WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE UPDATE
As
There have been lots of sheds and garages broken into across Oakwood, Roundhay & Chapel Allerton areas. Thieves are targeting sheds and garages with poor levels of security, often stealing expensive cycles. All too often we are seeing cycles worth several thousand pounds being stolen from cheap sheds costing a couple of hundred pounds, locked up with a padlock that has been bought for a couple of quid. Fortunately there are a number of steps you can take which are inexpensive and easy to install. First have a look at your shed or garage. What sort of condition is it in? If the door or frame is all rotten or wonky then there’s not much point doing anything other than replacing the door or getting a new shed. Often thieves will simply undo the hinge screws to get into your shed, so the first thing to look at is the door. Are the hinges visible from the outside? Are the screws easy accessible and easy to remove? If this is the case you could consider replacing the screws with ‘coach bolts’ or ‘clutch screws’ to
Th both the door and frame side of the hinges. You could also reinforce the rear of the screws with metal plates to make them even more secure. Have a look at the hasp, is it good enough? Install one which protects the hasp and lock from being tampered with. We recommend the use of Secured by Design products which offer a high level of security. A good quality padlock tested to British Standard BN12320 with a 3 – 4 rating for domestic use should be used. Even better, install a ‘shed bar’. If your shed or garage has windows it’s a good idea to apply something to the glass to stop people seeing what is inside. Laminate sheeting can also give the glass added strength and prevent it from breaking. Garage doors can be protected using a ‘door defender’, several products are available on the market which prevent garage doors being opened.
Even if youe shed is entered you can still protect your cycle inside the shed. There are many products which can be installed to prevent the removal of bikes or gardening equipment. These ground anchor devices are fastened to the shed frame or floor. It’s recommended that a good quality lock and chain is used to fasten the bike to the anchor. A number of companies supply alarms. These vary from basic battery operated PIR alarms to more complicated wireless systems which can be linked to domestic alarm systems. A lot of these products can be obtained from good hardware stores and are easily installed. If you require further assistance simply call 101 and ask to speak to your local Crime Reduction Officer. A BIRD’S NEW CLOTHES After last month’s depressing news about the effect the cold weather was having on our songbirds, this month we can learn about what happens to birds after the breeding season is over. If you take regular walks in the woodlands in and around Leeds you’ll notice that things have become much quieter. The few birds you hear singing will probably be our resident wren, robin, song thrush and blackbird and you may even hear the occasional fluty burst from a migrant blackcap. It is the male bird that sings and he does this initially to attract a female and also to tell other birds of the same species that he is holding a territory. The species that are still singing may have a second attempt at raising chicks but the majority of our woodland birds will only breed once each year. Consequently, there is no further need for those males to sing. At this time, the whole of a bird’s body changes. The sexual organs of both males and females shut down and shrivel up and all of their energy goes
into making new feathers and laying down fat for the coming months. Instead of being out in the open, woodland birds become secretive and are difficult to see. To make things worse for us, but better for them, the tree canopy is dense and dark. They hunt for food in secrecy and only make small calls to each other. Over the coming weeks, an adult bird will replace all of its feathers, most of which will have become worn and damaged through wear and tear; parasite build up and exposure to environmental conditions such as wind and UV light. Very soon they will emerge again looking splendid and pristine.
See if you can see any birds with worn feathers or perhaps you will find feathers on the ground when you take your walk. I’m hopeful that you’ll be able to hear lots of squeaky calls from fledgling birds while you’re out. These often group together to form feeding parties and will stay together throughout the autumn and winter. We’ll talk about them another time. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. For details of classes email linda.startbirding@gmail. com or call 07778 768719. It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to
show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MADE IN HORSFORTH Article by SJ Windridge-France www.sjonlegs.com
As the Horsforth Walk of Art is drawn to a close, we look back on what one woman instigated all in the name of ‘art’ and how the community worked together tirelessly to bring such a successful exhibition of
‘homemade’ talent to fruition. A vast number of impressive and very successful ‘art’ projects were born;
painstakingly sewn together. A teddy bears picnic was held at Broadfields to show off this wonderful communal piece.
‘Knit and Natter’ sessions were held in the run up to the event to create a vibrant and impressive blanket made from individually hand-knitted or crocheted squares that were
Pupils at St Margaret’s C of E Primary School, joined forces with Penny Field School, Meanwood, and professional golfer Joe Heraty to create ‘Golf Art.’ Joe Heraty, a Horsforth resident and pro golfer at Moor Allerton Golf Club, took a break from his PGA EuroPro 2015 Tour schedule to spend time with pupils enjoying this sensory art experience, whilst, together with his two colleagues; Lewis Clarke and Ellie Robinson, teaching the children some basic golfing skills, in a series of short fun sessions. In addition, a group of St Margaret’s pupils, visited Penny Field School to work on a ‘Junk Art’ Project there. Together they used their individual skills and enjoyed the sensory experience of creating a ‘Tree for all Seasons’ as part of the Walk of Art competition run by Courtyard Creativities. These two projects, created a wonderful array of sensory art masterpieces and, in doing so, a friendship was established between the two schools.

