE WILSON, BRANCH MANAGER, WILLIAM H BROWN OAKWOOD. Local estate agency William H Brown which is part of the national network Sequence UK, is expecting another extremely busy spring. With a 7.5% increase in buyers putting their property on the market reported during April 2014 compared to the same month in 2013, William H Brown in Oakwood is expecting another rise in activity and is advising prospective sellers to spruce up their property before the spring rush arrives. With spring now upon us and interest from buyers rising, Branch Manager Julie Wilson at William H Brown in Oakwood believes that now is the most aesthetically pleasing time for potential sellers to get their property on to the market: “Easter is just around the corner which means spring has arrived and the longer daylight hours are setting in. Flowers are in bloom, front gardens look more attractive and the sun is starting to shine. Ensuring that your property looks great at this time of year really helps as first impressions do count when it comes to getting the best price possible on your house sale.” says Julie Wilson. As more sellers look to place their property on the market around the spring period, now is the ideal time to get the ball rolling with regards to selling your home: “Spring is traditionally known as the busiest time of year for the property market, which means the competition from buyers is fierce,” says Julie Wilson “With this in mind we are urging anybody who is thinking of selling their property to get in touch with us now to see how we can help market your property.”

Perfection Carpets is that they will remove your old carpet with the assurance that it will be recycled and not go to landfill. Local owners Howard and Nooshin Keeling at Goodnight Sleeptight, also on Roundhay Road, sell a wide range of beds without the need for customers to visit large and sometimes quite impersonal of out of town retail parks. In their case they are doubly local. Howard told Suburban “Yes of course we embrace the importance of dealing with local businesses and local business owner. Our home overlooks the park – you can’t get more local than that.”

One of the many community aware organisations with its finger on the local pulse is the Oakwood Traders’ and Residents’ Association. An important OTRA supported project, recently, was securing the funds necessary for the restoration of Oakwood Clock. The structure was put back in place at the very end of March, with the fully restored clock still waiting to be installed. The official unveiling on 2 May will be an important event for the whole of north Leeds and not just the immediate community. OTRA news and latest activities are easily found on social media.

LOCAL NEWS FEAST YOUR EARS ON THE SOUNDS OF NATURE THIS SPRING The long, dark winter evenings are over. The clocks have changed and the air is full of the sound of bird song. Bird song begins in mid December, when the days start to get longer. The daily increase of light stimulates the release of special hormones which bring birds into breeding condition. Mistle Thrushes, Song Thrushes and Great Tits

are usually the first to start singing and, as the weeks go by, more and more species join in. By the beginning of March, most of our resident birds are singing and by mid March, the first of our annual spring migrants reach Yorkshire. Leeds is full of places to watch birds and listen to bird song from large estates such as Roundhay Park to smaller nature areas. Close to Roundhay Park are Gledhow Valley Woods, the Wyke Beck Valley Trail and Gipton Woods. If you live in Horsforth then Hawksworth Woods and Newlay Woods are a good place to start. Nestling further up the Aire Valley is a very special place, Rodley Nature Reserve and from here you can walk down the canal to Bramley Falls Wood or in the opposite

direction to Calverley Woods. The canal, river and surrounding farmland habitats provide even more species of birds. Travel around the ring road to Pudsey and Tong Road will lead you to places such as Cockerdale, Troydale and Post Hill. All of these amazing places are free to visit. All you have to do is stop, look and listen. To learn more about how to identify birds and their songs, join a Start Birding birdwatching class. YORKSHIRE CAT RESCUE Yorkshire Cat Rescue is a Keighley-based charity that cares for and re-homes more than 700 abandoned and unwanted cats each year. With average weekly vet bills of £1,550 and a waiting list of 1,000 cats and kittens in need of help, the charity desperately needs help with both fundraising and volunteering. Sara Atkinson who founded the charity in 1992 says: “We have just begun recruiting for new volunteers to provide temporary foster homes for some of our cats, and for people who might have time to help with local fundraising in the community or in our two charity shops.”

BUYING LOCAL Buying local, fresh and seasonal has been made so much easier since the introduction of farmers’ markets. There are now monthly markets in Oakwood, Headingly, Kirkstall, Horsforth, Bramhope, Guiseley, Farsley and Otley – spread over the month so that even last Sundays are covered (Otley). Visitors to Horsforth Farmers’ Market on the first Saturday in March didn’t have to walk far to get the choice of a wide range of local beers; it was the second day of the town’s 7th Beer and Cider Festival in St Margaret’s Church Hall, starting with 69 beers and

Brewing local at Horsforth Beer and Cider Festival. Dennis Herbert was curious about Wharfe Bank Brewery’s Black Hawk IPA. Wharfe Bank (Otley) has followed the recent brewing trend and added a dark (or black) pale ale to its repertoire. And very nice it is too.

Boiler broken or over 12 years old?

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very said for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to

show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

OLLY THE OWL

frightened them away, it must also have terrified Olly. He was struggling and pecking at my hands. His eyes were wide and his chest was heaving. It was the first time he had ever shown any fear of me. I was sobbing my heart out. What an idiot I’d been! What had I done?

