CARS: KEEPING YOURS SAFE! Local police have recently seen an increase in car crime, particularly in car parks around local beauty spots at secluded locations like Soldiers fields (while people are playing sport/fitness classes) and Roundhay park car parks. In most cases people are parking up to go for a walk and foolishly hiding their bags containing valuables in the boot or under the seat. You should never do this, you don’t know who is watching you and it only takes seconds to break in once you have walked away. Although people can be reassured that the culprit has been identified and is now in gaol, you should never leave anything of value in a vehicle. Officers have been out raising awareness around car crime protection and often patrolling PCSO’s see valuable items on display in cars and vans. These include sat navs, lap tops, expensive coats, money, mp3 players

and a number of bags. All easy pickings for a thief! Please follow these simple steps which may prevent you from becoming a victim: •

When you leave your vehicle please make sure there is no sat-nav or cradle left on display. If you have used a cradle with a suction cup wipe the mark off the windscreen (a telltale sign to a thief!). Don’t leave property on show or hide it in obvious places like under the seats or glove box. Take it with you. If you leave any telltale signs there might be something of value

in your vehicle these are the first places thieves will look. Don’t leave coats or bags on display. Thieves may think they have purses or wallets inside and break in to check. Walk around your vehicle and look in can you see anything on display? This takes seconds and could save you hours in arranging repairs or replacements for property.

Get into a routine each time you leave your vehicle and make the checks. Don’t give thieves an easy ride! Insp Richard Coldwell Leeds District

SONG BIRDS SUFFER IN THE SHIVERING SPRING If you were still wearing your scarf and winter coat in late Spring as you ventured outdoors then spare a thought for our nesting song birds struggling to bring up the next generation. If you provide food for your garden birds during the spring then have a gold star. This acts as a fast food restaurant for the adults and keeps them fit and healthy while they raise their brood. What you may not know is that their chicks can only take natural food in the form of insects. The life cycle of insects is closely bound to the weather and low temperatures mean that fewer adult insects emerge. Consequently birds have fewer caterpillars to feed to their chicks. Even if insects have laid eggs, the rate of growth of the caterpillars will be slow. Add wind and rain and valuable insect larvae are washed from the leaves. If the weather is bad during the incubation period then the male will usually feed the female as she sits on the nest, he may even take a

turn at incubating while the female feeds. The problem starts when the eggs hatch and both parents are needed to feed the growing brood. Young chicks are not able to regulate their own body temperature so they need a parent bird to keep them warm and dry in the early stages of growth. If the cold weather persists, only one parent is available to bring food while the other protects the chicks from hypothermia. As the chicks grow, more food is needed at a greater frequency and a single parent isn’t able to sustain that amount of responsibility. Without both parents providing food, chicks

inevitably die from malnutrition. If both parents look for food then chicks perish from the cold. It’s a lose-lose situation. Often the parents abandon the nest so that they can keep themselves healthy but for most species, there is only one nesting attempt each year. Unfortunately this is happening right now in our gardens and woodlands and many nests have already failed. You probably need a tissue now! Life’s hard out there folks. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to

show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

RENE`S REBELS BATTLE CANCER 30th and 31st May saw over 8000 women taking part in events in the beautiful grounds of Temple Newsam to fight cancer in the Race For Life. Fundraisers ran, jogged or walked in 5 and 10 K races to raise funds for cancer research. Rene`s rebels, a group of 56 ladies and children raised more than £3000.00 on the day with the final total still to be confirmed. Rene Fuller organiser of the group and herself a cancer survivor, said after the event: “I can't begin to tell you how I feel, it's immeasurable! Quite overwhelming! That was the best day ever ever ever. Please let's all do it again next year.”