In the dead of night, wheelie bins were ‘art bombed’ by the impressive urban street art genii Fish Finger and Alien Pool or were flowerbombed by the equally impressive Splatter Cats. All of which lined the streets in a resplendent street art trail. In other parts of Horsforth bunnies bred like only rabbits could, and were found hidden around town for the ‘If You Find a Rabbit Grab It’ Project to be discovered by excitable youngsters and rabbit-loving adults alike. Each individual rabbit was made from a hand-knitted square and has a unique look and name. Families were encouraged
to seek out a rabbit to rehome during the Walk of Art weekend and then post their finds on the similarly named Facebook page. Striking signage and handmade bunting was strung along perimeter fencing and garden walls drawing people to the event where they could discover the impressive arts. Crowds gathered at Hall Park Cricket Club to enjoy refreshments, the dulcet tones of local choirs, to learn crafting skills, and to yarn bomb seats, trees and barriers, and walked around the streets indulging in pop up artists studios all over town.
Such a vast number of talented local people came to the fore, to share their different creative mediums. Arty efforts from local schools and residents alike were applauded and fun was had by all. Who knew a town could house so much imagination and artistic flare. Horsforth Walk of Art, the brainchild of Horsfordian Lara Rule, transpired and succeeded in celebrating the creative sides of Horsforth, and all the innovative artists, young and old, therein. I have a feeling this will not be the last venture of this kind. Please visit http://horsforthwoa.org/ for more information. SUBURBAN MAGAZINE | 11

ALWOODLEY REVIEW Happy New Year Some new years start on January 1, the tax year starts on April 6 but the political year starts the day after the elections. You will no doubt have observed the powerful impact of councillors returning to work at the Civic Hall. Well, all right then, perhaps not. It’s already clear that this municipal year is going to be different. Central government says that it intends to delegate more money and responsibility to the ‘regions’ than it has for generations and we had better be ready. There is no denying that Manchester and the towns round it are ahead of Leeds at present and we don’t like that. It looks as though local politicians of all parties are going to have to work together across town
and city boundaries and even accept a new method of governing, with powerful City Region mayors elected by you. There is a long way to go yet but it is looking like a big change and we cannot let the self-importance of politicians get in the way of the prosperity of ordinary people (Not that there are any politicians in Leeds like that, of course). Most people I talk to agree that we are ruled too often from London. Yorkshire is bigger in every sense than half a dozen European countries and we should be able to make our own decisions more than we have in the past. Sorry to be serious. I promise to write about wheelie bin collections and muddy grass verges next time. Cllr Neil Buckley Alwoodley Ward

ROUNDHAY - LEEDS SUBURB Article by Liz Maguire
The name Roundhay is derived from an old French name meaning round hunting enclosure. It was a hamlet until 1803, when the park was bought by the Nicholson family who went on to build the Mansion house - now a lovely cafe and wedding venue. In 1872 the city of Leeds bought the estate and it was opened as a public park for the people of Leeds.
Summer by the Lake at Roundhay Park
During the First World War Roundhay was used as a meeting place for soldiers hence the area of park on Princes Avenue being known as Soldiers Field. More recently Roundhay Park benefited from a lottery heritage grant and hosts many events including music festivals, fun fairs, charity events and the annual bonfire and fireworks display. The park is used for many group activities including military fitness, tennis, running, rowing, cycling and cricket. Those in the know when it comes to property say if an area has either a Pizza Express or a Starbucks you can’t go far wrong and as Roundhay has both I think you’re on to a winner and can count yourself extremely

