ALWOODLEY REVIEW One day last week the three of us received an e-mail from Planning Department. It said that all the debates and discussions about the new Medical Centre on King Lane had now been concluded and there is no reason, as far as the planners are concerned, that the project could not go ahead. As this project started about the same time as the planning for the London Olympics you can imagine our reaction. In a month or two, work will begin on building the most modern medical centre in Leeds, just where we need it in Alwoodley. A project that has just finished is the new ‘assisted living centre’ of 60 flats on Shadwell Lane, which has been completed in half the time. Residents are beginning to move in. Dan, Peter and I are going to use the extra residential accommodation as an argument for
a new pedestrian crossing on Shadwell Lane, near the new building and where, it seems to us, speeding is a particular problem. It has been pointed out to us that there are too many crossings on King Lane (near Tesco) but apparently we can’t have one moved to where we think it would be more useful. (The Shadwell Lane building is called ‘Thackrah Court’, which was not our idea and which has little connection with the area.)

As politicians we would like to take the credit for the wonderful display of wild flowers along King Lane, but the only one we organised is the one opposite the Sainsbury’s centre. The main work was organised by Alwoodley Parish Council, and I would like to thank them for a glorious display. Cllr Neil Buckley Alwoodley Ward

DEBUT NOVEL FROM MENSTON AUTHOR My name is Robert Young and I have lived in Menston for the past twenty years. Seven years ago I decided out of the blue to write a novel, there's one in all of us right? Well a year later and the very rough manuscript was finished, of sorts. I decided to get the book pro-edited before I approached an agency or publishers, and to be honest it was money well spent. I learned a lot from the editor and it gave me the confidence to post it off to a number of London agents, twenty five in total. One by one the rejection letters came back, knocking my ego and making me wonder if the book was as good as I thought it was. Unperturbed I decided to carry on writing and wrote book two, a follow on from the first novel and what now formed part of a seven book series, or at least that was the plan. Two years later, research trips to Rome, New York and Luxor Egypt (my wife didn't mind this part of the process) and I'd completed books three and four.
two years to publish your book. Could be on day one, could be on day seven hundred and thirty. What happened knocked me for six... Two weeks before the book was due to be published, about a year later, the publishers went bust and I was sent back the intellectual rights to my story... Square one it would seem.
Late one night on line, there's plenty of those in the life of an author, I came across an independent publisher from Salisbury who it seemed would be a perfect fit for my novels... Sorry I should have mentioned, the books were and are aimed at the young adult market, I guess you'd call them historical fantasy, hence the Roman and Egyptian trips.
I'll admit it, I sulked for six months, licking my wounds and played the victim.
Long story short, I signed a two-year deal with the publishers and felt pretty smug. Now all that sounds great, but what it means in reality is the publisher has
I wrote a couple of short stories in the meantime and both of them were published in anthologies, confidence restored somewhat. I was then approached on social media (Facebook) by a publisher in Glasgow who where keen to put out 'Angel's Recruit' the first in the series. I'd put my website www.auctoratus up on the site and they'd taken a shine to it. OK, another long story short...
I signed the paperwork and sure enough at the beginning of March this year the book was released on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle, I was delighted. The feeling of euphoria however didn't last long.... A week after publication and they too went into liquidation. Right now I was feeling like I was Mr Jinx and the book was some kind of evil script which wasn't meant to reach the masses. What do you know an hour after I'd received the 'We're very sorry...' Email, yet another publisher approached me and offered to put 'Angel's Recruit' in to print... I was naturally sceptical. Well, I'm pleased to say this story does gave a happy ending. The book went straight to number one in the young adult charts on Amazon and guess what? Yes the publishers are still solvent! They want to publish the entire series and I've recently agreed (crossing my fingers).

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing panes - not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any time of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Shadwell, Moortown, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Meanwood and Oakwood areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the

personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show
how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

HAVE I SEEN A RARITY? Summer is the most confusing time of year for new birdwatchers and it’s the time when I get the most calls, emails and photos about ‘mystery’ birds. Many people are convinced that they’ve seen something rare as they are not able to find an image of the bird they’ve seen in their fieldguide (their bird book). Has this happened to you? Here’s why.
you’ll struggle to identify it.
When people start to become interested in birds they (understandably) choose a fieldguide that shows them some pretty pictures. These are usually photographs. To ensure that the book is small enough to fit in your pocket, the photo has to be a decent size to provide any detail. The most colourful bird is usually the male so you get one large photo of a male and not much of anything else. Even if you have smaller photos or drawings of alternative plumages, they are very small so your eye is drawn to the large photo.
So why does this time of year produce additional problems? Firstly, after bringing up their brood of chicks, both male and female birds look pale, worn and tatty. If we take the blue tit as an example, one pair totalled 600 sorties per day when feeding a large brood of chicks. As they move in and out of the hole, the outer edges of their feathers become so worn that it affects the colour and shape of the adult birds. I have quite a few calls from people who are so certain that they’ve seen a crested tit in their local woodland because of this very situation. Does your fieldguide tell you where these birds can be found?
With some species of birds, both male and female are alike but with many birds, the male and female are different. This is called sexual dimorphism. So, if your fieldguide fits the description above and you’ve seen a female bird, then chances are
Secondly, think of all those fledged youngsters that are now fending for themselves. What do they look like? Blue tit babies are yellow where the adult’s white patches usually are. Many other young birds will look more like the female than the male but some
look completely different. It’s these birds, more than anything else, that create the most excitement amongst novice birdwatchers. Even experienced birders have to work harder to correctly identify some families of birds such as waders, gulls and birds of prey. So, today’s lesson is, when out birdwatching over the next few weeks, think about tatty adults and young fledglings. Remember that you’re more likely to see something common than something rare and make sure you read the text that accompanies each illustration in your fieldguide. I’ll happily recommend a fieldguide to you if you need any help in choosing one. Linda Jenkinson teaches people about birds in and around Leeds. WEST YORKSHIRE POLICE UPDATE Operation Deskgill strikes again at the heart of criminals in Alwoodley, Shadwell and Moortown. Deskgill is simply the code name for the high octane, intelligence led policing operation to deny criminals the use of roads in the area. On Friday 17th July 2015, local neighbourhood Police Officers and Community Support Officers have teamed up with colleagues from the Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support Team, including Special Constables, to form one dynamic task force heading up a proactive and visible policing operation aimed directly at tackling criminals and perpetrators of anti-social behaviour. The officers worked tirelessly from the afternoon into the early hours with numerous vehicles stopped and the vehicles and occupants checked over. No stone was left unturned resulting in some minor traffic