PART II

In the last issue, retired Guiseley businessman Brian Firth told Suburban how he had found an injured tawny owl chick and nursed it back to health. Still aged 11 and in 1958, it was now time for the young flying instructor to give Olly his first lesson... There was nobody around and it was deadly quiet. A row of trees ran towards Yeadon Banks, separating the adjoining fields. I stayed away from them in case Olly flew onto a branch, out of reach. I needed to be sure that he was capable of surviving on his own before taking the risk of him flying off. I’ll never forget his eyes darting everywhere, his head bobbing up and down. At first I sat on the grass with Olly on my arm, just as I had done many times on our lawn. I stood and moved my arm up and down. Olly wasn’t impressed. He simply 22 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

dug his claws into my jumper, flapping his wings only to keep balance and stayed put. Then I ran slowly across the field. He let go eventually, only to flutter to the ground. Plan C was to throw him in the air, gently and maybe three or four feet from the ground. That one worked he flew back to the ground about three yards away. Each time he flew a little further before landing. So far so good. Until he flew some forty or fifty feet away. Suddenly a mass of all types of birds descended on Olly and attacked him – just like a scene from Hitchcock’s film. I ran at them waving my arms and screaming. Although that

It took time to regain Olly’s trust. Whereas he used to greet me at feeding time, hopping to the branch nearest the aviary door, he was now staring at me from the far corner. When I opened the door he went berserk, fluttering around and squawking like mad. I tried to stroke him to calm him down but he was absolutely terrified. He wasn`t enjoying his food like he used to. I couldn`t take him out onto the side lawn because he wouldn`t let me pick him up. It was three weeks before we reconciled. I’d just come home from school and was preparing Olly’s lamb hearts when I heard the twittering of old. He greeted me at the aviary door and, instead of going straight for the food, he hopped onto my hand, walked up my arm and perched on my shoulder. He was making the little clicking noises that he had done as a baby. Then back into the aviary and straight

I would take Olly into the fields regularly, often followed by bunch of local kids – all under strict instruction not to make sudden movements or noise. By this time it had become routine for Olly to fly into the trees and return either when he was ready or when I called. Mum had commandeered one of dad’s old jackets and made a protective sleeve for me. I’d become quite a proficient owl handler. Looking back, perhaps these flights were indications that Olly was becoming ready for release. But that didn’t occur to me at the time. I was simply playing with my pet owl, wasn’t I?

Olly and Brian at home in Guiseley. Despite early setbacks, Brian turned out to be a good flying instructor.

to his food dish. It was almost as though he was saying “OK, I forgive you”. Olly was back. It was another three weeks before I felt confident enough to take Olly back into the fields. This time my friend from next door, Graham Thewlis, came with me as lookout - to see if other birds were gathering. That flying

lesson was refreshingly uneventful, with Olly now flying almost the width of the field. The following week, on a similar outing, Olly swooped upward and perched himself in a tree. I didn’t have to give his retrieval much thought. He soon flew back onto my outstretched arm, digging in his claws in the process. Over the next few months

One of our neighbours thought not. Someone (I never did find out) had reported us to the police who, in turn, consulted RSPCA. We’d been given three weeks’ notice of their visit, so they can’t have been that worried. But the wait was agonising, and not all the news good. By now, Brian had been caring for Olly for a year and the two had become inseparable. What would the RSPCA inspector have to say, and what was the outcome? The third and concluding part of Brian Firth’s heartwarming story will be in the May edition of Suburban. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 23

SUBURBAN GARDENS

With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

Spring is starting to awaken our plants and shrubs, with new leaves and shoots appearing everywhere. Take care with anything tender, as frosts and snow may still come our way. This is a good time to spring clean beds and borders, keeping on top of weeding and hoeing. Then when everything is ready, finish pruning all your roses – and give them a good dose of rose fertilizer. In a similar fashion, feed your beds and borders with Growmore or fish, blood and bone to give them a good start for the season. Permanently planted pots should have the top two inches of soil removed, and replenished with the correct type of compost and additional long lasting feed. If you have perennial plants which are too large and need dividing, do it as soon as the young shoots show – keeping the outside young pieces and disposing of the old centres. Now the grass is starting to grow, scarify (rake) all the old thatch out of your lawns. This is followed by aeration, which involves inserting a fork into the grass to a depth of 4”, and wiggling slightly to create a drainage path. If the soil is poor, you may sweep fine soil or compost into the 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

holes to improve it. After this, apply a spring fertilizer, using a product with weed and moss killer if these are a problem. Finally over sow any bare patches with grass seed, using one containing rye grass if it receives heavy wear. Start sowing your veg seed is small quantities every two weeks, to avoid a glut. Spring cabbage, broad beans, brussell sprouts. If you do not have space in the garden, use florists

buckets or large pots to enjoy fresh vegetables in season. Established fruit trees should be given a dressing of potash, which will boost their flowering and fruiting potential.

was given a facelift as part of the overall £1.5m refurbishment programme funded by the council, a grant and a very generous donation from the Ziff family, who continue to be great supporters of the venue and city in general. Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council’s executive member for cleaner, safer and stronger communities said: "I am delighted to say that Tropical World is now open to the public once again following a fantastic and wide-ranging improvement programme which was certainly worth the wait. "There really is something for everyone so don’t miss out on your chance to see a variety of new exotic animals and experience fantastic attractions and facilities such as the new aquarium and café conservatory. "The scale of the refurbishment would not have been possible without the continued support and generous funding from the Ziff family and on behalf of the council I would like to offer our deep thanks and gratitude for their help."