Roundhay has 4 state primary schools - Talbot Primary, Gledhow Primary, St John Primary and Kerr Mackie, with secondary education provided by Roundhay School which has around 1500 pupils and received an outstanding Ofsted report in 2013 with inspectors stating:

LOCAL NEWS FRIENDS OF ROUNDHAY PARK: JUNE 2015 When you visit Roundhay Park, one of the most popular visitor attractions in our City, it is hard to imagine that 20 years ago it was in a sad state of neglect and disrepair. It was at that point, in 1994 that a number of concerned local residents formed Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP) with the aim of restoring the Park to its former glory. FoRP now has over 800 members and continues to work with Park Management and Leeds City Council to keep the park looking wonderful and to introduce further improvements – such as the children's playground next to tramways car park, the wildfowl interpretation board next to Waterloo Lake and the refurbished tennis courts. The Friends Garden, situated behind Canal Gardens next to Old Park Road, is a very well visited area which was designed, constructed and financed by FoRP 10 years ago and is maintained by them on a regular basis. If you have visited Friends Garden recently you may have noticed that, as a result of a leak in the main canal in Canal Gardens, the stepping stones now cross an area of messy mud rather than water! Efforts are being made by Park Management to establish how the leak can be stopped but in the meantime,

Litter Pickers! M
FoRP are considering laying river cobbles, interspersed by suitable planting to make crossing the stepping stones a nice experience again. 3 years ago FoRP started regular litter picks and now have a group of over 40 members involved in this, going out in a force of up to 20 people per session from April to September and especially following sunny weekends or Events. As well as the group sessions, many people have adopted their own areas, which are cleared on a regular basis. Bob Reid, coordinator of the litter picking group said; “The fact that people see us litter picking makes them think twice about dropping it and we feel we have made a real difference. People often come up to us to say thank you for the work we're doing. The litter pick are also
a good opportunity to chat to like minded people.” Y

Last year FoRP introduced a general gardening group to take some pressure off the Park Gardeners by doing weeding and tidying to the formal gardens in the Park, in areas agreed with Park Management. Most of the work last year was done in the Garden between The Tram Terminus Car Park and the Roundhay Fox and the formal beds in Canal Gardens. FoRP also have a main working party group which carries out Projects and clearance works which are a step-up from weeding and maintenance work. Tasks done this year include: MY

looking good – dead head all the flowers as they fade – then apply a summer feed of fish, blood and bone, alternatively, growmore.
This is the start of the holiday season, so if you are going away - spruce up your front garden, and ask a friendly neighbour to watch over and water your hanging baskets and tubs.
Continue to take soft wood cuttings of pinks, carnations, geraniums, shrubs and roses, inserting them into good compost and keeping them moist and shaded until they have rooted. This is good fun to try, even if you are only partially successful.
Then some of the crops you sowed earlier will be ready for harvesting, so you will be able to enjoy the fresh picked taste and smile. If you have the space, final sowings can be made of peas, french beans and beetroot. Autumn and winter brassicas plants should be planted now, broccoli, cabbage, sprouts etc. Keep sowing salad items every two weeks. Indoor and outdoor tomatoes, together with cucumbers, melons and peppers should be fed on a weekly basis, and all crops should be watered regularly in dry spells to stop them bolting and running to seed. Your roses and flowering shrubs will be looking brilliant at the moment, so to keep them
Herbs are bursting with flavour this month, and are ideal for cutting and drying. Rinse them in cold water, shake off, and hang them in bunches in a warm airy space out of direct sunlight. When dry, strip of the leaves and store them in glass jars in your cupboards in the dark. Soft fruit is beginning to swell and be ready for picking, so delight in the many varieties available – eating them however you enjoy them – then freezing, jam making or baking to extend the season. Flower, vegetable and craft shows are popping up all over, so look out for them and be inspired – either as an interested person or even as a novice exhibitor.