offences being dealt with by tickets at the roadside. In addition to this, the officers’ positive work saw two vehicles and their occupants being searched for illegal drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The location of these vehicles [that cannot be disclosed] is known to officers as a local drugs hotspot. However, on these occasions, no drugs were found…... We’ll catch them next time. Officers also arrested a female for assault who has since been interviewed and has been given a Police Caution for that offence. The officers’ hard work paid off, with exception of the female arrested for assault, no crimes were committed in the area whilst Operation Deskgill was in force. Operation Deskgill is a rolling operation and will be taking place soon to return to strike again on a street near you in Alwoodley, Shadwell and Moortown. SPOTLIGHT: MEANWOOD Article by Meanwood Valley Partnership
Meanwood is a thriving urban village with a rich heritage. Nestled in the valley between Headingley and Chapel Allerton, it combines the benefits of being close to the City Centre, with the feel of a country location. The open green spaces in Meanwood Park and surrounding woods breathe life into the suburb which has seen an upsurge of popularity in the past few years.

caravans, it has grown into a 24 acre site. It’s not only a working farm with a wide variety of animals, but also a major centre for community and environmental work.
The Meanwood Valley Trail runs through the park on its 7 mile path from Woodhouse Moor through to Golden Acre Park, where it meets the Leeds Country Way, the official link to the Dales Way. The park also hosts a memorial commemorating Captain Lawrence Oates (of Scott of the Antarctica fame). Lawrence’s parents both came from Meanwood and Lawrence spent time here. March 2012 marked the centenary of his death, which established him as an inspirational model of courage, self-sacrifice and understated heroism. His final words, ‘I am just going outside and I may be some time’ remain etched in the world’s memory 100 years on. Particularly poignant too almost 100 years on is the War Memorial on Green

Road. As well as serving as the memorial for those who sacrificed their lives in 2 World Wars, it’s also the designated Somme Memorial for the region. That battle which started on July 1st 1916 saw more than 1,000,000 men wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. The Meanwood Valley Urban Farm was established in 1980 as a registered charity to provide services to inner city communities. From the Farm’s humble beginnings operating from two old
Meanwood is a modern, vibrant, energetic community that has a fantastic range of activities on offer. The Meanwood Festival in May organised by the Meanwood Valley Partnership showcases some of them with 60 events encompassing music, art, dance, film, sport, health, heritage, drama, food and drink in 15 locations over a 10 days period. This year’s Festival culminated in the Annual Family Fun Day, opened by Kay Mellor OBE, with 3000 people enjoying a great day’s entertainment. With such a fantastic range of amenities and facilities, it’s a brilliant place to live and bring up families. No wonder it’s such a popular area.

Sunday starts at 10:30 with Festival Hymns in the Street, run by Churches Together, then at 12:30 the famous Chapel Allerton Festival Jazz Sunday kicks in with the “Garforth Jazz Rock Band” (from Garforth Academy), hip Leeds band “Stretch Trio”, local jazz legends vocalist Nickki Allan and saxman Rod Mason, the popular “James O’Hara Blues Band”, a first appearance from the entertaining “Louis Louis Louis”, then a chance to strut your stuff to charanga band “Tarantismo” through to the early evening. Don’t forget the Festival runs entirely on volunteers so we need you! SUBURBAN GARDENS With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, the garden is full of flowers and the fruit is ready for picking. Vegetables and salads are tasting delicious, tomatoes, cucumbers and melons are growing full of promise. So back to the more mundane tasks, deadheading your roses and flowering shrubs. Then cutting back large perennials which have finished flowering, and the happy exercise of weeding. This is a good time to spread a general fertiliser around the garden, to give all your plants a boost after the hard work of producing flowers. This is especially important for Camellias and Rhododendrons, as they will be making their buds for next spring –also keep them well watered in dry spells. Look out for autumn flowering bulbs, especially colchicum, which sends flowers up before the leaves. If you grow prepared hyacinths for Christmas, this is the month to start them off in the dark. At the end of this month trim all your hedges and topiary specimens, then do the same with your gooseberry and current bushes. Summer raspberries are pruned after the last fruit is gathered, cutting out only the stems which have fruited Strawberry runners should be cut from the parent plant, and planted separately to provide new plants for next year. Keep a sharp eye open for tomato and potato blight, pick off any damaged leaves, then spray the compete plant
with an approved fungicide. This also applies to green, white and black fly, which may appear very quickly – using you finger and thumb for individual clusters, otherwise your organic or chemical spray to control them. If you wish to grow bi annual plants, such as wall flowers, start them off in a seed tray ready for planting out when they have grown to a reasonable size. And finally, if you wish to improve your bare patches of soil where crops have already been harvested, consider a green manure. There are many to choose from, which grow over the winter and are dug in before they flower in the spring.