SCANDINAVIAN DELIGHTS If one good thing came out of the recession it was the way we now shop. Gone are the days when we did one big shop, much to the dismay of the large supermarkets. I’ve long been a fan of Lidl and Aldi but having recently seen Netto in the Moor Allerton shopping centre and not wanting to tackle the horrendous one way car park at another local supermarket when I only want milk on my way home from work I decided to give them a try. Parking is a dream you are only a few yards from the entrance, ideal when you just want to pop in and out. The store itself is very basic, but the prices are unbelievably cheap and apart from some red tomatoes which were green on the inside I have found the quality to be great too. They have 5 meat and fish offers which they change weekly so far I have had 2 sirloin steaks for £2.99 2 salmon fillets for £2 and a large joint of smoked ham for £3. The fresh bread is amazing value with a half baton for 19p (39p in the co-op) and small crusty pain for 15p. SUBURBAN RECOMMENDS The jars of green and red pesto sauce in their premier range for only 63p!!! We have the green one with chicken and pasta (netto 10 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

dried penne pasta is 26p!!) and also mixed with a little olive oil as a dressing on mozzarella and tomatoes. Don’t even start me on their mozzarella at less than 50p - it’s not Italian buffalo but for a midweek lunch its absolutely fine. The red one we’ve had with pasta and Prawns but it would also be good with chicken or spread on toast with cheese and grilled for a quick pizza toast. If you’ve not been yet give it try and let us know what you think and any recommendations you have. Prices correct at time of going to print - all opinions are those of Liz Maguire

MOORTOWN FIRE STATION Moortown Fire Station serves the diverse multi-cultural communities of North Leeds, from Harewood to Chapel Town. The station is a wholetime station which provides 24-hour coverage, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There are 24 operational personnel across four shifts, riding one fire engine and a fast response car. The station was built in 1957 and opened on the 14th May; back then it was called Leeds City Fire Brigade Northern Station. The station area is heavily residential and dissected by some major roads, this being the case serious incidents are mostly house fires and road traffic collisions. There are a significant number of elderly residents in Moortown, and there has been a recent spate of house fires involving persons over 65 years of age. Firefighters encourage the people of Moortown to be neighbourly, if you live next door to an elderly person offer to check their smoke alarm, take care of each other and let’s keep safe.

LEEDS SUBURBS – MOORTOWN LS17 Article by Liz Maguire

PROPOSALS FOR A COMMUNITY SPACE AT MOORTOWN CORNER SHOPPING PARADE There are several new developments on-going at Moortown Corner which will help to improve local facilities: the Corner House (former Casino building, originally a cinema) is being converted into apartments on the upper floors with a Morrison's Local planned for part of the ground floor, whilst work on a new Medical Centre, opposite the shops, has just been begun. These projects together with the long-awaited development of the former Yorkshire Bank Sports Ground into housing and a new Moortown Park, create a positive feel to the area. Moortown Community Group, along with local councillors, has long been aware of the difficulties that can be encountered with parking on the two Moortown shopping parades. This is an on-going issue and possible solutions are being investigated. To help enable people enjoy shopping in the area, MCG has suggested developing a seating area between the two parades which will be traffic- free and offer a space in which to sit and relax. With the support of Councillors, MCG has submitted a design to LCC for this area, which will provide seating, planters with flowers and shrubs, and litter bins along with a Community Notice-Board with notices of local events and an Interpretation Board which will show some of the history of Moortown. The area suggested lies between the two parades and extends back into the “no-exit” end of Allerton Grove, beyond the bollards currently in situ.. Meetings have been held to discuss ideas for the type of seating and costings for the project are currently being assessed by the Council. It is very likely that MCG will have to fund-raise for this, applying for grants and holding money-raising events. The working name for the area is “Moortown Square” though it is likely that this will change as developments proceed. Two members of MCG, visiting Year 4 at Moortown Primary School in May, suggested that the pupils may be able to devise names for the area and whilst the decision for this will belong to the Council, it is hoped that these will be considered along with any other ideas. The improvements brought about by the proposed Community Space will give people a more pleasant and relaxed shopping experience and hopefully also be a catalyst for further improvements. CLLR NEIL BUCKLEY I must begin by welcoming a new magazine for Alwoodley. Publications like “Suburban” are priceless in keeping local people informed about what is going on, often within a mile of their homes.

SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association

June is bursting out all over, with green trees shrubs and flowers everywhere. This is the start of the enjoyment season, although still carrying out the routine tasks of weeding and lawn care. If we have a long dry spell, lift your mover blades slightly to keep the grass greener. If you have a favourite rose or shrub, this is the time to take softwood cuttings. Together with short lived perennials, such as wall flowers, pinks – including delphiniums and dahlias. When dahlias, delphiniums and sweet peas are growing well, you may pinch out the growing tips to make the plants bushier – which will result in a greater number of flowers. Trim any spring flowering shrubs and plants when the flowers have gone over, to keep them in the size you have available. Then take a look around in other gardens, 24 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

is there something new you would like to complement your existing arrangements. Runner and French beans, together with peas will appreciate being sown now, and if space is short try climbing French beans for a delicious change. Leeks and brassicas plants sown earlier may be planted out in rows, where sweet corn should be planted in a block pattern to aid pollination. In most areas it is necessary to net your fruit trees and brassicas, to save them from being eaten by our hungry feathered friends. It should be safe now to plant out your tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, although keep an eye open for indications of frost and cover them with horticultural fleece when necessary. Maintain a good supply of salad crops, by sowing small quantities every two weeks. Your outdoor pots and hanging baskets depend entirely on your selves for food and water, so start a routine regular watering, with a light feed every week to keep them flowering all summer.

Alwoodley must be the busiest suburb in Europe for such activities and I don’t think anyone has the full picture of all the groups which flourish around here. If the Council or the government tried to organise these things, everything would take twice as long, cost twice as much, and be done half as well. The big event in Alwoodley in the past month (no, not that one) has been the opening of the extended premises of Maecare. The “e” in Maecare is supposed to stand for “elderly”, but I didn’t see many. There were plenty of young people in their 60s and 70s at the opening, along with some middle-aged people in their 80s. We don’t seem to have many people willing to admit to being elderly. In Spring, Alwoodley is easily confused with Monte Carlo or Nice, and I would like to congratulate all those keen horticulturalists who look after the grass verges in front of their homes. There are some on Alwoodley Lane and elsewhere which are really spectacular. We ought to have a competition. And some of the gardens are magnificent, as has been the blossom. Now I must go prune my mimosa.

LOCAL NEWS

METAL DETECTING By Andy Firth

I was first introduced to the wonderful hobby of metal detecting when my dad bought me my first metal detector in 1977, I was 10 years old.

1

. In 2000 I joined a local metal detecting club and met some great people, and it wasn’t long before my dream was realised and I found my first ‘old coin’ It was a cut qtr of a Henry III voided long cross penny, and it dates to between 1247 to 1279.

I spent many hours searching woodlands in Esholt, Guiseley, and found dozens of modern and pre decimal coins. From that moment on I was totally hooked on metal detecting and would venture out at every opportunity. I detected parks and woodlands for many years, finding plenty of modern coins and odd bits of jewellery but what I really wanted to find was something really old.

2 3

. Coins of this type are called ‘hammereds’ due to the method in which they are struck between 2 coin dies.

. It was common for coins to be cut this way in early medieval coins as there was no small coinage, a full coin is a penny, then cut in half to make 2 halfpenny’s and qtr’s to make farthings.

5

4

. Over the years I have been very lucky finding many hammered coins, highlights include been part of a group of 15 club members on a club site in Knaresborough where we found a scattered hoard of 178 hammered silver penny’s of Henry 1st, I found 19 of them, the coins date to 1100 to 1135. 26 | SUBURBAN MAGAZINE

. My best ever coin came last year, it was very deep and embedded in the clay, my heart jumped in my mouth as I broke open the clod and was greeted by the lovely colour of pure gold, I knew instantly what it was and it is at the top of every detectorists wish list, it is an Iron Age gold ’Stater’ from the Corieltauvi tribe, it dates to between 55 to 45 bc, it had not seen the light of day for over 2000 years and was in as good condition as the day it was struck.

I have found many wonderful coins and artefacts over the years, from Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Medieval, way too many to mention here, my advice to anyone wanting to try this amazing hobby is join a club, or there are many detecting forums which will give lots of good advice, getting permission to detect from farmers can be very difficult, most of my best finds have come from club land and organised detecting rallies which are held all over the country.
